What’s your best road trip tip?

This seems very counterintuitive, but I’ve found that if I DON’T listen to music, the drive actually SEEMS like it goes faster. My thought is that by listening to music, you give your brain’s narrative all these mental markers of time that has been elapsing, as you consume song after song and album after album. But if the only stimulation is the seamless string of scenery, accompanied by your own thoughts, it all kinda consolidates into a shorter perception of time having passed.

In June my best friend and I did a road trip from the East coast of North Carolina to Los Angeles, mostly camping and hiking along the way. A silver lining of COVID has been taking more safe trips like this and exploring amazing places right at home. Definitely could've used some of these tips on the packing front though... Thanks for the video!

1:22 And here's me, leaving at 7 PM or later so I have the road all to myself for trips < 800 miles. Which is not great for site seeing, but if you're driving through much of the Midwest you're not really missing anything but cornfields.

I did a round trip from Minnesota to Texas. I kept a small cooler with drinks and snacks on the passenger side legs area. I wore boots on the trips but kept a pair of tennis shoes handy in case my feet get too hot or get tired. A jacket handy incase of inclement weather. A trash bag handy for random trash. Extra water in the car at all time. Emergency roadside kit. Flash light. Med kit.

As the driver on most road trips, I would recommend corn nuts as a snack. Good for making noise in your head if you happen to be getting tired or zoning out on a long stretch. 👍🍻

In terms of trash management, I usually keep a handful of empty small grocery or food takeout plastic or paper bags in my car, and use them as trash bags in my car. And, if you take your own car on the road trip, keep a small hand-held vacuum cleaner to keep your car clean during the trip!

Although I don't have a dog, I use collapsible fabric bowls for two reasons: 1. snacks on the road (car, planes, trains) for the kids & 2. portable valet to keep my keys, rings and reading glasses at my destination in one place & 3. reduce trash. Another benefit is it reduces waste.

One thing I do before EVERY road trip (planned ones anyway) is to take my car to a mechanic to get a trip check done. It makes sure that things are working properly. Also, make sure you have stuff for car emergencies, like spare tires, jack, jumper cables, etc. And know how to use them. Sometimes you get into places that don't have phone reception of any kind and your car decides to crap out on you. I've had it happen to me before and it wasn't fun.

We each packed an ordinary ceramic mug for our Covid road trip. This made motel stays way more pleasant. Mugs are very versatile and easy to wash. They let your coffee cool down and taste good in the morning, and they're great for a quick microwave bouillon at night. They're also excellent for cereal or wine. Our mugs were pretty distinct, as well, so there was no chance of messing with somebody else's beverage, nor would you be stuck washing somebody else's dirty cup.

I bought 3 identical suitcases for us that fit easily in our trunk with a cooler (holds frozen water used for ice & misc food) and whatever particulars needed for that trip. Our personal bags/backpacks (for personal tech, toiletry bags, jackets, water bottles, a crossbody bag, etc.) are near us in the car (except when we make a stop enroute, then everything goes in the trunk).
In a common bag I bring a blue-tooth speaker, a first-aid bag, coffee/tea making equipment, instant oatmeal, snacks, wipes/hand-sanitizer, sunscreen, baggies, etc.
For when we rent a car I add a car-tech bag that contains cords, adaptors, a dash-cam, etc that takes less than 5 min to set up (including paring our phones for music).

Great video full of good tips, thank you guys!
From my side not much to add - among essentials I only missed the obligatory cigarette lighter charging plug plus cable, might have overseen it.
If we leave the field of pure minimalism and short car travels and enter the area of longer car trips (of several weeks or so) I have one more tip: on such long travels, we do usually split our luggage. Means if we are on a trip which requires one or two overnighters before reaching our (1st) destination where we stay longer, we have always one smaller piece of luggage which we take in the hotel, whiles the bigger rest of the luggage simply stays in the car.
The overnighter luggage (I use currently my Osprey Farpoint 40 for that purpose) contains only bare overnighting essentials such as our cosmetics, underwear and other items to change, money, papers, laptops and other electronix incl. all items which have to be recharged, plus some snacks and noodle soups in case the food in the hotel is not to our taste or happyness ... ;-)
That concept works, of course, on most of our travels only on places where the car is during the night under surveillance - e.g. underground parking in the hotel or a designated hotel parking lot with watchmen etc.

We have a problem with thieves hitting rest stops and freeway side businesses along major traveler highways (such as the long route up from Las Angeles). Looking for bags in the trunk. We have to leave the rear window down or the glass gets busted. Have to carry our luggage inside or use the drive-thru. One bag travel is mandatory unlike being optional for flights.

I just thought of another one... know what the winter driving/tire/chain laws are in each state or country. Are all-season tires going to work w/ AWD/4WD? Why do I need to carry chains on a car I can't put them on? (Subaru has shallow wheel wells and the chains will cut some important wires) Why do Salt Lake City people drive 80 MPH in a blizzard?

I bet you could have a leather one made by various leatherworkers, but I'm not sure if that's what you had in mind. It's possible someone would work with something like a waxed canvas as well.
