Great tips! I often psych myself out of drawing; I forget that it’s supposed to be enjoyable 😅 I have characters that I need to have better shorthand for, so I appreciated this video!
Love this, especially the “remember to have fun” thing. As soon as you took away the hair wisp I was like ‘nooo!! That’s fun!! Don’t take it away!!’ And then you didn’t haha! I’d important to be efficient and studied.. but it’s equally important to have fun :) remember why you’re drawing in the first olace
Thanks for posting this - I've mostly drawn in my shorthand sketches for the past few years and began developing this weird fear of complacency of not being able to commit to the level of detail I used to do more regularly in the past, so it's nice to hear someone with professional experience explain the advantages and values of gestural minimalism for a change.
This is such a huge help for me. I love to make expressive, character driven art. and I get stuck between polish and details but I have since 10 years ago have always loved making simple drawings and it is such fun to me. always was and still is. I get so stressed about learning anatomy before I can make anything I want to make or learning fundamentals of drawing like 3D and perspective, but I am not sure for what I now identify as an aspiring story artist (much like you!) I want to know what to focus on! Thank you so much again for this video! You are definitely becoming an inspiration to me! I love your art style and how loose and expressive it is!
Nice video! It covered a lot of really great points of stylization when you need to get something done quick. I especially relate to spending those extra few seconds to add an extra tuft of hair on a character just to enjoy the process. I think your best work comes out when you’re engaged in small moments like that.
Thanks for this! I always take extra time with the expressions in my boards but sometimes it can get to the point where I worry over individual lines too much. Lately I've been trying to construct expressions with more gesture in mind, using only the minimum amount of lines to communicate the idea. I tell myself can always add more detail in cleans as long as I have the essence of the expression down 😊
This is so sick! I've always kind of wanted to be part of the animation industry, be it as a storyboard artist or something else, and this video's been a great glimpse into that world. Had a stupid smile of awe plastered across my face this entire video. This is so cool. Thanks for making this video!
I love this, but it's pretty difficult. I start getting tense, and i can't get a good face without doing the whole, circle, cross, chin, and structures process it's so hard
And if you're taking suggestions for new videos, could you maybe make one in "how to make a sketch presentable" or "what degree of completion/detailing/refinement makes something a sketch" or just how to make a drawing readable and clean enough without it having to be a full piece. As an amateur I feel like my sketches are kinda hard to read 😅
I honestly don’t know much(which is why I am watching this😂) BUT that hair wisp seems so much a part of that character’s gesture and identity🤷🏻♀️ it makes sense to my why you would include it
This is super brilliant! Wish I'd seen this 3 years ago when I started my short film! Right now I've finally learned to let go of "perfect storyboards" and loosen up! I'm taking a toooon of inspiration from how Hayao Miyazaki does his!
I tend to fall down the rabbit hole of overdetailing in my art, especially when it comes to drawing clothes and hair 😅 this video is pretty helpful! I defo want to draw more loose and gestural in my comics more but i also worry that i'll end up drawing the characters off model 🤔 do you have tips for that?
Hi! Your recent video was cool and honestly I wanted to comment to you but I was afraid you won't respond (because you made videos which were in along time ago, so that's why and I wanted to ask you a one question thats just it) I knew about your channel and watched your videos for awhile now which you make good ones and I wish you continue making more videos like these including two videos I really like from yours! A video you once talked about your experience in life drawing which was cool plus there was something you said that the importance of life drawing in general is that you are trying to draw the spirit of an object or anything which is in front of you but life drawing classes didn't focus much on which they focus more on anatomy and the correct portions 😅 (proof from your story that they didn't like that) And the other video was to not draw in your comfort zone which getting used to draw this thing but don't draw the things you are afraid of or not able to draw it which unfortunately it might make a lot of problems, which I was afraid if I am actually doing that But truly the videos you make are good additionally they push people to move forward and correcting there way😊 I actually want to ask "if I want to send you a sketch or comic to check if there is anything odd how can I do that?" Honestly when you made a video seeing other people's sketches I honestly I wanted mine to be checked so... Please tell me how can I send you any sketches or any draws of mine to jude according to your professional art experience And I love your art style and it was a pleasure that I finally comment on one of your recent videos! Ok , I hope you have a good day 😊
Lol i got the exact opposite - got yelled at for not boarding on model, so i had to learn how to draw the character style of the show - i wasn't allowed to use 'my style'.
Hey so I have a question. I’m an artist. And every time I draw a character the first time it looks good. But the second time I draw it, or try to draw it in the same way it comes out different. What should I do?
“Drawing shorthand” love that term, never knew it had a name.
Great tips! I often psych myself out of drawing; I forget that it’s supposed to be enjoyable 😅 I have characters that I need to have better shorthand for, so I appreciated this video!

Great to hear that fun should be apart of your process, that's the whole reason we all started drawing
Thank you for making this, I’ve been trying to learn to animate and always had trouble with simplifying things down. This was clear and concise!

the part about po and how to go about simplying detail is really useful, great advice 🤗

You have a neat art style, it's super cute.

I still wanna be able to draw and not feel rush.
I just gotta work on pacing myself and not focus on rushing

This was so helpful!
I usually give my hand a break from the pain of drawing every day. but I had to stop drawing for a while, even if I wanted to draw some more.

what application do you use to make animatics usually?
For these videos. I draw it out on photoshop and then time it in premier. An easier way would be just to work in storyboard pro!
this was great
