That's a really good point. The more I read about this business it sounds like you need to move your machines at the drop of hat (new ownership, theft, poor revenue producer). Makes alot of sense to build inventory of machines that are super easy to move. I think this gives me the idea to just focus on small lightweight machines. Also most people don't have empty garage to store those monster beverage machines.
i just randomly found this video - - im impressed you two gave it an honest shot. most people out there never do so and it's ever just a conversation. you two will be just fine
Surprisingly enough I have been looking into and researching vending machines hear the past few year. And the other day after my college professor had us take a test, vending machine operator was one of the carriers listed. And it actually stated some of the points you made here.
WOAH NO WAY!! Yeah the vending machine business is fascinating, and an interesting form of passive income for sure. I wish it was less intense of a business to get off the ground considering the heavy machinery, inventory expense, and repairs
From what I gathered, once they realized the amount of work they would have to put in to maintain their vending machine, they lost interest because it didn't meet their passive income and time expectations.
tough question, it depends on the location! snack machines tend to be cheaper and easier for beginners since there is no refrigeration mechanism to learn. but drink machines seem to have more demand and less concerned about expired products. if I could do it again, I would go with a drink vending machine!
Well, It would be Great to place a drink Vending Machine beside Snack Machine or the opposite but It would be Drink Vending Machine, I means It didn't need to be Cool Drink but It would be more demand if Its Cool or Warm depend on the Location Average Weather... ¯\_( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)_/¯
Very true! Life (especially your 20s) is all about discovering what business/career field will fit you best. I agree about the location comment, finding good spots is tough when the big vending machine operators have them all under contract. The best bet is to find new buildings or office break rooms or even barbershops.
The information coming from this video is from a first time entrepreneur, vending machine business is absolutely scalable and passive. No business requires ZERO work, you just need the right systems in place. Business sounds great to everybody until they see what it takes to actually run it successfully and then they make a video like this somewhat scaring people from the business model. Take the lessons learned and keep growing with the business, don’t just sell off.
Well said! Agreed that vending machines can be lucrative and passive (eventually.) But I think the principles of both opportunity cost and pivoting are importing to emphasize. For our specific situation, the machine, location, and profits were not worth the continued effort. Similar results can be achieved through similar business models like real estate investing and digital media. There's also countless other side hustles that perhaps are more enjoyable for similar amount of income (examples could be petsitting on Rover, event directing, or even flipping on FB marketplace.) I think vending machines can be an excellent hustle, this video is simply to share the insights we learned and mistakes we made. The biggest mistakes being buying a dinosaur machine, bad location, no credit card reader, and 1 hr travel distance from our machine. But the lessons learned from having an equipment-based machine were incredible.
This is a good video but success in the vending business revolves around your locations. And it doesn't necessarily take a lot of startup capital. I would buy a bulk number of machines and sell a couple to make my money back and place the rest for free that way I'm out of the hole immediately.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video!! Passive income is so fascinating to me, and vending machines is just the tip of the iceberg. Can't wait for you to see everything that is to come.
Great video, talks about challenges, I do feel like no source of passive income is truly passive, you need to maintain it, you need to market it, you need to improve it, and there does need to be a lot of initial investment (money, time, effort) into it. The main attraction is that they are less hands on and more flexible than a full time job. If you have had a different experience with different passive income sources, please do share. I love your positivity about the whole experience and the fact that you shared all the realities of it, and kudos to you for doing your first business while still in college. My first business was bookmarks lol.
I guess my biggest question would be what do i need to be legally compliant with my vending machine business? Surley it cant be as simple as purchasing a machine and putting it in a location. Im sure there is some sort of legal entity or license/permit required, it may even vary by state, but how do i go about finding all of that out?
I live in a very heavy tourist area so I was looking into starting a vending machine business so this was something really good to watch and learn from!
Glad to see a video listing the cons. As there are a bunch on RUclips that only promote how great the vending machine business is... And they make it sound easy.
Im gonna be honest. I used to work the vending machine at my church with my father. These guys kind of exaggerated a little bit. Our vending machine was so old and it rarely malfunctioned. And I think the issue they ran into was placement, because at our church it had a good amount of traffic and that was only one day out of the week depending on the day.
Definitely! Location was our biggest challenge! But I will say that repairing the mechanics of these machines without a background in vending repairs in harder than one might expect haha
I appreciate your honesty through out this video, not a video just showing success and and skipping out on the reality of starring businesses! Thank you!
First advice that I as a former vend route owner is get into the field first to get first hand experience in the business also take a adult education class about starting your own business also get an LLC find out about sales tax state and local get an accountant! Never buy into a company that will sell you a machine and a location they are more about selling the machines than caring about you and the machine and location!
On my 34 th year. I had a 3 prong attack. Office coffee service, ( provide many products for office kitchens...coffee, utensils, cups, towels...) soft drink and snack machines. Warehouses with at least 50 people minimum. And straight delivery of products... cases of soda, specialty orders( just make sure you get that 38% profit. Ha few construction accounts for high tech , put 10 machines 6 soft drink and 4 snack machines for a project that was supposed to last a little over a year.(1200 workers 7 days a week)emptied every day) took about 2.5 hours to refill, but it lasted 5 years and that was just one account. Had about 60 machines out at max, now just a nice part time gig with about 8-10 accounts mixed. I outlasted most of my accounts. Tip: have someone else sell for you and give bonus and small 5 year commission on account profits.. 10% worked for me
there's a lot of good info out there! But the truth is it is much harder than it seems on the surface, not impossible, but definitely comes with headaches.
After doing all my research cause am looking to have my vending machine business up and running soon. I think the hardest part pulling up solo vs a franchise is cutting the right deal with the location management. I have an ideal location but getting the right person on the phone to propose my pitch is hard and cutting some kind of contract deal. Because base on where u place those machine it’s using up the electricity so someone is going to want their cut.
Typically the owner of the location will be given a 10% - 15% commission on net sales (sale price of snack/drink - the cost of snacks.) Some negotiate for 20% but I find that a bit high. That amount of commission could make sense though if it’s a good location with large amount of traffic.
Yeah I'd agree with your assessment -- it's above average for a hustle, but there is definitely drawbacks in terms of the amount of active work involved to run a vending machine business. I remember watching Reyes' videos on it and just thinking, man, you are hustling for a couple bucks...
Cool videos I have respect for you guys for being honest! And thank you for your information if you can I would like to hear more about your other business journey reach out to me . Because I’m going to try the vending machines with my 15 year old son to teach himself how to be independent. And you guys seem to be humble!
I have been thinking of getting one and two too put here an there and I did not think about the traffic and where to put them and do you own a two or three head m&m an so on candy ones .
It depends on what you agreement you come to with the owner! It’s usual to give a 10% - 20% commission on monthly sales to the landlord/company. But I’ve heard that some places will let you put a machine in with no commission, just because they want their customers to have more access to snacks/drinks!

I’ll rate a 4.8, expectations didn’t happen, but it was for the first time I assume so it’s a great learning experience
definitely!
Thanks for being honest and sharing your tips. It’s great to try new things. And it’s cool to see that you shared even though it didn’t go how you expected. All the best!
So glad that you enjoyed the video and the tips! I agree, even when things don't go how we expect, we can learn take away many lessons and applicable knowledge for future business ventures :)
This is why I go with bulk vending candy machines and spiral gumball machines. Those are much closer to passive, and far easier to move at will.
I’ve always wanted to start a bulk vending machine business!
thanks for being so honest and blunt great insight
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! :)
im 11 years old and can possibly buy my own vending machne in a year and im starting to learn
You are awesome 👍
As much as a passive income business sounds great, I just want to have no boss. I also want the rewarding feeling of running a business.
5:36
I feel the slight pain in that smile. That feeling of "Whoa! That was close to a disaster," and having learned from mistakes.
i just randomly found this video - - im impressed you two gave it an honest shot. most people out there never do so and it's ever just a conversation. you two will be just fine
You've said that it's all up to the location, so why not simply relocate the machine?
Exactly
that’s what i’m wondering too?
From what I gathered, once they realized the amount of work they would have to put in to maintain their vending machine, they lost interest because it didn't meet their passive income and time expectations.
Would you rather have a drink vending machine or snack machine? I feel like drinks would make more sense because they don’t really expire
tough question, it depends on the location! snack machines tend to be cheaper and easier for beginners since there is no refrigeration mechanism to learn. but drink machines seem to have more demand and less concerned about expired products. if I could do it again, I would go with a drink vending machine!
I was told drinks always out preform snacks
I feel like you dont learn without mistakes so this is a great try. I also think its hard to find locations since its fairly easy to start up.
You can’t say nothing to that Chris. You got owned. You just quit.
This is a good video but success in the vending business revolves around your locations. And it doesn't necessarily take a lot of startup capital. I would buy a bulk number of machines and sell a couple to make my money back and place the rest for free that way I'm out of the hole immediately.
Definitely never considered vending machines as an income source! Super informative and interesting video! Glad I stumbled upon your channel
Really
I'm glad you enjoyed the video!! Passive income is so fascinating to me, and vending machines is just the tip of the iceberg. Can't wait for you to see everything that is to come.
Been researching this topic. Thanks for the info, Ezra Miller
Search on the Department of Revenue website in your state
I live in a very heavy tourist area so I was looking into starting a vending machine business so this was something really good to watch and learn from!
A heavy tourist area is PERFECT for a vending machine business! I would recommend starting with a drink machine!
0:05 “have you ever wondered what it’s like to start a passive income business?”
3:46 “this is not a passive income business”
LOL
Right
Recently been looking into vending machines myself. i appreciate the tips ! thank you!
take it from a guy who profited about 20 bucks total...working really hard
good job chris
haha you win some and you lose some! 😂
Do you need a business license or LLC for this? How often do you go and collect the profit?
@@ChrisDAndrealifestyledesign were your machines newer models or used?
@@casandrayoung9728 the one bought was used! we got it for $450
Vending machine at a church?
@@iamdoktah yeah they’re really solid locations from what I’ve seen.
I appreciate your honesty through out this video, not a video just showing success and and skipping out on the reality of starring businesses! Thank you!
I appreciate that! Glad you enjoyed it :)
Restocking, cleaning the machine ain't hard labour though. Don't even have to do it that often twice a week probably.
Exactly still seems way better than a regular job
Broski i fucking appreciate this honest and Informative video u made... thanks for the honesty dude...
I'm so glad you found it helpful! All the best my dude!
Thanks this was really helpful 💜
Enjoyed the honesty of this vid.
I'm so glad! We definitely learned a lot through our experience.
Thank you, bru for being transparent, incredibly honest I appreciate it ❤❤❤❤❤
First advice that I as a former vend route owner is get into the field first to get first hand experience in the business also take a adult education class about starting your own business also get an LLC find out about sales tax state and local get an accountant!
Never buy into a company that will sell you a machine and a location they are more about selling the machines than caring about you and the machine and location!
Yup its all about location. We just had a few arcades open up here and I'm feeling those are gonna be good spots to plant some
What steps would I take to get a vending machine put in the mall
I want to have my own vending machine hopefully this is start for me
An honest video, thank you.
Sad RUclips currently tends to promote the catchy mostly bs.
So true! But I am glad that you enjoyed the video and got value from it :)
Thanks so much. I am venturing it . I'm ordering my machine on Alibaba. Thanks for the advice ❤
10% worked for me
If you happen to see this, you mind sharing what your monthly/yearly profits were like? Thanks!
It is passive income. How long does it really take to restock, and clean a machine? 2 hours on a Saturday morning?
after a year of work, you guys made $20?? damn cuz
Wait what 😳
and a valuable experience PLUS free snacks :)
😂😂😂 once you guys figured you had the wrong machine why not switch it out for a drink machine
You never fail until you quit… YALL should have kept going!!
This video basically shows you to do your research and not be lazy 🤦🏽♂️
Probably the first honest video I’ve seen on vending machine business
there's a lot of good info out there! But the truth is it is much harder than it seems on the surface, not impossible, but definitely comes with headaches.
Personally, I think that you should start with a gumball machine and then eventually build up to snack/drink machines.
Thats good advice!
Do people even still use gumball machines 💀😂
@@Player500-1 no hate here but tbh 💀
@@Player500-1 my kid does everytime we pass one
When you add a credit card reader, the credit card processors can charge upwards of of 5% or more of each sale
I believe in you!!! And usually 10% - 20% of sales for the store owner is standard
No stupid questions: How would you pay the owner? Do you pay them with cash or through Zelle or some kind of payment system?
@@GaryCapital A little late but a cheque works just fine and a little more professional.
Thank you for your honesty!! Headed to the next video
Thanks for watching!
I've been doing vending for 11 years now the best machines that hardly ever break down are the Castaloria's 101 S series very good machines 👍 👍
Thanks!
There should be a video about "best" units.
Best comment. Thank you 👍🏽
Why nobody says if the have to pay the place's owner where the put the vending machine
Typically the owner of the location will be given a 10% - 15% commission on net sales (sale price of snack/drink - the cost of snacks.) Some negotiate for 20% but I find that a bit high. That amount of commission could make sense though if it’s a good location with large amount of traffic.
Hi I have a question. Do you offer any incentives to anyone who allows you to place a machine at their business? Or do they charge you a fee? Etc
You create an agreement with the business. Some take 10-15% or a flat fee
There should be an app monitor your vending machine to see if its good or bad green all time red when something goes wrong
Yeah I'd agree with your assessment -- it's above average for a hustle, but there is definitely drawbacks in terms of the amount of active work involved to run a vending machine business. I remember watching Reyes' videos on it and just thinking, man, you are hustling for a couple bucks...
Reyes is a loser that guy always complaining. Nothing he does works
Cool videos I have respect for you guys for being honest! And thank you for your information if you can I would like to hear more about your other business journey reach out to me . Because I’m going to try the vending machines with my 15 year old son to teach himself how to be independent. And you guys seem to be humble!
I bet a snack machine in a dispensary would do good business lol
LOL IT PROBABLY WOULD
I got an opportunity to buy 2 combo setups that dispense snack and drinks at an airport should I buy?
Would you recommend purchasing vending machines with the routes already including?
the start up costs would be higher, but you would also be more guaranteed to make income right away. if you can find a good deal, I say go for it!
Greetings from Gainesville Florida!! Thought I recognized those chairs you're sitting in
If you can invest in a card reader you'll make alot more money. I personally rarely carry cash anymore but if I see a card reader I may buy a drink.
I have been thinking of getting one and two too put here an there and I did not think about the traffic and where to put them and do you own a two or three head m&m an so on candy ones .
Do I have to pay for where I am placing it? Example putting it in an apartment building? Or it depends on the landlord/company?
It depends on what you agreement you come to with the owner! It’s usual to give a 10% - 20% commission on monthly sales to the landlord/company. But I’ve heard that some places will let you put a machine in with no commission, just because they want their customers to have more access to snacks/drinks!
what about using machine vending with a scan qr code for payment
I came here to learn how to trade after listening to a guy on radio talk about the importance of investing and how he made $460,000 in 4 months from $160k. Somehow this video has helped shed more light on some things, but I'm confused, I'm a newbie and I'm open to ideas
I start with $2,500 at May 15 and I'm almost at $21k now! all thanks to Patricia
Congratulations that is a real success story in my opinion. Success because you didnt allow the amount to determine whether or not you would jump in. Good job. See you at the 100k meet and greet.
I'm at 1.25k now!
Do you sell high and buy low ? Or do you hold? I need tips
@Graham Stephan How do you research to know which one to buy. I'm a beginner and still trying to figure this out.
I love this! so transparent. Now I know that it won't be as easy as it seems. Thank You !!
Thanks for the insight bro - really great content!
I’m glad you enjoyed it bro!
After watching this video in full, it doesn't seem as though it would be worth my time. Thanks for sharing!
Chris I don;t know how to do this with out "using" your video but I have great offers on used vending machines and it seems like some of your viewers might be interested in that.. I'd be happy if we can arrange a way to supply them! All the best
Go for it! There's a lot of comments of people looking for a used vending machine, so you can absolutely feel free to go and respond to them for potential leads!

I really apreciate your honesty guys! Not another ,,be a milionaire via vending machine business" type of video.
Iam sure it can work, but as everything - It aint easy and you need to like the work you put in.
Do you have to pay the business and other public locations for pacing the vending machine there ?
Yes
@@BAU111 hi, did you pay set amount or % of profits? If %, what’s a good range?
Yo I appreciate the honesty! Good things to think about
I'd like to start a business doing this but what do you recommend when trying to set it a location ? How would you approach the clients to interest them in allowing us to put out vending machine there
How about selling, supplying or exporting vending machines?
Does the location take a percentage out of your profits ?
yes i want to know as well
It does unfortunately! It ranges from 7% - 25% but it's negotiable
How do you handle commissions or do you not pay them?
This is a win for a business loss. I love it
HAHA we really learned a lot! I still think it has potential as a side hustle, but definitely time and labor heavy
Best overall advice before buying a vending machine I learned a lot about It within just watching this video great video guys!! Keep up the good work
