@@eazye519 i mean i like TNG as much as the next guy, but DS9 has way more stakes in terms of plot devices. so its a hot take to say nah as if that’s definitive. sisko was by far the least “starfleet” type captain. watching his character development was awesome. something u dont get in TNG
Nog’s character arc showed how anyone can turn their life around he was an inspiration in my life as he showed me I can do anything as an Autistic adult that really rang true with me RIP Nog
It's hard to believe that Aron Eisenberg who played Nog in DS9 was 23 (my age) when he started that role... he looked and sounded so young, and still does.
Who says that DS9 didn't have exploration and "trekking"??? Good Lord, they discovered an entire new quadrant and went all over the place in the runabouts and the Defiant. Also, Nog is among my favorite characters of all time. Thank you Aron!
Aron's comments are thoughtful and considerably more complete than some of the other actors' reflections on what formed the basis of the difference between ST:DS9 and the other productions in the Trek franchise. I agree with this actor and with Ronald D. Moore, DS9 was the best precisely because it WAS NOT formulaic and took the risks the other shows would not take.
Are you kidding me? It had a very predictable formula - it was a complete rip-off of WWII, and they didn't take a lot of risks - they made Garak stop being bi because the network said they didn't like it (google it), they always had the black characters date other black characters (Jake and Ben both only date black women, Jake even finds a black Bajoran). They played it safe, they even stopped doing their James Bond-esqe stories because the Bond people said they didn't appreciate it. Predictable plots were typical of DS0 - probably over half of the plots were taken straight from TNG. I love DS9 the most, but it was very formulaic, I don't get how people can't see that.
LOL, rip off of WW2. Funny how many things you got incorrect in such a short list.. Jake's first girlfriend wasn't black, not infringing Bond isn't 'playing it safe', and there wasn't much originality in TNG in the first place. "But it was very formulaic," leaves out that it was considerably less so than TOS or TNG. Short of killing off main characters they'll all follow a basic formula, but DS9 had considerably more leeway with running story lines than the previous shows. The percentage of eps where you couldn't tell roughly what would happen once you met the players and saw the conflicts in TOS and TNG was very, very low.
Being a relatively new fan to DS9, I have to agree with his comments of it being more appreciated now. I grew up with Voyager and Enterprise, never had an appreciation for DS9 when I was younger - until I decided to go back and watch it in this past half a year to a year.
Nog was an annoying trouble maker. But, I was impressed when he came back from Star Fleet Academy a straight laced kid who couldn't stand Jake's sloppiness. He was a true shiner. He was a good Kazon in Voyager, too.
Heard about the sad news earlier today. R.I.P. Aron "Nog" Eisenberg. Thank you for the life that you offered us, the fans of Star Trek. Find solace wherever you may be...
DS9 is my favorite Star Trek series. I loved this show ever since it came out, and I have watched through 5 to 10 times since. I think the character of Nog was great. You see him grow as a person throughout the series, and every episode he was in, I liked his character more and more. Thank you Aron for doing such a great job playing the role. RIP
The final scene in "It's Only a Paper Moon" between Nog and Vick Fontain was SO absolutely heartbreaking when Nog breaks down on how scared he was by losing his leg (spoiler). Aron Eisenberg should be Won an Emmy for that episode.
DS9 was very different to the existing Trek, but they still demonstrated a clear understanding of the show's purpose and achieved it beautifully.. unlike a CERTAIN NEW SERIES THAT WILL NOT BE NAMED.
"It's only a paper moon" has to be in the top 10 DS9 episodes. Everyone can relate to just wanting to live in a fantasy (protected from reality) but knowing it can't last.
Trekking the minds and personalities of species and individuals, a clash of cultures. TOS got quite dark frequently. TNG to, but TOS and DS9 and VGR all were good at hitting the tough questions. You're awsome Aron!
I always wanted to see a Star Trek series based on a space station or Starbase.when Deep Space 9 finally aired. my dreams had finally come true. I had to shows based on space stations;Babylon 5 & Deep Space 9. showing life in the UFP & it's allies as well as it's enemies. When Nog join Starfleet Academy with Capt.Sisko becoming his mentor & well like a 2nd father. would like to see a Capt.Nog commanding the USS Defiant series & as new C/O of D.S.9, with Avery Brooks as Adm.Sisko & Jake now full fledged U.F.P Reporter/Correspondent. Aron Eisenberg was great as Nog.
I prefer ds9 over the other star trek shows because more interesting storylines and things actually happened well founded storylines are great but some times you actually want to some action. Plus the villains were great
True, but most of the cast is now well over 50 and he was only in his late twenties when he played Nog. Even 50 seems young to me these days (I'm the same age as Nana who played Kira)
At first I didn't really like DS9, but now I love it for the reasons Mr. Eisenberg mentioned. Love the scene where Nog told Sisko why he wanted to be in Starfleet.
I love Aron's comments. So articulate and thoughtful. Have you listened to Brent Spiner? RUclips one of his interviews. He dosent even know what episodes he was involved in. He is oblivious to his work on TNG. Sad.
you must remember that aron was a more recurring character in DS9 Brent had HEAPS to do in just about every episode for seven years. The cast have often said that their work days were 12-18 hours a day from 1987-1994, then a movie a week after the show wrapped. Makes sense that Brent says nowadays that his trek experience seemed like one big 7 year episode. Aron had great stuff to do on the show but he would have only worked some days per week/per episode.
Be real, they're actors. They're paid to remember the lines for a few minutes, to get it on video. All viewers did was watch the shows, a tiny fraction of what the actors actually did with working on set all day, and in some ways not even the most important part of their day. They shouldn't remember it the next week, much less years later.
And I was hoping for a Nog appearance in Picard... I mean... he did make to become a starship captain in some of the future glimpses of him. Woulda been perfect. But alas... R.I.P. Aron Eisenberg. ;(
Totally agree Anthony, recently I took the time to view all 7 seasons DS9 again after all those years. I was amazed how I liked every episode and wondered myself what I missed during the time it was in production. Is it because I am older now? Poor Aron, Nogs laugh always made me smile..
What he said about the reception of DS9 by the fans at the time of the show‘s production... well, why does it seem so actual? What does it remind me of? And what was that about „you can‘t do the same thing over and over again“? Let‘s think about all that, shall we?!
RIP great actor and great personality. He is a special person in the Trek Family. Thank You Aaron.
Yep
RIP Aron. You will be greatly missed. He passed Sept. 21, 2019 of kidney failure.
Bombastic Buster heart attack bro
I much preferred DS9 over all of the other trek shows cause it was more character driven with great actors.
Nah TNG is the best by far.

RIP Aron, Nog and your memory will live forever in star trek.
I've read most of the comments and everyone forgets he was on Voyager. He was supposed to kill Chakotay to earn his manhood as a Kazon!
i was just watching that episode today and thought...wait a moment that sounds like nog...
I remember that
Tim England Wow man thanks for that. I hadn't even realized that was the same actor. I remember that scene tho... thx
Which episode is that?
@@xorcst "Initiations" - Voyager, Season 2, Episode 2. It's another standout performance from Aron.
he seems like such a sweetheart. may his memory be for blessing.
He always gives the best interviews and his responses are always full, honest, thought out and never generic. I miss him.
It's hard to believe that Aron Eisenberg who played Nog in DS9 was 23 (my age) when he started that role... he looked and sounded so young, and still does.
Nah he looks like he's in his 40s and that's what he is.
Alan Parker He's in his 40's now, but he was in his 20's when he played in DS9.
*****
Right? And he sounds 14.
He has a medical condition that limited his growth.
He's basically a type of midget.
nog was one of my fav DS9 characters
I was going to say the same thing. I have to say he was my favorite. Just for the reasons he is talking about here.
He played the role real well! (And I didn't know he was much older than the character role till now, haha.)
Yes, while Jake was obviously aging, Nog looked basically the same all the time :)
Nog was A GREAT CHARACTER!!! I loved that kid...
Who says that DS9 didn't have exploration and "trekking"??? Good Lord, they discovered an entire new quadrant and went all over the place in the runabouts and the Defiant. Also, Nog is among my favorite characters of all time. Thank you Aron!
Sisco was always great. But the show took off when the defiant and then worf showed up.

+Alphonsus Jr. It's sad, but not surprising to see such narrow-minded statements still occurring in our society and especially on the net..
I loved watching his character evolve. He started out locked up in the beginning for stealing, but became a Starfleet officer.
Being a relatively new fan to DS9, I have to agree with his comments of it being more appreciated now. I grew up with Voyager and Enterprise, never had an appreciation for DS9 when I was younger - until I decided to go back and watch it in this past half a year to a year.
We are lucky to have you in the Star Trek universe. You will always be on DS-9 where we can visit with you from time to time.
Nog was an annoying trouble maker. But, I was impressed when he came back from Star Fleet Academy a straight laced kid who couldn't stand Jake's sloppiness. He was a true shiner. He was a good Kazon in Voyager, too.
+lifeishooey What was his ogla name again?
+Brian Rose I don't remember, and I just finished watching the series again a few weeks ago. You can probably see the episode here on youtube.
I just realized, Nog had an arc pretty similar to Bulk and Skull from Power Rangers. Except less bumbling toward the end
I've been watching DS9 a lot lately and Nog is right, we didn't appreciate it as much as we should have. It really is the best Trek.
Heard about the sad news earlier today. R.I.P. Aron "Nog" Eisenberg. Thank you for the life that you offered us, the fans of Star Trek. Find solace wherever you may be...

R.I.P 1969-2019

That was the best of this series of interviews, imo.Cool dude.

Nog honestly grew the most in this show. Definitely one of my favorite characters.
Wow, he still sounds like a teenage kid. His uncle Quark was one of my favorite characters on Star Trek along with Odo, Garak, and Worf.
DS9 was very different to the existing Trek, but they still demonstrated a clear understanding of the show's purpose and achieved it beautifully.. unlike a CERTAIN NEW SERIES THAT WILL NOT BE NAMED.
Inspirational and highly intelligent young man. Do hope he gets more acting work, he so deserves it.
Even if he was young I was impressed by his acting. Such a young child with so much talent behind his character Nog. Many good actors on star trek
He was 25 when he started playing Nog
man its amazing i had no idea what he looked like. the character really was its own entity. he was really good
RIP Aaron. Thanks for your wonderful contribution to DS9!
I totally loved Nog, alot of affection. He was a sweetie for a Ferengi.
"It's only a paper moon" has to be in the top 10 DS9 episodes. Everyone can relate to just wanting to live in a fantasy (protected from reality) but knowing it can't last.
RIP. Going boldly to that next place.
Voyager was my favorite but Ds9 is like watching a Shakesperian play and was a much better show over all...

At first I didn't really like DS9, but now I love it for the reasons Mr. Eisenberg mentioned. Love the scene where Nog told Sisko why he wanted to be in Starfleet.
I like it because of the large showcase of characters and their back stories as what roles each played.

"What kind of a name is Plix Tixaplik?" Best line on DS9. RIP Aron.
Aron did the impossible, he made Star Trek fans sympathetic with a Ferengi.
He was spot-on; I've liked it way more now than I did back then.
BDE... You will be missed...
a very under rated actor :) loved him as Kar in voyager "initiations"
Extremely hard 2 believe he was 29 when he did his last season of DS9. He looks way younger!
Rest in Peace Aron. One of my favorite episodes featuring you had to be "Valiant". Just a fucking awesome man. You will be missed.
that was my second favourite nog episode, but my favourite overall episode of ds9 was the magnificent ferengi

There was a good amount of fine character development and some fascinatingly dark episodes in DS9. Great and memorable series.
DS9 was and is my favorite Trek. I didn't like Nog at first but I grew to like him.
What a gem
May you be in a better place.
The writers loved his portrayal of Nog and really expanded his character as the show grew as consequence.

Aron speaks the truth. From being the "black sheep" of the Trek family, DS9 has become my favourite of all the shows.

Just for me in my opinion, as I do love all trek (excluding new JJverse) TNG, DS9, VOY, TOS and ENT tie for last. Just me though.
DS9 was the best of all Star Trek series in my opinion.
