      How long have you been studing the tarot? Curious because it's like you don't stop learning it's a constant process in finding meaning that comes within enterally. Been studying since my teens but recently i've been really digging into myself in finding what they mean without the research and i find that this is where you actually learn from experience or not use what the author felt that the meaning feels right for, but you will find that your meaning and theirs will be similar and close but not the absolute same if you're in tune with your deck...

      @@KateyFlowers Nice..Would you know of an earlier deck before the Ryder Waite decks by chance? The reason I ask is because when i was younger my grandmother gave me a deck but they were missing cards or something because the deck didn't have 78 cards like the newer styles not unless there wasn't that many to start with and that it only came with 58 cards...But the deck I have never known the name of them and i've never seen them online but the backing was solid black with a thin Golden outlay on backing with a small like seal design in the middle of the cards for the color but more of a dark green tint but that could be just from fading but they all were like this and i was never able to ask her where they came from or who made them..If it helps they were given to me in the late 80's...

    I personally wanna see more “dark” oracle and tarot decks. Decks that are blunt and honest, it’s nice to pull a card and have it say “ don’t worry dear everything’s all sunshine and rainbows” but sometimes I want a deck to call me out and say “ get over it, pick yourself up your not weak so go punch something”.

    I didn't share it in your post seeking them, but I think my 'unpopular opinion' (and everyone who knows me knows it) is... tarot books *need* bibliographies. Unless you're writing a personal memoir of your journey with tarot or something, chances are you've been informed by other books / videos / blogs / sites / whatever in how you understand the cards, what you know of their history, reading techniques, etc. Credit where credit's due.

    • @KateyFlowers
      @KateyFlowers  4 года назад +5

      Honestly bibliographies are not things I really worried all that much about before... I liked when a book had one but I wasn’t too worried if it didn’t... but I definitely have shifted a lot since our book club and you and Cara in particular teaching me so much about the ethical importance of a bibliography, rather than it just being a purely practical thing! So thank you!

      Such a good point. If I was writing a book I wouldn't know what ideas were mine and what came from someone else any more so I couldn't footnote specifics, but I could certainly include a bibliography of the books I'd read at the end, and you're right, it should be the norm.

    Personally, I don't think every deck should or needs to include every identity or sexuality. I think it's ok to have decks created for specific groups of people. But I do think we need more decks catered towards those under represented groups. The big issue is that many creators either feel intimidated or afraid of creating such decks because they either have no experience with that group or because they're afraid of making a mistake. The best people to create decks catered to specific groups of people would be people from those groups because I think it's the inly way to have accurate representation.

    LOVED this video. It was so great to hear different perspectives on all these issues. ;) On the matter of antihuals, I think I was the first person to start making anti-hauls about tarot/oracle deck purchases so I have an admittedly strong opinion. lol. With that said, my experience has been that a lot of my subscribers actually BUY The decks I antihaul because what doesn't resonate with me DOES resonate with them and my antihauls actually highlight these decks even though I'm not purchasing them, myself. I keep my anti-hauls respectful of the creators and have always encouraged others to do the same -- sure, sometimes there is critique about a deck but usually i'm not buying because I have something that I feel fills that 'niche' in my collection already. :D I totally agree with your feelings about content creation not being about promoting other people's stuff. Also I really agree that men/masculine presenting folk are very much under-represented in decks, particularly decks that focus on self-love and self-worth, which frustrates me because i know so many struggle in these areas... and while we've made some progress with body shape/size diversity (a very teensy tiny bit) in decks, I find that MOST Of the time masculine presenting folk are representing, they tend to be represented in a body-beautiful way, which - again - frustrating. YES the question is everything when it comes to getting an understandable reading/result. (omg longest commentttt)

    How about *learning* from decks in which you do not necessarily see yourself represented? I can relate to some of the images/descriptions in the Pride Tarot, for example, and I've learned from others. I think "diversity" in decks serves the purpose of "humanizing the other", as you say, and what I really value is gaining a new perspective. Diversity in decks should be genuine, not forced. Like when you see a carefully measured number of whatever in a deck, that's more offensive to me than having no diversity at all. There are many reasons to love the This Might Hurt tarot, for example, and one of the first things that struck me was how the creator speaks of this or that card image/meaning as being inspired by someone she knows. *That;s* genuine!

    • @KateyFlowers
      @KateyFlowers  4 года назад +9

      I totally agree that ticking boxes for the sake of it is not what we mean when we talk about representation. That's also part of what I meant when I added in the comment about representation that is fetishised, tokenistic, etc being not good enough. And sure, let's learn from all different kinds of representations... but given the current levels of diversity in tarot, that would require some groups to carry a whole lot of that 'learning' burden but white/cishet people not to do much at all!

    I absolutely love second hand decks and books. If there is a note card in them or something written on a page even better. I will never understand why people complain about things on channels such as not liking anti hauls or not liking reviews or whatever.... OMG just watch a different channel. RUclips is like a TV, if you don't like a show then change the channel. More diversity in tarot/oracle is a must. I think if anything good can be said for 2020 so far is that there were more produced diverse decks than I've ever personally seen. I'm tired of decks that have women's boobs out. Sure it can represent self empowerment but I rarely see that actually achieved IMO and instead it just comes across negatively to me. We don't have to be naked to be powerful or beautiful or to be taken seriously, etc... Great video, enjoyed it.

  • @SunsetBoughTarot
    @SunsetBoughTarot 4 года назад +21

    Awesome video! This was so interesting. The thoughts on diversity were fascinating in particular...I always find it very telling when as soon as there is a move away from overwhelmingly white cishet male representation in any art form there suddenly becomes an impression that white cishet males can no longer relate to the art, when people who aren’t white cishet males have had to find ways to relate to art that doesn’t represent them for the entirety of history! But yes, totally agree that representations of healthy masculinity are still lacking and needed everywhere! Thanks so much also for the comments on anti-hauls, especially how the idea that saying you’re not going to buy a deck “harms the creator.” You’re so right that it implies that the entire function of Tarottube is to market decks for people! And that idea I think is really bothersome, especially considering that SO much of Tarottube IS in fact unboxings and first impressions and other forms of free marketing (often done by people who have paid for those decks with their own money rather than being given them for review or anything like that). To take issue with a couple of people saying “yeah I’m not interested in this one because xyz” seems like a huge overreaction. And as far as this idea that you need to experience something in person before you can make a decision about it, not only are you totally right that we all have to make consumption decisions based on marketing all day every day, but tarot decks in particular are primarily a visual medium and it’s pretty easy to get a look at the art without owning it! I have a bit more sympathy for people who are bothered by a book being anti-hauled based on the cover....buuuut if I can watch fifty unboxings and flip throughs of a tarot deck and see all the art before buying, then my opinion on whether I want to buy that deck is pretty dang educated in comparison! Anyway, sorry for the novel length comment but I really enjoyed this video and loved how all the opinions were expressed in such a respectful way.

      This particular stigma is definitely cultural, if you come from a culture (like me) where "black magic" or "evil spirits" are a thing you're always told to be wary of second hand stuff from people who you don't personally know is a big no in general (even picking up trinkets from the streets) because you don't know the mindset of the previous owner and even if they did not intend to harm anyone with that object their negativity could still be passed on to you.
      As opposed to the current renaming of "second hand" as "pre loved" which assumes the previous owner was a perfect loving guardian of an object they're now allowing you to have it.
      Personally I'm still wary of were I draw the line between the two mindsets because sometimes second hand is the only way to get something I really want

    I loved this so much! I loved the discussion and seeing how everyone f elt. Diversity in opinions is just as important as diversity of age, culture, race, sexuality, etc to me. I have two follow up thoughts:
    On affirmation decks: I started out with a more negative view on oracle and affirmation decks but as I grew and matured my opinions changed. For one thing, I have found that people who are drawn to affirmation decks tend to be people who haven't been affirmed in real life or haven't believed the affirmations. And being affirmed and confident is in a lot ways an essential door to personal transformation and spiritual growth. If you are trying to grow as a person, but don't believe in your self worth or if you are trying to make your life better but don't truly believe you deserve better, your efforts to grow are doomed before they begin. If you are trying to learn to deal with tower moments but don't truly think things can get better or that you have the power to change them, you are will drown in shadows before you can reach for the light. I have also found that people who are in difficult situations like depression, grief, chronic pain, etc look for affirmations deck because they are aware of just how many shadows the world can hold and they need the balance and reminder to look on the bright side.
    On predictive readings: I have always had premonitions and when I do weekly or daily readings, a decent amount of them become predictive. A lot of people I know in the community who do week, month or year ahead readings have had at least a few readings turn out to be predictive even if they didn't intend them too. It's something that just happens sometimes. I agree there are a lot of philosophical underpinnings to the subject but the bottom line is you can rhapsodize about the moon or a tree and it's place in the universe but that doesn't change the fact that it exists. And the same for predictive readings. Thanks as always for a lovely discussion and sorry for the novelesque response.

    Thank you, Katy for the awesome discussion! I have a new RUclips channel that is so far, just unboxing and a look at my deck collection. I’m only just over a year into my study of the Tarot and other metaphysical studies, and found those videos extremely useful to me as a newbie who is searching for something to resonate with after experiencing years of religious trauma (Mormonism). I started the channel to be something fun for me to do and to provide a service for people who were considering certain decks to purchase, with a good view of the cards. My channel is small and nothing fancy. I found your channel and some others that really helped me find some decks that I resonated with and because of good “unboxing” videos, I have made very few dud purchases. I would like to discuss other topics like, religious trauma, the sudden invisibility of women over 50, and other things I’ve got stewing in my brain, but because of fear, I’ve yet to show myself on camera. People can be very cruel and it’s not something I think I’m strong enough to brush off if something really nasty were to show up on my channel. Soooo...I keep it really safe. Another thing about diversity...the depiction of people o er 50 is very minimal. I understand that youthful beauty and energy is a powerful force to be reckoned with, but in the grand scheme of things, that is a very short period of one’s lifetime. It goes by exceedingly fast and span of one’s lifetime when they are regulated into the non-relevant invisibility chamber, is a longer chunk of life. Anyway, thank you for the discussion. I love your perspective!

    I completely agree with you about the topic of representation. A diverse deck is meant for people who don't "fit the norm" in some way to be able to actually see themselves in at least one deck. And sure, maybe people who aren't part of the minorities represented in that deck will feel like it's not for them, and that's fine. But pointing it out like it's a bad thing does sound a bit entitled and it clearly comes from a place of privilege (although I can see that maybe it wasn't said with a bad intention). Because if you look at 100 decks and feel upset you aren't represented in 1 of them, think about how people who look at 100 decks and aren't represented in 99 of them feel (spoilers: usually not very cheerful).
    Also, and this is just my opinion, I actually feel more connected to a deck if some of the cards represent minorities I'm not a part of, mainly because I feel like they more accurately represent the world around me. The world isn't just cishet white thin able-bodied people, nor do I want it to be. Diversity is beautiful.
    Also, thank you Katey for being inclusive of trans people, I highly appreciate it!

I watch almost everything at 2x speed. And live videos are the absolute worst. (Oh! forgot to add: many of the stretch goals on Kickstarter decks actually make the deck *less* attractive to me.)

    Agree with so much of what you said. I'm new to the cards. My first oracle was bought in February and my second&third oracle + first tarot deck just came in yesterday. But I've been lurking in Tarot-Tube for a while. I just wanted to be *absolutely sure* about the decks I was buying before putting my money down (yet still managed to whimsey-buy the tarot deck when I didn't want to have to learn tarot in the first place), so...
    I especially agree about diversity. I'm tossing around ideas about making my own oracle deck with symbology and terminology and imagery that works for where I am right now in a way that most decks I have access to really, really don't. Like, most healing and self-care decks I've seen so far seem to be body-beautiful at best and a lot seem to worship the womb/motherhood/childbirth as a form of "connecting with the sacred feminine". For someone who is non-binary, wants to work with feminine and masculine (and neither, and both) energy, but never wants children and has endometriosis (so my uterus is a constant source of recurring trauma for me), the current decks on the market are mostly a no-go.
    Most of the decks I've been attracted to also don't cover the gamut of psychological states I want to explore (during shadow work or self-care for mental health) which is aI've
    About anti-hauls, I love them. And reading the comments section will show that they often *don't* negatively affect the sales margin because so many people will say that they are considering buying a deck in an anti-haul because the aspect of it that landed it in the anti category for the RUclipsr are the exact aspects they, the commentator, were *looking* for in a deck. I dunno, I really like the way it can go both ways here: (1) "hey, I agree with you, this isn't my jam and I'm taking it off my wish list" - and (2) "wow, that deck you didn't like because of x, y, z is *exactly* what I've been looking for, thanks for sharing!" Also, the anti-haul can really be a starting point for being more mindful of mindless consumerism personally and starting that conversation in the community, which is good in and of itself.

    Regarding redrawing for a given question: I say Yes! I am a beginner, and I notice that some of the cards that come out or jump off of my deck while shuffling can answer a line of thought that I followed rather than say focussed on my question, or related to what was happening in the room, etc. Sometimes, I'm just not concentrated enough. So although it is not an officially accepted way of practicing, I believe we shouldn't push ourselves beyond what we are capable of. Accept what we are, do, and not be judgemental about our practices, as long as they are authentic and done with integrity. Plus, when a card doesn't ring a bell to me, when at the end of the day it didn't get related with anything that happened, I just discard it. Full stop. Thank you for answering that point brought up by that YTer. Tough one!

    I love anti-hauls! And I may decide from an anti-haul that I LIKE the deck for the exact reason that someone else doesn't like it. When I go to Amazon, I love to read the low reviews of books and other items. I can tell if someone is giving a bad review because they have an ax to grind, or if they dislike the premise or they dislike it for reasons opposite to what I am looking for, or if they are pointing out genuine quality issues. So I think that negative reviews are important and helpful. and it doesn't mean because someone says "I don't like this," that I will just take that an decide not to like it either.

    I agree with being overwhelmed by unboxings, first impressions, and pick a card readings, but they are "easier" than sharing knowledge on the tarot, which can also be very polarizing or vulnerable AND not that interesting to people who aren't looking to become a specific type of reader. As someone who learns best by watching others, pick a card readings really helped me when I first started out in tarot. Being able to watch people who were more familiar with tarot than I was talk about the meaning of the cards and the ways that they could relate to aspects of everyday life really helped me learn how to connect the meanings to the question I was reading on. It also really helped me find a method of reading that worked for me since every reader does their reading a little bit differently, so I didn't feel as much pressure to use methods that didn't work for me (like 'only read using celtic cross' or 'only read using past, present, future') that get recommended a lot in resources for beginners.
    That being said, it feels like they focus on only a couple of really limited topics and, personally, I don't really need or want a romance or career reading. I don't really know if people find that they get useful advice from pick a card readings, but I think they can be a really helpful tool for people who are just starting out.

    I loved this video Katey, thanks for sharing! 🥰 I was completely agreeing with so many of your opinions.
    I wanted to add my own unpopular (?) opinion on the topic of diversity, which is that most decks that do currently depict diverse abilities do so by "matching a disability to a card" or using a diverse ability to convey meaning, which just feels gross and stereotypical. For example, wheelchair users are often depicted as a King of Swords type intellectual figure. Or someone with a diverse ability is pictured on Strength because "all people with disabilities have to be strong" (not saying this isn't sometimes true, but generalizations like this can come across as condescending). I dont believe deck creators have these intentions but it still makes me uncomfortable when I see it. Just my 2 cents!! Sorry for the length of the comment :p

    • @KateyFlowers
      @KateyFlowers  4 года назад +2

      Yes yes yes! I think this falls into the tokenism problem. It reduces the representation to such a two dimensional thing that is often more offensive than omission. Disability rep I think suffers the worst from this and it's really disappointing. The Strength card in particular reminds me of Stella Young and her TedTalk about the dehumanisation and often condescension that happens when we frame disabled people as inspirations. We need to do better! Thank you for sharing.

  • @frostedsilver
    @frostedsilver 4 года назад +2

    My (apparently unpopular?) opinion is that I really like pick-a-card reading videos. They're part of what got me so interested in tarot in the first place, because they were almost always quite accurate.
    I am also in the camp that doesn't find divination necessarily unethical at all - I think it depends how you approach divination, and also how you talk to your querants. I see a reading as one possible future, and I remind people that the future is malleable, and so if you don't like your reading, you can change how things go. Actually, I think that's pretty empowering. Once you know about what might happen in the future, you can change it. (I've also personally done this after readings for myself - changed my own future, I mean. Sometimes not necessarily for the better, but we're human and we make mistakes.)
    I also make sure to have the best intentions for people - my ultimate goal, when I get ready for readings, is to help them. On the other hand, I understand that this is sometimes uncomfortable for people, and that cards can sometimes be really confronting, or the querants will hear things they don't want to hear, etc. As a reader, I see part of my role as helping to break this to a person gently, and making sure they know they have options, etc. I don't want to leave people worse off than they were when they started the reading, so I guess I do as much as I can to "cushion the fall". I see this as the difference between tact and blunt honesty. They are both TRUE, but one feels a lot less bad than the other, and doesn't get a person's defenses up nearly as much.
    Annnd apparently I've written a novel. Oh well. XD

    Just found this. Loved it. My unpopular opinion would be that I am tired of seeing pregnant women depicted as being creative. Hello! SO many more ways of a woman being creative, thank you. Agreed, in part, with the last opinion you tackled. As a Wiccan, it disturbs me that more and more tarot is going mainstream and called a "game." When I do tarot, I am channeling gods, ancestors, guides (though perhaps that is the Medium in me, as well as the Witch, who knows?). I do agree with you on reversals (I may try them someday, but right now, I don't wish to). I am big on Ancestor decks, and also...I do love Oracle cards. There is just something about them that appeals to me. The biggest unpopular opinion I think I have is that...the Rider Waite Smith deck does nothing for me. Big snooze. Boredom city! I do get that it is a great "starter deck", but it is just so bland and one-note. Had to laugh at the outrage of so many decks being all women. Enter a time machine and become a child of the 1960's, when everything was about men. Sorry, don't care. Well...enough rambling...except to say that I would love to see someone like myself reflected in a tarot card, but I don't know how you would depict a bisexual ASD (Aspie, which apparently you can't say anymore) witch. LOL Thanks so much for this, and I am so glad I found your channel!

      I have to admit, I really struggle with that idea... the anima and animus aren't literal, scientific things, they are constructs, ways for us to talk about and think about things. That's the same with gender. A man and a woman is one, obvious and simple way of depicting that, but it's not the only way.

    I think flip-throughs are excellent to have access to. Sometimes I see a deck being discussed by practitoners that sounds great ...but unless I can see what all the cards in it look like, I'm taking quite a risk acquiring it blind. I have bought (then got rid of) more decks than I've ever used, because it turned out I just didn't like the cards when I actually got hold of them. Nobody has to watch flip-throughs if they don't want to, but I am quite grateful for their existence!
    It is good when the unboxing is done quickly, though. I'm not keen on watching somebody take 10 minutes to open a box and lift the cards out! I just want to see what the cards look like, with a bit of information about what else is included when you buy them. But many of these RUclips unveilings makes too much of a meal of the process.

    Oh man, I recognize myself in the last one, but with runes. 😂 Granted, for me it's more... I'm not sure you can understand them deeply if you haven't spent a lot of time at the ends of the world?
    How Issa is more than just ice and structure - It's eight months of darkness, carefully walking over a lake, painstakingly making sure you don't waste neither time nor resources in winter. Or the pure joy and elation in the sun rune Sunna, when the ice finally melts.
    But I'm also aware it's quite gatekeeping of me. So I'm thinking about it a lot, to figure out why I feel this way and how to change my perspective. And I've realized it has a lot to do with Nazis appropriating the runes...

      @@aquamarine18 That is an interesting insight regarding pathworking meditation. What do you feel about borders that are too wide? Do you trim them? I definitely agree that we need more room to engage in dialogue with one another rather than boxing off challenging conversations as a no go!

    Loved your thoughts on these Katey - especially about diversity and the anti-haul thing! 👏 not as important or interesting as many of these topics but I think my unpopular opinion is that I don't love matte decks SOOOOO much more than glossy decks like a lot of people seem to. I understand the opinion especially with the glare you get on some glossy decks but the matte decks I have I actually find to be so much harder to shuffle that the slightly slippier ones! 😂 Xx

    My unpopular opinion is that I think there are a lot of people trying to legitimize and make tarot "respectable" and they have a lot of "rules" and ethical ideals that are very modern and goody-goody. Tarot has a rich history that includes being a tool of people who are often considered to be "low lifes" by the more respectable quarter. I feel like there is a move to "gentrify' tarot that kind of takes it away from the people who have a real historical inheritance to it. Also, by moving away from that, we are also placing that same judgement on those people. I also dislike the whole "tarot isn't the seedy, mysterious, blablabla thing that made you interested in tarot in the first place, let me reeducate you on how it's all about jungian archetypes and how it's blablabla...." I mean, I think most people get interested in tarot because of the representations they see that a lot of modern tarot readers all seem to want to disavow. I feel like cleaning it up too much makes it bland and boring. I prefer that tarot stay on the fringe and not just be some mainstream thing that has no... flavor. if that makes sense. I really really think people try to hard to gentrify it and rationalize it and so forth.

    I loved the post on this! I found myself reading and soaking it all up... It seemed so brave that some put forth their opinions, you don't see that a lot on YT. When I started my channel, I wanted it to be a space where I could share my (maybe) unpopular opinions ... teaching, experiences, learning together...😋 And being a space for DIALOGUE... Much love to you Katey 💞.

    People that need to redraw are just trying to get to a deeper channels. Reading some shallow cards clears the way and helps you get there.

    Interesting to hear so many different takes on so many different aspects of tarot! I also love how you are so respectful of everyone's opinions and you inspire me to try harder. :P
    I've just thought of one of my tarot opinions: I can't stand when decks put Strength as 11 and Justice as 8! However I do respect that that's just how some people do it. It just drives me nuts personally. :P

    • @KateyFlowers
      @KateyFlowers  4 года назад

      Haha I'm always working on it, too, don't you worry! :P And I definitely prefer Strength as 8 and Justice as 11, too, mostly because that is what I'm used to, but I get why some people prefer reverting to the original order. I think decks that just don't number the majors are a great work around for this!

    I didn't know about the Naked Heart Tarot. That's beautiful. I love the Wild Unknown butttttt I don't really think of it as an "animal deck." To me, I think of an animal deck as one where the deck is mainly about the "meaning" of the animal itself, and I don't see or read the wild unknown that way. (Perhaps in the court cards to some extent)

    As I am watching this, there are "1,111 views". Doorways, openings.... as per numerology. Aside from that, I appreciate that you cover ethics and diversity. Also glad that you are bringing these topics to your yt channel because I am not much into IG yet or other media.

    I have the vindur deck and it is more gender neutral than most decks I’ve seen. It’s also watercolor and a lot of line work if anyone is interested in that type of art.

    I view tarot in a more “psychological” manner. The person I’m reading is just using their untapped mind when picking cards, its their mind showing them what they need to hear the only time it gets “spiritual” for me is when I’m ask for advice from spirit,looking into the future, synchronicities occur, and cards pop up

    I have one tarot deck, which was gifted to me, then i bought one oracle card deck. Those are good enough for me, i highly doubt i would ever get more. The 2 take a lot of psychic energy out of me to sustain, and i would rather have them be well-maintained by my energy than have a ton of decks that cant receive enough and therefore be almost inert. To each their own, but i am satisfied with my humble collection 🥰✌️

    I don’t follow a certain spread when I shuffle and pull cards. I ask a question and I pull as little as two or three cards, sometimes more if I want more clarity on the situation. I don’t follow past present future spread either. I just pull what I feel will give me enough info I need. I use what works best for me.

    I support having different decks for different people, so the diversity thing doesn't bother me, although I've always felt that both genders were fairly well represented in the Tarot. I could just be ignorant about that subject though. I do actually believe RWS is the most accessible tradition, but I am interested in one day branching out and trying different types of decks.

    I do enjoy your content. This was a great topic seeing so many different views. None neither right or wrong, all individual based opinions. Whether I agree or disagree makes no ones opinion less valid to them as it shouldn’t. This isn’t a case of is murder right or wrong...it’s what do you think about your opinion versus popular opinion. Great video.

    I really loved this discussion! Since you were discussing diverse decks and the need for more of them, I'd like to recommend the Numinous Tarot by Noel Arthur Hempel. It doesn't use gendered titles for any of the cards, has a wide variety of ethnicities, gender presentations, and people of different sizes; even has a handful of differently abled folks and has a polyamory-friendly Lovers card. :)
