Dammit man! Stop making better stuff than me!!!! Great tutorial man. Perhaps some key-bind footage showing your USE of those bindings for the next part of this tutorial set. I want to just give you my footage from now on so you can make my videos all epic too.
Haha Misconduct dude, honestly thank you!! And that sounds like a good idea! I was maybe going to do just the virtual setup as it's easier to visualise, but I'm not sure yet! Still a long way off starting it haha. And loool, man, you do some crazy shiz, you just need to add the music on top and hey presto! Just read your other comment too and thank you again man! Really really meant a lot. This took SO long to edit + I had to force myself to troll on a KOTH server for the intro clips xD AND CONGRATULATIONS ON 10K subs!!!! Freaking crazy achievement man- you should be very proud of yourself!
I still come back to this video everytime I install Arma 3 again and need to get my Keybinds again. I learned how to fly from scratch years ago from TOMMEH. Still to this day the best teacher for Arma 3 flying
I just completed the basic tutorial in VR training. I now have massive respect for anyone who can reliably pilot a helicopter. just stopping the helicopter where i wanted was a massive challange
literally switched over from joystick to these, took me an hour to get used to and i was already performing bleeds and j-hooks. thank you for the amazing tutorial/key-binds. :D
Pretty much the best Arma 3 chopper video this side of the galaxy. Thank you helichoppy sensei. When I reinstall windows on the gaming pc or what have you, first thing I do is visit this holy temple to dial in the best helichopper key-binds ever thought of..
I'm already feeling the difference after about an hour of practice. I can get in much sharper turns and generally have much more control over my craft. Now I just need to develop a feel for my craft's size and I'm golden.
Man oh man, that is music to my ears!! This took so long to put together, and that honestly made it so worthwhile to hear. I've had alot of people come on my streams etc and say how the video didn't help really, as they couldn't adapt to the controls. Fantastic news to hear it works for you man. Keep up the flying my friend!
Hey man! Thanks again. Little update if you're curious. I've been practicing almost non-stop for the past few days and it's been paying off quite a bit. Especially useful the X/C binds for pitch. I saved my crash landing aircraft twice in two days (still crashed more often than not, but at least it's not a 100% death rate the moment I lose my tail rotor anymore). I've been meaning to ask you something by the way. What utility keys do you use? Most notably, countermeasures? I went ahead and set up my countermeasures to KP5. Secondly, the controls mess about with the Jet controls a little bit. I edited those for now as I'm nowhere near flying jets, but, I thought it interesting to have your input on those as well. Do you happen to pilot Jets, too? If so, you use a similar set of controls for those, yes?
Hey! And that's what I like to hear. Non stop practise is what separates an okay pilot and an amazing one! The X/C is crucial, so I'm glad it's saved you a few times haha. As for your question about countermeasures, I use R for flares in both jets and helos. The controls do work with the jets, however because of the update you need to change around some of the settings. For example I use CTRL + C for radar toggle, Y for the jet targeting camera and left windows for the airbrake. All of these should work without any conflict with the helo controls. I would recommend sticking as close as possible to the helo controls as you do in jets, simply because of muscle memory, and how it will carry across more seamlessly than always using different bindings to fly jets and different bindings to fly helos.
I love the freedom and feeling of flying a helo. With that said, I totally suck at landing and turning close to ground. Your video has me rethinking how to fly. Thank you. To watch you fly is exciting and causes my old heart to pound.
In addition to substitutes for track IR: If you don't want your FOV maxed out all the time using FOV changer, you can press every time you get into an aircraft to toggle a higher FOV. As well, in cases where you want to look down before touch down, you can use in advance to shift your view downwards. However, in an emergency landing, it's unlikely you will have time to do this. Use to recenter your view.
Great video, nice to see you back on the RUclips. Gotta get back on it myself. Adding a note to what you said about controls. Guys don't get hung up on them. And don't fall into the joystick / realism trap. I have always flown with default A2 controls in A3 and A2, keyboard and mouse is also the best for flying in Arma games. The basic flight model simply wasn't made with joysticks in mind. The only real equipment that you should consider buying is trackIR like tommy said. TL;DR : controls most likely wont make you better and neither will track IR or any change of setup. Only practice will. Things like TrackIR only make it easier for already great pilots to become amazing.
Hey Holo man, it's been a while since I heard from you! I'd actually love to see your return. I thought your Arma commentaries were the bomb, would love to see more from you. And this: the joystick isn't everything. People want instant results, so buy joystick, spend cash = instant good piloting. This was kind of what I was joking about in my sellout intro lol. TRACK IR definitely is the best thing you CAN buy. Do what is comfortable, and shine with that. Practise practise practise. Great comment Holo man, and glad you enjoyed this one!
Dude! This helped me so much! I was able to get down the controls and do a relatively good j-hook landing in 2 days of practice! This is the fastest tutorial explanation I've had! Thank you!
Man thank YOU so much for the amazing comment! This is incredible and exactly why I make guides like this. Happy flying and don't forget to share this vid with others! :)
Seeing this and especially in regards to the quality of the content made me think u had over 1 million subs. i was disappointed to find out that you have less then 5k You deserve more attention, great content btw
Oh man this breaks my heart, everytime I read these kinda comments :( Makes me think RUclips algorithms are screwing me over lol. Thanks again friend, glad you enjoyed watching!
finally picked up ARMA3 this week, hadn't played since ARMA2 and I was pathetic then. Tried some of the heli lessons in VR using the default bindings and it was fairly hilarious. This is extremely inspiring. ARMA is a much bigger sandbox than I even imagined and I'm about to plug in your practice mission. (out of currency fixed-wing instrument pilot irl, would fly with me but not land me these days if you know what I mean... ) subbed!
I still recommend this video to anybody that is interested in becoming a pilot, and every single time i install arma again i go to this video and set up the controls
This may be 4 years old but it's the start of my helicopter career with helping out transporting my friends. It's a rocky start for sure but I'll get there
I wish i had this keyboard setup when i started to play Arma and wanted to become a helicopter pilot. I love this keyboard setup, thanks for sharing it!
At first it was a rocky start for me, but after having a few hundred hours of Arma 3 and most of it just flying, these controls truly do pay off. Everyone who ask me how I learned I always link them this video. By far this video has helped me become a pretty good pilot. Anyone who is also starting again like he said practice makes perfect and keep trying.
Thank you for being a living testament to sticking out these controls! They really do work! A lot of people have been very sceptical about whether or not they work.
These are great man, I'm playing the game again in 2020 with my updated PC that can handle the game. Now it runs much better it's like a fresh game to be honest, never got into heli's last time around but I'm loving them now and these vids are great cheers brother! Have a new sub! and stay safe!
Thank you so much man, I really appreciate you passing on your success story as it motivates me to make future videos like this! Sorry for the really slow reply btw haha.
I learned from my experience, that the key for being a great pilot is blasting those 60's rock songs from the vietnam war through the voice chat while flying.
Good video and I'm glad your settings work so well for you. Personally I'll stick to my HOTAS Warthog and Thrustmaster pedals as the immersion I achieve with them makes the whole experience more fun for me and once you get used to the setup you can actually do some pretty cool stuff with it.
Hey cheers MrWiggo! It's nice to hear an alternative perspective, I've been really tempted to get into HOTAS lately but can't because I'm always on the move. I wish you all the best with your flying and thank you for sharing this!
Cheers Evil my friend, glad you can see the work that went into editing this one!! And you could always try the no-track IR substitute, would deffo be down to play with you if you did!
Good shit. I've stuck with W and S for cyclic forwards and backwards but moved my raise and lower to C and X, much less finger Yoga that way. You're right, mouse is much easier than a joystick in ArmA, I've been trying with the stick for ages and could never get it quite right. I think I'll leave the stick for other flight sims.
I use an rc transmitter (radiomaster tx16s) and it is godly. Its gimbals have the speed of keyboard, and the precision and smoothness of a hotas. Comming from race drones using a rc transmitter was a logical option.
I personally love helos, one of the main things I wanted to do with my buddies was be their pilot, I believe Im decent at RSW helis, but then again they already had pilots and when I can't find servers its hard to be shot down by bots, and I believe that Ill go from decent to absolute shit, and I highly appreciate this from you.
Hello Tommeh. I saw your video last year. I didn't think much of it as I had not made enough money to keep buying minibrds. Now I have built a decent amount of 77k. That should be enough for 1 week
Thank you so much friend, the next one will be up very very soon you'll be pleased to hear! Also upped the production quality a bit. Again, thank you for commenting. Really keeps me motivated to edit up the next one Ahmalag man!
Ahmalag, thank you as always man. Keeps my motivational tanks filled up to push the next one out. You'll be pleased to hear the new episode will be out before Xmas, and then afterwards, we'll be looking at Pawneeees! :P Thank you again for such a lovely comment!
Three wide angle (~100 deg) transmitting IR diode. Three resistors 180ohm. Any L shaped material as base. PS 3 eye cam with any IR (800-940nm) filter from aliexpress.com mounted on it. No need to remove IR filter in camera. Opentrack as software. Works perfectly. VTNHX.

Thanks A LOT for this video! Going to set my bindings now! Also, just bought the Track IR thanks to your review of what it does! :) I wish it would work on Squad! :P
Great video. I learnt a lot. Although personally I will stick to my hotas setup as I find it easier. Been using it for some time now so going back to mouse and keyboard for flight just seems strange to me.
Thanks so much Trex! Really glad this video served its purpose. Good to hear, if you've heard of 104th Maverick, he's an excellent joystick pilot and he gets on just fine with his setup haha. Good luck flying mate!
So awesome to read this comment, face lit up haha. Put a lot of time into this one, so it's nice to see you enjoyed the commentary and graphics!! Really means the world. Next one should be up shortly! :-)
CallMehTOMMEH Of course. I can fly just fine, but landing in tight spaces is so risky just because I cannot look around fast enough using my hat switch.
Hmm, maybe the FOV option could work for you until you get a TRACK IR. I mean it is dooable, you just have to be very spatially aware of your helo when going for tight LZ's.
Can't say I agree with you on the joystick part, I got one despite what you said and it improved my landings, not saying it will be the same for everyone but I don't think people should discount one so soon. However using a thrust controller is not good for helicopters in arma 3
it will also help you aim if you keep your camera zoomed out, believe it or not. Beginners will think zooming in will help, but zooming in makes you spend too much time "fine-tuning" your aim. Camera zoom is only good for target acquisition, if you're on your own or your ground team doesn't have smoke.
Great video as always, although I was wondering what your FOV settings are? I downloaded the set up and changed it to the recommended but I still would like a broader view of the cockpit.
Thanks man! My FOV settings are: fovTop=0.88999999; fovLeft=1.58; However you can change the FOV from default with the program by entering 100 or something in that range.
Super random but I just recently decided to come back here because of the popularity of Battlebit. Was flying a little bird and wondering why it just didn’t feel right, then realized all of a sudden that it’s because I wasn’t using these keybinds! I’d used them all the time in Arma 3 before.
Any tips for using a joystick with twist yaw and a throttle quadrant? I primarily fly fixed wing aircraft in XPlane and I have done some heli-ops in the AW139/Bell 409 in XPlane but no military. I have an E3D Pro and Saitek/Logitech throttle quadrant.
after a few years real world in helos 40 years ago and 20 years of home flight sims, I was a bit skeptical, but helos in Arma 3 really are quite good. My only problem with them - they might be a bit too good in Arma 3. You can do things with them that don't yet seem quite mechanically or aerodynamically possible in real world. Try a flight sim with difficulty set to max or near max, and you get a far better idea of what the limitations are.
Amazing video, I'm not rolling in cash, so I though I'd just try the FOV changer, until I came to the gruesome realization that Armaholic has been down for multiple months.. Such a shame..
Thank you mate if you need a mirror for the FOV changer, let me know as I reuploaded it to Mediafire so people can still access it. Sorry for the really slow reply btw haha. :)
I am not gonna use those keybinds because for some reason, some binds are shared with fixed-wing aircraft. And I like having WASD bound to rolling and pulling up/down respectively. I would use them if these binds werent shared with fixed wing.
I figured something out!!! I'd really really appreciate a pin for the viewer's sake, but whatever: TL;DR: Add Z to your cyclic backward, trust me. Use it when landing going right with an engine failure. So when landing due to engine failure my most common button presses using these keybinds are ASX, Tail left, engine cyclic down, nose up, right? Now, you said you almost always went left when landing like this, and I used to too, till I actually changed it, so the sling mechanic isn't 2xZ, I rebound that for my personal use (to 2xG if you're wondering) and added Z to cyclic backward, so now Z AND X both tilt the Heli up making it MUCH less awkward to do right side landings with an engine failure, ASX is very natural, DSX is not, DSZ on the other hand, very much so is, as it mimics the same "L" shape you do with your fingers, without any finger overlap. I hope this helps you as much as it helps me!!
Dammit man! Stop making better stuff than me!!!!
Great tutorial man. Perhaps some key-bind footage showing your USE of those bindings for the next part of this tutorial set.
I want to just give you my footage from now on so you can make my videos all epic too.
what video editing software are you using? This is really well done.
Haha Misconduct dude, honestly thank you!! And that sounds like a good idea! I was maybe going to do just the virtual setup as it's easier to visualise, but I'm not sure yet! Still a long way off starting it haha.

How did u do it?
I agree he makes it look so easy
It’s really not hard, you’re just bad. Skill issue. 🥱
Its still easier than the VTOLs
2 years ago and im still watching to learn to fly. KEEP it up
Dude that's so awesome, thanks so much. Lovely to hear this
@@CallMehTOMMEH still reacting to this video after 2 years lol
TRY 3
Using you’re set up now getting better at flying because of it, landing still needs work xD

lets just take some time to appreciate that landing at 8:49 Absolutely beautiful

using your keybindings, im already doing better within 10 minutes than hours practicing with the defaults
Don't even fly and I can tell you the default binds suck.
I stopped playing Arma 2 years ago but now I will reinstall and learn to fly
Met him on NMD sandbox! Pretty cool dude, helped me alot
Just finally started flying the helis today lol. It’s thought for sure but in all games I have always loved flying so I’m gonna get better at it

Damn man, learning how to fly LAATs for star wars ops and this works just as well,I got way better with these keybinds and tips lol, thanks so much
I played someone like you in an Asian Server, and he flies like you, I don't know if it's you or just some fan. *He's so good!*
This is honestly one of the best tutorials I've ever seen in youtube gaming

i literally took these controls 2 days ago and i am a much better pilot thanks man
My pleasure dude! Big love
Everything about that video was awesome! Thanks for your tutorial and omg nice flying mate!
Thanks so much dude, means alot!
Just came to see the sick flying
I'm at the point where I don't use auto hover but damn dude you're on a different level
Haha man stahp, I'm not that great, compared to Misconduct or 104th Maverick, those guys are on crack and adderal haha

Gear Up: Also G
I do not have piano fingers, to press C and Q at the same time, while looking around with my mouse, and holding Cap Lock to talk to the team in the heli...
This is the shit Tommeh! Excellent work, great advice, smooth commentary, awesome visuals! Fantastic job looking forward to next one.
So awesome to read this comment, face lit up haha. Put a lot of time into this one, so it's nice to see you enjoyed the commentary and graphics!! Really means the world.
Next one should be up shortly! :-)
I fly like you with a joystick. You really make me jealous.
Haha, don't sweat it man. TRACK IR is the next upgrade for you then? :P
CallMehTOMMEH
Of course. I can fly just fine, but landing in tight spaces is so risky just because I cannot look around fast enough using my hat switch.
Hmm, maybe the FOV option could work for you until you get a TRACK IR. I mean it is dooable, you just have to be very spatially aware of your helo when going for tight LZ's.
yeah, I'm going to have to.
Pigeonhead same
Wow man, you made me into a pro helicopter pilot now!
MrTaliGaming my pleasure man, glad it helped you out! :-)
great video Tommeh, just starting heli flying in Arma 3 ill see how it goes. thanks for the tips from fellow brit
Thanks SteamController mate!! Ayy a fellow Brit, good show old chap. I wish you all the best with your flying and thank YOU for watching.
You got yourself a sub, mate! Great content!
Aw music to my ears matey, really means a lot. Took so long to edit/put together, so nice to see people are enjoying it!
I am still playing arma after two years after this was posted
As am I :-) It's a great game still
Can't say I agree with you on the joystick part, I got one despite what you said and it improved my landings, not saying it will be the same for everyone but I don't think people should discount one so soon. However using a thrust controller is not good for helicopters in arma 3
That's fair enough. I know plenty who do really well with joysticks (101st Maverick being one good example).
still, watch this in 2021.. Great help for flying
Arma 3 still going strong 5 years later :)
Thank you very much for your video. I will try your bindings. I just bought the eye x tracker but cannot get it to work in Arma 3.
Cheers John! Good luck with the bindings, I hope they work out for you!
it will also help you aim if you keep your camera zoomed out, believe it or not.
Thanks man! My FOV settings are: fovTop=0.88999999;
fovLeft=1.58; However you can change the FOV from default with the program by entering 100 or something in that range.
Cn you give me a short explanation, since the Website isnt wprking anymore @@CallMehTOMMEH
"still some juice in arma 3" me watching this in 2020
2020/21 crew lol
@@CallMehTOMMEH Gonna be 2035 when arma 4 is out lol
I got these keybinds from my friend, he shot out my backrotor on my 2nd flight with the new controls. I barely noticed he had done it.
Is that a good or bad thing lol?
This video was very helpful and your a insane pilot thanks !!
Thank you Ryan!! Much appreciated
Super random but I just recently decided to come back here because of the popularity of Battlebit. Was flying a little bird and wondering why it just didn’t feel right, then realized all of a sudden that it’s because I wasn’t using these keybinds! I’d used them all the time in Arma 3 before.
Awesome video! will be watching the playlist. Although The FOV changer corrupted the game and it couldn't launch...I'll have to figure that out
What was the FOV you used for this? And sick video mate i loved it.
I cant believe this video has only 250k views ive warched this video atleast 4 times!!!
Man that's so kind of you! I'm not sure why this video has captivated people so much but I'm glad it is being enjoyed by all :-)
Once you go HOTAS, you'll never go back!
Oh dear, the puns are stronk in this one... xD
I'll stick with auto hover, thanks
Love you Archi babe

This is very true, but then again it is a game with a degree of arcadey-flex in it.
amazing landing at 8:57
You've given me hope that I might be able to land a helicopter... more than one time only...
Haha, keep at it brother. Happy flying!
With your vids I learn how to fly I fly super low and super fast but third person
Fantastic news Lucas, happy flying!
Which key do you use for countermeassures?
Thanks bro this should help me. On my first flight I died cos didn't know how to slow it down on landing 🤣
No worries mate, hope the flying is going well! :)
How do you slow down so quickly? I just do not understand.
I don't own Arma 3 yet, but I'm watching this in case I finally buy it, and want to fly the helicopters(mainly the Hummingbird tho)
Question: I already put all the key bind but in the heli I still just can look around and cant move the heli with the mouse. How to fix this ?
i'm not a bad pilot. i can do quick combat landings. but i might wanna try your settings.
Give them a go man, let me know how they go for you!
-Tommeh
I really feel bad now that I have watched your pro flying.. yesterday I crashed a big helicopter with 10 people in it... nice vid
Dude don't sweat it. I've done it and I still do it. Don't let it get in the way of your love of flying!
I am not gonna use those keybinds because for some reason, some binds are shared with fixed-wing aircraft. And I like having WASD bound to rolling and pulling up/down respectively. I would use them if these binds werent shared with fixed wing.
Very cool video, really inspiring :)
Thank you Mitze, glad you liked it!!
WOW! That's all can say! WOW! WOW!
2023 ARMA 3 !!! STILL GOING STRONG
Great video, just subscribed
I bought track IR 5, but I'm really struggling and overwhelmed to get it working correctly.
I figured something out!!! I'd really really appreciate a pin for the viewer's sake, but whatever:
TL;DR: Add Z to your cyclic backward, trust me.
Great point! I will heart in case others come across this too. Thank you Caleb!
