    I have a different read on what goes on in Michael's head during the 13:22 pause, if I may.
    To me, David doesn't understand that what Michael wants above all is to be shown respect. I think that's what he means when he says 'I think I deserve more', he deserves more than being forced to hop in his car and drive all the way to NY to get to talk with Wallace.
    David thinks Michael just wants his birthday party since that's what sparked the issue in the first place, he thinks he can treat Micheal like a kid and appease him by giving him his party, while at the same keeping the status quo with Charles. He doesn't get that Michael at this point wasn't about having his party, he was about being shown respect and not being chaperoned by Charles.
    When Michael realises that David is intent on treating him like a kid by not budging on the Charles issue and thinking he can appease him by giving him a party like you would a kid, he feels he's not getting the respect he deserves at Dundler Mifflin anymore after 15 years of service and decides to quit.
    This is the straw that breaks the camel back, when you take into account that Michael was already pissed at David for sending Holly back to Nashua, which was a really sucky sucky thing to do.

    9,986,000 minutes is literally nearly 19 years, which makes sense. So that's how long Michael would have been a Dunder Mifflin employee.
    BUT if you only count 8 hour days, five day weeks, 50 weeks a year..... Yeah, that's 83 years of work hours 😂

  • @toddvanevenhoven7736

    Its a bold story arc because Elba's character is doing what Wallace knows what needs to be done: be the adult in the room at Scranton. He's there to do Michaels job and clean the place up. Which indirectly leads to Jim also having to deal with an adult manager. And no amount of smooth talking or Halpert charm is gonna work. So it was interesting to see Jim so off his game.
    Last, as others pointed out all Michael ever wanted was to be shown some respect. Too often corporate forgets to throw its an employee's a bone.

    This episode (& arc) is a masterclass in "Mistakes in Management".
    Michael sees Wallace as his friend. He also realizes that he's put DM's interests above his own several times. Since Wallace is so hands off, doesn't seemingly bother to really get to know the guy who is directly reporting to him & only thinks in terms of business, he can't pick up on this and misunderstands why he's so upset.
    Michael thinks Charles is moving in on his territory when he is just trying to do the actual job he was hired to do. If he had just let Charles have his day, he would have been gone & Michael could have run his branch, albeit under some actual supervision. Also, if he had owned the Golden Ticket idea regardless of the result, like a manager should, he wouldn't be in this spot.
    We will realize later that Charles is AWFUL at identifying the strengths & weaknesses of his employees.
    And now I know more about the windows at The Office than I will ever need to know, lmao.

Wrong! 9,986,000 minutes divided 60 is 166,433 hours, which divided 24 is 6,934 days, which divided 365 is 19 years. Sounds about right.

    Really like this episode and the whole MSPC arc. I hadn’t seen The Wire when I first watched this but Idris Elba has such a commanding seriousness about him, it balances perfectly with Steve Carell. Not to mention he plays American so well that his British accent still sounds fake to me. I don’t think Charles is a bad guy. He loosens up an episode later when he encourages an office wide soccer game . His behavior this episode was obviously brought on by the stress of having to deal with a man child. He correctly sized Jim up as a slacker and for how weird Dwight is, he’s still the top salesman so Charles gives him respect. They made his character goofier in the company picnic episode later on but he’s great in these episodes.

    • @Mulverine

    Idk if this is a flaw in the script or my brain (tho i have a guess lol) but:
    Michael says to Charles “I’ve been here 15 years; you’ve been here-“ my mind always immediately fills in “15 minutes.” This, to me, seems the perfect means of expressing brevity, while also being verbally effective. IE it just sounds right!! Drives me batspit every time i watch this episode. (Unfortunately the actual line is “a day,” or some such nonsense my brain refuses to recall.)

    To Elba’s credit in what a great actor he is, I severely disliked him for awhile after this role, as this was my introduction to him at the time. I think to a lot of people, the issues wasn’t his seriousness, it was the fact that Michael is so childlike and even Toby understands this, which is why he deals with his behavior. Charles threatening him was like an adult threatening to beat up a kid so it brings out a natural protective reflex.

    I know that I am really late to the party, but I (especially as a non-american) I have a really high opinion of Michael's management. I believe that the office was the best is mostly because of him. The way he treats his employees as a family / friends, and treats them with laughter, fun, parties, aknowledgement (the dundies), etc etc, is such an important part of what makes this branch so succesfull. I honestly believe that without Michael, the people there would not have been such good friends, their mesh would not be as strong, even Jim and Pam would have probably not have gotten together without Michael's influence. In such stresful world we live in, it must have been such a relief and joy to have a workplace where the job pressure was not as much as it is at a normal workplace.
    Charles in my opinion is not a good manager. As far as I saw he is not interested in his employees, doesn't take the time to get to know them, doesn't adapt his style to his employees' personalities and expects a large group of people to adapt to his own style (which is a recipe for disaster - i would say most people who studied management would agree).
    In his first day on the job he starts to make so many changes it is crazy. And I am sorry but I am 100% with Michael on cancelling his 15th anniversary party on his first day on the job. Just because someone (who's name he learned 5 min ago) told him something about them spending hours planning parties (which may or may not be true) and made his conclusion in 5 min that the branch was designed for Michael's vanity (which is partly true even though I don't agree).
    And at the end with Wallace, people below me have already echoed what I think as well. That Wallace triviallised Michael's concerns, and put a band aid on a bullet hole.

Even though the branch was the most successful, there were examples of the branch bringing embarrassment (The Safety episode with Stanley’s heart attack and the Golden Ticket fiasco, for example). I actually have very different thoughts on this.
    The cold opening is one of my least favorite. I don't find it to be as funny as the usual Jim / Dwight cold openings. Jim isn't playing a smart prank on Dwight, as he usually is, he's just being annoying. And it also strays into that territory of - I understand that Michael is the source of much of the comedy, but he can't actually be so stupid as to think a 15-minte round of applause is a good idea.
    Secondly, the animosity between Jim and Charles seems forced. Like some other people have pointed out - Jim could just take off the jacket and bow tie and roll his sleeves. And it's hard for me to imagine that even a relationship that sets off on the wrong foot lioe this couldn't be put right.
    I will also admit some bias - the Michael Scott Paper Company arc is not my favorite, so that stsrting may play into my dislike of this episode.
    These points, along with the rain outside just give this episode a bleak undertone for me that I don't like.
    And regarding the ending - while it's a nice moment for Michael - it just seems weak to shake a man's hand and only then say 'I quit'. As if to suggest he's agreeing to it, where he's not. I think Michael should have said 'I quit' and then shake Wallace's hand, or just not shake it at all.

    another great field guide. Quick question for you Chris (or anyone.) Do you know why the episodes of The Office on Comedy Central have scenes that i have NEVER seen and seem to be bonus scenes? They air more content than Netflix ever had and even more content that's currently on Peacock, except for the Season 3 extended cut versions they offer. I'm wondering if thats what each episode is like if you purchase the season on dvd maybe?

    • @Mulverine
      @Mulverine  3 года назад +2

      I think the way it works is that the distribution owner gives the “final cut” of the episodes to the platform (Netflix, CC, DVDs, etc.). Over time things get trimmed or added to. The office had a lot of ‘deleted scenes’, but they’d also do things like ‘web exclusives’ (not to be confused with the webisodes) which would include content that was only available on the NBC site. So I think since the Netflix cut is the most consumed cut in history, it’s what I think a lot of us consider ‘canon’, so it’s weird when we see other scenes injected in. The most jarring for me so far was that episode with the microwave debate.

    • @jenjarrell9973
      @jenjarrell9973 3 года назад +1

      @@Mulverine That makes alot of sense, thank you. I think I've seen all of the scenes out there at some point but it still throws me when they put something extra in it. I watched Goodbye Michael on CC the other night and there were a couple added scenes that weren't entirely new to me but definitely not in the "easily available" episodes to us now. And yes, the microwave debate! It took me a while to find it after your field guide of that episode when I wanted to re-watch it on my own. Even if you google it and search for some scenes, they can be hard to dig up. I guess it keeps things fresh! :)

    This is the first time we see Jim take an authority figure seriously. So Jim is capable of caring about his job! He genuinely cares what Charles Miner think about him. For me, this is how a real boss-employee relationship should be and yet I am not sure what the commentary is on this relationship. The truth is no one respects Michael and he doesn't know why. That is what the entire conversation with Wallace is about.

      To be fair, I did really poor in school....Sorry Mrs. Brown. Copy pasted from other comment:
      If you count every minute of your life, it's roughly 19 years. But the song says 9,986,000 minutes working at Dunder Mifflin.
      9.986m minutes / 60 minutes = 166,433 hours
      166,433 hours / 40 hours = 4,161 work weeks
      4,161 work weeks / 52 weeks a year = 80 years
      Michael is immortal!

    Personally I don’t watch this part. I don’t like this part of the show at all. This is to me where the office starts to feel more like a sitcom and more from the foundation that made season 2-3 my all time favorite seasons of Television. It’s good, especially some part of the Michael Scott Paper Company. Plus I don’t like Charles. Like at all. Also ALSO I don’t like Dwights change from being “Michaels best friend” to just Michael being another obstacle in his very long journey to becoming Regional Manager. This is where The Office starts to drop for me it was prevalent from Season 5 so on but now it’s really becoming something less from what it was

    • @snowpoler
      @snowpoler 2 года назад +1

      Wanting to become the Regional Manager is what's driven Dwight since day 1, basically. He wasn't actually aiming to become this close to Michael by any chance, and definitely not in the beggining. What really happened to Dwight in the later seasons is that he became less of a suck-up.
      And it gives him more complexity in his character imo. Creating a limit as opposed to following his boss no matter what. Dwight just being a sidekick to a beloved character would have casted a huge shadow on him in the end, and at some point a lot of people would have just stopped caring about him, probably.
      Imo his clear obsession to reaching the top of the Scranton branch was worth exploring as it has been.
