I really appreciate your video. I grew up watching Van Halen, Eric Johnson, RRhoads. They were my guitar gods. Now I’m 60. Through RUclips and videos like this, I’ve come to appreciate so many guitarists like Beck, Mayer, V. Gill and others. When you take the time to show the nuances that I couldn’t hear, it really opens a whole new world. Thank you!
Jeff is definitely Mr. Microtonal. I saw him with Beck, Bogert and Appice when they were calling themselves The Jeff Beck Group. Then I saw him in 1980 for the There And Back tour, with Stevie Ray Vaughan, in Oakland with Jennifer Batten, with Tal wilkenfeld, with Rhonda Smith and Vinnie Colauita. He's fantastic! Nice explanations of some of his technique here, Jules.
My in-laws got me the green one! I wanted that guitar for many years, but couldn’t justify the purchase for lots of reasons. I haven’t gotten to play it yet because of COVID restrictions. I get more and more excited to play it one day. I was happy to see this video about it since not many have been made recently.
That's awesome Mitchell, it's definitely a great guitar and is super "stratty" in the best sort of way, definitely recommend one if you want a great rock n roll axe! :)
Wonderful insight into Beck's style, light on specs of the guitar, which is what I came for but followed for the awesome breakdown of technique and clear love of the music.
First of all, great video and excellent playing, really hard to peg jeff becks style and touch, I think you did a fantastic job. I had a question about the signature model tone pots. It seems that my tone control #2 for bridge and middle also rolls off the high end for the neck pickup. Is that a standard configuration?
Thank you Taylor! Honestly not sure about that configuration so I don't want to misguide you and say yes or no! I usually just have one tone pot that controls all three pickups- and then usually just leave it wide open the whole time anyway! :)
Hey Dave, thanks for checking out the video! I'm pretty sure Beck's whammy bar screws in... and he's using locking tuners w the rolling nut, those two parts of the setup really effect how well the bar works/ guitar stays in tune. Hope that helps!
You have some convincing JB chops Jules. I really appreciated the bit where you talk about him emulating a harmonica player. I hadn;t thought of that, but it's spot on. I have always been aware of Jeff Beck, but I recently watched the video clip of him playing Cause we ended as lovers with Tal & Vinnnie and it totally blew my mind. You really have to watch him to fully appreciate his gift. BTW, what amp/model are you plugged into?
I really appreciate that thanks man! I was actually there at the crossroads festival when Jeff played w Tal/ Vinnie- I’ll never forget it! I was plugged into a ceriatone OTS in this video, really great budget friendly dumble clone!
Jules, I now have the JB Strat and the harmonics are sounding much easier for me. It is so nice to have this model. Thank you. P.S. Star Spangled Banner with a slide ? Your slide is great.
I'm considering buying this guitar and found your channel. Excellent demonstration - really was not expecting to find and actual JB fan using his techniques - most people just demo a guitar with a bunch of CRAP pentatonic garbage - you actually demonstrated the music I actually want to play on this thing. Really nice video, and great origin story of seeing Jeff for the first time. The only thing I am concerned about is seeing some reviewers on Sweetwater saying they swapped out the pickups for Lindy Fralins. If I spend 2k don't want to have to first change stuff. But anyway thanks, this video was very helpful for me.
Awesome, Daniel! Thanks so much for that comment I really appreciate it... I totally get the pickup thing, they're a certain thing on this axe... If you're already hip to that part then I'd at least say that that won't surprise you about it. I'm not crazy about this guitar's neck but simply because of how the whammy bar is setup I'm able to do so much of the Jeff Beck stuff that don't bug me too much. I think they could be upgraded but the way the bar works it really does allow you to access a lot of that stuff pretty well!
@@julesleyhe Ok so we're both on the exact same page with this guitar. (I had to rip those noiseless out of a Clapton Strat and replace them with Fender custom 69's.) I think now I may try to take my Strat plus with Lace Sensors and just try the Jeff whammy bar adjustment I saw in another youtube video and see if that works instead. I really like that quiver thing he does, hopefully this adjustment will stay in tune - not betting on it though. Glad I found your channel - you really have the Jeff whammy technique down pat. Saw your Star-Spangled Banner video - sounded great, must've been a blast I'm sure.
Super cool, Rory! I'll never forget playing once the bridge was floating the right amount for the first time, tons of new tiny little things to check out and dig into- have fun!!
Hi Jules. Great job. If you don't mind, what is your setup? A Hiwatt maybe? Pedals? Your sound is killing it! You are getting some serious dynamic range out of those noiseless picks.
Hey Clayton, awesome thank you! I'm playing through a Ceriatone OTS 50, REALLY great amp! The Jeff Beck strat has some awesome pickups (Fender hot noiseless) that really get the glassy strat tone pretty close to perfectly... other than that there's a Ceriatone centura (their Klon centaur clone) and I can't recommend that pedal enough too! Thanks for checking out the video!
Great video. Two things I would point: 1) installing Wilkinson split roller nut would add extra twang. You could find Japanese licensed correct Wilkinson nut reissued by Gotoh. It costs around USD 100 and totally worth it 2) Beck uses American Deluxe bridge wirh Callaham block. That gives mote sustain amd better control of tremolo arm (it would not jump in the hole). And if you check of Beck live concerts you would note that tremolo arm hole is located closer to bridge pickup (instead of bridge end as on signature model - both production models amd even Masterbuilt). That gives more space for those pinky tricks. But that also means you could not upgrade to Callaham block unless you also change the bridge plate. Which I believe Fender did this on purpose to make such upgrades a nightmare. Still worth doing that 100%. Cheers.
Curious about the setup of the tremolo? How many Springs and how far off the guitar it is at the back etc ? How about a vid about the setup of your JB model? Nice technique, not an easy guy to sound like.
Good call, and thanks for inquiring about that super important part of the whole game! In my case my whammy bar is floating with about a step and a half of play (it's about the most you can get before the bridge hits the guitar body and can't go up further UNLESS you reeeeeally have it floating a ton... but a step and a half is plenty for me!) and I have 3 springs in the back, just the right amount of tension to really be able to manipulate the whammy bar comfortably. Thanks for the great comment and for checking out the video!
So cool, Orlando- really appreciate it man! I love Jeff a ton and it's really awesome to help others with some of his techniques... He is human after all and we can definitely at least improve our own playing by trying to add some of his flavor. Thanks for checking out the video!
Great demo! do you find these pickups do a better job retaining highs when you roll down the volume for clean sounds? Sounds like the do but also wanted to hear from your experience plying different guitars through same rig
I'm seriously considering a JB sig Strat, but I'm also torn between it, the white Eric Johnson Strat, Am-Pro II or even American Original 60s. I'm leaning towards the JB, but I'm a little scared of the noiseless pickups. I had a mid/late 2000s S1 Noiseless Strat and never cared for the pickups. I do a play a lot of cleans, so I love that really bell-like, vintage sound.
Jules, fantastic review. Many thanks...I smiled at the ' Beck'ie' reference... I've enjoyed learning to be melodic with the trem. It forces you to pay a lot of attention to what you do. I wonder if any Strat's conventional trem can be set up to float as reliably as a JB model? I have mine set to 1/2 step up, but curious what the JB model is set to on the pull up. 🤔
@@julesleyhe Yes u can set up a vintage style strat trem to do the same. You adjust the bridge block back as far as rout allows.I can get a major 3rd pull up on an original mexi strat, and it stays in tune perfectly, the nut happens to be spot on, always remains in tune. You may need to back the 6 bridge mounting screws a tad to not get binding, but I never touched them. Bonus pro tip; u can also use trem without bar(or with it still there) and get unique non beck derivative sounds by pulling up the back and bouncing/pushing the bridge itself.
Hi Jules, Jeff has been a big influence on me and I love his music. I’m thinking of buying a Jeff Beck strat and I wanted to ask you if the guitar has treble bleed fitted or does it loses the treble when rolling down the volume… from your demo video it seems like it does have treble bleed fitted. But idk…
Hey man, thanks for checking out the video! Honestly I'm not 100% sure at this point with rolling down the volume (I sold this guitar a little while ago or I'd check!) but I remember the tone staying pretty similar when rolling the volume off a smidge... If you can get your hands on a Jeff Beck model strat I sure would recommend it, you seem like the right player for it!

Just found on your channel (new sub) - really loved the deep dive on Jeff Beck's approach. Loved your harmonic distortion comparison to a harp player with overdriven mic. I'm a huge Beck fan and I loved your playing on this artist spotlight. Thanks again Jules!
Sorry, bet you've never heard this before - any relation to Jim 😂 ? Jeez, I loved that show when I lived Canada. Nice video and playing - a bit too much gain/overdrive for the default tone, but when you wind it back to clean it up is perfect 🎸👍. Where Were You? almost make me cry every time. The subtle whammy control is amazing great job ❤.
Building one right this minute, maple board snd mint pickguard on white, "premium" Artec Alnico 5 versions of the Hot Noiseless stacks. Same controls with no-load tones and I added a push-pull neck-on in position 1using a super switch. Soldering iron is smokin', fingers crossed!!
great video and great technique, man! I'm just wondering how does this guitar perform when you play other styles of music, I mean stylish fender style music, given that the pickups on this guitar are ceramic, quite different from other fenders, thank you so much!
Hey Yew, thanks for checking out the video! I love how this guitar sounds as far as Fender Strat tone goes.... I plugged it in at a jam and the keyboardist said "it sounds SUPER STRATTY!" and it really does, kinda glassy and each pickup is very distinct.
@@julesleyhe Thanks Jules! That's comforting cuz I actually have one in surf green, which I really love, and yet haven't managed to get some super stratty sound out of it. Now with your comfirmation I know that it CAN make great sound when my technique is improved and my gear updated!
This morning I bought a mint JB signature on Reverb. Could you tell me if this model has "Hot" noiseless Pups ? Great view of the trem bar moves on the harmonic lick. Thx !
Hey Marcelo thanks! Jeff is usually plugged into (at least) a Marshall and I've definitely seen the Klon Centaur at the end of his rig before. In this case I had the Amp set EQ to 12 oclock and Overdrive channel to 4 with the Ceriatone Centura getting a lot of the harmonics to pop!
@@julesleyhe , Thank you my friend! The tone of Mr. Beck's Stratocaster is unique, and for me, the coolest. You did a great job on your setup for this demo! Thanks again!
How thick is the neck on this guitar? I’ve read that Jeff likes guitars with fat necks, but these models don’t look like they have a chunky neck. Thanks!
Hey Roderick, it's kind of a weird neck honestly, not super chunky but kind of awkward in my hands at least! Great q.... I'm thinking about getting a replacement neck from warmoth for this axe actually because I like everything about this guitar but I'm not crazy about the neck. Thanks for checking out the video!
Hi Daniel! Wow, funny you should ask- I'm currently shooting my lesson videos for my patreon channel that I'm putting together- I'll have clips on my channel/ a full page with TONS of lessons... I'm going to focus a lot on Jeff Beck since I love him/ have lots to say about him, I'd love to get a lesson on Midnight Walker up there for you! :) Thanks for checking out the video, all the best!
@@julesleyhe is this jeff beck signature a custom or a recent standard ? If i buy a standard signature will i have the same tone for the neck ans head ?
Right on Tim thank you! It possibly could set up a certain way... but this Strat definitely feels great and all of the whammy stuff is a pleasure with this axe. Thanks for checking out the video!
Jeff was, and is, my all time favorite guitar player, however, regardless of the nuts I've used, (and I've tried them all), the guitar just does not stay in tune when using the bar. What's the deal?
I’m right there with you with Jeff as my all time fav… have you tried big bend’s nut sauce in the nut? That tends to work wonders, even just putting graphite from a lead pencil helps too… try either of those/ when you restring I always try and just keep the strings moving around between bending and stretching the strings to kinda “get used to how it works around here” for lack of a better term and it works pretty well for me- hope that helps!
Curious to try those... I feel like these pickups aren't THE VERY BEST but at least for me they definitely help achieve a bunch of his tones/ the bridge pickup is so icy clean it's crazy!
I know for a fact that the signatures that Fender gave him were never used, his tech told me he didn't like them. He stuck with his parts caster with Basswood body. Don't fall for this marketing BS. Aside from that JB is one guy that can be copied but no-one can capture the ssence that was him. It's a bit like wearing a dead man's shoes. It's about time Fender woke up and started providing value for money instead of pandering to collectors.
True, he has a Custom Shop with single-coil Suhr pickups with hum killer system, the big roller nut (Wilkinson?), nito finish, and Fender doesn't offer this guitar -Jeff had it modded, BUT, I bought the JB Artist model (same as this vid) in 2019 to get my idea of the ideal Strat (staggered locking tuners, no string trees, roller nut, better access neck heel, noiseless pickups), and I think it's incredible. I think a lot of people will have a different ideal pickup in mind, but this is great for me, so maybe give it a try some time! Wish they had more colours, like red and natural wood, then maybe it would be more popular. Btw, I just adjusted my trem per Carl Verhayen's video -works perfectly!

Hard to believe we lost the guitar Icon Jeff Beck a couple of days ago.
Couldn't have said it better myself... Man, just about the greatest loss possible to the world of music/ guitar!
Sounds awesome, hope it goes great!
great video and great technique, man! I'm just wondering how does this guitar perform when you play other styles of music, I mean stylish fender style music, given that the pickups on this guitar are ceramic, quite different from other fenders, thank you so much!
by stylish I mean typical, sorry:)
Just curious, what string gauge are you using? Good job!
Thanks Jim! Playing 10's n they sound plenty beefy to me!
Hi. Was the bridge floating when the guitar arrived? Or did you have to adust it yourself? I just ordered one. Please advise and thank you.
Great question, when I got mine it was setup ready to trem up about a minor third… so I wouldn’t be surprised if it came setup ready for this!
@@julesleyhe thank you Sir.
Is that guitar straight into an amp? Or are you using a pedal? I’m very interested in buying one
Larry
Hi Larry, just right into the amp! I'd highly recommend this amp!
Nice! I also have a JB Strat. Best Strat I have ever owned!
Right!? So cool, great sound and obviously looks so cool... LOVE this guitar!!
Only thing missing is the reversed head stock. The wah part - it's called a "parked" wah.
That's right! I love the reverse head stock... and parking the wah in the right spot!
This morning I bought a mint JB signature on Reverb. Could you tell me if this model has "Hot" noiseless Pups ? Great view of the trem bar moves on the harmonic lick. Thx !
These are the hot noiseless pickups! Hope you dig yours, I’ve always loved this axe a lot!
@@julesleyhe Much appreciated !
What the set and setup tones (ampl & pedals) that the usually of the Mr. Beck use and that you set too to this demonstration? Best Regards
Cool demo, Dude.🤙
Thanks Richard, appreciate it!
Since u have a Beck Strat and know his style a lot, can u make a lesson for the Song Midnight Walker ? :)
Only a brave man play Jeff licks. Thanks for the good review.
Thanks man, appreciate it!!
Hey man great video
Right on Roman, thanks buddy!
I love olympic white strat 😍
Me too! :)
Wait how do you slow down the video?
Hey Jimi! It's in the video settings icon, I believe it's the bottom right corner of the video when you move the cursor over the video! :-)
5:32 great sounding harp brother!
Thanks Eric!!
Is this the 2022 model? Thanks!
Hey Thelonious! I believe it was a 2014.... I actually recently sold it so I can't check! But it was a pretty darn cool guitar!
@@julesleyhe just got my 2022 JB Strat thanks for your vlog...can I ask questions on guitar matters from you other than in
YT? THANKS
A great review ! Surprised u don't have a lot of suscribers
Thanks man really appreciate it!
@@julesleyhe is this jeff beck signature a custom or a recent standard ? If i buy a standard signature will i have the same tone for the neck ans head ?
Hot playing! I wish my floyd could do that
Right on Tim thank you! It possibly could set up a certain way... but this Strat definitely feels great and all of the whammy stuff is a pleasure with this axe. Thanks for checking out the video!
You getting really close to Jeff’s tone. Is that just the guitar straight? Or are you using pedals.
Thanks Larry, nope just going straight into my Ceriatone OTS 50 and it's cranked!
That tends to work wonders, even just putting graphite from a lead pencil helps too… try either of those/ when you restring I always try and just keep the strings moving around between bending and stretching the strings to kinda “get used to how it works around here” for lack of a better term and it works pretty well for me- hope that helps!
wow Jules
Thanks Ridan!! :)
Yeah dude
:)
Very nice playing and explaining. But you didn't go into the guitar specks that much
Thank you Michael! I'd definitely recommend these axes!
“Hey, everyone, this is Jules Leyhe…”
My brain: Trailer Park Boys?
You’re not the first one to say that!! 😎🤘🏼🤘🏼
nice
Thanks, CT!
Great work on the Jeff Beck style, that tremolo bar control is tough to achieve!
Thank you Phil!! Indeed, the whammy bar is life time's work on it's own, I marvel at how Beck uses it!! Thanks for checking out the video!
super
Thanks Federico!
This demystified some misty stuff!
Love hearing that, thanks so much Rory!
dude . you sound just like the man himself
Thanks man!! Jeff is the man!
It is just similar to a regular strat.
Similar, but the pickups really do help get to that Jeff Beck sound/ whammy bar!
Not fond of Jeff Beck's newest signature strat ceramic pickups in his strat guitar 🎸 it's shrill and harsh sounding
Curious to try those... I feel like these pickups aren't THE VERY BEST but at least for me they definitely help achieve a bunch of his tones/ the bridge pickup is so icy clean it's crazy!
It comes back "pretty in tune" promps the question of why the Floyd rose was invented and millions were spent on it
That’s what I wanna know! Thanks for checking out the video!
Agreed!
Btw, I just adjusted my trem per Carl Verhayen's video -works perfectly!
too much noise from pickUps. Even tho, an amazing guitar
Thanks man!
