  • Clarice (FY 2021) and I (FY 2020) both applied for the Navy Nurse Candidate Program and got accepted! We both think it's difficult to find videos on RUclips discussing what the program actually is and what the application process is like so we decided to make this.

But I some questions to clear up, do you apply to a regular university for your BSN and then afterwards apply to NCP? Or does the university have to have to have a specific program in order to qualify for NCP?

    Great video! This video will be really helpful to many people who are thinking about joining the Navy after graduating. I know I would have benefitted from seeing this video before applying for the NCP. But by any chance, especially because students thinking about applying for the program may be curious, does the Navy also cover loans for students after graduation or is that still the students responsibility after graduation?

    • @Klarissedoeslife
      @Klarissedoeslife  4 года назад

      Thanks! I just asked my recruiter and this is what he said:
      After a few years in the Navy you may be eligible for a retention bonus or loan repayment depending on what specialty you go into. If you make 10 years of minimum payments while working for a non-profit, government, military, etc., then they’ll forgive the rest of the loans so definitely something to think about. In the meantime, look into the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program: studentaid.gov/manage-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/public-service

I have completed all of my undergrad core classes (math, English, language, etc) but won't be able to take any in person classes for nursing until I get out due to the work schedule. Do you know of any other things, other than volunteer hours, I can do NOW to help my chances later? Not really happy with my current job so would really like to fast track my way into the nursing field once I'm out. Just unfortunately don't have a lot of free time due to work.

    Hey Im thinking of applying for the NCP scholarship because I too want to become a nurse but I had a quick question for you. Im thinking of applying to an accelerated nursing program to get my BSN but its only a year and a half. How many years would I be required to serve? Also this scholarship is to help you pay for schooling to receive your BSN right?
    Thanks!

    • @Klarissedoeslife
      @Klarissedoeslife  4 года назад +2

      Hi Anthony! My recruiter said usually a 15 month nursing program is the minimum requirement. You'd likely be required to serve 4 years. Just contact a medical recruiter as soon as you can because the timing of your NCP application + nursing program matters. And the scholarship will help because you'd get a $10000 bonus as well as a $1000 stipend each month while attending nursing school, but it's up to you what you want to spend it on. :)

    • @Klarissedoeslife
      @Klarissedoeslife  3 года назад +1

      You can start applying as soon as you're accepted into a nursing program. It's kinda weird so it's best to talk to a Navy medical recruiter so you don't miss the deadline, but basically you have to have at least 1 year and a half left of school when you get accepted I believe (which would be around November). Also, yes I am currently on orientation in the hospital and they give me 3 months. I think it depends on where you get sent for how long it is, but they won't just let a new nurse be on their own because we don't know anything really lol. Also, yes they ask what your preference is for specialty but ultimately it'll be the Navy's needs that come first. And typically they want new nurses to start in medsurg before going to a specialty.

      It’s more challenging to become a Navy nurse once you already are an RN. I don’t know if that’s really the case, it’s just what I’ve heard. Supposedly, if it comes down to them having to choose between you and one other candidate with the same GPA, same PFT scores, and all that jazz, whoever has the better employment history and references gets in. That’s how I understand it.

      For this program, you already need to have been accepted in a nursing program. We were both already in our second semester of nursing school when we started the application process for NCP. The application process is similar to nursing program requirements because it is competitive - they want to make sure they pick candidates who will finish nursing school first and foremost. Also, what kind of nursing program did you guys start out at? I am debating if it is worth applying to private schools for BSN or just a simply community college to get the process started.

    • @Klarissedoeslife
      @Klarissedoeslife  3 года назад +1

      @@Ale-gk6qz I believe as long as you meet the criteria, you should be able to apply and will just transition from reservist to active duty later. Clarice and I went to a 3 year BSN program because you HAVE to be in a BSN program. Make sure that if you take the private school route, you talk with a medical recruiter regarding when you should apply before you even get accepted so you don't miss the open window which is dependent on the length of your nursing program, esp. if it is accelerated.

      You’ll swear in a year before you graduate! So if you’re graduating May 2022, you swear in in May 2021 and start getting paid about 3 weeks after that. It’ll be $5000 plus the $1000 monthly until graduation. The other $5000 will be 6 months after your oath 😊

    • @Klarissedoeslife
      @Klarissedoeslife  4 года назад

      I received $24000 because I was sworn in with 1 year left in the nursing program, hence why I’m only required to do 4 years of service. $34000 is for those with 2 years left of nursing school and committing to 5 years of service. It’s more competitive to get accepted for the $34k, just because they have less spots open every year. I believe what my recruiter said was 5-10 people get picked for that (not sure).

    Any reason you chose the navy?

    • @Klarissedoeslife
      @Klarissedoeslife  3 года назад

      I didn't at all compare Navy nursing with the air force or army route. I just chose to apply because I want to have a "unique" nursing career. The opportunity to be able to work in different places, the additional challenge of having to meet physical standards plus emphasis on being a leader, and the military benefits (not just financially but also the great camaraderie in the military I often hear about) - these all appealed to me because I know I can't get this experience as a civilian nurse. Whereas if I end up not loving it, I can always leave after my contract and work as a civilian nurse (e.g. travel nurse).

      I don’t know much about it but I think I looked it up prior to applying for NCP. I believed it’s for high school students who are planning on attending a college that has the NROTC program, and if accepted, they get college paid for and have to serve after their graduation.

    How competitive is it to get a navy nurse corps scholarship? I have a 3.0 gpa cumulative but idk if it’ll be competitive enough. All my other requirements are great

    • @Klarissedoeslife
      @Klarissedoeslife  4 года назад +1

      I can't speak with 100% certainty and I think it varies with the pool of applicants each year, but when I applied my recruiter said there were about 300 applicants and 60 were selected. You should go for it if you think this is what you want to do because you never know! And they look at other things besides your GPA too so you can make your personal statement, interviews, etc stand out.
