The Tomb of Jesus Explained

  • For hundreds of years, the tomb of Jesus has been depicted in paintings, sculptures, film, and other visual media. But how accurate are these depictions? What secrets might still be revealed to better represent how the Savior’s tomb would have appeared at the time of his death and resurrection?
Over 900 tombs have been discovered in Jerusalem dating to the time of Jesus. This research allows us to capture a picture of His tomb better than any previous depiction. By carefully examining statements from the four gospels and archeological remains, we will attempt to recreate, with the magic of 3D modeling, one of the most detailed and accurate renderings ever presented of the tomb of Jesus.

I haven't been to the Holy Land myself, but I have heard people who have been there say that it is very hard in some places to imagine what the sites would have looked like in the time Jesus lived there - because of everything that has been built up and around and on top of those original places of pilgrimage, not to mention years of erosion. Thank you for helping us be able to visualize the possibilities - this video had a wonderfully faith-enhancing feeling added to the archaeological science.

One thing not included in their consideration is in Matthew 28 where we read about the angel rolling away the stone and sitting upon it. So there could not be the overhanging porch. Was the angel sitting up on the standing stone or was he sitting on the stone rolled off and left on the ground? If the latter, there would not be any wall obstructing it in its falling down to ground. Another detail is in Mark 16 where we read about the women coming to the tomb having to look up to see the stone rolled away, hence does it imply the tomb was on a higher level than the path leading to it? Another interesting point was in John 20 where John described the stone as being taken away, not just rolled away. So was it just rolled away from the door, or literally removed apart from the tomb? The fact that it was a new tomb in a garden near Golgotha seemed to depict a relatively well developed place outside the then city wall with significant human traffic and with ample water supply chosen by this prominent rich man, thus showing that it's not in an old quarry. Also of note if the entrance of the tomb faced east for the morning sun to illuminate the interior, it could not be on lower ground than the city wall hence the tomb must either be either on even higher ground or even on the east of the city.

  • @cherrytomato6139

I have read various theories on the subject, with some scholars arguing the stone must have been a square one, but this video is very comprehensive and convincing. Especially taking into account the tomb initially belonged to a prominent and wealthy person.

That rolling stone explanation makes sense to me. I’ve often fretted about the idea of a round wheel-like stone. What was that doing near the tomb? But the rectangular “rolling” stone explains it so well. Thank you!

Thank you, Daniel -- what a comprehensive and thoughtful video! I would be grateful for your thoughts on the likelihood that the Garden Tomb could have been Jesus' tomb. It : (1) is in a garden, (2) is not far from the "Rock of the Skull" site at Golgotha (which, incredibly, is still distinctly visible), (3) has a few places to sit in the small courtyard area outside the door, (4) has carved channel for a large rolling rock, (5) has a door and ceiling that are short enough requiring anyone taller than say 5 feet to have to stoop in order to enter and move around, (6) has only two carved "beds" for bodies to be lain, hence it was a new tomb (perhaps prepared by a man for him and his wife to be laid in), (7) has both beds located to the right of the door, (8) has a window above the beds which would have illuminated the small room in the morning, despite the fact that the Garden Tomb faces south and not east, and (9) both angels would have been immediately visible to Mary when she looked inside the door and saw them sitting to the right.
These are compelling arguments to me. The counter arguments that I can think of so far are : (a) the Garden Tomb's beds are on the floor of the tomb, so the angels would have had to be sitting on the floor (which was not mentioned in any of the Gospels and is a detail that I think at least one of the authors would have noted, and (b) the beds are both quite short, suggesting that if Jesus was taller than about 5'8" his head would have had to be perched up on the wall, which if you have been there you will know rounds up a bit before it goes vertical.
As you correctly note, finding the exact tomb could be a faith-promoting experience, but it does not change in any way what is truly important -- the reality of Christ's atonement for us, both before and on the cross, and his resurrection on the third day to complete his foreordained mission as our Savior and Redeemer. Yet ever since I visited the Garden Tomb about 10 years ago I have always been curious about it and would appreciate your thoughts, considering how deeply you have obviously researched this topic.

    • @messagesofChrist
      @messagesofChrist  Месяц назад +3

Good question and I plan to eventually do a detailed video on this topic once we get a 3D model finished. The biggest issue with the garden tomb is it is not a tomb from the time period of Jesus, but actually is dated to around 600 BC. This is both because of the carving marks and also the design of the tomb, which actually matches a complex of tombs just on the other side of the hill which have been dated as well. The channel was added later and is believed to be a watering trough because it extends across the entire face of the tomb in both directions which would not be needed and never shows up with other rolling stone tombs. This would allow for many animals to drink at the same time. However it would not make since as a channel for a rolling stone as it would just need to roll open and closed. You would not need a track across both sides and extending far past he opening. We also know that the current door and front were repaired, so the window would probably not be there and the door even shorter. As for the rock of he skull, he challenge is that it is very likely that two thousand years ago it would have looked different. Even within the last 10 years part of the rocks collapsed. Jerusalem limestone is very soft and two thousand years would be a lot of wear. So it is really hard to say for sure that it looked like that at the time. It very likely had a very different look. As for the garden, there are examples of many areas outside the city that had gardens. The Garden Tomb is an incredible and beautiful site and I love to visit, but it very likely was not the tomb. Mostly because it just does not date to the period and thus could not be a new tomb. That’s the short answer but I will eventually do a video that will go in more depth. Hope that helps!

It is my understanding that all tombs of Jewish people that believed in Resurrection faced towards Jerusalem and bodies lain with feet closest to Jerusalem so they could be well on their way when they rose from the dead. Pharisees believed in the Resurrection of the body and soul and in Universal Judgment and After Life (and ghosts, spirits and angels). Sadducees did not. Joseph Arimathea and Nicodemus were Pharisees (as was Mary of Nazareth's family). it is believed by some that Annas and Caiaphas were Sadducees and therefore had a difficult time understanding or believing Christ's references to restoring the Temple in three days.

There is something fundamentally wrong with the logic of a possible tomb for Jesus. According to scripture, the women found an empty tomb. And according to scripture, Jesus was in the flesh (Thomas was offered to touch his wounds) when he rose to heaven. That has to imply that there was no flesh to be buried and no need for a tomb.

Jesus was on the counsel of Rome. We do know he had a Greek title, or he couldn't of become a Orthodox priest. He left Judaism as a Rabbi, to pickup his title as Senator. A senator from his own family, Pontius Pilate, had to arrest him. Now, the level of court, proves Jesus is not African. He was laid in his old Greek church. Moved to a noble grave.
    .
Joseph was on the Hebrew counsel. That's also not African. Mary Might have been Greek?
    .
The picture of white Jesus of the Catholics is, the correct image.
    Now for the religion side:
The Antichrist is identical to Jesus.
We can't tell them apart. Jesus comes back of no birth. Never ages. The Antichrist is born of a dog, and identical to the embodiment of Jesus.
Jesus left his Embodiment, to become celestial. But identical.
