Just music. The great american baritone Leonard Warren is singing live in russia, May 1958, the song "o del mio amato ben" by Donaudy. Willard Sektberg at the piano.
My God! Not only a wonderfully produced voice, but one of such natural, honeyed beauty that one can only regret that this prince amongst baritones is not more widely regarded today. A singer of great intelligence and refinement.
Stunning!!! The situation he obtains here of taming his huge, big baryton voice and adapt it so beautifuly to this highly romantic song is amazing. It´s like a brave lion playing between his claws with a tiny, delicate flower, making it look prettier, and afterwards letting it fly away unharmed.....
His personal character must be very gentle and warm-hearted. I always feel it when I listen to his singing. And also so much attractive. This song is unique for him. Simply PERFECT.
It’s so passionate, so exquisitely controlled, yet monstrous in its sheer virility and timbre I am moved to tears. Callas said he was the greatest baritone she ever heard!
I had the enormously moving experience of hearing him live in recital, Trovatore, Forza, and Rigoletto and, as a college student, of meeting him for an hour talk about his studies. He was very kind, generous, and filled with a rare, innate musicality too infrequently found. I am moved almost to tears each time I hear his recordings, both by the beauty of his sound and by the sense of loss. What an enormous gift to mankind!
Voce soave, grave profonda e raffinata, sugli alti e leggero e bellissimo.
Leonard Warren’s voice has a unique quality that constitutes the very essence of what “baritone” means - and he knew how to use it to greatest and most appealing effect! Simply extraordinary! That is what makes me want to listen to his recordings again and again. Thank you!
Wonderful singing by one of the finest baritones in Metropolitan Opera history. One of his peers, also on the roster, was the incomparable Robert Mc Ferrin. Hopefully, some footage of his performances will be located for future posting. His Verdi roles were stellar!
Robert McFerrin (Senior) was the father of popular vocalist Bobby McFerrin. If memory serves, he was the first African-American baritone to engaged by the Met. Based on what little I've heard, McFerrin had a very fine voice. Hopefully, more of Robert McFerrin's recordings will be posted on RUclips!
O God! What a pity!, yearning! Suffering! Nostalgia! I am listening here. He Is Like a father who has lost His daughter, and Is teaching us We, raugh, rude men may Also cry.
why do i feel that baritones are greater interpreters than tenors who sings the same art songs like this? this recording made my day! never heard this piece this great! wow! Just music indeed!
People who have listened both live said that Leonard was for long better, i don´t want to say that Bryn is not good, he´s an incredible artist, (for me specially when he sings lieder), no one said he is the greatest. take it easy.
Absolutely, but not for the key, a tenor singing in that key has an "easy" way for sing it, to sing softer, see the excelent Petre Munteanu's rendition, you'll see what i mean ruclips.net/video/3gZykkFq3Ao/видео.html
Munteanu's version is excelent, but you have to notice that they are singing in the same key a baritone and a tenor, one live and the other in studio, maybe if Warren low it a third he could have sing this with more facility, thanks for watching!!!

wow, so nice word, agree but I cannot come up such nice fit comments,
His personal character must be very gentle and warm-hearted. I always feel it when I listen to his singing. And also so much attractive. This song is unique for him. Simply PERFECT.
One the greatest Baritones of all time! RIP
Few singers have ever sung this song (or much of anything) better than Leonard Warren. Thanks for posting this. It's absolutely beautiful.
Not only a great voice and great singer but also a great interpreter. THANKS
maybe the greatest baritone in that sense, depth and knowledge in mature way.
Particular voice !!!!Great performance!!!!Perla.
A most extraordinary Voice, one of the greatest of all time!!

It’s so passionate, so exquisitely controlled, yet monstrous in its sheer virility and timbre I am moved to tears. Callas said he was the greatest baritone she ever heard!
Beauty, power, range - - Warren’s voice!!! Unmatched!!!
I had the enormously moving experience of hearing him live in recital, Trovatore, Forza, and Rigoletto and, as a college student, of meeting him for an hour talk about his studies. no wonder why his voice is so rich and full of dynamic colors, love also Ettore, I think Warren is much deeper in controling...
So much air power and resonance...inspirational
great baritone!
This man was The Greatest!

Wow. Great voice and interpretation!
Che meraviglia di fraseggio!!
no puedo dejar de oirlo!!! Què maravilla!! Gracias Xavier!! Abrazo amigo
Magnificent
MARAVIGLIOSO!!!
Glorious!Thanks for sharing.

I'm Lindon Warren and i m a baritione too and sang this won and won in an oprea competion
Stupendo 🌷
I'm surprised and not elated at his voice, as indeed he
sang so well in verdi , is this voice
Xavier que maravilla Leonard Warren!!!;(realmente Leonard Warendorf de padres ruso-judìos emigrados a USA).Saludos!!!

So beautiful!
Great voice, great singing, particularly wonderfully sensitive cover tone on the high phrases
you touched the right word, yes it is his sensitive sense,
Bravo!!!

❤️

If you want to hear a soprano sing this aria, please listen to Arleen Auger Love Song recording, it is absolutely flawless.
As I had the luck to hear him singing Verdi on opera stages, I am surprised that he coul tame his huge voice to such tenderness. Wonderful !!!
A voice like that happens once in a century.
leone della lirica .
Yeah, izar1234 that´s why i made this video, in this song we can appreciate the incredible technique of this unique baritone, the great Warren
Totally agree with you
In his earliest recordings, all these flaws you described are present in such small doses that they ADD to the qualities of his voice.
God must be a bariton!
Actually they did..In the description..
I put "the great" not "the greatest", and i put it for all who want to enjoy the music, if you don´t like it change the channel.

@Laeghaire I totally agree :)

take it easy.
@gotbolsheviks 2 different eras.
Very good your video!!!
Look for Felipe Peletta also singing this song and many others.
Would that key work for a tenor who sits in the full dramatic tenor and heldentenor ranges?
Absolutely, but not for the key, a tenor singing in that key has an "easy" way for sing it, to sing softer, see the excelent Petre Munteanu's rendition, you'll see what i mean ruclips.net/video/3gZykkFq3Ao/видео.html
Bradley Monroe This is the low voice. Might work for Tenor 2 but for high Tenor they'd need the high voice version to really play with it.
lucky russinas on this day
I would tend to disagree on that count... Bryn may not be able to measure up to Warren, but he is in no way boring.
Gotta agree. Bryn really bored me to tears on every occasion that I listened to him. He sings notes, yeah, but he doesn't sing the music.
Maybe he stimulates your ear in a certain way, and that's great for you. But he could never do that for me.

He's great, but the greatest? I think not. Bryn Terfel has him beat hands down.
