Fort Stevens is a retired military installation within Fort Stevens State Park in the most northwestern corner of Oregon, just outside of Warrenton and on the Colombia River. It was originally built during the American Civil War and was active from 1863 to 1947. The aim of Fort Stevens, as well two military installations on the Washington side, was to guard the mouth of the Columbia River. Although the bulk of past wars never made it to Oregon, the fort was shelled by the deck gun of a Japanese submarine on one occasion during WWII.
For a small admission fee you can freely walk among the old batteries and barracks and get a feel for what life would be like to be stationed here. Over years of inactivity nature has been slowly taking back portions of the fort but much of it is regularly maintained. There is a museum which offers tours as well as special educational events. There are also several hiking trails, picnic areas, and even a herd of elk which often lounge around the park. Enjoy!

It's a beautiful park. Also if you're interested check out Fort Canby and Fort Columbia just a short drive across the Astoria-Megler Bridge on the Long Beach peninsula.
