I will die on that hill: In this case, Benny has no idea what he's talking about. Maybe the last ABBA moments in 1982 have colored his opinion of the song. But I think “Just Like That” could have been ABBA's last big hit. The saxophone version in particular perfectly captures the typical 80s vibe, paired with the familiar ABBA sound.

    • @Bruce-yv9tm
      @Bruce-yv9tm Месяц назад +3

I agree. Although I don’t agree that it fully had the typical ABBA sound. It feels like an ABBA song, but something is off. I suspect it’s the vocals, because only Agnetha is singing, both the melody and the harmonies. It also feels very melancholy to the point that I almost get uncomfortable listening to it. But that could be because I know it was one of ABBA’s last recordings.

@@Bruce-yv9tm I understand what you mean, because I also always had the feeling that the sound of the last ABBA recordings at that time felt somehow different. Be it “I Am The City”, “You Owe Me One” etc. The songs somehow felt colder. Even if some of them were good songs, the cheerfulness in them no longer seemed honestly cheerful.

@johnschlegel7309the song has full verses. They were just edited out for the ABBA undeleted melody. Just because the only versions out there are bad quality, doesn’t mean the verses weren’t finished. The song just had various overdubs and mixes (such as Na na na and the sax)

Amazing video as always Bobby's Brother!!!
I have loved Just Like That ever since I first heard it on the Thank You For The Music box set in 1994 but I respect Bjorn & Benny's decision to not release it in full. Still at least the song has been leaked on bootlegs and I think the best quality versions out there of the 3 versions of Just Like That are:
Slow version - Opus 10 bootleg CD
Na na na version - If It Wasn't For The Music bootleg CD
Sax version - Take A Chance On Us bootleg LP (this version is sped up on the LP but I have slowed it down for it to have the correct running time of 4:48 and have used noise reduction with Audacity software to clean it up as much as I can)
Also speaking of Carl Magnus Palm's book Abba on Record Carl reveals in the Tretow Tapes section that parts of Just Like That originated in an unreleased Abba song from September 1981 called I Believe In You where a section of the verses in it were later used in "Just Like That" (and I must admit/he has something that I miss) as well as part of the bridge also being used in the chorus (but I led him on/knowing that someday soon he'd be gone)
Also in the Voyage section Carl reveals that during 2019 an early version of Ode To Freedom was recorded along with possibly two or three more unfinished songs (one of which was Hit By A Train).

My first touch with JLT was in early/mid '90s after my ordering a bootleg CD via mail .It included the so called 'first most relaxed version".That was the first time i heard the original recording,...Listening to this I felt a grey cloud of nostalgia and personal 'pain' from Abba's 'loss' from my life that had taken place already almost a decade before. On one hand my inner world was mourning listening to this beautiful piece of music. On the other hand I couldn't believe, i had in my hands a piece of history hidden in a time capsule that my fave Swedish friends had left hidden somewhere not to be found soon.It also felt like me looking back, staring all alone at a once glorious palace , that then got silently abandoned without warning and got burried deep in obscurity. Finally VOYAGE was deffinately the catharctic missing part for the happy ending i needed.

I can follow Benny's thinking (5%) about "just like that", but that other 95% is as close to a hit as can be! As a songwriter and producer myself, I can assure you, that with the RIGHT production, "Just like that" could be an even bigger hit than "Don't shut me down" in this day and age. Maybe not with the saxophone or Na na na themes, those can sound a bit cheesy today, but done the RIGHT way, it can absolutely be done! :) If you set your mind and heart to it, it shouldn't be rocket science.

Just Like That is my favorite ABBA song too. After listening to some of the most beautiful songs ever like Dancing Queen and Chiquitita for as long as I can remember, encountering "Just Like That" for the first time (buried in a medley on a compilation on Spotify) was like being suddenly thrust into space. It was like stumbling into another reality, hearing a song that could have easily been just as successful in Dancing Queen's place. Thank God for the Thank You For The Music 1994 compilation.
The main reason I subscribed to this YT channel last year was because I figured he would cover "Just Like That" if it ever got released. Actually, I bought three of Carl Magnus Palm's book, including the one referenced in this video - yes because I love ABBA - but like 70% just so I could find out any more lore pertaining to "Just Like That" that's still missing from the internet.
I love the "NA NA" vocals and dreamy guitar in Version 2, and I love the thick bass, drumming, and reverb in Version 3. I immensely disagree with Bjorn/Benny for rejecting it, and I think that the verses and chorus fit quite well together. The most awkward part about the song is how the sax awkwardly lingers in Version 3 in some places, which could've easily been fixed. Despite the poor audio quality on all the bootlegs and rips, you can just tell (and hear based on the lone officially released chorus) it's a full and saturated recording. The lyrics are fine, but I am completely mesmerized by the dreamy ethereal sonic qualities it boasts that can only be found in ABBA's discography.
The song was eventually released with the band Gemini, but significantly pales, and not just because Agnetha and Frida are missing, but because of the less elaborate instrumentation and production.

Actually, I am one of those who just can't understand what Benny dislikes about it, and why they don't go and try find a final version which he likes too. Of course it is a matter of taste as always, but I personally don't understand why he considered "You Owe Me One" good enough to be released at least as a b-side, but "Just Like That" wasn't even good enough for that in his opinion. I think "Just Like That" is the far better song. On one hand, I like him following his inner guidelines, not to release something he is unhappy about. On the other hand it drives me nuts. And it would also drive me nuts if I was one of the other three. Why can't they convince him? Should we start a worldwide petition maybe?

But as Görel's press release of the summer of 1982 said: I Am The City and Just Like That were held over for a 1983 LP. You Owe Me One was only mixed because they needed a B-side for the Under Attack single. Naturally by 1983, ABBA were no more.

Thank you very much for your new format Sit and Chat! I really like it. It allows for more interaction😊.
What I would like to see with Just like that: a new version of the album Voyage 2.0 (or called Reloaded or Plus). A second CD could include the song Just like that and the two unreleased, unfinished songs. The sung version of Lottis Schlottis would also be possible. And a song by Abba was recorded in 1982 called something like Every good man. The melody was then used for the musical Chess. Do you know anything about the song Every good man? I also think that three or four songs by BAO are basically ABBA songs: Story of the heart, Bara, bara du, En dag i sänder, Mitt hjärta klappar för dig, They could also be put on a second side of the album as such.
That way you could release new songs, but you wouldn't have the pressure of another album and all the work behind it. But you could still give the fans something at the end. What do you think about that?

I personally think JLT & IATC would've been bigger chart successes than releasing 'The Day Before You Came' & then 'Under Attack' with its more ABBA uplifting commercial sound. They were tired, the boys wanted to move onto writing a musical. I am a big fan of “Gracias Por La Música” (1980) álbum, yet I hardly ever see it discussed anywhere. It would be interesting to find out more from those involved in the project, especially the procedure to get Frida and Agnetha‘s nearly perfect Spanish pronunciation. For example. Did someone use a microphone and audio phones to dictate pronunciation? Did they do it phonetically? Memorize each song? Swedish and Spanish are similar when pronouncing the vowels. Carl Magnus Palm didn’t get too deep into the info about this particular album.
The other subject is what is your opinion of the similarities between Giorgio Moroder’s “Underdog” (1972) and “Ring Ring” (1973). Worth discussing.

Imo JLT should have been reworked and driven to the Voyage album. There was place for both JLT and JAN.After all the concept of Voyage was " now and then combined" connecting past and present.I find JLT almost complete.Agnetha's 1982 vocals in it are piercingly fabulous,i wouldn't remove what was captivated in the recorded vesion at that point of time. The general sense from fans is that the majority adore this song.Yet B's +B's estimations are negative. But then i recall reading that Benny once wasn't even keen on releasing 'One Of Us" as a single in '81.SILOC was banned from the original Visitors" Lp,'Summer Night City" was also smth they also didn't think much of back in '78 and Bjorn(must have been) wasn't also keen on 'Angeleyes".Also 'Underattack" was a song they also didn't think much of but i numbly remember -i think Benny mentioned it was good , in a '21 interview.Sometimes they reconsider yet JLT seems to stand no chance.

Benny once stated in an interview, that by ABBA's release of JLT would mean it to be a cover-version of an already exisiting song. Something they never did. So also this should be considered when we discuss an official ABBA-version.

      @bobbysbrother137  Месяц назад +2

I was aware of that, but I don’t consider this statement of Benny to have any legit reasoning, as it is factually wrong in two ways. First, it wouldn’t be a cover version, it is the *original* version, and will always be that. Secondly, ABBA did this several times - taking a song back: in 1975 with “Bang-A-Boomerang”, first released by Svenne & Lotta actually as a “cover”, and even by Danish artist Ulla Pia in a version based on ABBA’s earliest arrangement, and in present times with “Just A Notion”, which was recorded in its full length version by tribute band Arrival in 1999.

    JUST LIKE THAT.
    4 MAY 1982 / EARLY ROUGH MIX :
First stage of production, consisting of the recording of the working basic backing-track with vocals, without overdubs. This mix is often mistakenly called the "slow version".
    17-19 MAY 1982 / EARLY ROUGH MIX + GUIDE-VOCAL OVERDUB :
This step consists of recording an additional vocal-track on the basic EARLY ROUGHT MIX recording. This is a guide-vocal overdub by Agnetha who guides saxophonist Raphael Ravenscroft (to indicate the parts where he should play). This mix is often mistakenly called the "na-na-na version".
    24-28 MAY 1982 / MASTER :
This final step consists of recording overdubs including Raphael Ravenscroft's saxophone. The mix is made on 28 may 1982. This mix is the Master. This mix is often mistakenly called the "saxophone version".

Benny is wrong about JLT. I think the last days of 1982 ABBA colours his judgement. Even releasing when the waves roll out to sea as an instrumental on Voyage would have been gorgeous! Back in 1990, I had 3 versions of Just Like That on cassette. When I went to Uni in 1993, I converted so many non-ABBA fans by playing that one song. Just Like That made people who said they hated ABBA actually appreciate them (funnily enough, it was the non-sa, non na-na-na version that was the most popular). I don't get how Benny cannot see this? After all, they released You Owe Me One, which is a much inferior song. It would definitely have been be their biggest hits.

I have been saying that for a long time too. I think those May 1982 sessions may have been some of the most tense between them and where they finally realised: This is it - it's not fun any more. And I think that clouds Benny's opinion indeed.

There is no ABBA song that divides opinion as much as Just Like That! Every time it crops up on any of the ABBA forums it starts off a very, shall we say, "robust" discussion! The fact that Agnetha, Frida and MB Tretow rate it so highly, obviously means something so I must be missing something because I always think it sounds very ordinary against so much of their catalogue. I don't think I've ever commented on it before as I don't want to upset the JLT fans but, you know what? it doesn't matter - if someone doesn't like something that you do like, it doesn't change anything - their dislike doesn't take away your appreciation or enjoyment.
By the way Bobby's Brother, CMP's 'ABBA On Record' is a must read! (I'm sure you know that already). I urge you to get a copy. The back story to their career, how the record companies around the world worked with ABBA, the important contribution from people who until now have just been names on record sleeves (like Rune Soderqvist for example) - all these stories are just too good to miss.

Among them was an "unmixed" version of Dancing Queen where the girls really take it to the next level with additional vocal layers & licks. And The Super Trouper outtakes actually include an "unmixed" version of The Winner Takes It All where Björn takes the lead from Agnetha at 4:23 of the nearly 5 minute recording!

I remember first finding JLT on a bootleg - Rarities & Demos I think. Before this I'd only heard the melody on a midi file in the 90:s. (Does anyone else remember that?).
I was surprised there were no sax - it was not until then I understood there were three versions. Another bootleg sent from another fan ❤️ fixed that (can't remember which title though).
Thankfully the full song can be found, but as we know the source is a badly dubbed tape several generations away. (But, there is a fan out there that have uploaded a great remaster 💯)
I'd never cared much for the Gemini versions - but loved the verses from JLT when they became a part of Chess in Swedish. I remember sitting next to Björn and Benny at the premiere and was the first he spoke to, and really lit up when I assured him of how good the lyrics were and so on. It must have been a very nervous evening for them both.
And, later on during a signing event for the CD I spoke to Per Myrberg (RIP) as his performance and especially the JLT version were the absolute highlight of the musical. And, I did mention a wish for the full JLT to Benny.
It's apparent he really has thought about JLT many times - so his decision seems final. (For now🙏).
(And when a friend asked Björn to release the full Burning my bridges, he laughed, saying "Ah. That old thing".).

Loving the videos. Please keep up the good work.
I have been a life long fan and Abba-nut since 1976- and love the detail you are putting into these docu-videos. I am still learning new stuff about Abba.
One thing I find strange is - Benny always said he was never happy with the original version of "Just Like That".
I love it- and similarly love the differing Gemini version- which has different tempo and lyrics. I find it strange that Benny doesn't like it - while he thinks the Voyage's "Just a Notion" is good. This is literally the weakest song on Voyage. It is not up to the standard of earlier Abba recordings or even the Voyage sessions. (Don't shut me down for saying this..lol) -
Even the vocals sound as if they are not up the the same Abba standards- it feels like a first attempt to record the song to be honest.
I reckon Benny is just being overly self-critical. Agnetha and Frida liked "Just Like That"- and I agree with the girls.
    Regards
    Andrew

I see comments, where people are pretty confident that just like that wouldve been some big hit, but ABBA’s chart performance was nothing to do with the quality of their songs at that point. I don’t know how old some fans are personally, but I just find a lot of younger fans always say things like this but they weren’t there at the time. Is easy to look back on a time period that you weren’t there and have rose tinted glasses, but They don’t realise how incredibly uncool it was like to ABBA in 1982. Specially in England. People would even get a beating. I remember being on the bus and a teenage lad around 13 had a ABBA scarf on and some kids stole it and after throwing it round the bus they throw it out of the window and give the kid some stick. The directors of the day before you came video even kept their involvement secret, as it was not considered good on the CV. The youth dominated the chart sales and most of us back then, wouldn’t be seen dead buying an abba single. Hence why their songs charted poorly in this period, because only mums and dads were buying them. I remember being a fan from the start after Waterloo and then hating them by 1981. Of course, as I’ve grown I realise how silly we all were but it was just part of growing up. I like abba again now of course.

All very interesting! I'm not sure if Just Like That is my favourite, but it definitely is associated with a period in time that we were all still yearning for more ABBA songs so I loved hearing it, even though it was first of all Gemini's version. That version sounds quite dead, too slow, and as someone else has said, they took out all the good things of their own recording sessions, it's a shame. But it doesn't make sense that Benny says that they were not happy with the final version, however they still released it for Gemini. So good enough for Gemini but not good enough for ABBA? All very strange. I agree with him that the verses don't match the chorus very well, there's something there that doesn't make a smooth progressive lead up to the chorus or a nanana part. But the saxophone has to be included. Thanks BB!

Very correct that the press release in mid 82 stated 2 tracks I Am The City & JLT. They were mentioned in the fan club run by "Sue" in UK.
The JLT on the 1994 4xCD actually had been remixed to "sound more of the 90s". I read that in the press release for the CD single released alongside of the 4x CD. Maybe they didn't release it because of the grammar. "Predestinated" is clumsy English, the correct use of the word would be "predestined".
Hit By A Train most likely will never be released considering Ted Gardestad met his end by throwing himself on to train tracks.
The re release of Live At Wembley probably went through because of parts of the 2014 release were distorted.

The result was one of their biggest US hits. JLT would have been a hit. It's so catchy a chorus. I think sometimes songwriters should listen a bit more to their audience and their recording staff. I get what Benny says about the verse - there are a couple of phrases that don't seem to quite 'flow' as well in the early part of the verse, but the second half connects well with the chorus. Most people only remember the hook of a song anyway, so will not care. BUT it's Benny's song so if he doesn't' want it released, it won't be.

Just Like That would have been a hit for sure, but I can see Benny's point when i listen to the unfortunately not in very good quality available demo from Elaine Paige for Chess of "When The Waves Roll Out To Sea". This song contains the original verses of Just Like That with a new chorus. Absolutely gorgeous song and for my taste the Just Like That verses match this chorus much better. I would love to see this version properly released and sung by a female lead. Eventually it only ended up as an awkward "old man grumpy version" on the Swedish language Chess release. Hardly recognizable in my opinion and the song lost a lot of it's charme. Very sad. The Gemini version of Just Like That for me is more coherent musically, but it lacks of passion and though Karen is a superb vocalist the song is somewhat cold and very 80's steril and distant. I do enjoy all the different version of Just Like That we do have access to, it's OK and enough for me. And I'm not sure if Agnetha would still approve those lyrics after the relationship she had with that fan who ended up stalking her. Concerning the two Voyage outtakes or leftovers. I guess "the singles the first fifty years" would have the logical release to put those two songs on, like the first album in 1982 contained two new songs... when I saw this chance passed i assumed it's never gonna happen. I don't have much merachandise either. Not my thing, besides... i have a lot of those little magnets with album and singles coversleeves. I like them on my pinboard in chronological order. Unfortunately most of them are not available anymore and not all singles were printed . I still own my original collection of ABBA posters, articles etc from the seventies. Never put them in the bin, even when i was a bit sidetracked from ABBA in 80's and early 90's. And the German covers..... uuuuuuuaaaah. Don't like them. Sorry. Even english ones very seldomly are intersting to me. But I do love some mixes available on youtube, like Matt's Mixes. i love to hear them on long car rides... Good night or good morning from BN/B

Benny's take on 'Just Like That' is quiet irritating. Most fans know the melody from 'Just Like That' has passed through many works since ABBA recorded it. Personally, Its finnished. Benny has stated more than once JLT's verses and chorus dont fit together but, there are ABBA releases out there that he feels the same about ('Should I Laugh Or Cry' for one). I would agree Gemini's verse lyrics are stronger than ABBA's and the added bridge gives the track another strength but, for me, the Gemini vocals don't match the ABBA vocals. It has a nice summery flavour with the late Raphael Ravenscroft saxophone playing. It would be a nice nod in memorium to him. 'Funky Feet' was apparently abandoned because it sounded too much like Dancing Queen. The only thing I see in comon with the two tracks is the lyrics both being about dancing. It actually reminds me much more of a cross between of Mungo Jerrys 'In The Summertime' and The Mixtures 'Pushbike Song' for some reason. As for the unreleased Voyage tracks, maybe if we get an Anthology release, instead of the countless re~releases of what we already have, something else might surface. Having listened to the latest BAO album, there are songs there which would have been perfect for Agnetha and Frida. At the time Voyage was released the ladies both seemed definate in not wanting to be part of any publicity but neither ruled out singing for ABBA again. Sadly, as time moves on, it seems less and less likely this will ever happen.

Agnetha: "i think it is a very good song and recording and I hope it's going to be released one day." So do I. As much as I respect B&B, in this case they are totally wrong. Just Like That is so much better than Just A Notion.

I’m totally in agreement with Benny - glad they never included Just Like That on any album. The song feels disjointed and not of the supreme standard of songs chosen for their albums.

I agree with Benny and Björn: the verse and chorus don't go together. But the chorus is great and, in any case, it's a damn sight better than Under Attack!

The Gemini version of just like that was far more complete and better produced than the ABBA version even though Benny and Bjorn produced the Gemini version.

I didn't like it. I much prefered ABBAs' unfinished versions. Agnetha's and Frida's vocals are way better.
