I love Jax some other pluses: 1) you’re 5 hours from Charleston, 5 hours to Tampa, 5 hours to atlanta, 5 hours to Miami 2) the natural beauty is stunning … drive over the jtb bridge over the icw and gawk at the amazing vista of the estuary or take a jet ski or small boat to the gtm preserve. There are 7 bridges you can cross and how can the water below you not put a smile on your face 3) it’s still reasonably affordable in comparison to south east florida 4) it’s growing like crazy (now the 10 most populous city in the US) and with it the amenities, restaurants, recreational activities are blowing up 5) health care is world class …. Go to the Mayo Clinic and see how they treat you and what they’re able to do
I grew up in Jacksonville but finally moved down to the Tampa Bay Area when i was 30. I personally never liked Jacksonville, but it depends on what you want. If you are looking to live in “Florida” then Jacksonville is definitely not for you. This city is not really considered Florida by the rest of the state Orlando and down. It gets colder up there and the beaches are kind of gross. There’s no tropical feel and you won’t see the tropical types of palm trees that you see in the rest of the state. The winters are too cold for them to survive. The beaches have dirty looking brown sand and discolored water versus the rest of the state that has blue and teal colored water with cleaner white sand. Most Floridians view it as more southern Georgia than Florida. This city is also pretty conservative and still in the Bible Belt with churches on every corner. If that’s what you’re looking for, then cheers. I was surely glad to move to an area that’s not saturated with religion and churches. The downtown is pretty dead and has always been so, so you don’t ever get a “city” feel. The rest of the town is suburban sprawl with copies of the same chain restaurants and stores and lacking a lot of character. The only areas with any culture and diversity are Riverside and San Marco. Other than that it’s mainly just a spread out southern town in the Bible Belt. I never liked it, but to each their own. If you’re looking to live in “Florida” then i would consider Orlando or further south.
As a European living in Jacksonville I can tell that I really don't love it, but there is worse. I live in Avondale, thank God. At least I feel like home. You forgot to give the reason why the water of the ocean here is so dark. Besides the Saint Johns River flowing into the ocean, this is also a large military base, with a large traffic of ships. Plus the morphology of the bottom itself, it's darker. It's not like the Florida Keys nor the Panhandle
I moved from CA two years ago and never regretted. I love the beaches, the small town feeling of the big city. I love people of different ages and backgrounds. If you are in your 20s go to Miami. Otherwise JAX is a greate town.

As a native there is a lot of truth to what she says. She mentioned the schools but did not include Duval County which is the biggest county. Public schools are rough here. Traffic is not bad here compared to other big cities and pretty much only during rush hour. It is a great sports town where you can find a team and a sport and places to practice and play. I love it here. The cons….i can’t say here.
The humidity in summer is overwhelming, the beach area is not really developed, there really is no "downtown" shopping and entertainment area so no concentration of great restaurants, bars, clubs or shopping, like Florida and the rest of the south, pay is about 1/3 of what you can earn elsewhere so although it there are lots of jobs you are hard pressed to find a good wage. Jacksonville really is just a conglomeration of small towns grouped together to make a big city.

Jacksonville is certainly not a horrible city, but it is lacking compared to other large cities. We do have parks, but compared to other cities, the parks are somewhat lacking in terms of size, walkable paths, and bike paths. Florida in general is lacking in a variety of trees, bushes, and plants compared to other areas of the U.S. when it comes to our forests. Expect a lot of pine trees and oak trees. Large cities usually have bad traffic problems and Jacksonville is no exception, but compared to other large cities, it is probably not nearly as bad yet. There are still large parts of the day you can drive and it not feel like rush hour. In terms of schools, it sort of depends on where you live to how nice the school will be.
I agree, it probably will have a much different vibe than San Francisco. There are a lot of differences between the two places, but plenty of great reasons to move here!
Although they call it an international airport, flights from Jacksonville are not direct to cities outside of the US. That's a big negative for anyone who likes to travel. And these indirect flights are crazy expensive!

Would not worry about the alligators its not really a problem. I would look at St Johns County, since the schools are better, and less crime. Jacksonville Schools are bad, plan on private schools if you move into Duval County. If work location is not an issue I would look at Martin county which is the Stuart Fl area.
You don't really have to worry especially about alligators, but even with snakes, in residential areas they are usually non-poisonous and rare to see. You don't really see them in parks either but if you go out into the forest, you can run into snakes, even the poisonous ones. There are certainly gators around, but they are generally a rare find. In terms of raising a family of 4, plenty of people raise their families here. Jacksonville is certainly not the best place to live, but it's not the worst either. The schools are not necessarily the best but some schools are much better than other schools and it usually depends on your location in Jacksonville. Better, wealthier neighborhoods, generally have the better schools. There are job opportunities, but Florida's economy is usually cheaper than other states so the pay is often less than other states. Jacksonville is one of the cheaper economies in the state, thus usually has lower pay than other cities in Florida. That is not always the case, just generally the case. Traffic is certainly horrible at certain times of day, but in terms of big cities, it could be a lot worse. Atlanta Georgia and Denver Colorado come to mind. How much one likes Jacksonville is certainly subjective. I've lived here on and off since the 60's, where family is the main thing that keeps me here, but I also am not a fan of cold weather. I've done a lot of traveling, possibly through all of the states except Alaska and every place seems to have its pros and cons where the wife and I are considering an RV when we retire simply to move from place to place at will. We love theme parks and are about 2.5 hours from Orlando. We also love cruises, where Jacksonville does have a single ship to cruise to the bahamas on and Port Canaveral is about 2 hours away from many different cruises.
Yes if you speak to a Jacksonville Police Officer they'll tell you the Gang problem is the worst in the State. Jacksonville is about 30% Black population so its has lots of gang activity and crime.
I'm from CT. I've been in Jax for 7 years now. I honestly don't like it here. It's kinda backwards, lower income, less educated and the summers are awful. High obesity rates. Winter is chilly. The downtown is depressing. And the deforestation and rampant building of cheap luxury apartments is disgusting. Most schools are not good. There are too many bad neighborhoods. There are plenty of worse places to live of course.

Nassau County is not considered Jacksonville. She doesn't mention Duval County Schools which is the County Jacksonville is In! Why? Because the school system in Jacksonville Sucks. The Airport is nice but it's not centrally located, it's on the most North End of town. Downtown Jacksonville is terrible and there's nothing going on there, except empty buildings and crime. The Beach is ok but the water is not clear, Destin beaches are way nicer than Jacksonville Beaches. So disappointing that the Jacksonville Beach area is full of thugs at night. Not sure where all these parks she referring to are. But the traffic is not bad at all. The weather is not as bad as she described, except its cold at times in the winter. She also fails to mention the crime, which is one of the worst in the State, mainly due to our population demographics. Jacksonville has been the murder capital of Florida for many years, not sure if we still own that title. I seen similar videos of other cities, now I know not to believe them...
As far as schools go the video was slightly misleading. While it’s true that St. Johns, Nassau and Clay Counties do have good public schools, Jacksonville itself DOES NOT!!! Jacksonville is not in St. Johns, Nassau or Clay Counties. Jacksonville is located in Duval County which has some of the worst public schools in the entire State.

Went last week the traffic is horrible and rain all day in the afternoon. The beach is amazing.

It's getting to be a Blue city now. Joe Biden won in Jacksonville, and they elected a Liberal Democrat Mayor last year.
It's not as scenic or happening as SFO. Less entertainment and everything is spread out. It's the Bakersfield of Florida.
