Same what happened to me years ago. But I learned that what makes us having low self esteem oftenly is because of the world standards, by being not pretty, rich, failure, etc. So trusting God's love, what He has done for us, and who HE is, and at the same time understanding that we are sinners, makes me seeing what is worthy is just Him and things that glorify Him. That way, our confidence coming from God alone and what God did for us, not from us.

I'm there with you. I grew up hearing so many messages like this that are tailored to people who already have a high opinion of themselves. It's great for humbling people who need it but it just beats down on people who already have a low view of their worth bc of "righteousness".
We are called to love God with all our heart and to love our neighbor AS OURSELVES. We cannot love our neighbor properly without loving ourselves as well and believing that we are capable and good. God himself delights in us and says that we are good. He is our source of strength but we are still called to do good works (within human limits ofc) bc that's what He made us to do. Clearly, God knows our worth and I think learning that self-worth does not equal arrogance is incredibly important for people in general.

I am not sure you drew the proper conclusion. If a man is confident in God and His Word, then his preaching against self-esteem is not a reflection of a profound confidence in himself (arrogance), but rather confidence in God and His Word. We should speak against any sin, not because of any self-obtained enlightenment, but rather because we speak on behalf of one (God) who is worthy of our highest confidence.

God's love for us is infinitely more important than gaining men's love or even our own. In God's grace, those that repent and love the Lord our God will outlast this earth.Honestly I have been struggling with this. In today's world it is INCREDIBLY difficult to live/work/dwell around others with so much pride we feel like outsiders, cast away, weak and worthless because humility means not jumping at every chance to prove yourself as a valuable source. It can hurt but we are not of this world, and I have to remember that my value doesn't lie here in the valley of the shadow of death. My value comes from what Jesus Christ did for us on the cross.

  • @BreenyLee
    @BreenyLee 7 месяцев назад +1

Someone asked Did Jesus have self-esteem? to which I would say yes, He knew who He was. Nothing more nothing less.
Pride, when you strip it to its bare bones, actually comes from a place of insecurity. You aren’t truly secure in yourself so you puff yourself up and inflate your own ego to appear to be someone you are not.
It’s important that the Christian be humble yes but that comes from knowing WHOS You are.
Meekness can often be described as “strength under control” having a sword but laying it down for the sake of Jesus.
Meekness is NOT weakness it’s actually great strength!
Jesus was not insecure because He knew Who He Was.
You don’t have to be insecure when you know who you are in Christ, even with the knowledge of Who we are in Christ we lay it down and humble ourselves.
    That is true humility.

There is nothing wrong with being confident in yourself. The problem is when we become overly-confident in ourselves that we develop pride in thinking though we're God, better than anyone else, or that we know what's best for our life. True confidence is not being prideful...it's seeing yourself as God sees you. It's many Christians living in false-humility, being robbed of joy because they see themselves as "I'm just a wretched man. I'm just a begger to Christ. I'm a sinner saved by grace". Either you're a sinner or you're a child of God. Yes, you will sin but a Child of God/Believer/Disciple is not characterized by God. If God is King and Father and HE SAID we're made His image and like and that we are a royal priesthood and peculiar treasure, does it then make sense to walk around like you're a nobody?
We are to not think more highly of ourselves than we are, but that doesn't mean I can't think more highly of myself. Furthermore, I can think highly of myself AND highly of my brothers/sisters in Christ. That's called humility.

yaboy20071, unfortunately a lot of what you've written runs counter to scripture. James1:16-17 says : "Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. EVERY GOOD ENDOWMENT AND EVERY PERFECT GIFT IS FROM ABOVE, COMING DOWN FROM the FATHER of LIGHTS..." All of our talents originated from God himself, therefore we're acting in pride and self-deceit when we take credit for what God has given us. In John 15:5 Jesus bluntly said "FOR APART FROM ME YOU CAN DO NOTHING." In Philippians 3:3 Paul the apostle said he "put NO CONFIDENCE IN THE FLESH." In the prior chapter Paul charges us to "Do NOTHING FROM SELFISHNESS or CONCEIT, but IN HUMILITY COUNT OTHERS BETTER THAN YOURSELF." Philippians 2:3-11 is a process of encouraging us to follow Jesus's example of humility which culminated with his death on the cross after an illegal trial God many acts torture. But because Jesus humbled himself and glorified his Father, God raised him from the dead and Jesus will be coming soon in power and great glory to save those who are eagerly waiting for him!! This is In keeping with Proverbs 18:12: "Before destruction a man's heart is haughty, but HUMILITY GOES BEFORE HONOR." In Isaiah 43:6-7 God states his purpose creating us: "...bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth, every one who is called by my name, WHOM I CREATED FOR MY GLORY, whom I formed and made." We are made to glorify God not worship ourselves, which is idolatry!! Whenever God wants to get something through our thick heads he repeats it. So how important is our humility to God? THREE TIMES it is written: "GOD OPPOSES THE PROUD but HE GIVES GRACE/FAVOR TO THE LOWLY/HUMBLE" [PROVERBS 3:34, JAMES 4:6, and 1PETER 5:5]. Our self-confidence alienates us from God while being humble draws us nearer to him. In Numbers 12:3 it says, "Now the man Moses was very meek (i.e. HUMBLE), MORE MEEK THAN ALL THE MEN THAT WERE ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH." And there are many such examples throughout God's word, with Jesus's humility being at the top of the list. If we humble ourselves now we will reign with him in eternal glory later!! God bless you!!

yaboy20071 we are not made in God's image, we are far from it. Humans are not perfect and are no where near God's status. Having confidence is being prideful, we must be humble before God. He will show us humility if we get out of line. For example, when others tear you down is a great way to show humility. We don't fight back or trash talk, we just take it and humble ourselves.

Confidence in self, NO. Confidence in Christ, YES. Christians need to understand the total depravity of humankind. Yes we are created in God's image. But we have become WORTHLESS, all because of SIN. God saved us not because we are "precious" and "worthy", but because it is His very nature to love us, even in our being sinful and unlovable. Psychology books tell us about self esteem, and it is shaping the world today. As Christians, our sense of being good (Self-esteem) should be replaced with the sense of of who we are in Christ (Christ-centeredness). A true Christian humbles himself, never think of or aspire for self-esteem, self-worth, and self-glorification. Pastor JM is referring to the world view of self called "self-esteem", and he's right about it.

Ram have you ever thought about what the image of God actually consists of? I think if we could take time to consider what the imago de that we have been given as human beings and specifically for us who are in Christ we can personally own this image that has been redeemed for us by Jesus. From my 25 years of life so far here's what I think the image of God that we have been branded with is, these are some pieces of the image of God, our mind (our thoughts), our will (the will to live and survive and make choices), our emotions (our feelings), our human body (the limitations we have been created with being human beings), our self esteem (which is our sense or worth and value ie. feeling like we matter) our souls (the part of us that is eternal and will live beyond our physical death) My thoughts are is we chose to run away from this image that God (these image pieces listed above) made us with which makes up the pieces of our "humanity" we will only find more death, more sinful struggles and bring more things that create death in other human beings like ourselves. So if someone thinks of themselves not as human they will treat others like they are less than human. If we deny what makes us human we will deny the same things that make others human as well. I hope this stirs up constructive conversation and challenges us to think about the way we see ourselves and the way God see's us.

We are bad sinners, but self esteem isn’t demonic. Self esteem is confidence, and sometimes people have more self esteem than they need, and a high high high confidence which makes them arrogant. I don’t believe self esteem is demonic, because we have to love ourselves, because we were made by God, and we are important to him. Maybe not to other people but we are to him. Loving yourself is showing God how much you are thankful. But... self love should never be self glory, but self love should be humble. I love watching John MacArthur, but this just seemed odd hearing it from him. As it is said, love your neighbor as yourself. If you don’t love yourself, do you really truly love your neighbor? Love life, because God has given it to us because he is so perfect. We need self esteem, and self love, but it matters how much we have. If we have too much... then it can get very demonic. But self esteem is confidence, and you can use that confidence for yourself or for christ. Jesus would have had to had confidence to do what he did, but not nescecarily in himself. There is nothing wrong about self esteem, Mr. MacArthur. Self esteem is necessary for humans to have a healthy existence and enables us to navigate successfully in the world. The ego which is part of our conscious personality helps us in many things, i.e. decision making. Inflated ego? Yes. That is a negative quality. Pride is not a sin. Arrogance? Yes, that is a negative characteristic. Are you not proud of your children when they graduate from college? Are you not proud of your wife when she entertains your friends with a delicious meal? Maybe it would help you a bit if you read 2 Corinthians 7:4. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater!

“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”
      ‭‭Philippians‬ ‭2:5-8‬ ‭ESV‬‬
Jesus took the nature of a servant in humility. Even though He is God. Depends what you mean by self esteem I guess. He knew who He was yes. God would exalt Him. As shown in the following verses:
“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
      ‭‭Philippians‬ ‭2:9-11‬ ‭ESV‬‬
However He is the only one who could ever lay hold to such claims. Even if He did. Esteem Himself He’s the only one who can. Because He’s the only one whose works are perfect in all of His ways, who has all authority, who is worthy of all glory honor and power.
While we are called to imitate Jesus we are not like Him in His worthiness. He is a category all on His own in holiness. He is God. We can’t ascend to that place in our minds or hearts, or by any manner. That would be sin. The same sin of satan. Pride.

We ARE utterly sinful people, which is why we need a Savior, and that Savior is Jesus Christ. Though we are sinners, God sees we who are saved believers as righteous. We KNOW we are sinners, which is why we came to Christ to be washed clean of our sin, amen? I know I am the worst among sinners, but God DOES so love the world that He wishes for NONE to perish, and for all to come to repentance. By Justice God ought to condemn us right now as I type this. It would be good. We deserve it. Jesus is what we do not deserve. What we will never be worthy of. It is only when clothed in HIS righteousness that we could ever be saved, that we could ever be deemed “worthy” to God. By being clothed in Christ. All of us hidden and(or?) thrown away under Him. Self esteem is a must product. Pride in one's work. High self esteem builds confidence in a world of ever increasing chaos. Good manners , personal hygiene , Honesty , respect , appreciation , thankful heart all form strong self esteem. Without self esteem we are but empty shells. Satan advocates low self esteem.

Self esteem, like so many things, is a two edged sword. There are two sides to it. What John MacArthur is talking about is the negative, prideful self esteem that desires to promote self. Those with a humble self respect don't really think about themselves very much. All that you said describing self esteem is a beautiful picture of such a humble person who does not think about themself too highly. But, that being said, most of the self esteem talk in our culture is of the negative kind. The more self esteem talk increases, the more the arrogance of the culture increases and the less people in general hold the biblical perspective of personal sinfulness. Most people tend to think too highly about themselves. MacArthur's message is the antidote to the ever increasing love of self over the love of God. May that message be preached more and more!

How would you feel if your child had said, “I’m horrible, wretched, worthless”? That would disturb you as a parent; your natural instinct would be to assure the child of his/her value and goodness with an acknowledgment of room for improvement. If a human parent is capable of that compassion and love, how would our heavenly Father not be? This type of black-and-white, unproductively judgmental approach to Christianity is unattractive, cold, and alienating. Truth is far from warm and fuzzy all the time, but we’re not worthless doormats that deserve to be cast away. It seems like a sense of false humility to pacifiy an an abusive deity. It just does not ring true.

I agree with you. Unfortunately, I think so many congregations are used to this kind of message that is tailored to people who are already arrogant, not people with a healthy or low sense of self-worth. As a result, pastors who do preach about self-esteem or self-worth are viewed as "appeasing the world" or "promoting sin". I've noticed a lot of emphasis on punishment and behavior modification in many western churches, not as much just experiencing life/different perspectives and wrestling with God in ways that actually build faith.

    • @Charles-pf7zy

You can find people anywhere in the world that talk down on others while committing sin in secret. People that shame others but not themselves. People that take money from the public coffer and rationalize that they “did a good job and deserve this treat”. People that try to control their sons and daughters with whatever religious text they are raised with.
Ironically, many western priests have become the people that Jesus warned us about. And if you dare confront them, they will try to tell you the problem is you, not them, while they rob you as your back turns.

I would encourage my child that even believing they are wretched and horrible smacks of self focus. Jesus said “none are good” so not being good is not special. But we are made righteous by putting on Christ, dying to our own selves and following Jesus.. so my child and myself and everyone else is in the same need of a Savior. Throughout the law, G-d commanded us not to worship him in the way the nations worship their mighty ones. It's repeated so often, that it can't be considered unimportant. Even the Sabbath day, was a covenantal sign for all time. I am aware that some Jews write out G-d this way , too. But they believe they should not even say the name at all . Lucifer is the great imposter. But he is lawless. That's the Pope had to remove the Sabbath, and place people in Pagan temples, to cause them to forget who they really are. So they created a bastardization of the faith, using a name like zues, for Messiah, and forgot that our Father is King. Therefore, no one can change the law, it is established by the NT , never abolished. Come out of Babylon, my people. That really includes any form of mixed worship. Be Holy as he is Holy. If our garments are not washed, we will not enter his kingdom.

How come I believe that this is true yet not depressed? If you are a Christian you'd look at "esteem" for what it means not what you want it to mean. Here's what the word means: respect and admiration as well as reverence, among other things. Should we then not respect each other? No, but it should be God who esteems us and he may use people to do so. I don't hear the message and think "therefore I must hate myself and look down on myself" but do listen and think "I should look to not think highly of myself" -- see Romans 12 vs 16. So no, being Christian cannot possibly lead to depression. I sense that what many refer to as low esteem is simply "Humility" but humility is not a "nice" virtue, is it? The words of Christ bring life , joy, and peace not depression.

John's message on the topic is a gentle massage compared to Paul Washer's. It all goes 'back to the Garden' where "eve' got a 'bright idea' and thought for herself in regard to things we are ignorant about, The Knowledge of God. The 'heart of Adam's Darkness' lives on..there is no Fear of the LORD before their eyes.Suffering produces perseverance, perseverance produces strength, strength produces character, and character, Hope. and in that is Strength, but 'we esteemed him not'.. The Cross is the 'death knell' to 'self' - Esteem...the world hates it, man hates it, and people hate God for it, for 'the flesh is enmity with God'. "He who loves his life will lose it...." It's referred to in John as 'The Pride of Life' Part of the problem is to confuse confidence with self-esteem , the latter being an invented word of man in psychological circles , it's an endless loop. When one knows themselves in His Light everything falls apart and they can then Turn to a True and Living Hope that is not dependent on 'me' and 'my performance'..it's Freeing .."It is no longer "I" who lives, but Christ!" When "I" am my life, I am my own 'god'...why did God identify himself as "I Am'..? Because ' i am' not. ;-) ruclips.net/video/hNAaaXi6DUI/видео.html

What he is saying is correct and what you said in your other comments are also correct.
John is saying that apart from God , we are AWFUL. That is correct. We are sinners; no reason to feel good about ourselves or be confident in self. JESUS alone gives us worth. We have confidence, not in ourselves (because we are terrible by ourselves) but in Jesus, who covers and makes us a pure new creation; beautiful in Gods eyes.
John is warning against pride that boasts in the flesh. Any boasting should be in christ alone-- paul said that himself.

In God's eyes I was exceedingly sinful and yet He set His love upon me in
    Romans 5:8
"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
When I put my faith in the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ all my sins have been forgiven.
    Colossians 1:14
"In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:"
When God looks upon me He sees Jesus Christ who now lives in me and is my life.
    Colossians 1:27
"To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles;"
which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:"
God was angry at me but through the blood of Christ has forgiven me completely and I praise Him for what He has done through Jesus Christ my Lord and Saviour.
"For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ."
"That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ."

This is a sneaky way for the church to have control over an individual. Self esteem is demonic??? That’s a hot mess theory from organized religion

What's happened to this guy? God does not see our sin, we are made right through the blood of Jesus. MacArthur is not the one to speak about humility, he needs to excersise it 👀

Just remember, this is the hypocrite who fired and disgraced multiple people from his ministry for sins committed by their adult children, then went on to raise a son who scammed people out of tens of thousands of dollars, and guess what, he’s still in ministry.
Don’t give into self-hatred, it will not get you any closer to God. Yes, you are a sinner who needs God’s grace, and yes, you are no better than anyone else. That does not mean that you need to walk around with your head down and shoulders slumped, afraid to look people in the eyes because you feel like you have no value as a person, and allowing people to trample over you and the people you love because John MacArthur said feeling good about yourself is demonic. Trust me, I tried it. I lived that way for years and it never once did anything positive for my walk with God. It was only when I finally took the risk and let go of self-hatred, and accepted that I have value as a person, that I could finally accept the love of God and start to actually feel His presence in my life.
Jesus has strong words for those who harm “the least of these my brethren”, and people who have low-self esteem definitely fall into that category. It angers me to know how much pain, and separation from God sermons like this have caused.

they don't like self esteem, because people who think for themselves don't become sheep. I believe in God and I have my individual faith . Jesus said "love your brother like you'd love yourself" if u dont like yourself how can u do this? These religious leaders are mostly narcisists , they want you down on their feet doing everything they want.

The idea of being worthless, deprave and knowing God still wants us saves us loves us for our own sake and nothing else is a wonderful peaceful feeling. That's what he's getting at. That's the reality of the human condition. Pride, etc destroys that relationship with God and the fellowship with others. Self esteem sets arbitrary conditions for "why" someone is the best or should be looked at or cared about. But as soon as the those conditions are explained for why the person is loved then it's not really love. Being loved for our own sake as proofed by our depravity (no one loves wickedness or incompetence) is a fulfilling love. And God is enough. Not a career or a fancy house or the perfect family. But God. Self esteem psychology destroys that.

Jamie Lee- he was a Muslim who refused to fight in war because it was against his "self righteous" religion where he was trying to earn "gods" favor . (Which he never did or could do by the way) and he taught others to be self righteous and led many people down a false road because his hypocrisy was disguised by the political and social influence that he had on culture . So we call it good and fighting for what is right. Oh yea he was a real hero . He has a negative effect on this world in Gods eyes . He was a great boxer for his time in my opinion he wouldnt last 3 rounds with Tyson in his prime though
