  • No, you did not misread that.. Doug from D&E is here today to tell you why JEEP ARE UNRELIABLE... I am also going to tell you why that sentence is outlandishly misleading AND why it is a GOOD THING there are so many unreliable Jeeps on the road.
From the way we lift and maintain our Jeeps, the people we sell our lifted Jeeps to.. down to the Jeep 4.0L's need for zinc in its oil! There are a million different factory contributing to the general condition of disrepair and unreliability of most Jeeps out on the road today.
To throw a total curve ball into this conversation.. after I convince you that Jeeps are unreliable, I aim to convince you that it is a good thing! Think I can do it? Tune in to find out...
For this video we are primarily speaking about the YJ and TJ Wrangler, XJ Cherokee, and ZJ and WJ Grand Cherokee, though this can - to some extent apply to everything from the KJ Liberty and WK Grand Cherokee up to the Jeep rolling off the line today

Recently, I purchased a Rubicon and was again shocked at how well it rides. It’s my daily driver, I don’t abuse it but it’s nicely decked out (lift, fox shocks, reservoirs, big tires, tube doors, warn winch, steel bumpers, etc.) it rides gently and can easily stay at highway speeds (proper gearing) and..my wife doesn’t like it (so I must be doing something right!).

I honestly love watching these talks. I learn more and more about Jeeps then I think I have on any other channel. I've been driving the same Jeep (xj 1998) all through high school but I've just recently been getting into Jeeping a little bit more, wanting to know how to maintain my beloved vehicle a little bit more so it'll last another 250,000 miles. I honestly didn't know about the oil that's definitely a good thing to note. And I did suffer from death wobble last year, but that's my own fault for neglecting to replace any bushings in the drivetrain. I know not everybody likes these types of talks. I honestly really like these they're almost like a podcast I'm not a big fan of podcasts but I do seem to really like these little talks that you have every once in awhile and I definitely like if you do more of these, but you keep up the good work.

My dad started buying Jeep Wranglers in 1991 for running about a 170 mile per day rural mail route that was about 85% gravel, in North Dakota. He generally moved them along somewhere after 200k miles, and despite running them very hard in all sorts of weather he never really had major driveline breakdowns (a couple driveshaft u-joints). You're 100% right about the modification thing. If you're looking at something that's stock and been reasonably well maintained, they last a long time. If it's somebody's eternal project, it'll be your eternal project. I've been driving 99 TJ for years and have zero worries about it breaking down on me or acting weird on the road.

Not really. More like they all keep modding and adding so many accessories and so many don't have a clue what they're doing so they try anyway. I can speak from experience having owned a MINI Cooper. The brand is reliable if you STOP modding and messing around with the car! I didn't do any mods on my car and it lasted 60,000 miles easily. I only sold it because the local VW dealer was having a fire sale on GTIs and the salesperson AND his boss were hellbent on separating me from my MINI. They kept dropping the price until I finally caved! Well, it's much better quality than the MINI and has easily racked up 35,000 miles without any mechanical issues...

Keep solid axles front and rear with optional selectable lockers; take a page out of Matt Winder's playbook (From the Matt's Off Road Recovery RUclips channel) and make the rear coil-sprung to match the front; high clearance; good approach, departure and break over angles; true low range transfer case; and an engine worthy of being the 4 liter's successor.

I picked up a 2004 GC Limited from an auction on a whim and it was pretty badly neglected. I bought a cheap battery, threw it in, and drove it 35 miles home and it didn't miss a beat. After getting it home and inspecting it more thoroughly, I see that just about everything that _can_ leak, was in fact leaking. Rear diff (even had the factory rear diff plug!), trans pan, oil pan, valve covers, front main seal (somehow, the rear main seems fine). It has 148k miles and I decided I really liked it, particularly the interior. Cosmetically, it was fantastic. It has the dark slate interior, leather seats, and it's painted that black pearl color. Every part I've taken off and replaced, with exception to the intake air temp sensor, was the factory original part. 17 years and it's running that well? Given the amount of neglect, I'm amazed I got it home and it speaks to what this guy is saying and how much abuse they will really take. I'm doing a lot of work to it, getting it back in shape. It has the 4.7, and in watching this video, I wanted to make a side note about this motor.
The 4.7 gets a bad rap as finnicky or needy, etc. but the truth is, it was engineered to much tighter tolerances than the 4.0L. Tighter tolerances means it can't go as long between service/adjustment and it needs to be looked after. If you do, it will last 200-300k miles no sweat from what I've seen. This is in line with what this guy is saying, take care of it and it will take care of you.

My mechanic is Performance Auto in Show Low, AZ. He's a Jeep specialist and fanatic -- as is his entire staff, all of whom are over-qualified, but they are loyal to Toby.
I've had my 2001 Cherokee Sport since August 31, 2013 -- 8 years -- and I've had to have my front drive-line rebuilt several times because of the mud. You see, I live down 4 miles of dirt road and I drive it almost every day. But I haven't had death-wobble and my engine is still going strong, although recently, I did have to replace my serpentine belt.
Toby turned it into a rock-crawler before I bought it -- I have all the receipts from the previous owner -- and he must've done it right. That's what it takes to last more than 2 years on my road.
You're right about the 4L engine taking a lot of abuse/neglect and continuing to run. I do regular oil changes and I use a synthetic blend oil from Quaker State. I've driven it long enough that the tiniest noise or change in the sound or the engine gets my attention. I've needed no major repairs or maintenance on the engine.
Still, I'm 68 years old, female, live alone -- and I wouldn't be without my Jeep. I was thinking about replacing it with a new Wrangler Willys, but after watching this video, I'm thinking not. I'll just get my 2001 4L Cherokee Sport fixed, maybe replace the seats, get new shocks and springs, check the sway-bars, get some bushwhackers (fenders), and give him a paint-job. POOF! New Jeep! I'll have to rent a car while all of this is being done, but I know I'll be glad to have my Jeep back when it's over. You can't beat it with a stick.

Had lost of issues and spent so far over 6k fixing issues that previous owners had neglected (cat converters, deadly wobble, failed heat core, bad grounding..) the beauty though, all things considered, relatively affordable to repair, bear in mind I drive a BMW, half of the time I don’t even understand what the problems are with it and cost an arm and a leg keeping it running. I was surprised a $400 ebay lift and a soccer mom suv was more reliable on dirt than a Jeep that was built for it. I’ve had a 1993 XJ sport since 2012. It had 118,000 miles on it at the time.
The ONLY repairs I’ve had to do was fix a bad clutch slave cylinder (mine was last years they used the accordion style that sits inside the bell housing on shaft directly), the clutch master cylinder, one of the Chrysler quick-connects on clutch line, and the radiator (plastic hose inlet went brittle and broke. ). Everything else has been maintenance. It’s now at 208,000 miles and still going strong.
The only complaint I really have is that due to age, a lot of the torx bolts/screws and some bolts/nuts have rusted badly, and sometimes had to be cut off.
I’ve added a lot of luxury items from Laredo and country cherokees to mine and they have been drop in replacements (my Sport had most of the wiring already for overhead console).

Great video analysis! I love my '93 XJ. 246K miles. 1st two owners took care of her, garaged her, service her and I've got the records. Third owner didn't know squat and kept putting a "quart or two" when the "oil level gauge went to 0". All it took was an $8 driveway fix for the filter adapter and she stopped leaking. Did an in-chassis disassembly to inspect everything and the only problem I found was carbon build-up in the piston ring lands (cleaned them out) and the rod and main bearings showing the expected wear for oil starvation. Reassembled it after installing new crank and rod bearings and a new oil pump and haven't looked back. I'd take her anywhere. Thanks AMC for building the greatest engine you could have ever done! 5 million of them over a 20 year run with about 2 million in XJ's can't be wrong.

We go done bashing in the UAE every weekend. I've been driving a Toyota FJ cruiser for 2 years. I've bought it used and it was used for a year dune bashing before I've bought it. I've only replaced a handful of minor components. A friend sent this message yesterday about his Jeep: In just 1 year:
    2 front drive shafts replaced
    Tyres balance every 3 months
Head gasket burned with oil in water system overheating the engine
    A/C valve stuck
Oil cooler broken so I almost burned my car

He said, Pathfinder, blazer, tacoma, explorers.... And likely what he is saying is true when measuring up to those rigs. But he never said anything about Land Cruiser. Everything is unreliable next to a Land Cruiser. I know more Land Cruisers with well over 500k miles than I know all other makes combined (excluding diesel) with over 250K miles. Land Cruiser is the most reliable and capable vehicle in the world. Jeep is just popular in the USA. There is a reason why Toyota holds it's value. Everyone knows you can't kill a Toyota. Not saying Jeep is bad just hard not to point out the good in Toyota.

I bought my 2003 TJ from a nice old couple that told me they took care of it and not one thing was wrong with there 100% stock jeep.
Well here is everything that was ignored by them and i had to replace.
    Transmission
    Clutch
    Water pump
    Idler
    Restricter blower motor
    All 4 O2 sensors
    Entire exhaust system
    Every u joint
    Every bushing
    Track bar
    All 8 control arms
    Drag link
    Tie rod
    Steering stabilizer
    Rear flex brake line
    All 4 brakes
    Tune up
All vacuum lines under the hood
    Battery
    Starter
    Clutch safety kill switch
That was to make it drivable 🤣
Then i did upgrades as well
    SYE
    CV drive shaft
    4" lift
Re gear to 4.10s for the 33s
The engine run great no issues at all with that, but now with all the work and money i put into it, its reliable and runs top notch.

I bought an 08 jk back in 2017. It had a 2.5" lift and MT wheels, seemed pretty cool to me. We had a mechanic look at it and he told me it was a "full suspension lift." I knew jack about cars then. It ended up having a budget boost, only the springs and shocks were lifted. I'm upgrading as parts break, like sway bar end links, driveshafts, track bars + brackets, and I have adjustable control arms in the back, now I need them for the front. Budget boosting puts so much more stress on stock components and I'm finding out the hard way. Hopefully all I need now are those front control arms and an aluminum steering set up, but probably ball joints too. Not to mention the oil and coolant my 3.8 goes through. But damn do I love the thing

My 96 ZJ had 232k on it when I sold it, only because the viscous coupler in the transfer case was shot, and at that time I had no Idea I could swap in a different transfer case and not have to spend the large chunk of change to get the viscous coupler replaced. That thing is still being daily driven by its current owner 9 years after I sold it.
My current 98 ZJ has 161k on it, no issues other than regular maintenance here and there....4L I6, selec-trac and rear limited slip. My 96 ZJ didn't have limited slip, and was full time 4WD but dang I was surprised where that thing would go, the 4L I6 is my go-to engine....the 5.2L and 5.9L would be great too but when you find them they're usually completely trashed for some reason, at least in my area. I'd like to get into a WJ at some point though....not that they're much more advanced than the ZJ's, but they're a bit newer and some better components on them. I guess the trouble is finding one that isn't beat to crap here in Idaho that tends to be the case, I don't get why people just trash their vehicles.

While that makes me feel confident that I can easily get parts for it, and there's more room in the engine bay than you would expect, it does make me nervous. I noticed though if I change the oil earlier than I think I need to (they recommend 5-10k miles with some synthetics but I still stick with the 3kmi/3month rule), it runs a lot smoother. At least they moved the alternator to the front where you can get to it. The transmission is that part I know will suck. It has so many damn gears it doesn't know what to do with itself sometimes. I won't replace it when it dies. I'll probably stick in something that's not supposed to go into it with a kit from Novak (hopefully they'll have one by that time), and maybe while I'm at it do a ridiculous engine swap.

All fluids new (coolant, power steering, both diffs, brake fluid, transfer case; trans fluid 10k miles ago).. Rotors + pads; sanded and lubed the slider pins.. Fuel filter; starter; spark plugs. All suspension is new (shocks, sway bar links, track bar, upper & lower control arms front and rear, all 4 tie rod ends). Did everything myself but the alignment during the past year. Takes a lot of time and work but she drives like a dream and it was money well spent; gained lots of tools and experience and didn't make some other guy rich from working on my car. Your right in 100% of what you said, but your 100% wrong in your original question. The reason Jeep has a bad name is because of the crap motors They had in the 2000’s... the 4.0 was replaced by a 3.7 in the Grands and a 3.8 mini van motor in the Wranglers.... The 318/360’s were replaced by the 4.7... Add to that the Chrysler’s transmission issues of that same time and you end up with a bad rep. Follow that up with Patriot and Compass and second gen Libertys and you get a rep for bad cars. I’m talking Main Stream units.
Also while we are talking about compass and Patriot, drive by your local BHPH lot and you will see a front line full of them. Cheap credit cars are not going to be maintained and will give the brand a bad name.

Ive got a 95 XJ 4.0 AW4 Np242. Its OBD1. Best thing you can do with the OBD1 is learn the key trick to read codes, or with OBD2, have an ELM reader. A full swap out of quality sensors is a good idea for reliability. TPS, CPS, CAM, MAP to start. This will keep the 4.0 reliable, along with new plugs, wires, cap/rotor and coil. Keep a spare PCM under the back seat, as these are getting old and can blow caps/traces. Look for an oil with zinc, or put in a zinc additive. Make sure your cooling system is flushed and in good condition. A ZJ clutch fan can really help a weak cooling system.

Around 272,000 miles the rear brake calipers, both, failed after ignoring the problem for a long period of time. I replaced the rotors & the pads as well, the alternator had failed just recently which was expensive to replace other than that the car has been rock solid.

QUESTION: I have no lift. I opened up the wheel wells maybe 2in on eather side when I put in my fender flairs in. I also put some bigger tires on it to get off the ground some more. Is there something I should look into to keep it in good shape?

I love my '06 LJ, 2 door unlimited, and I'm very happy with the 4.0. Shortly after I bought it about 10 years ago, several people kept asking if I was going to lift it. I said, Uh, why and no. The main reason I was told is that it looks cool. Not a good reason. It's great on the beaches, I have better control in snow and ice, I don't get stuck in the mud and it's fun on fire roads. It also flat tows perfectly behind the motorhome. There's plenty of room in the engine compartment and I can actually work on it. It's not completely infested the computers. I'm also a bit over 50 and I don't want a vehicle that I need a stepladder to get into. 🤣

I've beat the shit out of my 91 XJ and it's sitting close to 600k miles. It's sitting waiting for new suspension, it's dealt with a lot of abuse. And I daily drove it with crap maintenance. Constantly had to tighten up bolts or the front axle would slip sideways around corners..... I love it, but it's problems were caused by a crappy lift pre installed.

Thanks for all the good info, with having watched this do you think I should beef up everything even though I'm only going with a 3" lift and eventually 35's. ( 2018 JK, last year )

I have a lifted 2014 and have fixed the front suspension, replaced engine rockers and rear suspension.
Even with all of the issues, I am a Jeeper for life! I off road it every other weekend! I have never been broken down on the trail or on the highway! Use them for what they are made for...off road! You either like them or you don’t! Nice video!

I hear what you're saying to a degree but come on man.
Here in Australia people do all these same stupid lifts and mods and offroad thrashing of Toyota Landcruisers, Hilux's, Nissan Patrols.... and they do not start breaking like Jeeps do.
The "softroading", suburban Jeeps like the Rubicon, Grand Cherokee.... they are garbage. Sorry, but no excuses man, come on. Even in bone stock form they will leave you walking and leave you working. Even if they never go offroad, younger than 10 years. People aren't stupid, and the reputation is well, well earned.

I daily my 92 YJ. It sits on a 4 1/2 inch lift with 35 inch tires. I will admit as you say my lift is incomplete. No such thing as a "complete" kit. My Rubicon Express kit had everything you need to lift the Jeep but not to absolute completion. Unless that package comes with a Slip Yoke eliminator, stronger tie rods/ ball joints and a pair of D44s it's never "complete". I do have the SYE but I sit on 35s on a Dana 35 with 3.07 gearing. When money starts falling out the sky I'll complete my lift. But I have no intentions of selling, so the next guy doesn't have to worry about my unreliable YJ. The same YJ that starts everytime not plugged in 40 below centipede weather. Same one that got me out of a 5 ft deep ditch filled with snow. 👌

Well said sir. I needed to hear that wisdom. Glad I went the mild/moderate route with my ZJ setup. Do you think the zinc principle applies to the 318 as well?

I bought a ZJ with 300k and yea I understand everything you are saying. Luckily the guy I bought it from kept it bone stock but he wasn’t putting the right oil in it so I did have to rebuild the engine and now I use Lucas classic car oil that has a ton of zinc. But as much attention as I put in it I still neglect things like steering components and bushings. I know they need fixing but it just takes the abuse so I keep putting it off.

Hey I just recently purchased a 1998 Cherokee 4.0, 5 speed that I daily. I got a 3 inch lift on it and 30 inch tires, and i'm replacing my track bar with an adjustable one for my lift height, what do you recommend for steering upgrades? Thanks

The reason XJ's are increasing in value is because if you have a rust free unit, then everything else can be handled fairly easily and fairly inexpensive compared to other platforms. For 5k u can build an XJ as capable as a 50k rig...just my 2cents

For all my JEEP BROTHERS across the pond, I've been running Australia made PENRITE OIL in my 2003 4.7l JGC for many many years.. It has a zinc additive pack and I believe it is why my BEAST is as tight as it was when it came off the line... It's driven like it's stolen on the daily and it's stinking hot here most days too so if you can i recommend trying to get some sent to you.. 🤘

@@DEInTheGarage yeah Bro, Penrite HPR 5-5w40 is a full synthetic and the equivalent to 0w30 but with friction modifiers + zinc.. they do a Ten Tenths racing oil also which is the top of the range and even the standard 5w30 full synthetic has the additive pack.. Best oils available to mankind in my opinion

I bought a 2014 Rube with 12k miles, fully lifted and 35's. I immediately took it out and checked out the drive train through some pretty narly terrain. It worked great. Then I went to Norther Georgia and Northern Tennessee for some decent trail busting. Again, flawless. However, during my drive to N. TN I experienced the death wobble and electrical issues. The death wobble was fixed by replacing the entry level lift with a BDS which I had professionally installed. The electrical issue has come down to (I think) to issues with the Totally Integrated Power Management Module (TIPM) witch seems to be rather common place. I'm in the process of replacing the TIPM. We'll see.

100% when I lifted my WJ 3 inches i made sure to use a good lift. IRO 3 inch foundation. Also I made sure to replace all the control arms, the tie rods and all the suspension and steering stuff. It rides pretty good. Taken it 80mph with no death wobble, only thing left is to upgrade the front driveshaft to the u joints since mine started making noise. Good thing I dont really use 4x4 here. Also got a squeaking noise from the back when rolling. I think it's the rear axle but that's been there before the lift

My co-worker has a 2014 Wrangler and the Jeep mechanic tells him he needs to fix something unexpected, every time he gets an oil change. My best friend has a 2020 TrailHawk and it’s been in the shop 3 times in 3 months.

Would you happen to know what’s the best tire size for off roading for a 2020 Jeep Renegade ? I was told by many it would be a 225/65/17 but after I install those tire sizes, would I need to do any suspension work on the Jeep ? Like I wanna start off by adding those tires first then move on slowly to the rest
