We need to get past this misplaced assumption that we are the 4th or 5th best team. Go back over the calender year and you'll see this isn't the case. We're a significant way into the season now and we have the worst GD in the top 13. This suggests we're in a false position and are getting away with it to be so high up. If this continues over the rest of the season we're looking at a midtable finish. I'm all for trying to be positive but at some point realism has to take over 💜💙
End of the day every team is struggling a bit except probably Liverpool & Chelsea and probably Arsenal to some extent, but even these teams will have a blip at some point. As much as Forest are doing really well I doubt they finish top 6, I can't see City improving much all season and honestly think Pep will walk end of season. We just gotta keep hanging in there till end of Jan then we will be in a much better place
Bro, I would argue that our defending has been terrible if not dreadful since January. Tottenham scored 6 goals past us in 2 games last season, Newcastle scored 8, Liverpool 6. This season, teams like Crystal Palace have scored 4 past us in 2 games already. It's abysmal at the back, abysmal. But the problem is, it was at Arsenal when Emery left and it was at PSG. I'm not sure Emery has the skill set to organise it. Don't get me wrong Dean Smith, and Gerrard couldn't do it either and I'm not sure who can. But im worried.
Of course the defending hasn't been great but that's a collective thing not just 1 player to blame, I read comments like " we would of won that game if Mings was playing" against forest ....that's being short sighted! So many fans jump on our players for 1 mistake it's shameful! Comments like I never wanna see Carlos wear a villa shirt again....really? Where is the support when the team needs it? Clean sheets and perfect football doesn't exist so stop thinking it does. Every player that walks on that pitch goes on there to try his hardest and play to 100%, not to make mistakes and lose. So get behind them and support them because anything else is detrimental to our success.
It’s really tight points wise, between 4th-13th. Just 5 points. Forget league position as that will yo-yo all year. The issue is dropped points and not having them on the board from games we should close out or do better. We now have to make it up elsewhere from, on paper, tougher opponents. Last year we did JUST enough to get over the line due to injuries and running out of steam and lucky spurs didn’t take advantage. We are losing that luxury early in the season this time round and making it more difficult come March / April / May and 5th spot (for CL) May slip through our fingers and we will look back on these games early in season as the reason why
Think I might have made this point before. But we are not putting games to bed. We often get high Xg chances and just don't put it into the net especially if we are in the lead. We just seem content and then get nervous in the last 10 minutes. We've left a fair amount of points behind us.
Agreed re We’re in a good place - I predicted/said I would be happy with 6th… that said, Coefficient FC are flying, 5th is ON for UCL… keep the faith, looks at where the likes of Spurs & Newcastle are given THEIR expectations… 💜💙
A defence of all the talents is a no-brainer, Pau, our best ball playing defender, Mings our best stopper, Konsa our best interceptor. The idea that two left footed defenders can’t play together is a nonsense, the most important part of Mings is his head, the second most important is his mouth.
Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, City, Man U and Spurs all have bigger, stronger squads. If either or both of the last two find consistency in the second half of the season they should finish ahead of us for that reason. Newcastle, Forest, Brighton, Bournemouth have smaller, weaker squads and are just as inconsistent as us so on balance we should finish ahead of them. So 7th for us would reflect a good season for me (could be 5th if Spurs and United don't improve). 8th probably realistic unless we improve defensively. John I think you are deluded. “There are only 4/5 teams better than us when we play our best” How many games can you honestly say we have been at our best.! Hardly any. How many games in front of us are we likely to play at our best. Without any additions in January then not many. Too many key players have not been anywhere near their best. Bailey, McGinn, konsa, Watkins. Rogers started off the season well but is now struggling. Carlos and Pau lack pace and defensive awareness. With this team and current form we will only make top 10. UE will have noticed these points and realised that team strengthening is essential over next two windows. Big names may have to go to fund this. You do a good reporting job but sometimes your claret and blue eyes fail to see reality.

John the clue is in the name when deciding Mings Or Pau. DEFENDING. We have 4 midfield players ( Two wide two in-font of back line) these are the creative players. And why even mention both left footed, it’s irrelevant. BTW we defended better last year cos we played a hi line and had more offside decisions than any other team. Very few off sides now by comparison.

I know we are 7th, but they are hoping other teams fall away and we get consistent. But I've seen extremely eratic defending now since January, Ollie seems to need 7 shots to score one, and several members of the team seem to get injured every week. We just played with McGinn and Cash on the wings cause we have no one else. I can't see top 10 currently.
We definitely need to stop dropping points whatever happens. Pete on the trinity show pointed out both goals for forest had offsides not flagged in the buildup. The ref and linesman in this game missed or didn’t make decisions that should have, worst I’ve seen this season. We have also created and missed the most big chances in the league with Watkins missing nearly half on 15. That’s why we have -1 goal difference.

@Dani-jq6db it's not that simple though is it. We couldn't spend because of ffp and needed to sell. were just lacking moments of game changing quality attacking and just inept at the back at certain times,, players like carlos pau konsa martinez have a terrible habbit of passing out to a player who if the ball is not perfect or the touch slightly off then we can be punished,,, some of our passing out from the back is fantastic but there are times where it feels like the players go through the sort of set play motions without fully reading the game recently martinez has been a horror show at times but got away with it as did torres,, the high press semi low block that forest play we find quite difficult to create much in,, but even i was shocked how when they compressed us how feeble we were that last 10,,,

When you analyse the goals conceded against Forest, our 3 centre half's are all at the front post? This is not the first time they all lost their position for goals conceded! I'm tired of watching Cash's inability to defend and also turning his back on the ball spinning around like a ballerina! It's also clear that the players in front are not doing their jobs defending either!
We are to predictable now teams know how we play passing forwards & backwards isn’t good football in my opinion opposing teams can sit back & let you do all the work speed the game up from back to the front our football is boring.
Guys, the fact is, every time we have an opportunity to lay down a marker, we bottle it. Examples To go top last season, to clinch top 4 without relying on others, bottled that 3 times, then to go top 4 at the weekend, flopped again. Top 6 is going to be a struggle
John doesn`t think there`s five teams better than Villa. We`ll be at the halfway stage at the end of the month, i`ll say we`ll be 9th or 10th by then, at best.
Of the 4 centre half's, we have only one who is physical, can head, is cool under pressure, can organise vocally, and can't be intimidated. The need for a right back and right side player Diaby esq!
@pratcall understand what I'm saying rather than digging Mings out! The defence is bullied week in week out and you can't see that. I never said he was great but he has qualities the others don't have and vice versa! The truth is we still have players who are from the championship who are not of the level mentally or quality needed to sustain what Emery has started.

Unless someone really ups their game in the 2nd half of the season 5th is there for a number of teams to grab. I wouldn't be surprised if around 60 points got you 5th this season. It's not a great league overall this year.
were just lacking moments of game changing quality attacking and just inept at the back at certain times,, players like carlos pau konsa martinez have a terrible habbit of passing out to a player who if the ball is not perfect or the touch slightly off then we can be punished,,, some of our passing out from the back is fantastic but there are times where it feels like the players go through the sort of set play motions without fully reading the game
recently martinez has been a horror show at times but got away with it as did torres,, the high press semi low block that forest play we find quite difficult to create much in,, but even i was shocked how when they compressed us how feeble
we were that last 10,,,
If you accept that we put ourselves in trouble trying to pass out from the back maybe we shouldn’t be doing it?
@@lestrem11 think we are good at it and it is a risk but many times we get it through when we really should not,, but there are times it costs us,, saturday being a classic example so it comes down to players awareness
We can beat city if we play well………that is not going to happen……unfortunately.
city are a bit rubbish at the moment so Villa could play poorly and win.
@@pratcall Well, we are playing poorly but we only beat teams at the foot of the table at the moment.
We are to predictable now teams know how we play passing forwards & backwards isn’t good football in my opinion opposing teams can sit back & let you do all the work speed the game up from back to the front our football is boring.
No Dan you are not idiots. Stick to reporting facts not dreams
I think a we need 2/3 more transfer windows to strengthen in the areas needed
In 2024 alone we are 7th in the league table. Says it all
not that bad really then is it.
I think we are in the position that is our level tbh. I'd be happy to finish 7th
Guys, the fact is, every time we have an opportunity to lay down a marker, we bottle it. Examples
To go top last season, to clinch top 4 without relying on others, bottled that 3 times, then to go top 4 at the weekend, flopped again. Top 6 is going to be a struggle
John doesn`t think there`s five teams better than Villa. We`ll be at the halfway stage at the end of the month, i`ll say we`ll be 9th or 10th by then, at best.
City will destroy us and we never win at St. James park. I can see it being a very miserable festive period. Hope I'm wrong of course
Of the 4 centre half's, we have only one who is physical, can head, is cool under pressure, can organise vocally, and can't be intimidated. The need for a right back and right side player Diaby esq!
mings is great under pressure especially when he gives brugge a free penalty. absolute genuis hero that he is.
"We could get a result against City" - yes we could lose1-0! A result is the final score.
Can’t believe you’re still spouting this. In football commentary to ‘get a result’ means a win or a draw. It’s been that way forever
