- With the new YZ450FX, Yamaha have accidentally but inadvertently created a swiss army knife, jack of all trades, do anything dirt bike… and I want one! Here’s why.
In little old New Zealand, it’s extremely difficult to procure bikes for these reviews, I’m always hounding manufacturers to let me film with their latest bikes, but it’s to little avail. Hey guys! I hope you enjoyed this one, some of my best work so far for sure, I’m quite proud of it actually. Was a really difficult edit because we got screwed by the rain on the enduro part, there was supposed to be a lot more information there and that’s where it was originally going to end, but I had next to no footage because we had to pack up and leave it got that bad! So I was forced to get creative in order to close the thing out nicely. The main bit of information that’s missing is I was going to talk about the bike’s weight, it’s on the heavy side (116kgs) and I had this joke planned where I’d compare it to a chubby girl on Instagram and claim that it has ‘an amazing ability to hide its weight’ then I’d say ‘whereas those cheeky maidens do it though cunning angles, this thing does it with brilliant suspension’ then I’d go on to explain in further detail why the suspension is so good, finishing with the punchline ‘It’s not until you actually go to pick her up that you notice *shot of me struggling to pick the bike up plays* 😂 I was gutted to have to cut that joke and as a result, finishing out the edit took ages, but I got there in the end it’s still a solid way to close. Anyway, on to the $1,000 Dirt Bike Challenge now!!! Don’t miss it, it’s going to be amazing!

It can even be a great high-performance dual sport bike. I added blinkers, horn, lights, adjusted the fuel mapping, and it gets over 55 mpg. Because of the low first gear and torquey engine, I geared it 14:48, and it will cruise nicely at 50 mph and still go anywhere offroad. In less than an hour, I can convert it back to a race bike. Yamaha should consider making a dual sport version of this bike like Honda did with the 450L.

When you are starting a warm engine on a bike that has fuel injection, sometimes you have to open the throttle all the way while pressing the start button to clear the engine of a rich fuel mixture.
Fml I still haven’t gotten a fuel injection bike and ur telling me I have to do that damn trick with fuel injection too lol

Great video. So.. apparently there if you look on the stock throttle grip, you'll see some lines, maybe 1/8th inch from a mark on the clamp housing, move those to match that mark and try the starter.. and BOOM it will fire. Saw that on an Aussie video of the 250FX. Works on my WR too.. Its like a hot start

My thanks to you Ash for the terrific review and Jason for the use of your bike! I had to re-train myself to drive this monster once I purchased one but now that I'm used to it, I'm easily catching up to and passing the younger blokes on their bikes and racing quads especially on tight, twisty, muddy tracks where this bike shines.. As far as I can tell so far, it also smokes pretty much everything else on the straights..

I thought my bike was a POS because of the starting problem, glad to see that I’m not the only one with that issue. Found that changing the map helps that starting issue. Great video. The only real video that hits every spot for a review.
Buy an aftermarket battery such as the anti gravity. Problem solved.

It also makes the sickest supermoto with its 5 speed wide ratio gear box. I've had a 2019 YZ450FX supermoto since 2018 and absolutely love it, I love it so much I sold all of my sport bikes. As far as the electric starting issue, it likes being started in neutral. Btw, I've never done a single valve check ever and it rides better than it did new after 4 years of ripping it on the street. All I ever do is oil changes and clean/lube the chain. I have yet to even have to adjust the chain.

Be better with 6 speed for road riding for the highway. I have a ktm 525 exc for supermoto, 450 exc for enduro and a gsxr 1000 so a bike for everything lol

I have a 2020 yz450fx, and I love it, I do hare scrambles and enduro races and turn around and Race tracks the next day and the bike never bats an eye, it’s the most well rounded bike I’ve ever seen
Magin they put a headlight and street n trail title and the bike came with a rear lighting kit that just had to be installed

You are 100% on the starting issues, very frustrating, particularly on dead-engine starts. Beyond that, the FX is a super beast for wide open racing, the suspension in magical and has saved me multiple times. I highly recommend the YZ450FX.
It only does that when you start it in gear. Starts lighting fast every time in neutral. I've had my street-legal 2019 YZ450FX Supermoto since 2018.

Awesome video. I went shopping for a new bike and wanted to get a YZ250X but they were all out and they only had a YZ450FX. After I watched this video I'm leaning towards the four stroke. I'm 55 and I've always had a two stroke but I think you changed my mind.
I had the 2016. Put a Ride Engineering linkage on it to bring the rear down a bit. Super reliable....put over 100 hours on mine with zero issues. I now have a 2020 YZ250fx. Yamaha's SSS suspension is the best production suspension available.
These are the kind of reviews people need to see when getting ready for a new machine ❤ Yamaha's lineup is extremely capable and impressive this year. Very happy with my 2020 purchase.
I remember when my old XR 600 with Al Baker suspension was the best do it all bike in the day, Man look how far technology has advanced this would be considered a works bike back then....
I have a 2016 YZ450FX. It starts perfectly every time. Yamahas are very sensitive to idle speed adjustment. I'd also check the fuel pump pressure. I'd mount a gauge and watch it every time it doesn't start.
BTW, that plastic skid plate is marginal at best. It needs to be replaced with an aluminum one.
I removed the sidestand from my bike. I don't need it for woods riding.
I love my 450FX in the woods. People look at me like I'm crazy, but it works great.

Yamahas seemed to still be plagued with hot starting issues 🤦♂️...I’m sure you can play with the map to lean out the bike for any hot start situation 🤷🏼♂️ my bike still has a carb and hot start lever with 0 issues, after I’ve seen so many problems with newer bikes electronics I think I’m keeping my old dinosaur 02 426...boy I would sure love the suspension and brakes of the new bikes though 🤔
Review on point. About strokes, rpm on 1st gear compared to others, handling in other disciplines. Its a good review and good mavhine overall

I have the 2021 yz250x 2 stroke and I could honestly say the same about it although being a 2 stroke u require much more clutch control in technical single track and enduro . But overall bike performs really well in all types of riding .

I have the 2020 YZ450FX, regarding the starting issue that is very common & fixable, take it to your Yamaha Shop to get them to check it over, our shop here changed one thing & it has never failed to start since then.
All bikes will start in neutral easier than in gear because they’re not dealing with any clutch drag, even a Gold Wing. Love my 99 WR 400 and my 03 YZ 450, they never let me down on the trails here in North Eastern Ontario Canada. Great review!

had to watch this for the 10th time as i'm editing my review of the 2023 model haha. Don't know how to top this one! You nailed it so good. Forgive me when I bring up a lot of your same points in my video lol.
Lol. Yeah I had a ride on a demo '23... Worse all rounder imo but even more competitive in what it's designed for, they've got this chassis turning so tight it's unbelievable! Suspension felt like a rock though and I found the even more powerful engine to be a bit much, at least for the terrain I was riding it in. The whole deal had me being really tentative. Hell, if I didn't look at the shroud I probably would've guessed I was just riding the motocross model. Definitely can't recommend as a good enduro/trail bike anymore :(
I miss my 2006 YZF450, what a great bike it was and this one looks drastically improved.

What a great vid, thank you for the outstanding review! One thing to add... All KTM and Husqvarna XC/FX models come equipped with pushbutton TC mapping (Traction Control). It's a little useful for weekend rides with the homies, but during a race it's not very useful and tends to detract my focus a bit.
Great video Ash! I just wanted to let you know this video led me to but the 450FX over a year ago. Not much for content or reviews on this bike. Glad I got it. I needed an in between as I ride everything. Sure, 2 bikes is best but this one is good enough to do it all. Thanks man!

I love that Yamaha and Honda are making Moto-trail bikes, but after years of racing 450's I'm at a point where I'm not in "race shape" any longer and the power of a 450 makes me lazy and tired on big rides. I've switched to a 300 2-stroke and I wish I had made this decision many years earlier, I feel like I'm 10 years old again on the 2-stroke...it's absolutely brilliant! I would love to take the 450FX out into dunes and desert though...

Great vid Ash. Have a 450fx for about 18mths. Yams are such value, performance and reliability are on point. Adding a 125x to have the opposite end of the spectrum. Like the simplicity of a 2 stroke and may end up with a 250x one day. Keep it up Yamaha.

I have this bike, 2019 yz450fx. Only use it for single track and the biggest problem is restarting when the engine is hot. From what I hear, it's a common problem. Hopefully Yamaha releases a fix for this. 🤞

My Yamaha 450 always overheated and the tight trails does this bike overheat in the tight trails I see a lot of for strokes overheating but not the two strokes
The newer 2 strokes with fuel injection are overheating as well. I own the 19 450fx and when you ride first gear for lomg periods of time it does get hot and you can hear the coolant gurgling. But yamaha sells a bolt on fan for this bike just like the wr models have for like 70 bucks and it solves the issue entirely.
I have a 16 and I love the absolute shit out of it. I actually don’t have the starting problem, mine seems to start absolutely wonderfully. 10/10 bike, love it more the more I ride it
I got a 2002 yz426f if ya want try it. Runs good has the compression and everything enlarged tank nothing crazy but she's fun to ride!

I love the video man, I had a 2012 yz450f with a rekluse clutch and many other things for trail, all it needed was e start and fans for the radiators because it would sometimes over heat in first in the woods big 250lb motor cross bike but I had to sell it due to hard time but man I regret it to this day and want one soooooo bad and when I’m able to buy one again this one will b it. Thanks again
Ridden super sport bikes all my life but it is evident this is a magnificent machine. Japanese manufacturers have let KTM too much ground, but Japan quality is unparalleled. Need to make it a euro 5 spec.

bruh.....i'm a street rider (primarily my z900....love that thing) and want to break into the whole off-road scene ever since moving to a more "country" state. your riding skills are amaze balls and i'm super jelly. this might just be the bike i get. i want to get my son into it as well so i might get me this bike and him the tt-r110 (hes 10 )
This bike is too much for most people offroad especially if your new to it. Get a 250, dipping toes into dirt on a 450 is like learning street on a gxxr 1000. Highly recommend ktm 2strokes for pretty much everything but MX.

LOL. The electric starter works best in NEUTRAL. The first clip you showed it starting right up, you DID NOT have the clutch pulled in, in neutral? The second clip of it not starting you had the clutch pulled in, NOT in neutral....

See I don’t really understand the whole starter issue because I have a 250fx and it starts up just fine every time. It might just be an inconsistency issue or something I’m not sure
I have a 2016 ttr 110 that you can review but it has a little bit of tap on the high end but that doesn't effect the power
