I love seeing how enthusiastic your daughter is about the whole process. She will fondly remember building this guitar with her Dad for the rest of her life!
Wow so cool. The reason for putting foil on the the back of the pick guard would be to shield the pickups to reduce unwanted noise or hum, but i dont think it really make that much differnce in all honesty. I like the aesthetic chioce of a see through pickguard. Very cool.
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it, we sure had fun 😃 Yeah I think folks were mentioning the foil in the previous video not from a shielding standpoint but just as a way to make the pickguard not see through. I'm with you though, I this it looks cool.
Mike, thanks for getting this posted. This is going to be an August project to make knobs for a cheap bass that I am going to modify. Won't have a pressure pot so will how it works out. Thanks again.
You're welcome! If you using clear resin you'll almost certainly see bubbles unless you can pop them with a torch/heat gun (not sure how the silicone mold will react to that). If you follow the link for the clear slow resin - there are different size options on that page (I'm a genius and it took me a minute to see that there are different size bottles to choose from 🙄) I only say that, because as you can see, it would take me a LOOOONNNNGGG time to go through a big bottle of resin just making knobs 😂 Let me know how it turns out!
It's funny you would ask! I thought about going off on a tangent, but fought the urge 😂 I've done a couple wooden knobs and pickup rings (out of ebony with half lapp joints 😃) on a few guitars in the past! Anything in particular you have questions about or are you just wondering my thoughts on them?
@@WoodshopMike Right on. I had a while where I made a number of pickguards and bought a 30 or 35 degree chamfer bit because I thought it looked better then the more common 45 degree chamfer.
Pro tip - make a first responder friend. The amount of syringes thrown away because of expiration dates is crazy. They're going to be used for training or ending up in the trash anyways.
Was looking at your Blog from June 18, 2015 about different dyes... I'm looking at making a cribbage board and dying it red and blue... any preference advice would be very much appreciated.

We both had a great time with the project!
Well isn’t this just the most fun video of you two!! That’s so awesome you made that Mike! What memories that sweet girl will have with that guitar.
We had a ton of fun with the project 😃. Now it's just time to teach her how to play!
This video has so much good information. I came for the casting silicone molds and stayed for the sanding tips!
Glad you enjoyed it Mike! I feel like I've gotten my share of sanding tips from you my friend👊

@@WoodshopMike Will do!
So cool! I would totally do something like this for an acoustic guitar, if it wasn’t an abomination to do so lol
I'm sure something like this could still be done tastefully on an acoustic!
@@WoodshopMike You know, I may just do it! Thanks
Any thoughts on creating wooden knobs, pickup rings/parts/ covers, and pick guards?

Good work. Did you bevel the pickguard edges?
Thank you! I did on one, but didn't like the aesthetic as much so on the one we used the edges are cut straight

@mattliebenau9083 yeah I bet that would look much better. 45 is just too steep.

That's a great idea! Thanks 👍👊

There are several different dyes. I like Keda or TransTint
You could have saved many hours using UV resin.
