    Shame to see it boxed in like that but it’s the first I’ve seen of it for about 50 years.
    These were built by Hall Lifts & Escalators. This one was installed by Otis soon after Hall L & E were taken over. It was the only one that I got to work on but fascinating to build. Jack, the guy leading the work, was a great engineer and a deep knowledge of these paternosters
    I guess that Otis took on the contract for the job with the rest of the Hall business

    2 people were disappointed that the car didn't turn upside-down when it got to the top ;-)

    There is a paternoster lift at Loughborough college in the UK. It was actively used and loved by all there in the 1980's when I was a student. But sadly it has now been boarded over and not used. It really was a great system and very good at moving hundreds of students efficiently. I think it was about 7 floors. Such a shame it was stopped. I'm sure with modern safety systems and sensors it could be made safe

    I used this system many times when i worked at that hospital. But never had the guts to keep going higher than the top floor as i was'nt sure how it was configured.. Good video! Really innovative idea and quick way of moving between floors, fun too!

    Thank you, I couldn't figure before what the strange elevator shafts were for.
    What a pitty this closed before I've started working here.

    How interesting to see this! I started my nursing training at NPH in 1971 and used to nip on and of the Paternoster lift to get to other floors, with far less safety enhancement than this film shows! Pleased it endured though. (Marian)

    There used to be one of these at Newcastle University.
    We were always too scared to stay inside when we reached the top .. everyone thought it would come back upside down. ... the fact that there were floor tiles on the bottom and a light at the top didn't seem to register in our brains.

    I went on these when i was a kid and was terrified when it got to the top thinking i was going to be crushed. Then years later used them frequently once i worked in the hospital

      because there is a risk you unbalance the top or the bottom wheel (depend where you are) so the lift could broke or just stop it.

    Been out of order for a couple of years now. Such a shame as it was really useful for staff. Patient lifts are slow and overused. No funds for reinstatement apparently.

    • @michaelturner4457
      @michaelturner4457 4 года назад +1

      No funds, likely no spare parts available either, and people who did servicing have probably retired. Paternosters haven't been made for probably 50 years or more now.

      such a shame, I didn't know that, I haven't worked there for 6 years now, and I used to love the paternoster!

    What happens if you stand on the safety flap?

    • @TheChriscarr1210
      @TheChriscarr1210  7 месяцев назад

      Nothing really. It hinges upwards but is strong enough to support your body weight if you walk on it. I think it's to prevent any body parts getting trapped when the lift is ascending.

    I thought the paternoster was supposed to be behind locked doors, was the door not closed all the way? Or does that door not lock anymore?
