My opinion about that is, if you want to join the guard, or any branch of service you have to learn to get along with all people off all cultural backgrounds and races. I was in the National Guard for 15 years. I was medically retired. I did two combat tours in Iraq 2004-2005 and 2009-2010. I was a 92A. I was a SAMS-E Clerk attached to a armor company. I also was in the Technician program as a production controller. As you said National Guard has its advantages just like active duty. Key thing to remember we are one team. Retired SGT
My dad did 22 years of active duty Army and accomplished everything he wanted to in life. He had a family and only had to leave us for 3 years his whole military career which is fairly good. Retired at a somewhat young age. We have a nice house and do just about whatever we want to. Active has its advantages along with disadvantages. I did 6 yrs of Active Army and I knew damn well I wasn't doing 20 of that bullshit lol. But speak of that military I'm in the reserves and I work for my local VA hospital plus I'm 3 miles from an Army Post... Bitch you guess it I'm in Fayetteville/Fort-Bragg making bank. I finish my degree while in now I work S.I.S. department. I make twice as much as I did in the Active duty side. I workout when ever the fuck I feel like it and often times I get 2 three day weekends in a month. I kind of have to disagree with S.O.B., I know plenty of soldier that stuck with the active duty side because they had a family. The family benefits are totally free and your check is guaranteed decent amount. Compared to being a civilian and kissing employers asses for a job. Getting out of the active military is easier being single. Most times the dependent (Wife) don't want you to get out the Army because she can't play housewife anymore (She has to get off her butt and help financially support). I say the best route is to bust your ass an finish at least a 2yr degree before deciding to go Guard or Army Reserves unless you got shit in control before getting out. Most motherfuckers don't have degree in the guard and reserves either. The moral of the story don't get a chick pregnant while on Active duty if you know your ass is not staying in, because she will walk out on your ass and find another military sucka and put your dumb ass on child support. I've seen that shit too many times
+Mista Mista honestly if you join the guard you can qualify for any benefits that the state offers as well as government benefits. Active duty pay isn't really much at all so you're better off with either reserve or guard. I feel guard is better especially now because unless you live in an area were natural disasters occur frequently you're like to be deployed overseas than stateside. but it all depends on different factors.

Honestly it depends what you want. If you want to live in one place and go to school obviously choose the guard. If you want to constantly train go to schools and be ready to deploy a lot go active. Both have their pros and cons.

This was in the thick of the conflicts in the Middle East, so most guard units (mainly combat arms units) are in a unique position of being with civilian soldiers who are actually trained up and combat veterans. It is a unique time to be in the guard due to the type of experience a lot of guard soldiers have.
I've scrambled around on RUclips looking to find experiences on Joining the National Guard at an older age. Wanted to see if you had any stories or advises on older recruits joining in the Guard.
I went through BCT at 26 and just commissioned as a 2LT in the guard. If you have a degree and are older, I would recommend going in as an officer either active or through a reserve component. I also recommend you shop around and find the best deal you can for enlisting. Only the NG offered me the SLRP and an 09S (officer candidate) slot which was a huge advantage over the deals that active army and reserves were offering at the time. I really worked out well because I get most my financial benefits (401k and stock options) through my civilian employer and personal benefits (insurance) through the guard. I will say that OCS in the guard sucked big time, but it didn't interfere with my civilian life too badly. That being said I fully anticipate a day I might need to go away for a year or longer and I've made peace with that.
They do, but I couldn't slate off the 2 full time months for it. If you do go that route you better factor in a few weeks of recovery time after because it is no joke. The best way to get it if you can is federal. They are done by 5, weekends off, and over in 3 months. NG OCS sucks.

Do you know how strict they are about health requirements? I was disqualified from joining the Air Force due to High Uric Acid levels in my blood, and now that I'm looking to try joining again it seems like this problem is going to persist for me. Have to get a blood test in a month. Thing is. I'm tired of waiting. I tried joining two years ago and this year I'll be turning 23. I just feel like I need to take what I can get and it seems like all these full time branches don't want me.
All I hear is excuses. I currently have 6 years of active duty and counting. Married with 3 kids. Been deployed stationed all over the world. Joined with no college and now working on my third associates degree for giggles, and still have a lot of time to enjoy life with my family. The only person the kept me from finally making my E5 was myself, not college, not my leadership, but myself. I am not a high speed soldier. I just decided to man up and stop blaming everyone else why I wasn't getting promoted. It's actually really easy to get promoted. Be in the right place at the right time and do your job. No one is perfect.

I do see how you could think that especially if you didnt make 5 five before you got out. I made E-5 in 3 years with no degree. I did all correspondence courses, almost max my pt, and shot well and its all it took to make 5. If you have shitty leaders you will think that way but if you have a good leader your outlook can be completely different.
i got a question. i know that they say you do 2 days out of the month and 2 weeks out of the year but what if i want to do more then that. what if i want to go help with things or go deploy to another country to do something there. can i do this is it possible and if so then is it easy to request to do or is it hard to do jobs with the national guard

But let me just ask just for an idea. As a 68w, How do I get paid? Also, will I be in combat 1st? Am I the 1st to fight the enemies who shoot those I'm forced to save later? Or is it that I fight alongside them and after the exchange of attacks, I end up as a non-casualty then I proceed to save? How does the pay differ from alternative MOS? And how does the chances of dying differ?
I'm NG and it's cool while im in school but i want active duty after i graduate. I'm married we're both NG tho so we get the whole soldier thing. Hearing how political promotions are for enlisted furthers encourages me to go active but I have been thinking about being a linguist after my ETS. That's solely enlisted. Very true, and in that amount of time, if you stay straight it looks very good on your resume and personal background record. Too many of these young guys going guard or reserves go back to the same shitty jobs or video games that they were doing before they left. The GI BILL alone for active duty is worth staying in for 4/5 years. The Govt pays you a livable wage on top of covering all tuition costs. That is better than any Reserve or NG program can give you if you're looking to be a full time student.

How are you making 2400 a month in the National Guard? You just said that you only get a 3rd of that amount and 2400 a month is alot of money for free housing and food.

Plus, I do honor guard on within the organization and that helps me with pay. But if I were to be active, just multiply 112 x 30 days x 12 months. That's just my base pay. The extra stuff like cola, bah, etc would determine on my location and the duty that I'm performing.

Is the 2400 all from doing part time honor guard or your using your post 911 GI bill which was award to you when you join active-duty-regular-army? SMH you should of start your family in the regular army and retire there. Your pay would be a lot more monthly(including bah) and the retirement system is better. If you don't understand that guard has different retirement system then the regular army. "But if I were to be active, just multiply 112 x 30 days" Regular-army you'll Receive retirement pay at age 38 (after doing 20yrs of service) with half your base pay 3360/2. The key word is Receive Pay at age 38 at $1680 a month till your decease. National Guard retirement pay is base on points system. You could retire after 20yrs in service but your receive pay will be at age 65. Since you did the part time job the system will calculate part time retirement. And if you can't figure the pay then its safe to say your drill pay money is your retirement pay at age 65
wpaia you're half wrong. It's 60 years old subtract from active years. If you have any active years you can subtract that off your 60. If you did 6 active years like I did, it will be 54 years old that I will be able to draw out my retirement. If you go full national guard, no active years, then yes, 60 years old it is. Second of all, being active duty isn't my priority. To some people, money is everything to them. No I'm not using all of my GI bill, only for classes that are a bit more expensive or when I have run out of TA for the year, I will be using my 9/11. The rest will go to my wife for her to go back to school when she's in her undergrad portion of her school. Everyone else has different goals in life, don't try to assume what's best for me or my family. Third, majority of families are torn apart from active service years. I wouldn't do it to my family if I can prevent it. I worked damn near 14-16 hours a day in Active Duty and that was as a specialist/ E4. As an NCO, my entire dedication would be to the Army and not to my family. I've seen so many families destroyed by the system as spouses go through divorce, adultery, and children ended up in abusive relationship because parents become abusive through the torment. Not all families but plenty of them. Fourth, I am retiring with 20 years in the National Guard and I will receive majority of my benefits through it. The only difference is that I won't be able to pull retirement at 38 years old but I am AOK. 38 is fairly young and I still want to travel and teach around that time frame. You can't do shit in active duty if you're always in operation. Can't go to school or shit. How in the fuck am I suppose to get my degree on 14 hour shifts? NO ONE CAN unless you're an admin bitch or you already came in with a degree. You can't even get promoted without one these days anyways because everyone has a degree coming into the Army. Even if I waited to get out the Army, there's no chance that I will even make it to 38 in one piece. 38 going to college doesn't sound bad but why would I go when I'm 38? With all the deployments, yes deployments, it's still possible for me to go overseas and there's no hell I will be able to go to college for sure then. You make it sound easy and dumb but this service is not easy. You should already know that for a fact.
I understand that you prefer the road that gives you lot less money in the long run because your priority is your family. Yeah National Guard stays in the US. Actually you stay in your home state lol. The reason why I chose Guard over active-I'm 17 and just joined a week ago after a very lengthy debate between Active, Guard and the Marines I choose Guard to stay close to my loved ones. But I digress-yes you can go to college in the Guard. Idk what state you're in but here in Louisiana college is completely free for Guard members. For medical I'd recommend 68Whiskey (combat medic) you'll get EMT-B in AIT and the practice will help you be above your peers in college. Hope I helped.

I'd go either reserves or guard if you want to complete your degree soon. A lot of time they offer state tuition assistance and the schools themselves offer grants. You can also go active too and go to school, but you will have a more difficult time and it's going to feel really strange for you to be a 27 year old private. Most people in your age group are probably around E-5 or E-6 because they joined when they were 18 and have some time in.

It’s called reserve officer training corse only because when your studying you can’t be deployed. It’s called an educational delay. Your being reserved from deployments and job placement because you are in freaking college and it’s impossible to do both. Doing the split option training program. Wish me luck. So my current situation is that I have already signed a 8 year contract with the army national guard and I leave for BCT and AIT in approximately 1 week from today and I'm 18 btw. In the back of my mind I feel like I have made a mistake because yes I would like to go to college and start accomplishing my goals but I feel like I'm a bit to young for that right now at least. Right now I feel like Jason said I don't have anything else better to do than be a soldier I don't really care for being a civilian soldier right now or in the coming years for that matter. Or is it that I fight alongside them and after the exchange of attacks, I end up as a non-casualty then I proceed to save? How does the pay differ from alternative MOS? And how does the chances of dying differ?

I'm NG and it's cool while im in school but i want active duty after i graduate. I'm married we're both NG tho so we get the whole soldier thing. Hearing how political promotions are for enlisted furthers encourages me to go active but I have been thinking about being a linguist after my ETS. That's solely enlisted. I plan to have a bachelor's at least and hopefully a master's too by that time. What other problems could i run into with promotions on the enlisted side?

Very true, and in that amount of time, if you stay straight it looks very good on your resume and personal background record.
Too many of these young guys going guard or reserves go back to the same shitty jobs or video games that they were doing before they left. The GI BILL alone for active duty is worth staying in for 4/5 years. The Govt pays you a livable wage on top of covering all tuition costs. That is better than any Reserve or NG program can give you if you're looking to be a full time student.

How are you making 2400 a month in the National Guard? You just said that you only get a 3rd of that amount and 2400 a month is alot of money for free housing and food.

Plus, I do honor guard on within the organization and that helps me with pay. But if I were to be active, just multiply 112 x 30 days x 12 months. That's just my base pay. SMH you should of start your family in the regular army and retire there. Your pay would be a lot more monthly(including bah) and the retirement system is better.

Regular-army you'll Receive retirement pay at age 38 (after doing 20yrs of service) with half your base pay 3360/2. The key word is Receive Pay at age 38 at $1680 a month till your decease.
National Guard retirement pay is base on points system. You could retire after 20yrs in service but your receive pay will be at age 65. Since you did the part time job the system will calculate part time retirement. And if you can't figure the pay then its safe to say your drill pay money is your retirement pay at age 65
wpaia you're half wrong. It's 60 years old subtract from active years. If you have any active years you can subtract that off your 60. If you did 6 active years like I did, it will be 54 years old that I will be able to draw out my retirement. If you go full national guard, no active years, then yes, 60 years old it is.
Second of all, being active duty isn't my priority. To some people, money is everything to them. No I'm not using all of my GI bill, only for classes that are a bit more expensive or when I have run out of TA for the year, I will be using my 9/11. The rest will go to my wife for her to go back to school when she's in her undergrad portion of her school. Everyone else has different goals in life, don't try to assume what's best for me or my family.
Third, majority of families are torn apart from active service years. I wouldn't do it to my family if I can prevent it. I worked damn near 14-16 hours a day in Active Duty and that was as a specialist/ E4. As an NCO, my entire dedication would be to the Army and not to my family. I've seen so many families destroyed by the system as spouses go through divorce, adultery, and children ended up in abusive relationship because parents become abusive through the torment. Not all families but plenty of them.
Fourth, I am retiring with 20 years in the National Guard and I will receive majority of my benefits through it. The only difference is that I won't be able to pull retirement at 38 years old but I am AOK. 38 is fairly young and I still want to travel and teach around that time frame. You can't do shit in active duty if you're always in operation. Can't go to school or shit. How in the fuck am I suppose to get my degree on 14 hour shifts? NO ONE CAN unless you're an admin bitch or you already came in with a degree. You can't even get promoted without one these days anyways because everyone has a degree coming into the Army. Even if I waited to get out the Army, there's no chance that I will even make it to 38 in one piece. 38 going to college doesn't sound bad but why would I go when I'm 38? With all the deployments, yes deployments, it's still possible for me to go overseas and there's no hell I will be able to go to college for sure then. You make it sound easy and dumb but this service is not easy. You should already know that for a fact.
I understand that you prefer the road that gives you lot less money in the long run because your priority is your family. Money isn't everything but family is and as long as your happy then nothing else matters. There is always something for everybody. Yeah National Guard stays in the US. Actually you stay in your home state lol. The reason why I chose Guard over active-I'm 17 and just joined a week ago after a very lengthy debate between Active, Guard and the Marines I choose Guard to stay close to my loved ones. But I digress-yes you can go to college in the Guard. Idk what state you're in but here in Louisiana college is completely free for Guard members. For medical I'd recommend 68Whiskey (combat medic) you'll get EMT-B in AIT and the practice will help you be above your peers in college. Hope I helped.

I'd go either reserves or guard if you want to complete your degree soon. A lot of time they offer state tuition assistance and the schools themselves offer grants. You can also go active too and go to school, but you will have a more difficult time and it's going to feel really strange for you to be a 27 year old private. Most people in your age group are probably around E-5 or E-6 because they joined when they were 18 and have some time in.

Hey people of RUclips so I'm pretty sure I got someone who can help me out right now. So my current situation is that I have already signed a 8 year contract with the army national guard and I leave for BCT and AIT in approximately 1 week from today and I'm 18 btw. In the back of my mind I feel like I have made a mistake because yes I would like to go to college and start accomplishing my goals but I feel like I'm a bit to young for that right now at least. Right now I feel like Jason said I don't have anything else better to do than be a soldier I don't really care for being a civilian soldier right now or in the coming years for that matter.
