As a limbless veteran (RAF), I was looking for an my first EV, I watched lots of car reviews from the Electrifying Team and had come down to a choice of 2, either Skoda Enyaq, preferred choice, or Hyundai Kona. Unfortunately, delivery of an Enyaq I was told would be 26 weeks, a Local car dealership (Arnold Clark) could get me a Hyundai Kona within 6 weeks. Thanks to your reviews, I'm now driving an adapted (Hand Controls) Hyundai Kona. I absolutely love this car, and I'm glad that I bit the bullet and went fully electric. Many thanks to the team at Electrifying for doing a great job of informing us all, of the good and not so good points of the current EV lineups. Keep up the good work guys. 💙
Got my first EV last week. This week I’ve learned to use excess solar to car. Between 11am and 3pm I’m getting 10kwh per day. 3rd day of doing this and I’ve gained a half tank of free fuel, that would otherwise have gone to the grid. Renault Megane Etech 60 Techo +.
Pennsylvania resident here --- why am I watching a UK EV channel? Because your whole team is fantastic. Fun, great reviews, world wide coverage too. I can't help but think if the US gets rid of govt intervention (tax credits and mandates) we could have a lot more EV models over here???
Great podcast. I bought my first EV without ever test driving one. It was during Covid and I bought it online from a main dealer and it was delivered to my house. It was a used Jaguar I-Pace which I chose because of the rave reviews. Driving it out of my drive for the first time was scary never having driven an EV before but I loved it within a couple of miles. I traded it in after a couple of years for another used I-Pace, still love it. Also bought a Fiat 500E for my wife so we're now all electric. Would never change back to ICE. I regularly take the I-Pace to the tip and the hi-vis guys recognise me now, never been moaned at. Also take it to Lidl where we do most of our weekly shop. The reason you see expensive cars at Lidl and Aldi is that people who are money savvy can afford expensive cars!
Renault really needs to make that R17 concept! An immediate purchase from me, in the “Galactic Brown” obviously. Please Electrifying team, convince them to put it into production!
In 2022 we were waiting for a VW E-up. This kept being delayed... So I called the leasing company and they offered us a Citroen E-C4 as an "in stock deal". Which we took without even driving it or looking at one. The only thing we did was look at your review on RUclips. It has actually been a brilliant and we love it.
I needed to add to your comments about the range on PHEVS, I agree, they need to legislate that it has to cover at least 60 miles on battery only or they can't sell it. Plus the likes of Nissan, should not be able to refer to their hybrids as EVs or e-Power or any other of the nonsense legacy auto are coming up with. For decades, we had mainline trains that use large diesel engine(s) attached to a generator to power the electric motors that drive the wheels. Intercity 125 etc. These trains were and still are referred to as diesel trains, not hybrids, not a unique electrified experience, diesel trains.
It's brave to be speaking about hydrogen. As much as I am 100% behind electric, if hydrogen can be done at scale with zero emissions, which, in theory, can be done, it should be offered to the public. No matter how little sense it makes, if it brings a market over from fossil fuels, it's a win.
Hydrogen fueling stations were so unreliable here in SoCal. Many relied on local electrolyzers and they couldn't keep up production to match their limited consumers. So people would show up and realize it'd be hours before they were ready to dispense. And then the complex pumps would fail, not unlike DC Fast Chargers. But with hydrogen, you cannot fill at home.
Oh and as for the Capri, I can see that cropping up in a County fair Raffle, or the modern day version of Bullseye, for those "This is what you could have won" moments... :-)
Thank you for answering my question about car leasing. I asked the same question of Auto trader at the same time, and have yet to receive a reply. I’m sorry I rambled on originally, and in future will try to keep it one question at a time, so thanks again.
So, in July I bought my first EV, a used I-Pace - still a gamble because it is still at the dealership getting stuff fixed (came with 2-year main dealer warranty, wouldn’t have bought it otherwise). Bought that because it’s the prettiest way to save money. After watching this episode I find myself trying to convince my wife to buy an ORA, which I don’t particularly like, just so we can put the Mini in the garage (2nd gen JCW convertible, it’s worth trying to preserve it). The money saved in fuel will literally pay for the lease!
I have an Ora 03 on the same deal terms as Tom discussed. It's our first EV and we love it. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this car as long as you can manage with the boot size. It's our second car so only used around town so it's absolutely fine for a pram, nappy bag and some occasional shopping bags. We've saved a packet on fuel compared to our previous petrol car. Great car.
I remember the original Renault 17 and even had a ride in one back in the day. I loved the styling, it was very 70s and I thought it looked cool. The underpinnings were Renault 12 I think and that was our family transport back in the 70s.
Thank you for the mention about the EV6 and the bags of soil say soil but it was mainly the pebbles and detritus of 70 years of human habitation coated in a bit of soil after I had sifted it.😂😂
If you want a matt car just buy a 90s red Toyota and don't wash it for a while, their paintwork went dull very quickly. As for VW supplying rubbers...I spilled my tea before you corrected yourself! Great video, always fun.
Ordered my Ora 03 earlier this week! So excited and then suddenly realised I need to get a smart meter to be able to switch to an EV tariff. Hoping To get this sorted ASAP and might need to find some cheeky free/cheap charging options in the meantime.
Hiya guys. I’ve ordered a new Tesla MY 🍒 RWD. I’ve been lucky enough to be driven in a M3 but never driven one. I own a Citroën Ami but now I want a bigger longer distance ev. Looking forward to EV lifestyle
I bought my MG ZS EV after seeing it at a car park! James Coates had a Press car and advertised he was going to be at the Bosworth Battle field car park, and it was a great intro offer, £3500 Gov grant and £3500 MG rebate for first 1000 cars, that was me. Leaf replaced!
Hydrogen is a strange one, still relying on finding a place to refuel, costs will be much higher than running a BEV. Energy wasted to produce Hydrogen compared to using direct in an EV and all parts will mean a company taking their own profits and pushing up prices. The current petrol stations would be better fitting EV charging and providing a coffee shop as they would make more profits!
What’s the point in matt paint. A coating that looks like it needs a wash even when it’s clean. Perhaps that’s the idea, a paint choice for people who never clean their car. And then they can feel good about the look of the car, as it looked grubby from day one.
Great discussions again Tom & Ginny, but just a couple of points.. I love a Coupe and I know you were discussing the 'Renault R17' which looks great, however, I'd like to know your thoughts on DS, who are updating the 'Citroen SM' which also looks fabulous, and when do you think the team will get to play in that.. It was Interesting to here you talk about V2H & V2G, because I would have assumed that everyone with Solar panels, would also have Battery storage to deal with V2H and outages, and as the EV Battery would normally be larger, V2G would be better placed in EV's I think. :-)
Interesting comment about the price to charge at a station, i recently hired an ID Buzz Cargo for a week to see how i get on with it, i've never used an EV before so wanted to live with one for a long test before buying. I cant install a charger at home (I work from home). It would cost me more to charge at my local Shell Garage, Starbucks or Morrisons supermarket than it would to buy petrol! So i decided not to go EV. I think this is something the government needs to address before insisting on EV's, Shell was charging 95p p/kwh!
My wife got a ride in a coworker's Lotus Elise at a company picnic, a super rare treat in the USA. Years later, we were looking to replace our 11 year old Z3, and she said out of the blue, "What kind of gas mileage does an Elise get?" She didn't have to ask me twice. I'm a lifelong sportscar fan, and realizing she was interested, I found a 2 year old, low miles example 2 hours away. In the meantime, I'd snagged a test drive at a Las Vegas dealer, and I was sold. We owned that car for 12 years, put 60k miles on it, and managed to sell it for the same money we'd paid. We replaced it with an i4 eDrive40, which is more than twice its weight. BTW, the Elise got 30 mpg using a Celica GTS, Yamaha tuned motor.
I Brought my 2018 e-golf because Jonny Smith liked it. Also test drives were impossible as I had to wait for a year for a factory order. However I never been involved in a quicker handover at the dealership. I think he was frightened I would hand it back.
Saw Tesla at the Good Food Show and the saw Tesla at the tiny Ilkley Fiod Fayre. Incidentally the young man on the Tesla stand at Ilkley insisted that Tesla no longer transfer free charging on early Model S cars to subsequent owners. Please can you clarify? Love the podcast - weekly must watch.
Yeh! I got a mention, and you where much kinder about my alias than Robert on FC, there's a long story behind the name. Re Hydrogen, and vans. One of my vehicles is a XLWB Ducato camper, empty it weighs close on 3tonne, normal running mass is nearer 3.5tonne, typical usage several times a year would be 300miles on first and last days of holiday, with with short distances in middle of holiday, BEV vans of this size and weight are not up to this type of usage, let alone when we do a 'road trip' like this years trip to Nord Cap which was 7000miles. I think hydrogen is the logical alternative even if it's expensive. For cars there might be the odd case for hydrogen, but surely most would be much better with a BEV.
Tom is right for once the Capri is not a bad looking car just they messed with the name...and the price should be around 30k max for your average consumer to think about buying or leasing other wise deposits go crazy people can pay the monthly but the upfront puts people off unless your a rich journalist lol
When did the Renault Fuego get central locking because the first time I remember it was on a Renault 11 Turbo. My friend got a brand new one in 1984 when B registration came out. It was like witchcraft at the time. We were very young then of course 😂
Ford would have to pay me to get a New Capri. They offered a 48 hr test drive in the Mach-E and I could bring myself to do that either. Maybe I'm just old and stubborn (overly nostalgic), maybe I'm just stupid, but I can't get past the name of them.
Surprised the economy was so bad in the Golf. I get around 55mpg on a motorway. There's a breakeven point with PHEVs if you want to use public charging and it's around 40p/kwh. Any more than this and you might as well buy petrol.
I'd also say all my cars apart from 1 or 2 have been without test drives because they are company leases and you can't get a test drive with a dealer or the lease company for love nor money.😕😕 Gap in the market maybe?
Difficult to calculate 260,000 miles but even assuming cheap rate at home electric it is still over £12,500. But imagine the average petrol car, which would have burnt £40,000 worth of petrol.
Electricity could quite possibly be a lot cheaper. If you conservatively assume 3.2 mi/kWh, that'd need 81250 kWh. My home electric is £0.07/kWh overnight so would have cost £5,687
With the £40k "Luxury" car tax hitting EVs in 6mths is the EV3 actually going to do very well unless they drop the top spec prices ? The only one with a heat pump is the higher spec model.
Ioniq 6 RWD Ultimate in gravity gold without a test drive, couple of months after ordering had a 5 day test drive which confirmed the choice. Decision based off your reviews and Bjorn Nylands review and 1000 km drive
Be sure to explain to dad that if you run out of fuel in an FCEV, you can’t simply walk to the fuel station with a Jerry can and pick up a gallon of h2.
Your average kWh price for tesla was possibly a bit high - I would have said over those years it's probably more like 35p or less for Tesla drivers... Just a thought... DOn't ever accept figures that say 'ZapMap' say for sure. :) Ref. BMW and Toyota and Hydrogen - as Scotty would say in Star Trek "I canny change the laws of physics Captain!' Basically Hydrogen really is never going to work for any kind of transport or any process...
What bothers me is that PHEV's are sold as a "stepping stone" from ICE to BEV, but if the PHEV EV experience is lousy it's going to put people off making the move to BEV.
@@philiptaylor7902I have a 21 Rav4 Prime and its a hoot to drive in EV mode. So much so that I want to drive electric all the time. It has two electric motors which give you about 220 hp which is more than enough around town and adequate on the freeway. About the same as a lot of fwd or RWD EV’s. On longer trips is a very efficient hybrid vehicle. My next car will definitely be a BEV, but this car is awesome. Here is in the US, if you do a lot of long road trips a PHEV can be very attractive as it will be faster and more convenient to refuel.
@philiptaylor7902 it can work. We got a PHEV on lease a few years ago and will soon move over to a BEV. There weren't many midsize EVs for a reasonable price back then and few used ones. Now there are more to choose from. Still a bit pricey when new but some PHEVs are just as expensive. I would recommend a BEV but some people are really cautious regarding EVs. I still think a PHEV can be a first step.
@@fullrulle77 It depends on what you are after. I drive a Phev and I’m driving electric most of the time and I use gas on long trips. Very convenient and I think it’s very appealing to a lot of people. If you think that EVs are a lot better for the planet then a BEV makes more sense. I bought my Phev in 21 and there were far fewer choices. My next car will be a BEV because I want to drive electric all the time but on a practical level what I have will be hard to give up. I have had no problems with the car and when I head out on the 800 mile trip to visit my family I don’t worry range or whether or not the charger will work when I get there.
Deal of the Week Ora 03..... There may be a reason this is the deal of the week.... the ORA EVs Community Forum covers a litany of woes with this car. From screens that die to 12v battery woes to long waits for parts to long waits for dealer software updates (and still not all cars have Car Play/Android Auto) to over dramatic safety systems (complete with bings and bongs) to a potentially lethal LKA system to insurance issues (due to the name change from Cat to 03) to app issues to the strange indicator stalk operation to lack of rear wiper to complicated screen operation of almost everything to pretty much smallest boot in calss to low charging speeds to screws falling out of the car key casing..... And more! So maybe Ora are trying to get rid of stock? Other manufacturers are responding to customer complaints (MG4 got a rear wiper and a much larger A/C screen, BYD have done a software update to tone down the LKA and, I hear, are offering better tyres to customers of their Dolphin model). I don't think Ora is following suit. At all.....
@johngraham1321 just ordered mine. Of these potential problems the only ones that would even vaguely concern me are 12v battery (not an uncommon issue on EVs, such as the ioniq 5) and the screen going blank. Seems like a very decent package for very little money.
Nobody wants a coupé ? ? ? . . . .There ARE no EV coupé's. Many people hate the endless stream of deadly boring 4-door sedans. People buy them coars there is nothing else than 4-door EV's. Try to make a count of all the affordable EV's that are 2-doors coupé or cabrio . . . . . . . . . yeah, . . . .silence. Everyone i know, that sees a 2-door older car, says "oh, nice, i lkike that design . . . when they make that, i would buy it. The 17TL and Fuego . . .2-door, the Capri . . .2-door. It are always the 2-door cars that people seem to like . . . why? Coarse a 2-door car is so much better suited to make the design "sportier and exciting". All great sportcars? 2-door or 3-door.
Why can't you talk about the Casper/Inster from Hyundai as a RUclipsr in Korea has multiple videos including a drive review so seems odd the Euro/UK HQ for Hyundai are locking it down do they still live in the 1990's or something when there was no internet. Just so Ginny knows FINALLY Australia is getting the Enyaq in two trim levels but starting at just under $70k AUD, really wished it wasn't so delayed otherwise my current EV MAY have been an Enyaq instead of the 2024 Kona. :( Mind you the software is VW so that could be the worst part of the Enyaq. Oh man, BMW/Toyota stupidest idea ever but then knowing the Toyota chairman of the board and he who hates anything to do with BEV. Just think though Toyota will have to truck all their ICE cars out of Norway as of early Jan when they are banned from selling them. Hydrogen is only the fossil fuel lobby clinging on for life. Hydrogen has a place in large vehicles such as long distance shipping, possibly trains and long distance flights.
Please, please stop telling us about all this free power from Octopus (and others). I have been with Octopus for a while but the "smart" meter they installed still does not communicate, so we unable to avail ourselves of any of these offers. The last technician who called admitted that 30% of the meters he installs have the same problem. (In my case, not helped by my living in a Cumbrian valley).
Only issue with the Tesla you are sat in will be the navigation and software as it does not use 4G, 3G already turned off and 2G by end of year. Upgrading the screen to be able to do 4G is costly.
I never understood one size fits all when it came to transportation technology. As Ginny alluded to. Long distance trains, in the US, interstate buses and long haul trucking could benefit from Fuel Cell technology. Whereas, local and individual transportation seems to lend itself to the EV revolution. And in areas of the world that is still far behind in infrastructure of todays green revolution may benefit from PHEV and LNG transportation as a transition technology till they came become a greener transportation technology. .

Will Suzuki have to alter the eVX name since we already have the KGM Torres EVX?
Difficult to calculate 260,000 miles but even assuming cheap rate at home electric it is still over £12,500. But imagine the average petrol car, which would have burnt £40,000 worth of petrol.
Electricity could quite possibly be a lot cheaper. If you conservatively assume 3.2 mi/kWh, that'd need 81250 kWh. My home electric is £0.07/kWh overnight so would have cost £5,687
@@spiersaj Same.
Is that a trick of the light? or a really grubby headlining?
I have an Aptera reservation i don't know if i will be able to test it before buying it
With the £40k "Luxury" car tax hitting EVs in 6mths is the EV3 actually going to do very well unless they drop the top spec prices ? The only one with a heat pump is the higher spec model.
Smart meter, OVO EV tariff and 3 phase ( 22Kw) charger 11pm to 2am free charging zero pence that's a net charge of £0.00 then 8p per hour!!!!
I heard that Ford couldn’t find the box of Cortina badges, but found the box of Capri badges. Would we be moaning if it was called the Cortina?
Can you do a review of the 2025 model year refresh of the Ionian 5. Massive update apparently.
I've seen the Ora 03 for just under £200 per month with one month deposit and 10k miles per annum over 3years.
Cracking deal?
Sorry Ginny, the only comment I have is, yessss we can see Ginny clearly and bright, are you using your new webcam or is it Tom’s. Keep up great work
Satin paint awful for minor repairs and scratches. Ceramic coatings don’t work as well. Only wraps safe but expensive.
If a PHEV only makes sense if you can charge at home then they don't make any sense because if you can charge at home you should get a BEV
Would they make Hydrogen powered ICE Hybrids?
🥰 Yeah, The week is looooong, without the KHH.
I had a phev, sold it after 6 months.
They are generally lackluster from an ICE point of view and very lackluster from an EV point of view.
Capri over ID4 all the time🎉❤
Matte paint won't age well. Almost as much of a hassle to look after as a stupid stainless dorkmobile
The bigger issue is how do you produce the hydrogen at a reasonable cost it’s a dead duck
It just needs renaming to Ford Explorer Fastback 😉😉
Fowl play? 🐔
You’ll be able to get a Maserati GrandTurismo Folgore for peanuts in a couple years once the usual Maserati depreciation kicks in
Why can't you talk about the Casper/Inster from Hyundai as a RUclipsr in Korea has multiple videos including a drive review so seems odd the Euro/UK HQ for Hyundai are locking it down do they still live in the 1990's or something when there was no internet.
Calling that Countryman "lovely" is overly kind. It's an awfully akwardly styled car, and should be known as a MAXI.
Why is Ginny wearing chainmail around her neck?
Please, please stop telling us about all this free power from Octopus (and others). I have been with Octopus for a while but the "smart" meter they installed still does not communicate, so we unable to avail ourselves of any of these offers. The last technician who called admitted that 30% of the meters he installs have the same problem. (In my case, not helped by my living in a Cumbrian valley).
Only issue with the Tesla you are sat in will be the navigation and software as it does not use 4G, 3G already turned off and 2G by end of year. Upgrading the screen to be able to do 4G is costly.
Foul play, or Fowl play? @ruclips.net/video/JXGx1UJ88Ak/видео.html
I never understood one size fits all when it came to transportation technology.
As Ginny alluded to. Long distance trains, in the US, interstate buses and long haul trucking could benefit from Fuel Cell technology. Whereas, local and individual transportation seems to lend itself to the EV revolution. And in areas of the world that is still far behind in infrastructure of todays green revolution may benefit from PHEV and LNG transportation as a transition technology till they came become a greener transportation technology. .
