What Did I Do Wrong To Lose This Spinnerbait Bass?

  • I’m determined to add spinnerbaits to my arsenal of techniques this year, by my first time catching fish on a spinnerbait this season and I lost an important fish. Is there something obvious I did wrong on the hook-set or retrieve? If there is a certain thing I should be doing with spinnerbaits I need to learn that from the start!

I throw a spinnerbait a lot (see any of my videos lol ) when I lose fish, it’s when they jump. If I feel the fish start to rise I stuff the rod down or change the angle. This can help. I also wait to set the hook so they get the whole bait in their mouth, it’s a hard lure for them to throw if they actually bite it. Most the time when you lose one, it’s just in the lip skin

You are a farther north than I am, how does a spinnerbait work on those awesome grassy lakes up north in Ohio? I'm excited to try it on East Harbor and Mosquito later this summer!

@@GirlGoneFishing I can't catch crap with spinners at East Harbor. Seems black/blue jigs dragging them through the grass. Others do good brownish green bladed jigs. Black/blue wacky before the the weeds get bad near the kayak ramp by the birding trail. Hooked a nice one on a KVD sexy frog white, came off halfway to the kayak. But I burnt too much time in the lilly pads shallow area.
The big one are in the middle 6-8ft grass area. Gotta jig them out. I'm not a expert but been the twice this month. Last weekend it was pretty grassy. I said screw this and went on a Tibbels walleye charter next day and limited out 😂

Reference the lost spinner bait fish - the hook set looked good and it looks like you maintained tension - the only thing that might’ve saved it is to go rod tip down into the water to prevent it from jumping as it gets closer to the boat 👍🏼

Getting them to bite is one thing landing them is another. But sometimes it just doesn't work out at the end. Just happens. Use the equipment you got confidence in. You'll know by experience when to change.

I use spinner baits constantly love them a few years back I was having trouble with Bass spitting the hook-on spinner baits what I did to help solve that problem was changed the angle of the rod on the retrieve lower to the water surface and constant tension and crank it in as fast as you can, don't play the fish no pauses on the retrieve if you lose tension or pause during the retrieve the fish will feel the line slack and he is going to jump almost every time hope this helps love the videos keep them coming.

So just horse it back and no messing around! That is the same conclusion I came to learning to fish a chatterbait 2 years ago when I was losing them on the jump... set that hook and reel like crazy! Thanks!

Everyone loses fish, even the pros. It is never easy to handle. I am a huge spinnerbait fisherman and if I cash a check at a tourny it is usually spinnerbait fishing. I have found out buying a manual hook sharpener and sharpen my spinnerbaits right out of the box and my losing spinnerbait fish is a rare event. Sometimes the fish WINS!!!

  • @mikecollett8513

Your hook point should catch on your nail or it's not sharp enough (my opinion). Go with 14/17 pound test minimum and a rod rated for those test, or you'll get excessive stretch in the hook set. Weakening the set. After fish hooked, keep rod handle at 30-45 degrees for max pressure, bend, but still giving rod some recovery flex. Past that, it's fishing not catching. Nice performance for this derby. Do love a spinner bait bite! All the best.

You did nothing wrong - it happens. Word of advice from wathing the video: When you set the hook, you pulled that rod tip behind you meaning you had too much line out. As soon as you cast, take the slack out promptly and keep the tip closest to the fish but with about 30° angle.

Likely did nothing wrong...Fish will get off every now & then...BY THE WAY, just a couple years ago...i mentioned "you need to try a spinnerbait"...your response was something like "i just can't get into the spinnerbait technique" i do believe the last few videos a spinnerbait was being tossed around 😂 SMART....1st bass bait i ever used & is the most versatile lure out there...can be fished top to bottom...keep on tossin' them! 👍

Hahahaha yeah, one of my failings is when I am not good at something I tend to either completely embrace it and almost obsessively try to get good at it, or I pretend like it doesn't exist. 🤣 For my first few years this was all so overwhelming that when I was out on the water my brain was mostly in a constant state of panic that I couldn't even think straight. Now that it is all becoming less unfamiliar I am starting to be able to handle new stuff... plus my expectations keep going up so my "quiver of arrows" as far as techniques go has to grow or I won't ever get my first fishing trophy! Thanks for sticking with me all this time! :)
