Generally, you just crash so many thousands of times that you learn how to not get hurt. The key is that you start small and progress slowly. The techniques for big jumps are the same as the techniques for small jumps. If you build up fitness, confidence and skill for long enough, you eventually start doing really big things without realizing how big they are. It's like Alex Honnold says, if you're suddenly experiencing an adrenaline rush, it's because something has already gone catastrophically wrong.

These guys have literally spent more time in the air on their mountain bikes than regular everyday mountain bikers have spent with their wheels on the ground. And the time they are in the air is probably 10 or 15 percent of the total time they are riding. If you ask them how they can ride 50+mph and jump 80+ feet with relative ease, they're going to tell you it's all about the time and the slow grinding progression from dropping off curbs, to dropping off boulders, to dropping off cliffs. Would they be where they are without crash pads? No, absolutely not. Are the crash pads the thing that made them the best? No, absolutely not.

Environment etc etc. But some people just had that edge, that x-factor I guess they call it. Me I was too tall and big amongst other things. Though it served me well in different endeavours. Maybe we all just have different things were supposed to be good at or whatever. Some great. ))
