I feel the exact same way living in the UK. I left Kenya when I was 18 (2017) and I thought that moving abroad to the UK to study would make my life better but honestly, I feel a spiritual pull to go back home. I've graduated and got a job, but I've never been unhappier. It's hard to explain it to people back home because they don't understand what I'm complaining about. I know that Kenya has its issues but home is still home. It's the only country that I'll ever belong to. Out here, I feel like a guest and it's almost like I'm tolerated not accepted. I think that for all the automation, the UK and the West have lost out on human capital. People here don't speak to one another, everyone is always in a rush to get to the next appointment or interview or bus. Whereas in Kenya and other African countries, neighbours know each other and look out for one another. Back home I know I can never go hungry because my neighbours will be my keeper and I will be theirs. Out here, you are on your own. Even the people you meet at work are not true friends. The weather is terrible all the time. The rain over here is not like African rain. This rain is painfully cold. There is no thunder, the winds are so strong you can't use an umbrella and it can shower for three days straight. During the winter, the sun rises at 9am and sets at 3pm. I will never take the sun in Kenya for granted again. I am working on moving back permanently. For now, I will save up as much as I can in my job and when the time comes, I will definitely leave. Life abroad might look nice in the pictures and videos, but, maisha kwa ground ni different, as we Kenyans say.

Wow, from Kenya we see you guys having it all and wish we could just have the same, but it's funny how we rarely see what we have, including family and how easy it is to make friends.
When COVID hit I had just resigned my job and when stuff got hard I just moved back home and fast forward to now, my life is back to the way it was, albeit better and all this thanks to "my community"who held me.
This was stuff I took for granted earlier on, but now I know better. We as Africa may not "have much", but we have a lot of we look around.
I hope you all figure out your paths and hang in there while you plan your next moves in life.❤

This is my 11th year in the US. I've always wanted to go back home since the first time I set foot here...for pretty much the same reasons, the winters are harsh and I've never gotten used to them.... The food is hectic/bad especially having to wonder whether something is organic or not and whether antibiotics were used to grow it...the individualistic nature of Americans brings deep loneliness sometimes and the artificial nature of relationships in this culture is sad....the list is long.
I'm grateful for the progress I've made here but I feel like I lost a huge part of me. It's hard to explain to Kenyans why being in America is a loss. I've woken up in the middle of the night to search on Google how to say 40 in Swahili.... I'm obviously anxious about losing my languages... seems like it's the only thing I have left sometimes.
I hope I can live in Kenya again someday. I'm currently in medical school and I still have to go through residency but I hope that after residency, I will at least be able to live in Kenya for 6 months a year.... hopefully one day even open a practice in Kenya...for now, I hang in there tightly and hope I don't lose the Kenyan left in me...

When I was in Zim I used to say once I leave this country I will never come back but going there for a holiday in August, I didn't feel the emptiness that I feel in Europe. The first day I came back to Poland from my holiday, I felt the depression starting to kick in. The problem is most Kenyans consider moving to the US as a dream irrespective of what they end up doing. No one considers an alternative and especially for young people trying to breakthrough or break from the cycle of poverty. It's highly assumed that when you leave you have made it. I reckon what is keeping most Kenyans abroad is the expectations from others back home especially family. Going back is perceived as a failure. I spent 1.5years in Denver, CO and to be honest i enjoyed it but I realized soon i had to redefine success for myself. I concluded moving back to Africa was more fulfilling and rather earn less and be happy. It is sad to see how we get caught up "living other peoples expectations of our own lives". I highly recommend you do you and what makes you happy as selfish as that might sound. You have life to make the most of it but forget God.

Totally agree, it's much easier to move to a foreign country when straight from high school cos there is time and room to adjust and make changes without obligations or family responsibilities. Adults who already have career or family face drastic challenges adjusting to a new country like the US or any other country cos they would have to restart life from the start in a new country! I always say if you already have a family, a house, a job, land, business in Africa, please don't uproot yourself or sell your assets in the name of leaving to go live abroad! Living abroad is over rated, to say the least . Not to say it's a bad thing, but saying choose and move wisely.

Because I believe that 'good is the enemy of great'. Can't start off your career by settling.. especially when you know you have a higher calling.. I love how you put this. Great points, glad moving back home worked out for you. The other side of the coin is that your 🇺🇸 diaspora experience is greatly shaped by the community and friendships you build. Plus if you live in a state that doesn’t have extreme winter (for example most of California), then there’s no seasonal depression. One of the biggest pluses is taxes cover so many public facilities and schools for kids. Good luck! Different strokes for different folks.

Having lived away from home for 7 years I've learnt to appreciate some things that we take for granted around us. Our country is undergoing great transformations na mbele iko tu sawa. Let me say that I have lived in the US my whole life born and raised, been out of the country a few times. And what you have explained especially the winters make me want to move back home to Kenya,🙂. I miss it and have never been there. I feel as though I wasn't meant to be in the cold, not seeing the sun. I mean the temp drops to a slight chill and my nose runs like a damn faucet, but being in heat is much more accommodating for me, except the excessive sweating. I generate a lot of heat, hence my utter hatred of the cold.
On a more serious note, I was not raised with racist parents or family( everyone treated by their actions and character) and miss having a diverse set of friends like I had in the military. I am very introverted, have been my whole life and that type of friend group had a natural way to pull me out of depression and introversion.
Hope, I truly pray that you are happy with your decision and wish you nothing but the best. I have no doubt that you will be successful surrounded by family and community that you talk about. There just isn't that here and the people that say we do are fooling themselves, because in all actuality they are just busy-bodies that just want to know what you are doing so they can gossip and talk about you behind your back, because they hate anybody that is happy in what they are doing. That's not community.
So, Hope, go and crush this life, it's all we get. Blessings to you and yours.
