Jammu Kashmir is one of the most dangerous regions of the world. There is an undeclared war, and daily guerrilla raids are powered from the border of India and Pakistan.
It is also a region of high mountains that hold the finest sapphires in the world. They are of a blue velvet color whose sweetness and beauty has no equal in the world of gemstones.
Since the split between the two countries, and before this expedition, no westerner has visited this mine.
This film will takes you on an extraordinary expedition: 25 quarries, 5 yaks traversing the High Himalayas; and 150 miles on foot between 3500 meters and 6000 meters (11,000-19,685 feet)... It reveals the extraordinary measure it took to get into the mine, and most notably demonstrates that this is where these rare sapphires are always found.
The expedition starts in the Zanskar Valley; after having passed the Umasi La (5900 meters) in the Himalayas, you will discover the verdant valley of Cashmere.
After several days of walking to reach the summit of the mountain, the Padder mine emerges at 4500 meters; before accessing this mine, there is a police station made of a few stones piled on each other for shelter and few men an inhabited village, called Sumchan.
In this mine, three tents protect all the bare necessities for ten men who work at this vertiginous altitude a few months per year during the summer.
The geologist responsible for this operation, you will enter into the mines with a torch in hand to show you the vein.
You will understand how these exceptional stones are transported on foot by crossing the various hazards such as guerrillas, weather, and other unexpected predators.
Immerse yourself in the Buddhist traditions of these regions; you will see the consecration of a Buddha in the temple of Karsha.
Obviously, the road to sapphires does not stop there. It is Delhi where we find jewelers and lapidaries who are cutting and mounting these stones into jewelry.
Then this film will take you deep into the universe of Maharajas of Jaipur, Kashmir and especially their jeweler who now has the most exceptional of stones and gems; especially Gem Palace with its owner, Sanjay Kaslival.
You will finally enter into the secrets of buyers and creators of the grand house. Place Vendôme, Boucheron.
I've been a collector of gemstones, both crystals and cut stones, since I was 12 years old. Now I'm 74. This is by far the most interesting and informative hour long documentary on the subject of gems I have ever seen. Kudos to Patrick Voillot for making it.
I love his videos.

Hi Nicholas are you a gemologist?
Agreed. Wonderful documentary. Thank you for sharing 😊
I feel the same!! I started watching one of his videos then went down a rabbit hole of gem knowledge on more videos 😂. The way he goes over the history and how the sell of these gems can branch out between so many ppl , very interesting!
Braving all dangers & odds , this documentary has been made...hats off to the makers of this documentary...

Back in the 90s, I stopped a lady once because I saw the color of her sapphire ring from a distance! I said "Kashmir"...yes? She smiled and said she'd inherited it from a grandmother or great-grandmother and it indeed was old Kashmir. When you see one in person, you KNOW! There's a glow that's indescribable. ✌️💙🕊🌿💫🌠
Sir I am from Paddar, Kishtwar J&K, from where these Sapphires are mined, it's a beautiful documentary I can see many of my relatives in this documentary. Thanks
Just wanted to add that these mines are not in Kashmir it's in Jammu region it's just that the outsiders and Maharajah of J&K named it so because of facsination for Kashmir
Right.... its kishtwar ....padder
I can buy .
Reply me
You are right, it is Jammu.
bhaiya sumchan google maps mai show nahi kar raha ye jagah kaha par hai aur iska naam kya hai
@@arslangul6872 when did chenab valley become part of historical Kashmir valley, Chenab valley has been historically an Independepent pahari kingdom with different principalities of Kishtwar, Ramban and Baderwah, it was the migration of Kashmiris in large no to this area during the great famines of Kashmir which altered the local population. And about Paddar from where these Sapphires are mind it doesn't even have any similarities with either Jammu or kashmir this area is geographically and culturally more close to Himachal and Ladakh and has been historically part of chamba region before zoravar Singh annexed it. The language and culture of paddar is totally different from kishtwar valley, then i think simply these Sapphires should havd been called Paddar Sapphire thats it.
Its founded in paddar area of Kishtwar which is hilly and beautiful place.
Im from kishtwar too it also have places like brahama peak i love driving around all places.
Fantastic sharing video, thanks 😍😍😇🇲🇨♥️
Mau Kashmir sapphire??

A very fine look in to the culture and world of this wonderful gemstone, Evan in the most remote places people are speaking excellent
English .
The Indian government has done remarkably well to it's citizens in providing educational scholarships to people in far flung and remote areas like in Ladakh. Those people are Ladakhis and some have studied in some of India's finest schools in Chandigarh, Delhi, Dehra Dun , Bangalore etc like Cambrian Hall, La Martiniere Boys College etc. Many are college graduates. Therefore their skills in the English language.
Amazing what people do for vanity ,beauty and money .Great video ,extremely informative.
I am gems hunter from Pakistan. Gret to see this documentary.
Great documentary, I am from IndiaI & run an online astrology business but never knew about most of the things, Thanks Sir for this learning experience.
Yes. The Emerald. Looks very nice.
The audio needs to be remixed with a voice over at a higher level, and the miscellaneous background clutter ambient noises softer.
Beautiful,everything is beautiful,Ma Shall Allah
Wow... amazing difficult work for such hardy men. Blessings and protections be upon them as they work in such trying conditions.
Great documentary. I've been in love with gemstones since a teenager; How lucky you are! Liked and subscribed.

Great video. I would however recommend working on the audio mixing a bit more. There were multiple parts throughout the documentary where the narrator can barely be heard over people talking or singing.
Very beautiful I learned something new and it’s all amazing thank you for sharing

Nice documentary, but I had problems with hearing the muffled talking of the narrator over the loud sounds in the background and the subs was not helpful.
Yeah honestly it's insanely distracting. I'm hoping it goes away somewhat before the end...
Thanks for best information video

Wonderful documentary
In watching many documentaries on Everest, they did a study using scans, x-rays, etc…of the Sherpa ppl and compared them to ppl from other countries. They found the Sherpa had differences in their body that made it easier for them to breathe at higher altitudes
I been studying Gemstones strong I read "Gems Of The World" a (2008) copyright, for myself by Cally Oldershaw 3 years in a row, once in 2017, once in 2018, and twice this year in 2019 great book, even though it was copyrighted 11 years ago, but I study on wikipedia I'm striving for taking up gemology. This documentary is inspiring though love it.

Good Morning Kelly... Again....Thanks NYPD
I read the books gifts of the gemstone Guardians and Love is in the earth and sold gemstones and crystals in the early nineties, I quit after a few years, simply because of the pilliaging of such stones by western world pirates and the people we used to get them... my deepest gratitude forever to all those before us and over the century's that worked hard to please the western pocket.

Amazing Documentary but now it must be changing because origins of Kashmir Blue Sapphire is based on Paddar Village of Kishtwar District which is located in Jammu Division..
Thank you bro,, liked and subscribed.
I'm really enjoying all of your documentaries! Very informative👍
At present, some of the best and largest Sapphires are found in Sri Lanka, including the ‘Star of Adam’ ( the largest Star Sapphire ever found, at 1,400 carats) and the ‘Blue Belle of Asia’ (highest ever paid for a Blue Sapphire). Other historic Sri Lankan (or Ceylonese) Blue Sapphires include the Stuart Sapphire (on the British Crown), the inaccurately named Star of India and Star of Bombay, and even the stone in Princess Diana’s (now Kate Middleton’s) engagement ring.

I was interested in the history of aquamarine and where this stone came from. This was very enlightening and sad to see the struggles that these people go threw to harvest these stones. I just was interested in buying an emerald cut aquamarine ring. Your stories on emerald history and tanzanite history are mine boggling too.

After watching this, the ruby one and the one about India’s ship-graveyard, I’m officially more happy to live in rural western New York than EVER. I chill and play guitar and make jewelry and text girls and write in my spare time, these kids carry the family on their back at 13, nah, I’m good. If only I could go over there and get a crew together and take them back here.... but then again, we all have our purpose in life

Bengal, Kashmir and Punjab were all partitioned. I am an astro-gemologist.
Full of fallacies, first geographical naming & then demographical; everytime he is saying all are the Muslims, although majority of them are Hindus & Buddhists. These mines are in Paddar region of Jammu Province, District Kishtwar. We live here, we know the facts. At least you should accompany a local guide. Poor References.
Can you share bit more details on the address. I want buy one directly from the mines. People in cities are cheating by charging high on low quality gems. Please help me
