It seems, on the basis of historic research, that the present situation in Reykjaness in Iceland is more serious than simply magmatic movement. Grindavik is situated on a microplate and wedged in between the American and European plates, just like an iceberg wedged in between two landmasses. What we see in Grindavik is like how an iceberg reacts to the presure on two sides. Between the two landmasses is upwelling of magma. This movement on the microplate causes cracks and magma flows into it. That is called a dike. At Grindavik cracks form but lava doesn't come out, because there is little presure on the magma. This magma is reacting on the forces and flows in the newly formed dike from North to South and back. The earthquakes are caused by techtonic forces, not like in a vulcano by magmatic forces. Same about the earlier 'tourist volcanoes'. It doesn't explode out like in a Strombolian eruption but flows out, usually at the end of a dike. There is some presure, but little in comparison with a volcano that is fed by a hot spot or a connection to a magma chamber. There is no magma chamber under Grindavik. But there are techtonic forces. Compare it to an iceberg that is wedged between two mountains. At the sides of the iceberg most of the cracks appear and water flows into the cracks. Reykjaness peninnsula is like the edge of the microplate. There are no major volcanoes on Reykjaness, only vents for lava when the microplate is under pressure. This happened before with Brennisteinfjoll and Krysuvik erupted in 1341 and 1340, when a similar event happened. After that there were a number of enormous eruptions of Katla, Hekla and others, to finish with the biggest eruption in historic times on Iceland, when in 1362 erupted with a VEI 6 eruption, comparible with the eruptions of Krakatau. That sequence of events may happen again. First eruptions on Reykjaness, then eruptions of major volcanoes around the microplate. Just like happened between 1340 - 1372 there will be a volcanic winter, pandemics, famine and subsequent wars. After that, a little iceage may occur like it did in North-West Europe.
