I had the privilege to sing for your Father on a master class in Finland in the late 90s. He was truly a great helden tenor and an amazing singer. He was elder at the time, but he sang Schubert’s Der Atlas and Tosti’s Chanson adieau for us participants, and that was something unforgetable! His voice was still very powerfuäl and touching.
Hi Dave, I used to play for your father for rehearsals in his apartment on Harthauserstrasse in Munich in the early 1980's. I had finished my masters in accompanying at the University of Illinois in 1981 with John Wustman. Your father so kindly offered to connect me with the opera house in Munich, but I thanked him and turned down his gracious offer with the reason that "my German is not good enough yet." I, of course, loved playing for your father with his gorgeous, huge voice! Was so fun to play "Love Went a Riding" for him. I also enjoyed the apple pie his wife made.
This is the only clip I know of James King speaking (and singing) in his native language. The extensive August Everding interview is conducted in German.
..he was a great singer, but certainly not the "World's greatest Helden tenor". This kind of unthoughtful, and indifferent statements shed a ligth on your unqualified musical judgement.
I was in Munich in 1983 and 1984 and I heard James King singing Lohengrin and Fidelio . Fantastic!!

My father James, was younger on this clip than I am now, I am his eldest son, Dave King. Thanks for posting this video!
That must be an odd feeling. He was a great singer.
One of the world's greatest tenors, quite simply!
Your dad rules
Your father was a great man as well as a great singer! I wish I had gotten to know him more when I was at Indiana University!

James King, Samuel Ramey, Joyce Didonato....so many good singers from Kansas of all places 😮
my first tenor I heard in my life. I was 12 years old (1960 Vienna State Opera Don Jose) Great
A very fine tenor, and even a greater human being!!!!!
