  • In this Sydney Metro West Project Update video, I cover the demolition work that has just started to make way for the construction sites for the new Burwood North Station.
    I'll start with the larger construction site that is on the north side of the Parramatta Road. Buildings that will soon be demolished include the Pine Inn Hotel.
    I'll also show you other buildings that have been demolished (or will be soon) on Parramatta Road, Burwood Road, Burton Street and Esher Lane.
    I'll also cover the smaller construction site on the south side of the Parramatta Road.
    Burwood North Station will have two entrances, one on each side of the Parramatta Road. I'll reveal where these entrances are likely to be.
    Being quite close to the middle of the Sydney Metro West line, Burwood North Station will have a crossover junction to allow trains to terminate and switch tracks.
    Subscribe, so you don't miss out on future updates for the Sydney Metro West Project.

    COVID-19
    Most of my videos are recorded several weeks before being edited and uploaded. I always follow the government COVID-19 advice and requirements that applied on the day of filming. This is why you sometimes see me wearing a mask and at other times you don't. If you're watching this video during a Sydney lockdown, then please note that it was filmed at a time prior to these restrictions coming into effect.
    Accuracy
    I do my best to make the commentary in these videos as accurate as possible by checking facts on the internet and other sources. However, sometimes the information isn't available, so I'll use my railway knowledge and insight to explain something to the best of my ability. If accuracy is important, do check the comments, as other viewers will often pick up on things I've missed or any mistakes made. Also note that for older videos, things may change over time, causing some of the information to become out of date.
    Construction Sites, Maintenance Facilities and other Private Property
    All footage of construction sites, maintenance facilities and other private property is taken from a public vantage point. The only exception is if it's an open day or I have special permission to access the site. The iPhone's small lens and zoom function makes it easier to film through small gaps in hoardings or fencing, so it may look like I'm on site when I'm not! If you would like to know the exact filming location, then ask me in the comments.

    It's been quite a few years since I've had a drink at The Pine Inn, probably the mid 1990's. From around 1986 I was a regular there every Thursday night for a few years, as were quite a few others. It was a fun night out, drinks back then were a lot cheaper than these days, and there was a pretty good bistro as well. The Thursday night pool competition was always fun, even if there were the usual winners that could hustle just about anybody. Some pretty good memories for me, but as I said, it was a long time ago. I can imagine a lot of the people from those days would be a bit sad to see it gone.

    Hello Paul, I came across your channel as a recommendation based off of other transit/train channels I follow. Watching this from far away (Seattle to be precise) and only having visited Sydney once before in 2016, I've found the updates on the Sydney Metro progress fascinating to watch. You've shown the changes from the ground level and given me a better idea of just what's going in, what it's replacing, and how it will affect the metro area in general. It's symbolic to me that many of the businesses being replaced at this station development are in some way car-oriented, be they repair shops, detailing, or some place that owes its existence to car-centric culture. Thanks, and I hope to return to Sydney one day and see the progress on this for myself.

      Hi Jeff, awesome that you found my channel! It's always lovely to hear from international viewers such as yourself. Yes Parramatta Road is very car oriented, and it feels like a little win for public transport to see some of these going! For the Parramatta Metro Station, an entire multi-storey city carpark is being demolished to make way for the station! This will feature prominently when I put together the video for this station. Yes I hope you make it back to Sydney one day and get to experience these new transport projects for yourself!

      @@andyrob3259 actually car sales has been declining every year in Australia since 2016 with covid having an exaggerated affect on the numbers in the last two years.
      The demise of Holden surely is an indicator of the waning interest in car ownership in general. The trend will accelerate when transit options are more readily available in the future. It’ll be an essential part of our arsenal in combating the affects of climate change.

    Thanks Paul. Another excellent clip. I went to primary school not far from the site, so a few hazy memories for me. If I remember correctly, this was one of the 'might be' stations in the original scheme of things. Will be convenient for those in Concord and Canada Bay area, and to nearby Concord Oval (which is originally where I thought the station might be sited).
    If my understanding is correct it's also along where Bradfield's original line was supposed to run between the CBD and Parramatta (basically under / along Parramatta Rd corridor). It would have gone into Town Hall (platforms used now by Bondi Junction services), swung around under the CBD to the now disused centre platforms at St James, then separating into a loop out and back deep into the eastern suburbs. Instead we got the lines from Central to Strathfield increased from four to six. Much cheaper to construct, but fitting it into the corridor made those lines a bit curvier and slower.

    • @TransportVlog
      @TransportVlog  2 года назад

      Hi Franca, yes it is will be difficult for nearby residents whilst the work is taking place. However, Sydney Metro are very good at communicating planned work and especially noisy work. They are all listed here (www.sydneymetro.info/station/burwood-north-station) and you can also get them via email. Properties near metro stations are highly sought after, so prices will almost certainly increase. This often happens several years before the line opens. I saw this happen on the North West Line in places such as Castle Hill and Rouse Hill.

    • @davidlang1125
      @davidlang1125 2 года назад +1

      Hi Franca
      Here in California where driving a car is practically a birthright there’s often vigorous opposition to transit projects. They cite many reasons such as interference to existing traffic or noise or dust during construction. The impact on desirability of homes adjacent to stations are frequently brought during public hearings. In actual fact properties near transit stations command a premium.
      I attended meetings in my neighborhood prior to a light rail was constructed and the heated arguments were unforgettable. I’ve seen many of my neighbors who had voiced their opposition quite happily and routinely ride the trains! I’m tempted to ask them about their opinions these days especially about the values of their homes!

      Hi Nathan, Yes they do! I don't know much about road tunnels, but they never seem that deep to me, when I drive through them. The line at Burwood North will be around 30 metres underground, so that could well be deeper than the M4.

      Hi Patrick, It might be! Sometimes heritage buildings can still be demolished if it's going to dramatically affect a construction project. There are also different levels of heritage listings based on age, design and whether other similar buildings exist elsewhere. A good example is the former parcels office at Bankstown which I covered in my Bankstown update video. I did some quick research and it looks like the M4 tunnel is about 35 metres below ground in this area. The Sydney metro tunnels will be about 23 metres below ground, so will be above the road tunnel. Glad you're enjoying my updates.

    This is a huge project and will give rail access to areas that have never had it before but I must confess that I am baffled by the thinking behind this idea and why they wouldn't just integrate the existing heavy rail network. Even going so far as to put a station in North Burwood just fifteen minutes walk away from the existing Burwood station and not link the two lines. To travel to anywhere on this new line by train from Burwood, you will need to travel all the way into the city and out again or to Parramatta and switch lines. It seem ridiculous to me.

      Why put stations where there are already stations? If one of the points of building more rail is to get more people to use it, surely dispersing the stations throughout the places where people live , so they can get to them easier, is one way to do so . Burwood station is not the most convenient station to get to either. It’s not like the Suburban Rail & the Metro are not going to much the same places.

      Hi Mark, with any project like this, there are compromises to be made, especially between serving new areas (such as Five Dock, The Bays and Pyrmont) and providing interchanges with existing lines. To provide an interchange at Burwood would have probably resulted in the loss of a station at Five Dock or some tight curves to serve Five Dock which would lengthen journey times. What the new Burwood North station will do, is take the pressure off the existing Burwood Station. The North Strathfield station will also take the pressure off Strathfield Station. Hope this makes a little more sense.

      Hi Chevy, anything on Neich's Lane that is west of Burwood Road is staying, and the same goes for 29-45 Parramatta Road (as this is also west of Burwood Road). The tunnelling will be happening 20 to 30 metres below, so it shouldn't affect any of the buildings above it. Parra Rd has become a car oriented wasteland and it's ironic (or perhaps fitting) that these car related businesses are making way for a more efficient and eco friendly form of transit

      Yes it is! - It's a good win for public transport. In Parramatta, a whole multi-storey car park is being demolished for the Metro Station. This will feature in my Parramatta Metro Station video which I'll probably do during April.
