Just finished the BOM Believe Applique and Monther's Day Pansy's Applique projects today. While there aren't wool, I used so much that I learned from this video. Jennifer was absolutely write. Can't imagine doing any applique project without the applique pressing sheet. What a great tool. Also, Jen has been totally right about the need for friction pens, micron pens, and the 2.5 X 6 ruler. Absolute essentials for any sewing room.
We're so glad you had fun with those projects and learned a lot from this video! Those tools really are so helpful! Jen doesn't ever promote something she doesn't use and love, because she knows that good tools make all the difference.
Something I find helpful is using an overhead to lay on top of my appliqué to see if it is in the right spot either while layering or on the black background wool. I have a scanner/copier so for the December Shabby Mat, I just made an overhead of two of the shapes, including the scallops. Then when setting my shapes on the black, I can set the overhead on top and nudge the appliqué to get it into the right place. This idea was shared with me by another wool appliqué crafter and I find it very helpful.
We appreciate your suggestion and those are great ideas! Thank you for your support and happy that you are enjoying this project! Thanks for your comment! - Abby
I really enjoy doing handwork and watching one of your utubes and see the wool pads and I am SO excited. They are beautiful. So cute and thank you for sharing with us. You have become my very favorite crafter on utube!
Thank you for watching! We would love to see your work! We have a wool applique group on facebook if you'd like to join and see what others are making as well! ~Leah
I wonder if ironing the shape flex on the bottom instead of top would be good. It seems like you could handstitch without going through the sticky on fusible as you wouldn’t need to go all the way through? Thanks for beautiful video.
You can iron the shape flex onto the bottom of your Shabby mat; however, the shape flex is used to stabilize the wool so that it does not move as much while you are doing appliqué and embroidery stitching. -Kyla
Thanks so much for another great tutorial. I just ordered my first wool kit from Shabby Fabrics. I can’t wait to start it. FYI Shapeflex comes in black as well as white. Useful for black wool.
To make layouts easy (when a lightbox doesn't work) I have printed the layout--footprint--on a transparency and put it together just like the footprint. Then I can lay it on top of the project and see where the parts should go. Once part is in place, the transparency has to be moved before ironing.
Tip: Shape Flex 101 (SF 101 by Pellon) comes in Black and white and you can use colored sharpie markers to alter edge color of the white on colored pieces or Inktense-heat set with the iron when you fuse and it is permanent. Happy stitching.
You're so welcome! We're so glad you found it helpful and encouraging! Wool really is fun to work with and once you see the process, you realize it's achievable by anyone!
I have recently bought my first appliqué kit. I would GREATLY appreciate if you could add in the directions, which needle to use with each thread when using the different threads in the steps. I am new to appliqué.
Hi Celine, we are so glad you are trying something new. We think it would be very helpful if you check out Jen and Tammy's tutorial on the Mug Rug kit you purchased: www.shabbyfabrics.com/free-downloads-and-video/95 Hope this helps! - Abby
The SF101 Shape Flex is used to prevent stretching when you are sewing the applique on, so it would go on before you stitch. If you have any further questions please let me know as I am always happy to help! :) -Kyla
Jen, can you tell me what kind of wool do everyone used but nobody talk about it?? Is that felt? Or wool to sew for pants, clothing?? Do you sell that kind of wool?? I just saw that kind of work this afternoon and I am in love!! Can you answers me, please? Thanks. (The colour is marvellous!)

Also, are embroidery and appliqué instructions included in these kits. Thanks so much.

Fusible webbing: what is it and what is the purpose of it?? On what paper do you trace your pattern?? Is the appliqué pressing sheet is the same thing that the fusible webbing??
Fusible web is very popular for appliqué. It melts to adhere the fabrics together and is available in various weights. The tracing paper is available on our site: www.shabbyfabrics.com/tracing-kit-P60222.aspx?ref=SearchAutocomplete all notions used in the video is in the “Show More” section under the video- Yajaira
We did do our fusible off-camera for this video, but Jen talks you through how to do it from about the 8 minute mark to the 11 minute mark. You'll trace your shapes using our reversed diagram to the fusible, then cut roughly around the edge. Then you'll fuse that down to your wool, cut it out exactly on the line, and then fuse that down to your background. Let us know if you have any other questions! We're always happy to help. - Morgan
