@@eclipseyyyyy1 I read a theory that he does it to control his urges as a fate. So just like how LaLa (the Unwed Bride) sews wedding dresses and clothes to stop her urge of trying to marrying someone new, because it will eventually end in heart break, Jacks might eat the apples to stop himself from kissing - and therefore killing - someone (to find his true love).
I think LaLa also talks about how the urge to succumb to their fate becomes worse the longer they go without it and Jacks eats a lot of apples when he's with Evangeline 😃

I don’t know if anyone has said this yet. BUT I HAD THE MOST MASSIVE EPIPHANY when you opened the first page of the book and mentioned it was Evangeline’s letter to herself. There will be a third book and that letter will come into play when she finds it. Unfortunately, it reads more in the favor of Apollo and not Jacks. But it does mention the prophecy and the arch so it should spawn Evangeline’s interest in uncovering her memories. Not to mention the last broken heart scar among many others questions to be answered for.

Imagine if the person jacks choses for her to kiss in order to collect his debt is him..... This will be a series there are soo many unanswered questions.... Aurora valor and jacks certainly have a history...

The Ballad of Never After was fantastic, by far the best book Garber has written so far in my opinion.
Just finished TBONA and omg girl... I did see Stephanie hinting at a 3th book and at this point I'm just waiting for the announcement because I just can't live with that ending forever, literally so frustrating. Prayers for the third book to come as fast as possible!

Once upon a broken heart and The ballad of never is such vibe for books. I mean those are like magical things for me. The cliffhanger SG left in the ballad of never was shocking. I was dying after that end.

The wine cellar thing was driving me nuts too!! I literally went back to search the past books bc I was SO confused that they kept mentioning it and I couldn’t remember it at all …and then the explanation of it was towards the end🤡 Team Xander and Nash only🙌🏿 I haven’t really liked Jamison(Jameson?) at all, I liked Grayson in the first but his character turned very weird in the second and third books and I’m not sure why buttt after those two I didn’t like him either. The whole obsession those two had with that girl was so weird to me.
The wine cellar scene happened off the book. So its not actually written in the books.

I read a lot of YA fantasy, and none of my friends do (or they don't read in english, so they have to wait until the translated version comes up), so always when I finish reading and I really can't find anyone to see if they had similar feelings (and my husband also worries about me when I'm so devastated about a book ending). Thank you! Also, my version of TBONA ends like yours and I was mind-blown when you suggested that there might be different versions out there somewhere (that would be really cruel to the readers, but in line with the whole style of the book).

So I just finished the Ballad of never After, and I am so happy my reaction was just like yours. I got to the The End and was like what and then noticed there were more pages. I was thinking, hey it's just like a bonus chapter or something and then I got to the next part that repeated Chapter 44 and I started screaming. When I finished the book I needed to see what your reaction was to see if it was the same. OMG, I need book 3 now! A few more months!
Babel is definitely not a book for everyone because of its pacing, themes, and writing style. I loved it, some people won't. I feel like it's something for the dark academia classics reading girlies😅
Also, necause you mentioned it is telling more: I feel like RF Kuang wanted this book to read like a classics, because a lot of classics tell things of the past more.
TRUE , Babel is literally one of my all time faves! Considering I'm an Indian, I felt the need of showing the actual colors of "the british empire". As a person who loves literature and languages and feels sad that the only language we are exposed to at school is english (and our second and third language, but kinda less) despite having such a rich heritage, literature and culture. I think this wouldve been relatable to asians as a whole.

Your critique of Babel was really great. I loved it and so far it is one of my favorite books of the year. But I also thought there was a section that was too much of an info-dump and instead of being dialogue or action, was more the history of the situation. Necessary for the understanding of why there was a secret society in the first place but still a slog to read. It felt like this section could have been shortened without losing much of the reasons for the action. The characters were terrific. I also found that a slower reading of it helped get through some of the inaction. Jess Owens suggested this and it made the experience better imo.

I read Poppy Wars because it showed up in recommended for Fantasy and oh boy does it deliver! Girl read it! Very similar colonization themes through out the series with of course a Fantasy element. Poppy Wars wrecked me in a good way! I’m reading Babel now because R.F Kuang is just so good and because u went on about it for a few videos lol 😂

*Spoilers * Just finished -6:48- 8:25-sooooo relatable- I’m just gonna say - you got me started on this series- no regrets but also kinda flipped when I too realized I only had 50 pages and the sh*t was not wrapping up - I have so many ideas on where this could go but also like how much longer could this last book be? Like will Jacks have to make her fall in love with him all over? Who is her “husband”? I’m scared she’s gonna see her jacked up stepsister again!! Also Luc?!
P.S my version ends with Chaos/Castor gets his helm removed- kills Evangeline on accident- Jacks (in his POV) uses the stones to go back in time (instead of going back to Donatella) he brings a “snack” for Chaos- tells Eva to get lost she walks away heartbroken Apollo find her- steals her memories of everything- then a brown eyed male who declares he is her husband - scoops her up and says he will never let her go- those are the last words

I've been hearing about it for over a year online and finally caved and started Gideon the Ninth and I think it might be one of the most fascinatingly written sci-fi/fantasy novels I've ever read. Cari, I’ve read babel and I didn’t have the same issue as you w the apps and still felt it was a bit too long… I didn’t love it but it was okay. I felt like as you said, the first part was too descriptive plus it felt like an excuse to write lectures… like she kinda brushes through the first three years. AND I AGREE AND THE EMOTIONAL PARTS like I cry so much w books and this one didn’t make me cry ONCE.
The poppy war trilogy is also about the opioid crisis in china and its civil wars, it's been very interesting to learn about, school failed me as well. The second book has a colonial nation that shows up and raises lots of dilemmas about sacrificing dignity and autonomy in order to get their technology.
My ballad pages is 400 pages! And my heart is in pieces 😭😭😭

I finished this June 1rst and I literally was staring at the ceiling for like 30 minutes and proceeded to deep dive into theories and posts and videos, anything I could find! I have gone back to reread quotes and now I have to wait til October!

Ballad of Never After absolutely destroyed me 😭😭😭 like I think there are a lot of books that have made me cry, but very few that have made me absolutely bawl like this book did. I was ugly crying. I remember seeing SG’s Instagram story a couple of months ago saying that she wasn’t going to tell us if it was a duology or a trilogy until after the book came out, and I absolutely love her but this is too cruel 🥲🥲🥲 I hope she relieves our suffering soon.

i got the audiobook and ebook for babel at the same time from my library and listened/read them together and i realized the ebook was missing the footnotes which were read in the audiobook. seems like a major error for a big publication 😬 but i guess footnotes aren’t that common in fiction. anyways the footnotes didn’t change the plot or story at all, just added to it
if you were reading in LIbby I've noticed sometimes the footnotes break! Had that happen with a book that I *knew* had footnotes but somehow they weren't showing in the ebook.
my personal most anticipated book of 2022 is "As Long As the Lemon Trees Grow" by Zoulfa Katouh. It's a book set in syria written by a syrian-canadian author. I per-ordered the UK edition, which comes out tomorrow, but the US edition is already out and it's killing me to have to wait.

As someone who ended up DNF’ing the poppy war for the reasons you mentioned you struggled with Babel, it seems RF Kuang’s writing style will probably illicit the same reaction from me if I try reading Babel 😅 At least if I try reading it now, my expectations will be more realistic so I appreciate the honest reaction!
