Waiting Out Winter in The Off-Grid Cabin | Starting Sourdough

  • Henry is 6 weeks old! And he definitely doesn't need to be venturing outdoors with us when it is 20 below again!! For this week's video, I dug out my sourdough starter from a little Alaskan shop nearby and got it into a jar to start fermenting.
We are looking at well over a week of temperatures in the negative so even the winter work at the future homestead is having to wait. We keep planning on making it over there to at least get some trees by the pond down, but it's just too cold right now. As much as we don't mind embracing the super cold, Henry needs to stay in through it and things start to break at these temperatures anyway.
Sourdough is something relatively new to me! I did try and make a starter back at my home in Colorado but I never succeeded at making any decent bread with it. Then when we sold the house and moved into the camper, it did not end up making it.
I am dreaming of baking our weekly bread at our big cabin once it is done, so why not start the "starter"?
Thank you as always for keeping up with us! We have more guests coming into town so I am hoping to take a break from the little man and get some snowmachine shots for you all in the next video!

You can also use your sourdough for waffles/ pancakes or sourdough tortillas, pizza crust??etc or Dutch babies on the wood stove I imagine. We lived without hydro for a year, and I learned to make all sorts on the wood stove.

Good morning sweet Becca and Henry! I feel for you I have an entire kitchen and feel like that is all the counterspace I have too. I had hubby build a small breakfast bar just to have a tiny bit more space to use.

Hi there, you can bake your bread in a pan on stove. Make balls and place them in a pan with lid. There are lots of ideas how to on Google. Good luck.

Don’t give up on your Sourdough it takes at least one year of practice to get it right. Congratulations on your son; you all seem to be doing well. A thermometer will help with temperatures. A Cambro container will be better for you. I’ve been making it for 4 years in March, any questions please ask.

Sourdough tips…use a bowl with a lid not a jar as it gives more surface area for natural yeast to take hold and is less messy, just easier. I put my sourdough starter in a mason jar when I put it in the fridge to store it long term otherwise when feeding it on the countertop I have it in a medium glass bowl.

Hope you enjoy your sourdough journey. For storing sourdough starter I keep mine in a 32.oz pickle jar. Short with a big mouth and came from the store full of pickles to boot!

Good to see that everyone is doing well. I hope you have better luck than we've been having with our sourdough. I think it might be a little too cool in our house, I'm not sure what the problem is, but sourdough bread is the best 😋
