  • We are back with more DIY themed decorations. We love carving styrofoam props and this time we are making a saguaro cactus. This video focuses on how we carved and sculpted white bead foam into a desert saguaro cactus prop for our haunted ghost town. It's just another look into how we accomplish some of our foam carving and sculpting projects that go into our home haunts. This one happens to be an 8' tall Saguaro Cactus that goes nicely with this year's haunted ghost town theme for our yard haunt attraction and display. What old abandoned western mining town would be complete without cactus in its desert landscape. This year Grave Rock Gulch was meant to have three to four of these props at different heights complete with arms and short toothpick cactus needles painted with white Firefly black light glow in the dark paint. When completed it would have had an awesome glowing effect like the previous prickly pear cactus foam props shared earlier in another behind the scenes video. Like so many other plans for props the deadline came up on us and we were unable to complete the project. Jeana was able to display one of the unfinished cactus which helped fill space and looked great in the back corner near the old spanish mission facade and water fountain prop. Learn the steps she took like using our homemade do it yourself hot wire foam cutting tool, hot knife, filing and sanding with rasps, files, sanding blocks with different grit sandpaper and painting. A 3/4" plywood base was cut and a 3' piece of steel rebar was attached that the cactus slid onto to stabilize and keep standing up. We both hope the video helps inspire and give ideas and insights to your future project needs.

You are very talented with your details in your work. I hope to see more projects you make that get more and more complex to create. I also love your DIY editing as there is no loud annoying music, just how to do it. Thanks for that.

I dunno why, but this video gave me two ideas, a radio active cactus, and a cyber cactus {since green is the color as the protective layering over most circuits} Instead of it having needles i'd probably make it have leds... I think i could pull that one off fairly easily ^_^

I'm a bit of a tinkerer, i do crazy stuff like that on occasion. I'll post a video to my channel "the ghost quarter" once i do it.
I might do a simple video on my glow torches i made. I made actual glow in the dark torches. That you guessed it glow in the dark. That may have to be my next video on that channel.

Do you have to coat it in something before painting it? Or do you coat after painting?

OH and also, Chris or Jeana...where do you guys get that white foam from for your tombstones in the past? Looks like 4 or 5 inch in the videos..the pink stuff at Home Depot goes up 2 dollars a month and way to expensive..and nobody lets it go for free around here :( Id appreciate the help! :)

I heard that you have a home made foam cutter. I use foam cutters all the time. I need a larger one. I would love to see and know how you made yours. If possible. I love all the work on the ghost town.

It was a craigslist find from some building getting rid of it, they were using it as sound proofing over the walls. Some haunter friends of ours gave it to us. There are stores in our area that you can purchase foam in those sizes though, like Foam Mart and other vendors in LA

Why didn’t you show how you cut the foam n round in, that would of made it the video more exciting.😐but still I enjoy it.
