Knowing at least what sounds like Greek letters is a helpful thing. Gamma and Chi are Greek letters, though, I can tell you. It's definitely a reference to the idea of a fraternity, whether there really was one called this specifically that the writer knew of or was a member of, is something I sure don't know, but can probably be looked up, maybe.

    • @dck6546
      @dck6546 4 года назад +2

I've always taken the "Gamma Chi" as a drug reference, rather than a fraternity. The Greek letters resemble the "rx" abbreviation that's commonly used for prescription drugs. Steely Dan's often a bit cryptic with their lyrics, so I could be way off. So, the "Dandy of Gamma Chi," whether referring to himself as being a weed dealer or just the guy with the good stuff on-hand, adds context to the "fine Columbian" line in the chorus.

This song came out in 1980 and Donald Fagen, the singer, was born in 1948 which would make him about 32 years old at the time of writing the lyrics about a nineteen year old woman.
So the difference is 13 years which isn't all that bad "morally", but bad enough to have a pop cultural gap.

Gotta be weird listing to "Hey, Nineteen" when you're only sixteen...one needs some adult "cultural" references.
Assuming you've been given the skinny on how babies are made, some "liner notes":
Another culturally notable '70s song in the same vein was Jimmy Buffett's "Why Don't We Get Drunk (and Screw)?"
A few years earlier (1977), "Margaritaville" by that same J. Buffett topped the charts and so did the drink. Between it and Rupert Holmes' "Pina Colada Song", our nation's bartenders were forced to slave away measuring, pouring, and mixing their young asses off.
That's when they first started getting tipped.
("Margaritaville" is semi-essential listening. "WDWGD(&S)?" is just for lols -- an excellent era parody of a typical country-western love song.)
    ---------------------------------
Cuervo Gold was just as commonly taken in ritual straight shots "con sal y limon" -- often in the course of drinking games/contests (think 80 proof beer-pong) -- followed by much hell-yelling, dancing on tables, kissing of cowboys/girls/cows, shooting out of lights, etc..
(That's how we OG boomers rolled. Also how one of your parents may have been conceived.)
    ----------------------------------
When "Hey 19" came out, 'fine Columbian' coulda meant either weed or cocaine...both were illegal, immoral, and of course highly valued.
    ----------------------------------
A seminal artist of the Motown Sound and R&B history, Aretha Franklin is essential listening! Four of Her Majesty's hits from 1967-8 will give you some footing (reaction optional):
"R-E-S-P-E-C-T", "Think", "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman", and "Chain of Fools".
    ---------------------------------
The Soul Survivors were a 60s NYC-Philly R&B outfit that only cats like Don and Walt would remember until they were mentioned in this song. Afterwards, they returned to Zager and Evansesque obscurity.

    • @PogueMahone1
      @PogueMahone1 4 года назад +1

WARNING: "Time Out of Mind" (from "Gaucho", 1980) is yet another superb Dan cut about the recreational use of narcotics -- in this case, opium.
Let me point out the obvious: The Dan was NOT known for their children's songs!
They were Lords of both Music and Vice...which is why all us old fucking horn-playing degenerates love 'em so!
Seriously dude, wait until you're of legal age to try ANYTHING detailed, implied, or suggested in ANY Steely Dan lyric (except maybe the Szechuan dumplings at Mr. Chow's, but you haven't heard that song yet).
      Over 21, it's all good...or bad...or both. You decide.
Even then, heed The Dan's advice from another song you haven't heard yet:
"Don't ever do it without your fez on."

There's another intelligent band that quit touring to become a studio band, XTC. They lasted from 1978 to 2000 and made 14 albums. They started as a punkish band and ended up crafting some very smart pop albums. Everything from the 1983 "Mummer" right up to their last "Wasp Star (Apple Venus Volume 2)". "Mummer" is my favorite, a little darker than the rest. "Skylarking" from 1986 was the most accessible but the follow-up "Oranges & Lemons" scored even higher in the charts. Give them a try.

The mood of these lyrics always conveyed to me that this a guy, a 30ish rock star, in a social situation where a younger girl is flirting with him. He can't relate to her at all, and isn't going to go there. BUT...part of him kinda wants to, to recapture his youth. They leave it open ended, I think, about how it turned out. Because it isn't really about what happens, it's about a guy feeling old when he's 30. The role of the girl in the song is just to represent that disconnect between the young person he was and the older man he's become.

Donald Fagen was born in 1948, hence he was 19 yrs old in 1967 - Gamma Chi is a fraternity, though I'm not sure he was in one while studying Literature at Bard College, NY. Yes, the song is about a 30 yer old out on a date w/ a 19 yr old, so the Culture Shock shows - she likely a Disco-era young woman and hence too young to have known about know Motown, or 1960s Soul music or the 1960s for that matter. But as it turns out. they have at least one thing in common: The enjoy The Cuervo Gold (tequilla) and 'The Fine Colombian' (Cannabis). PS: I say 'sweet things from Boston' is a reference to LSD, which by 1967 was also distributed in liquid form, dropped in sugar cubes. 1967 was the year of The Summer of Love. Donald talked has talked briefly and more or less openly about experimenting w/ Psychedelics right before going to and while at College. Boston is the place of Harvard University, where early Psychedelic pioneers, Psychologists Timothy Leary, Richard Alpert ran then-legal, psychological experiments w/ LSD. When i was a musicseller in the 90's, as a way to get into jazz coming from a rock/metal perspective, i would suggest something like Return To Forever's Romantic Warrior: a mix of prog, jazz, rock and R&B. As for what the song's about: he's getting in his 30's - he simply wakes up to the fact somebody who looks like he could hit if off with, is, in fact, no longer "avalaible" to him, a generation away from his, can't even relate to the same icons of music.

Daniel, if you continue with Steely Dan you should explore some songs from the first 6 albums, all great. This album is good but in my opinion, below the first classic 6. The problems before and during the recording are well documented but they were still able to put out an exceptional album. Like Rush, many of their songs are available with lyrics. Steely Ben channel has lyrics and cool graphics that will add to your reaction. Gamma Chi is a fraternity house. The song is about how he realizes that he's getting older and in a way doesn't have much common ground with someone that much younger. Reminds me of situation years ago when a guy was going out with a much younger girl and she was surprised to find out that Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings. Could be a wake-up call. I tell everyone that they should just listen to and enjoy SD, not try to analyse it, especially after 1 quick listen. Some people listen o this for 40 yrs. and still don't have a clue.

Gamma Chi, pronounced "Kai", greek letters symbolizing a fraternity. Now if he's
established then he's probably in his early 20's a junior or senior. He moved down
to Scarsdale, but how significant a flash forward is it?
He knows about the Queen of Soul, these nineteen year olds don't. Whether there
is an enormous age difference or not, there is a cultural one. I don't think the gulf
chronologically pushes it into the skeevy range. What is troublesome is their in-
    ability to relate.
She's ignorant but he's attracted to her and the "cool" that she packs so what to do?
Tequila shots and strong herb are great equalizers.

Yes. Daniel, I believe the song is about an older man and 19 year old girl. Maybe an encounter at an adult pub or bar. I don't think a 19 year old person is allowed in a local bar. Does not specify how old the man is, although he mentions alcohol and drugs. She probably did reject the man. The man left the bar to enjoy alcohol and drugs by himself. I always loved Hey 19. Great music composition. Great lyrics. He's attracted to her. The line: Sure looks good. Mmm. The line: Skate a little lower. Don't know what that means. Also how does he know she's 19? 🎶🔥🍷🍹

Daniel - you're amazing. It's so much fun to watch you learn these songs! I want to yell out to the screen sometimes - "Fine Columbian" is Cocaine!" - and I think you're right about Donald Fagen is he is indeed a little skeevy. Brilliant. Borderline. But yes, sometimes skeevy. Check out "Cousin Dupree" and "Pixaleen" for the same type of thing. Both great songs but, again, a little upsetting in terms of the treatment of an older man with a younger (but still "legal") girl.

Sort of perverse, huh?

I'm not convinced that the fine Colombian is cannabis. It could be cocaine, which makes more sense to me. In 1980 cannabis was a common thing, but cocaine was becoming plentiful and was more glamorous. You had to "connected" and you had to be somewhat wealthy to obtain coke on a regular basis. I think cocaine would have been more enticing to a 19 yr old. Yep, getting old. (Who am I kidding? I'm already there.)

So, to me he's an older cat trying to be a realist in that attraction never really goes away, however , he mentions an iconic singer and she doesn't know who she is. I grew up listening to Steely Dan. I'm 61 yrs old, and I still marvel at how amazing this band is! For at least a couple of albums, they used a number of jazz musicians. Not because they're better (they kinda are), but because it gave the music a different flavor - Larry Carlton on guitar, Steve Gadd on drums... just to name a couple.
