Thank you so much. At 62, I've been here all my life with these symptoms. I haven't found a doctor to help. Many different meds only make me worse. The last one gave me a script for Cymbalta, I spent two months in bed wishing to just die, not by my hands, just dissappear into nothing!! It's been tough 😢
Wondering how the symptoms are measured. So, the DSM gives a guideline in giving a diagnosis. But how are the guidelines measured. Meaning: the feeling of emptiness is something that quite a lot of people can feel, people can be impulsive or have a bad self image. But at what point does the symptoms tip the scale for a bdp diagnoses?
The criteria needs to get a rating of 2 in the SCID-5-PD: Enduring pattern that deviates from the norm Enduring pattern is inflexible across broad range of situations Pattern leads to significant distress or impairment Pattern is stable and traced back to at least adolescence or early childhood Pattern is not explained by other disorder Pattern not attributed to substance People through these PD labels around but when really looking into that, to receive a BPD/NPD/ASPD/HPD/etc you need to have severe mental problems.
As Hiaslayer indicated, there needs to be a persistent/pervasive nature, to meet full criteria. There are scales like the SCID-5-PD and other more BPD specific inventories, but at the end of the day, they’re surveys that are not perfect , it takes some longitudinal observation to know if one has certain features (which many of us do) vs the full syndrome that’s the core of what’s causing dysfunction, aka, will still come down to a judgement call. To be more pragmatic, whether one meets the “full” criteria or only partially, if there’s enough dysfunction , the important thing is to engage in appropriate therapy to address the symptoms
@@AndrewKimMD would you say that symptoms that only come out in family court (emotional abuse of the children to regulate emotional needs, e.g. abandonment fear regulation, frantic efforts to avoid abandonment by using kids to make false allegations) would not lead to a diagnosis as long as the symptoms are only within the court setting. My ex seemed “normal” (I felt there was something but definitely not BPD diagnosis material) but as soon as there was a threat of “losing” the kids (I wanted 50/50) she went full blown BPD (splitting, projective identification, omnipotence, skewed reality, etc). The clinician in our case after three years following the case never made the diagnosis, however diagnosed the emotional abuse of the children. Would be interested to hear your view.
I do this, I thought it’s just acting.. like when around my Dad, I’m like a good little girl again-no cussing, standing still listening, agreeing with him.. but around the guys, friends, family, coworkers, I’m different.
That’s normal. We adapt to different situations. I can be classy and hood, depending where I’m at and who I’m with. My exhusband was in finance and we take millionaires out to dinner. But we both grew up in the hood.
My wife was diagnosed with BPD about a year ago. She’s been having DBT for about 6 months. My question is, how will improvements be measured? I see no change in any of her symptoms although she says she feels better.
Great video. Thank you so much. My 19 yr old daughter has BPD & her Dad & I went through a terrible divorce & marriage. He had addictions, lying, cheating, affairs...the works. Yet she accuses me that we both hurt her. Other times she wants nothing to do with him but then next thing he's 'amazing' again. I've had her cut me off & block me many times the last 3 years. I'm not perfect but was definitely the stable parent. I'm exhausted from dealing with her
anxiety/panic attacks can definitely be a way that duress manifests, and also, BPD is not exclusive of having other co-morbid mood/anxiety disorders happening at the same time as well.
Thank you for this video! I have a friend who exhibits all 9 of these symptoms. I have suspected she has BPD for a while but she is undiagnosed. She is having a very hard time with relationships, coping with her environment and is persistently expressing suicidal ideations. Is there a way that I can help? I’m afraid that it’s not appropriate for me to suggest asking her therapist about BPD, but if I don’t, I don’t know if she will ever get proper treatment.

I hope you find the right coping mechanisms and see improvement in your life
Never knew it is a treatable condition- super interesting!
Definitely is. Just wish access too good therapists was improved in our country.
neither did I.
Wow, this was the best explanation of BPD. Love the nuances you gave too.
I was misdiagnosed as having BPD when I'm actually just autistic. I hear this happens to a lot of other females too.
I'm both, it's a hyperactive, hypersensitive amygdala

Do the symptoms cause your partners to eventually run off? Do friends and family eventually avoid you? How many people have run away?
I change personalities when I am around different people. I become different according to whom I am interacting with.

Thank you for this video. I was just diagnosed today and this made me feel a bit better about it, Dr. Kim
Excellent video, thank you.
Thank you. Early Happy New Year to you Lisa !

Thank you that was meant for me.
Thank you.
are you ParlayDoc on twitter as well? Just stumbled upon your channel but I have been following you on X for years!
Yes. Lol. That is me. Content creation in numerous areas of interest.
Sometimes, watching these videos, I think I have traits of the diagnosis being discussed 😆
Oh, just got to this part 26:10

My sister had bpd she had terrible panic attacks with echolalia.

Ever see somebody drive themselves nuts all by themself?
👍
My original comment is gone.

She’s lucky to have someone who cares, rare theses days.
I say help, or suggest to her, at least you will feel you did something…. 🤍
