- It's back! The World's Greatest Drag Race returns with nine of the world's best supercars, sports cars, and muscle cars for 2012 facing off in an epic quarter-mile sprint for glory... and ultimate bragging rights! This year's field includes all nine contenders from Motor Trend's 2012 Best Driver's Car competition. We have the Lamborghini Aventador, Nissan GT-R Black Edition, Ford Shelby GT500, McLaren MP4-12C, Jaguar XKR-S, Porsche 911 Carrera S, Subaru BRZ, Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series and Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 -- all gathered together on an abandoned airstrip at El Toro Marine Base to find out which car is the fastest. Obviously these nine competitors display a wide range of power and performance, not to mention price tags. So why are we lining them all up again for one gigantic, over-the-top drag race? Mihai Petre it’s easier to launch a less powerful car. Why do you think so many people do burnouts in the Hellcats when they try to launch them?! It’s hard to launch high horsepower cars without AWD unless they come with a really good launch control like Porsches and McLarens.

The Shelby GT500 was 4th place VERY VERY impressive for being an American car and competing against some of the worlds best super cars. Gotta love the Shelby.

Any better model of the camaro or a dodge would have probably been right up with the Shelby GT500 or past it. Personally I prefer a Cuda or a Roadrunner (Sadly not made anymore) over The typical Mustang/Camaro/Challenger/Charger but the Gt500 did really well for being as heavy as they are compared to the imports.

***** well, when I'm spending that kind of money on a super car, I'd expect atleast a nice handmade interior like a Lamborghini or ferrari. The body is also cheap, I had the pleasure to push the back panel inwards because it's all just plastic. The back actually bent with minimal force, it was pretty hysterical, yet pathetic at the same time. When you're spending that 100k, you're only paying for the engine and power, not the luxury interior and body.

I'm a huge GTR fan, but you're really shortchanging Porsche with these drag races. You need at least a 911 Turbo to compete.
We all know a 991 Turbo or Turbo S 911 would stomp any of these cars, Aventador included, and you can put your kids in the backseat.

Nissan needs to step it up and leave the R35 GTR die in peace, we need a hybrid R36 with more power and less weight.
At least the R35 is still cheaper with $20,000 worth of mods to beat a 992 turbo S, however people still bring up that "stock for stock" argument, it's kinda annoying.

SHNIKIES Not exactly,I think the Tesla model S is more technologically advanced and so is the McLaren P1, Laferrari etc and besides once the new NSX launches it'll be more advanced then the GTR for around the same price
yea.. you do know that the GT-R learns the surface, of a track, right? ANY surface. oh, and if u do want to drift it (which it can be done), the car will read the angle of the steering wheel, and throttle application, and if it determines that you are WANTING the car to drift, then it will arrange the power to the wheels according to the held angle, to keep the car drifting for as long as it can, given the current power. the GT-R has a lot of little hidden things that most people don't know about.
on the other hand, i've been following this car since it was being developed.. :)

BRZ/GT86/FRS is $30K max and was only 4 seconds behind? That's a winner in my book. Compared to all those other smug rich boy cars I'll be damned if I have to spend $100K+ to have some fun, opposed to less than half of that for the Toyobaru.

Rule of thumb is that 1/10 of a second is a car length in drag racing. So the BRZ being "only" four seconds behind -- that's 40 car lengths.

Even though the the new z28 is a track monster and also the new stingray and I even have to give props to the new Mustang as it's suspension is impressive and that is for a quarter of the price if a lambo or any other exotic. Americans can build cars my 1971 camaro with minor suspension mods hangs with cars like the 911, z06 and I can even hold my own with a gtr and I'm running leaf springs and custom made adjustable arms it's all in the driver

The venom is a super car. It dominates the super car scene. Look at the specs for the 2014 corvette. It makes less power yet still beats the more expensive f type.

Let's all remember that the Subaru BRZ has a naturally aspirated 4 cylinder boxer engine. For it to run in the 14 second bracket is pretty damn good, that would make a great everyday sports car with a little bit of power behind it. Very good value for money I say.

Mustang and Camaro V6 models (which cost $3k and $2k less, respectively) run in the mid 14's, have better brakes, handling, and track numbers, and you get an engine that has a little grunt to it.
By the time you put any options on your BRZ (because Subaru makes their money on options), you're looking at the same price as V8 Mustangs and Camaros.
So, no. BRZ is terrible value for money when you could just get the WRX or any of the V6 ponycars and have significantly better performance.
I guess the BRZ was really just there to show that you don't need 500+ horse power to still have lots of fun. Considering it only has 200 HP and 151 pounds of torque, it kept up well with cars that have 3 or 4 times the power.
