Lee told you about the singers from the Ukranian church who showed up every Christmas on their tour of people woh would make a large (?) contribution. The tradation was to bring out a tray with a shot glass for each. They were pretty smashed sometimes, I wondered ho many houses the visited.
It was magnificent. The acoustics of our front entry and those voices. I wish I had a recording.

Astonishing song, astonishing album side. Good headphones, late at night, turned up loud, one person starts listening to the first track and different one finishes the last.

It is staggering in it's beauty and complexity. MrMarrs has done a staggering job (as he always does) putting together visuals to explain the song. It's not the end track of Hounds of Love/9th Wave though. Morning Fog is. It is the Earth waking from her slumber when land reemerges from the ocean while also being KB's relief of coming out of her studio after completing the album. I hope you've subscribed to this channel to see more of MrMarrs genius tributes to KB's music (and other artists). I haven't watched conventional tv for over 18 months. I watch something from this channel almost daily. I'm waiting for MrMarrs to upload his clip to "Strange Phenomena".

I could identify with her in so many ways in my youth... I kept this love of her music away from my so called friends that you could count on one hand!. Favourite songs that always stand out for me : The Man With The Child In His Eyes/ Mother Stands For Comfort /The Sensual World / Jig of Life / Etc Etc Etc...:)

The young ones at the time didn’t know that Kate wasn’t trying to fit into the world of pop music. I’m the same age as Kate and back when she started, I loved some of her music but was completely baffled by most of it. Now at age 65 I totally get it. I get her. It’s art. It was never meant to fit in with Waterloo or Mamma Mia by Abba. She’s has always been out on her own limb, with her own style that hadn’t been heard anywhere back then. It was something new. Kate is a genius. Way ahead of her time and a lot of her music is way too mature for most very young people of that era. I’m just glad that I finally caught up. She’s phenomenal.

When I bought Kate's 'Hounds of Love' Album in 1985, it was, like everyone else, for the great sequence of singles like "Cloudbusting", "Hounds of Love", and "The Big Sky" on side one.
I would later start dipping into the experimental '9th wave' conceptual suite on side two and kept finding little sequences of musical nuisances that triggered a range of emotional reactions, sufficient to keep me returning to these scenes and apparitions about a woman drifting alone in the sea at night, trying to stay awake and alive during her night long ordeal in the cold water.
Only Kate's theatrical imagination could have come up with this surreal story with Georgean chanting, Irish jigs, haunting voice samples and an enigmatic switch into whispered German with "Tiefer tiefer' ('deeper deeper') thrown in alongside stunningly beautiful passages in the 'Get out of the water' verses, this isn't something that was ever going to be on Top of the Pops! but I always sensed that my personal musical voyage would be richly rewarding.
It took a lot of persistence in 'submersing' myself in this over the summer of 86 but each time I dived in I found some quirky or sudden 'moment of pleasure' to keep me interested. I still come back to this from time to time today, and find something new. If there is a track that I have to rip out of its context to stand alone, it is this one.❤

    • @Picnicl
      @Picnicl 4 года назад

Unless you listen to every single Bowie album, appreciate them for the wildly different contexts and purposes that they were created in, it is easy to regard Bowie as more shallow than Bush. It is actually quite a genius of Bowie to be a shallow looking water that runs deep. They were very different. Bowie was so soulful (check the song It's Gonna Be Me from the Young Americans sessions), so about the outsider - although often in a Nietzschian sense (Kate's arguably more about the 'insider' - the person in a stablish relationship, the person who works for the government etc. She's basically solidly middle-class par excellence). I don't like to say one's better even though Kate more explicitly plucks at the heartstrings and presents a more classically British life of playing piano in the parlour and being extremely family-oriented. She's certainly more organised in her albums as a fully cohesive, enjoyable, statement and she's far more of a concept artist than he was. She's far more of a composer than he was. He had his John Lennon-like ego going on sometimes and he wasn't particularly gracious to some British artists. However, she hasn't namechecked many people who came along after her either.

Keith. Please look harder. There's never been a better time to discover new talent. We have to ask the question (as I'm sure KB has asked herself many times), would (she) have been 'discovered' had it not been for a lucky break? We all know the story. Don't give up in despair of ever finding anyone to match her - her wonderful, consistently beautiful music. Don't allow it to stifle your quest. Great as her music is - don't forget that Kate's music is a sum of parts - an amalgam of everything that influenced her songwriting - her vision. She, in turn, has influenced so many others & continues to do so.
I'm 66 with a lifelong love of music. In the 1940's My mum was a singer in a danceband. My whole life has been surrounded by music and, in our digital age, there's never been a better time in history for talented songwriters, musicians to reveal their craft to the world. 'Discovery' of new talent is no longer the sole domain, the proviso of record companies who sift through for what is commercial - what they think will sell - often discarding material that isn't instantly likeable.
Can you remember the first time you heard Wuthering Heights? I can remember it. I was 24, a vocalist in a band performing covers of rock music and I remember being ridiculed (in the nicest possible way) over my enthusiasm for this strange 'girl' with a high pitched voice singing a song that was about as far removed from the rock 'norm' as was possible to get. She was too different - too 'out there'. And, back then, she was the wrong gender! Music was dominated by all male 'groups' & singers. Gilmore had the insight - he was the vital spark that got the ball rolling (pardon the pun.) Had it not been for Dave Gilmore, it's highly unlikely that Kate would have seen the light of day. Right from the beginning - even after she'd been recommended by Gilmore, EMI were far from certain. They thought he'd sold them a dud. But for her strength of purpose, Wuthering Heights wouldn't even have been her first single!
Never forget; The Beatles went to Decca... Decca turned them down - at which stage they could have been hidden from the world for ever! Decca said "Whoops, big mistake", then signed up The Stones. Fortunately we no longer have to rely solely on the big boys dictating what we listen to. There's a whole would of great music at our finger tips. We just have to look.
Keep searching & you'll find. Have you heard Laura Marling? She's just one of many hugely talented musicians available for our enjoyment. If you haven't - I recommend you listen firstly to the album 'I Speak Because I Can'. Happy searching - may the music be with you!

You're wrong friend. Use rateyourmusic to find excellent music from today. Millenials are plenty capable of writing great music and denying that fact is very close-minded. Our forefathers said the same about their respective eras. Don't make the same mistake.

@@keithgregorygregory5702 Seems that my best intentions - my time consuming & non confrontational effort to help in your search for 'new' music has come to nought. As I tried to explain... there is simply more music out there now and, with that, comes an inevitable mix of good bad & in-between. There's always been dross, there's always been good. Back in the 60's, 70's & 80's there was dross, lots of it, and our only source was what the record companies thought was commercial enough to sell in huge volumes. Nothing has changed - but the search is more exhaustive - we have to make the effort to see beyond the 'garbage'. It's there in greater volumes than ever! But here I go again - wasting my time.
This time time I make no apologies for being confrontational... You've closed your mind - you're not listening - you're not searching. Did you even bother listening to Laura Marling as I suggested? An incredibly talented singer song writer with a string of albums to her name. I discover lots of great new music via suggestions from others who are trying to be helpful. If you did listen & you dismissed her music as "Garbage", then you truly have closed you mind.
I've worked with a lot of talented musicians over the years. None of them wallow in the musical past. They acknowledge its influence, praise it, in some cases almost worship it, but never allow it to cloud their judgement or stifle their search for the new.
