  • I invite you to come join me on a walking tour through arguably one of the most charming cities in all of Hungary: the ancient capital of Esztergom. Actually I'd even say that this is one of the best historical towns in Central Europe. It was the capital of the Magyars for over three centuries during the Árpád era, and has maintained its importance ever since as the seat of the Hungarian Catholic church. Most visitors to Esztergom are wowed by its awe-inspiring basilica, a crescendo atop it's highest peak and our tour today does indeed culminate there. But before hand, on my history themed walking tour we will step back in time to the days of the Turkish-Hungarian wars at the turn of the 18th century. During that time there was a man named Vak Bottyán aka Blind Bottyi who really stood out as a folk hero. He happened to call Esztergom his home and that is why I chose his life and times as a theme. And what a fella he was! Beloved by poor and rich and idolized for his heroism in battle. He fought for justice and freedom and truth until his dying days and of course became a sort of legend once he lost his right eye. On this tour you will learn all about Bottyán János aka Johnny Boats as we delight and revel in the shadows of Esztergom's most significant and beautiful buildings. Come join me on a architectural bonanza amongst the cobblestone streets of charming old Esztergom.
    There are 5 different tiers of support you can join on Patreon, the cheapest is just 1 dollar a month. Right now we are up to 187 dollars per month!! Amazing :D When we reach the first goal of 500 dollars I'm going to throw a huge pizza party in downtown budapest. Help me reach our goal!!

    As a American I was married to a Hungarian girl from Zebegeny we went to Esztergom many times...The cathedral there is magnificent....No more wife but looking forward to going back to Hungary soon to visit. She said they use to go during the soviet times across to Austria to buy food but the border guards would stop you and check your car and if they found food they would take it so her dad made secret compartments in the car to hide all the meat...

    I was born and raised in Esztergom, it was really nice to see you there. The green building where you pointed at 9:02 is Bottyán János school there is a Bottyán János bust inside and the students are always touching his nose for luck. Also at 10:36 that is a Piros Kakas ( red rooster 🐔) and it’s the symbol of Párkány( Šturovo 🇸🇰)
    Keep up the good work as a local I can still learn from you.

    Glad to see you came back for another Esztergom video! The building behind you in the opening scene used to be his house, and in the place of the building all covered up on the corner used to be his brewery. Esztergom also has a street named after his wife.

    Thank you for your enthusiasm for my hometown - and I love that people recognized you! I actually went to Bottyàn Jànos preschool/kindergarten (Bottyàn Ovi) 😉. It was up the street from city hall (yellow building) in the beginning of the video. So thanks for spotlighting Bottyàn Jànos - Esztergom has such a long history with so many important figures, I feel like Vak Bottyàn doesn’t always get the attention he deserves. Well done!

    2:10 Trnava Hugnarian? As far as I know, Trnava was always Slovak/German. Where did you get that information from that Trnava was a Hungarian hot bed if I may ask?
    Btw. Nice video :) Enjoyed, your walking tour.

      It’s original name is Nagyszombat. The holy crown of Hungary 🇭🇺 still can be seen on the top of the basilica in centre of the city.

    • @dsodragus4616
      @dsodragus4616 7 месяцев назад

      @@gabor247 No. The original name was something like Tyrnavia but it was later changed to Nagyszombat.
      And for your second argument. The fact that the city has a Hungarian name doesn't provide *any* evidence that the people are of Magyar origin.
      Trnava never had Magyar population.
