This album is so good! I like how it experiments with the ZUN-style in terms of music. I also love some of the creative choices like Aya having a more pronounced nose to better show that she's a tengu. It's little things like this that I really wish were in canon. Kinda like how I wish Nitori had a plate on her like an actual kappa. Cuz sometimes you could mistake Aya for a regular girl thats half-dressed up like a tengu (especially when she doesn't have wings lol). Anyway, keep up the great work!
I do recall Aya having wings in some earlier works. They just happen to have disappeared in the later works (that, or she can just make them appear when she wants). But anyway, I think that's one of my favorite creative decisions as well. I also have this headcannon that kappa like Nitori have bald spots under their hats that serve sorta the same purpose as the head plates.
To be honest, I really like your character designs as well as the theme songs even though the 4 characters does belong to ZUN somehow but it was really nice. I also love the story concept which helps us to remember about the other characters.
Your art has enamored me for years now and only today do I finally check out your music. My goodness you're a progidy, every single song here is great at *least* and half of them are utterly masterful. Im sorry for overlooking your musical endeavors for so long. Also your character designs are amazing.
Alright, three months later, I think it's time I give my full and honest review of ZoAM. I had a lot of thoughts build up and I think they can help you see what people like and what you could improve on. Because this album shows that you can do amazing, but also outlines your shortcomings. Stage 1: Nene is an amazing first stage and Touhou fan-made character. She is a youkai with a twist, a yama-orabi with a punk lolita aesthetic. Her theme is absolutely endearing and catchy, nothing bad to say about it and her design feels very touhou while still bringing in something new to the table. Stage 2: I love the stage theme, it feels very relaxed and whimsical and the Loose Rain leitmotif nicely foreshadows a fairy-related creature. I think it's funny you showed Marisa for that one too. On the topic of the boss, Margarita feels both very touhou and not touhou at all. Her outfit and general aesthetic is amazing and would have her blending in well with Gensokyo's crowd, however her connection to fairies is not implied in her design at all which I think is a big shame. Though maybe that make sense as she's a slavic monster? Her theme took some time getting used to Stage 3: The stage theme sounds a lot like a sea shanty. Is it because of the "Sea of Mist" thing? It feels a bit strange considering it opened with japanese instruments and uses a lot of movements from HSiFS Stage 3. The setting of the stage also feels too visually and atmospherically similar to UM Stage 3? Zheng Shu is another endearing character! I absolutely loved her and her theme ever since they were first released, though I feel like the Tiger-Patterned Bishamouten leitmotif is a bit too jarring and doesn't really fit the character? Her theme is strangely menacing though lol. She has an adorable design, I love the giraffe print and although the color palette seems a bit boring, it makes sense. I feel like her role in game's progression and story makes her too similar to Kutaka though, especially as a worker of Ministry of Right and Wrong Stage 4: This is where I feel like the originality takes a massive dip. The inspirations feel more avert and "in your face" and while they were excuse-able in earlier stages, here they feel too overt to ignore. The stage theme has a lot of similarities to Dragon God Flying to Mount Hourai as well as Faint Dream and visually... let's face it, it's just MoF stage 4, but I think that can be excused. And I like the appearance of Minoriko. The design you gave her is really cute and somewhat serves to foreshadow the boss. Kushinada however is... lorewise redundant and boring. I guess it's a nice reference to Minoriko's theme, but her appearance here doesn't make sense and her lore and appearance are just a 1-to-1 copy of her japanese lore while also stealing Minoriko's thunder as the harvest goddess. Imo, that's an issue that'll persist to the end of the album - not enough iterating on ideas. Bringing in Gods from the Japanese pantheon can be done well, for example Fairyland of Mishmash brought in Ame no Uzume, Amaterasu and Suzanoo, but all of them feel unique in design or in how the story frames them Stage 5: More overt inspiration to other Touhou tracks and also Phantom of the Opera? That's unexpected lol but I like it, it adds to the creepy atmosphere. The boss feels... boring. I've grown to dislike japanese clothing on Touhou characters, unless it explicitly makes sense for them as a character, like an onmyouji. Stage 6: A really nice breath of fresh air and excitement musically, however I have a lot of gripes with Amanozako conceptually. She mostly suffers a lot of the same problems Kushinada suffers from: being a copy of not only japanese mythology but also being outclassed in execution by existing touhou characters - Sagume and Seija. Stage EX: The same problems other post-demo stages: not enough originality. Also, hi Fairyland of Mishmash, I mentioned you 3 stages ago. Not much to say what hasn't been said about previous stages, this time Sagiso largely resembling Nemuno instead To sum up my thoughts, all of the themes and characters are charming, and I found myself humming a lot of them, or my ears craving them a lot. However, there are some obvious pitfalls I think should be addressed, the biggest one being lack of originality. I understand creating original concepts, music, character designs, story is not easy so please do not take my criticism as me bashing on the project PS: I like the choice on instruments for the project, a lot of Trilian's and Retrologue's more electronic synth-y instruments makes the incident feel rather alien and unusual, while the usual SD series instruments tie it nicely back to feel like your usual Touhou fare. I just wish the alien feel was reflected in the characters too
Thank you for your feedback. I'm glad there are parts of this album you liked, at the very least. So basically, the early-game stuff (Stage 1-3) is fine, but all the late-game stuff isn't all that fine, I suppose? Haha, I didn't think anyone would find a problem with Zenith of Antinomic Monarch aside from nitpicks, especially given that I saw it as an improvement over Submarine Dragon and how unpolished its whole story was. Really, if I can't come up with any ideas for this next Touhou-styled album I have in mind, then Zenith of Antinomic Monarch may just end up being my last forray into this sort of thing. Also, a few tidbits (sorry if I sould whiny in some areas, this is simply a really personal topic for me): - I'm honestly not too proud of the Stage 3 and EX Stage themes myself. In fact, I find them to be some of the weaker tracks I've made in a series of weak tracks. They're both reused from older projects, just remade for this one. - Minoriko wasn't always the stage 4 midboss, but the actual stage 4 boss. There was always going to be a reference to Kushinadahime due to the logic of "Minoriko ➡ Inadahime ➡ Susanoo ➡ Amanozako", but Kushinada was added later on after I recieved some advice along the lines of (and I paraphrase) "it tends to be more interesting to see new characters as bosses rather than returning ones". I was stuck on Minoriko's role in the overall story anyway, and there's said to be multiple harvest gods in Touhou canon, so I went along with it and made Kushinada. - Music and storywriting were never my strong points, I know that very well. It's a problem I had even back in 2013-2015, when Reawakening of Youkai Mountain wasn't some cringy reminder of my past. Music is significantly harder to work on than art because there's more elements I'd have to consider, while with art I can just draw a few lines and call it a day. There's also my problem with procrastination, which comes from a lack of inspiration and motivation. - I think all the criticisms are more of a problem of having to carry entire albums by myself, allowing all my pitfalls to seep through. If I had people helping me where I fall, then maybe these problems won't be as obvious. But help is hard to come by, and my team management skills aren't the best, so I therefore just have to work with what I have and face the inevitable "my art is bad" or "my music is unoriginal".
@@MadamePhoton I completely understand, carrying the weight of an entire album on your shoulders is a lot to carry and the sole fact that you have made two albums in the first place is impressive in and of itself. Please, don't feel discouraged by my feedback, I genuinely feel like there's potential in your artistic abilities, maybe they just need more time in the oven? I agree, having original characters is usually better/more interesting than having returning characters, but trying to find something else to them that has not been explored by an existing touhou character could leviate the difficulty of character design.
