The cars look like they're made for an action video game that wants an "F1" car but has no license and need it a bit extreme and they sound like nascar. This has potential
Imagine seeing them along with Rubens Barichello on the grid at Albert Park next year. It would be awesome to see. I was thinking as I was watching the livestream that Mark Webber should give it a go. Gil de Ferran was working with McLaren for their Indy project, so maybe for Fernando Alonso? They gotta make this happen! It would be epic.
While I agree with you, that Australian fascination with lumpy V8s has been the major reason we have made little progress in motorsport here over the last 40 years. This formula addresses that problem. The trouble is that V8 Stupidcars are so entrenched here that most Australians know no other type of racing or if they do, they only see it refracted through V8 Stupidcars references.
F1 V8 sound much better. These low tec V8 engines do not rev over 8000 rpm. F1 V8 18000rpm max. I understand the intention of using these engines. They are made to last a whole season. This makes S5000 very boring.
Siegbert schnösel Have you ever been to an S5000 race? I can promise you they are not boring. I was at Sandown and the sight of Macrow, Martin and Golding going up the back straight at 250-260, covered by a pocket handkerchief was one of the best things I’ve seen in racing in decades. If all you’re interested in is technical things then you’re welcome to the processional events like Formula 1 but if you like racing and want to know who the best driver is then S5000 does a better job. The engines were not just chosen for their reliability. They cost about $30,000 complete. How much does an F1 engine cost? A million maybe? Even a V8 Stupidcar engine costs $160,000. Anyone starting a new category of open wheelers in Australia either has rocks in their head or they have been very careful with identifying running costs and target public. It’s still a gamble but clearly one a hard-nosed businessman like Garry Rogers was prepared to put his money behind. I don’t know how anyone could call this boring.
I'm already behind it. I just hope they get more high profile events than Shannons Nationals. They're gonna be at the Grand Prix next year which is great, but they should at least be a support category at Supercars events so they're live on TV. Scrap the SuperUtes and bring in these.
Lachyy Fair enough. But if you are interested in motorsports - and particularly racing - I encourage you to get yourself to an S5000 event as soon as you can.

I hope Alex Davison is okay. That crash was frightening. What a fun new racing series! I love that Rubens is back in open wheelers again. It is fun to watch. Thank you for uploading. Where can I watch the full race or the live coverage? (Europe/Germany)
Davison's okay, he said in an interview that it didn't even hurt. The races are all broadcast on the Shannon's Nationals website for free as well as on Motorsport.tv.
"How good are these cars over a distance?!" Huh? On a more serious note, caution is advised when talking about safety. By its nature motor racing is a dangerous sport. While it's the job of administrative bodies, racing teams, manufacturers and drivers to make the sport safe while retaining the excitement factor, you shouldn't say it's 'ultra safe'. Because it isn't ultra safe.
Create interstitial transitions for your edits. It's too choppy and amateurish otherwise. If you want S5000 to appear as a legitimate top tier open wheel class, smooth and slick packaging is important.
I wouldn’t rate Sandown as particularly suited for single-seaters, but they put on a good show. If these cars can perform as well on more a flowing type of circuit, I’d be very impressed.
I don't want to belittle this series at all, quite the opposite, but just to make it easier to understand, would you call the s5000s more economical, NA, Australian F2 cars?
What I saw was excellent except for Alex Davidson. Why though are they so heavy? 900kilo, My Sports sedan was only 20 kilos heavier. XU1 Chev. They seem to have brake balance issues though, the number of locked brakes, Rubens especially. The new part over the top down to Dandenong Rd though lets people deliberatly short cut. That is great piece of road being spoilt more and more every year
They can adjust the brake bias. As for the weight, I don’t know. I had a look at a weight distribution chart in the pits and it would be more like 900 including driver and fuel. Empty weight would be about 820. Still not light for a single seater. An old F5000 Lola T332 weighs about 665 kg. The new chassis should be lighter. The engine is all alloy, compared to cast iron... I can’t see where the extra 150 kilos comes from.
Thanks. This is great. Is S5000 like Formula 5000, using big old V8s? I've loved this type of car since I was a kid going to SCCA races in the US. They called this class Formula A, I think.
