The series is an original script based on the real-life story of Widow An Wu (安吴寡妇), who was known as the god-daughter of Empress Dowager Cixi.
[Synopsis] Zhou Ying is sold to the powerful Shen family by her foster father, yet successfully escapes her childish and bratty master Shen Xingyi by sneaking into merchant Wu Pin's palanquin. After a failed business collaboration that resulted in Shen Yuesheng's (Xingyi's older brother) death, the Shen family suspects that Wu Pin was the culprit behind Yuesheng's death. Xingyi then injures Wu Pin by using a club to hit his forehead multiple times, causing Wu Pin to fall into a coma. After the bride-to-be's father has a last-minute change of heart, Zhou Ying is married to Wu Pin in an effort to dispel bad luck. Miraculously, Wu Pin wakes up on the same night, and the couple share a happy few months together. Wu Weiwen, the patriarch of the family also agrees to educate her in the matters of commerce after witnessing her remarkable business acumen.
Unfortunately, Wu Pin is poisoned to death after getting too close to the truth of the failed business collaboration, and Wu Weiwen's imprisonment and death a couple of months later leaves the entire household in disarray. Zhou Ying is determined to turn around their fortune by investing in a cloth factory in Shaanxi. She gains the trust of the Wu family and starts from scratch. Meanwhile, Shen Xingyi has also decided to turn over a new leaf, and starts anew in Shanghai. Shen Xingyi's love for Zhou Ying is initially unrequited, though she eventually acknowledges that she has developed romantic feelings for him. However, romantic affections become of little importance in the face of political upheaval and personal revenge - Shen Xingyi joins the anti-Qing reformist movement and plots to kill the Empress Dowager Cixi while Zhou Ying avenges Wu Pin and her father-in-law's deaths by taking Shen Sihai and Du Mingli head on. After much struggle, Zhou Ying ultimately establishes a business empire, and also lends Empress Dowager Cixi a helping hand when she escapes to Jingyang.

No you got it wrong. To protect her in case he failed to kill the Royals, so that is a cover up. He cannot marry her because his father swear that he (the father ) will appeal to Wang Yeh to behead if Xing Yi connect with the widow again.

Shen Xingyi is not satisfied with reform, he want a complete revolution to get rid of emperor. By the way, Empress dowager was never against reform. She let the emperor to run away empire himself for 10 years without interfere. She just found out that the reforms want to make a coup and kill her, so she take the action.

None of us really know what happened honestly. She could have been for or against it but we'll never know the full truth, the accounts of history are cloudy with muddy waters.
Shen Xingyi thought revolution and killing royal family so form a new Chinese that is not under empire/royal family... Country that based on people's power...
@@mandya6697 No, Empress dowager Cixi was retired from 1889 when the emperor was old enough to rule the empire by her own right. She lives in summer palace, and wish to enjoy her retirement life there to the end. She herself neither pro or against the reform. Her only request was to maintain the Qing dynasty as her duty. The emperor was her only adopted son, she raised him when he was 3 years old some kind like Huaixin to Zhou Ying. PS I think this plot was a quit good move from the writters, they connect story from a commoners with the royal family. Both became widow at young age, had a son but died at young age though Zhou Ying didn't deliver her son. Then both adopt a son from their closest nephew at young age and want to pass the whole family to him. I think the writer want to imply something about the last half story between Huaixian and Zhou Ying. Cixi definitely has strong affection with him(just as Zhou Ying with Huaixian), so of course she want to and has to pass the power to him when he is old enough. But the young emperor and his reformers are not capable, they made a lot of mass and loss the China-Japan war in 1895 through which China own a war debt of 230 million tales to Japan. The chaos made a lot of people to against the emperor, and they went to Cixi for help. But she didn't take any action because she still want her son to solve everything by himself. At this critical moment, some of the reformers suggest a coup and arrest the Cixi so that they could take all the power and nobody dares to against them. Unfortunately the plot was leaked out. It made the empress Cixi to make her hard and final decision to take action first and lost her favor to the emperor.
Why kill the emperor and empress dowager? Go after the evil prince that caused all this suffering. I'm pretty sure stabbing someone counts as hurting them. Not the whirling dervish cameraman again. :(

I dont't like Shen Xinyi character. The change is too drastic. I still prefer Zhou Ying with Wu Pin. They are a perfect couple and business partner. So sad she lost his child.

The ending was so crazy.... I mean all this while the story was about a strong woman overcoming her trials and coming out on top.... Why even introduce the revolutionary storyline in the last minute... Maybe i am saying this coz Shen Xingyi died after....

I agree with you. Shen XingYi had one clear goal throughout the drama. Just one goal, to make Zhou Ying HIS maid again. Lol Okay he just wanted her back. Then all the sudden he was exposed to people talking about reform (not even recruited) and then he suddenly went rogue and suicide as if she didn’t matter anymore. You’re left with, what the heck? Reminds me of GOT when Daenerys started destroying King’s Landing for no reason. If they had showed us the process, the planning, the reasons, the people he worked with, etc, it would make more sense but all we saw was him going away, coming back, then going away again and finally came back to commit suicide.
