- Royal Arch Trail review starting at the Colorado Chautauqua. We combined the Chautauqua, Ski Jump, Bluebell-Baird, and Flat Irons Loop Trails to reach the Royal Arch Trail. The Royal Arch Trail ultimately reaches the Royal Arch, a spectacular natural rock formation in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.
Our trail combination up and down from the Royal Arch ultimately came in at about 4.25 miles. This is a strenuous trail but extremely rewarding in terms of views. The altitude is a factor if you do not regularly hike in high altitudes.
We would certainly recommend this trail but urge you to keep in mind that it is extremely popular and difficult.

How do you find it hiking with your dog? I am going to Colorado for my first major hiking trip, and one side of me wants to bring my dog, the other half feels like itll make it harder on the trip. How do you guys find traveling with your dog?
Thanks for asking Jackson. Most of all the Chautauqua open space that we took our dog Bean on was great for dogs. Towards the end of our hike as you get closer to the Arch there were some steep and craggy rock crossings that we didn't feel safe having Bean cross on her own. For those few spots we carried her over. There are two reasons for this one is that we didn't want her to fall . . . she's typically more sure-footed than us so it was probably not something we should have worried about. The second reason is that she has a bad elbow so we try to limit big downward jumps if we can. We would certainly bring her back there again because 95% of those trails are great for dogs.
As for traveling with your dog it is certainly a commitment. There are some trails and wilderness areas where dogs are not allowed so you'll need to check on that before hiking a trail. Lodging can also be an issue as you'll need to find accommodations on your trip that allow pets. Lastly, while most dogs will be able to outpace their owners you do need to be paying attention. Make sure that all your hikers are doing well on the hike including your dog. Bring extra water and possibly a collapsible bowl.
We love traveling with Bean but depending on what we're doing it doesn't make sense for every trip. We always appreciate the freedom when we don't have Bean but we also love how much fun we all have when she gets to come with us.

CO is very dog friendly always keep paperwork/tags up to date and on leash in areas more people heavy. You will cross many dogs off leash out here so make sure your dog is very well socialized and easy with others approaching. PICK UP AFTER YOURSELF AND PETS and all will be great! ALSO, the rocks are a bit sharp so not good for a dog indoor novice.
Most places you need a leash for dogs and good in case you encounter wild animals
You should also trail NCAR trails (National Center For Atmospheric Research)

In terms of animals that people bring, mostly just dogs. As for wild animals, you can see lots of squirrels, birds, and other small critters while walking the trail. There are of course other bigger wild animals like deer and predators, but the Chautauqua trail system is so popular that you are unlikely to see them unless you go hiking in during the slow seasons or trek further afield to the more remote trails.

the 2/3 rd flatiron trail is super cool! would be very hard with a dog because you have to rock climb a section. The views are so worth it though. Great video btw!
