I'm not a man of many words, but I will say that I love your uploads and how you explain things that normally would get passed off as common knowledge. You're looking out for the little guy. Respect.
It is nice to have an accurate and clear explanation. Most times I've heard this explained, the explainer has- ahem!- distorted the facts. So it was good to hear it clearly, and to, sorry, gain knowledge.
I wanna thank you because of the way you've explained everything you make videos on, especially like this one, I did great on my physics sound and waves test.
I love how Colin explains guitar terminology in a simple, concise manner without being condescending in the slightest. I've learnt so much from these videos. Thank you CSGuitars.
Literally the first concise and understandable explanation for what gain actually is instead of the "Gain refers to amplification of a signal" textbook definition. Thanks man!
So now we need a video comparing the difference between "gain" and "volume" as it applies to amplifiers and effects! My understanding is that volume just increases the amount of current so that you can provide more power to a speaker, but you are probably more knowledgeable than I am on this matter
Dude. Why am I just now learning this wee bit of VALUABLE information? And why did it enter my brain so clean and uncluttered? Awesome I hit sub and am looking forward to more, NO BS, straight to the point tech talk such as this. Great vid and you have cool stuff.
I never knew that I didn't actually know what gain was haha, and that my friend is why I'm subbed to your channel!! The information you give and the clarity you supply it with is just perfect!!! Thank you for teaching even people who've been playing for years, something new about the gear that they love so much :)
Wow I never was able to understand the difference of gain and distortion. I knew they were different things from a technical standpoint but now I know 👍 Your explanation was pretty good.. just needed more gain... And less mids...
This is one of the first gear related videos in a while that I feel like I’ve really learned something, and it was also a “how did I not already know that?!” Type moment. Thank you.
Great explanation - never really thought about this before. Now I feel I truly understand why my MT-2 doesn’t sound quite right into a fender twin... it needs more gain!
I gotta say, I really enjoy your videos but I appreciate the ones where you are explaining the how and why of something, like this video. I have learned a lot about things I have been doing for the past 20-30 years (both right and wrong) and it really helps to understand a lot of these principles as new technology comes out. Thanks for doing what you do brother.
I really like the clear explanations, the simple diagrams, presented in plain language without the jargon. Any chance you can start doing the same for bass guitars?
Great explanation of gain! Really useful info to help guitarists talk to sound engineers, who may well talk in terms of gain and mean exactly what you said - how much the signal gains, not how much distortion a signal has 😀
It took me a decade to figure this stuff out for myself. I wish I had seen this video back then. It would have saved me a lot of stupid decisions and a lot of cash, lol. Clear & concise, the way I like it.
Thank you for the excellently clear description of what this confusing term actually means. Long time fan, great work as always Colin! :D All the gain \m/
To make things more confusing: many times gain is measured in Log(In/Out) instead of just the In/Out multiplier, if those multipliers reach large values.
So... you have an amp with separate volumes for each channel and a master volume for the final output. Which is better, cranking the channel volume and using the master to control overall volume or doing the opposite and using the channel volume to set overall volume and cranking the master? Oh I forgot to mention that the amp overdrive channel has separate gain and volume controls. I've been told that the Gain knob is not an extra volume knob :) Does the channel volume control have any effect on headroom? I've never though about what is happening to the signal in those different situations. Great info. I like the in the weeds explanations. Great channel, almost to 100K!
Superb video and a model of clarity. Great accent too, though as a ‘wegian (albeit now in Asia) mebbe I would say that ;). But one question - what is cascading gain? And is that what the Dumble amps were famous for?
Collin, I'm still waiting on that video talking about the difference between pickup locations! Come on. What do I have to do, donate to your patreon?.... Oh
fucking stellar explanation
I just "gained" some knowledge. Previously it was a little distorted. :P
Robert Mirabito Dude, thats clever . 🖒
Guy Will...
no its not
get out
Robert Mirabito yea, before I was a little fuzzy on the subject
20 years ago, we didn`t used the term gain. It was simply distortion.
I didn't understand a word... but I think I learned something today... now on to overdrive/distortion/fuzz
I'm not a man of many words, but I will say that I love your uploads and how you explain things that normally would get passed off as common knowledge. You're looking out for the little guy. Respect.
Christian Nelson well said man!
Whatever it is, I have a feeling I’m gonna need ALL of it
It is nice to have an accurate and clear explanation. Most times I've heard this explained, the explainer has- ahem!- distorted the facts. So it was good to hear it clearly, and to, sorry, gain knowledge.
This is the exact information I needed to take my death core flute playing to the next level. Thanks Colin!
So, gain is volume and I should max it out on my Line 6 Spider IV 15 watt combo? Then I should take away my mids, correct? Am I doing this right?
only if you don't want to be haired
Make sure you use a boss metal zone pedal, they're the best on the market right now
@@budgie825in fact he need two of them
Does gain has the same meaning for flutes?
No, the word you’re looking for is “Gay”
@@Iheartdgd say that to Ian Anderson
I wanna thank you because of the way you've explained everything you make videos on, especially like this one, I did great on my physics sound and waves test.

Dude, you’re videos are awesome - no bullshit, personable, unpatronising and genuinely informative. Nice one, and keep up the great work!
Literally the first concise and understandable explanation for what gain actually is instead of the "Gain refers to amplification of a signal" textbook definition. Thanks man!
It’s impressive how you’re able to condense so much knowledge into such concise and informative videos - great work as always

Not sure which one is more beautiful: the visualization, the explanation, or the man himself?
GAIN: is that knob which you should crank it all the way.
ALL THE GAEIN!!
NO MEDS!!

I like that you specify the difference between clipping and gain. Very concise! Great vid.
Holy shit this makes so much sense now. Thanks for the great content my guy.
This is one of the first gear related videos in a while that I feel like I’ve really learned something, and it was also a “how did I not already know that?!” Type moment. Thank you.

this teaching was one of the best I've watched ..thank u sir
Outstanding video. I hope we all see a day where people who can teach really well, like you, are able to make a living doing this. cheers.
Great video Collin! I learned more than in school
Oooohhhh forget my other comment, I wanna see a video of you talking about the Le Lead! I love that thing!
Excellent, clear lesson! Thank you; I'll be passing this one on to folks who don't get it.
I really like the clear explanations, the simple diagrams, presented in plain language without the jargon. Any chance you can start doing the same for bass guitars?
a clear and concise explanation of an often misused term. I can definitely use this to impress people at parties!

Very informative. Thanks!
By the way I've been wanting a more in depth explanation on this for a long time. Thanks a lot!
Great Job on the illustration
It took me a decade to figure this stuff out for myself. I wish I had seen this video back then. It would have saved me a lot of stupid decisions and a lot of cash, lol. Clear & concise, the way I like it.
Mr. Collin we need more such videos ( more in terms of electronics).
ALL THE GAIN
Thanks for this video. I really love these videos where you explain concepts, I really feel like I learn something from them.
Thanks man I had all the peices right but you helped me put them together!
Thank you for the excellently clear description of what this confusing term actually means. Long time fan, great work as always Colin! :D
All the gain \m/
So when's the new CSFlute video coming out?
Great video, man. You defined gain better than most guides I've read.
Wow! This realy cleared things up for me. Thanks!
Hell yeah! Took me damn long enough to finally understand what Gain is.
It's something we need MOAR of!!!!!!
Thank you. Very clear explanation. You helped me understand these terms.
Wow! That was enlightening and so well explained! So nicely done. Thank you for clarifying this tricky topic!
I cannot possibly thank you enough for this video.
Thanks Colin for these videos that are very useful ! It's always a pleasure to watch them.

It must have taken a while to edit this video, hats off man.
Great content, always good to see your notifications ! :)
This is such an awesome, informative video! Thanks!

Great channel. Love to listen to yoy talk and enjoy content a lot! Thanks Colin!
This is cool! Would like to see more Troublesome Terminology videos!!

Can’t lie - I knew all of this already. I just came here to listen to you, Colin
Thanks Professor!
Content always on point Colin! Can you add gain to a flute? Lol April fooled me!
great explanation.also known as the square wave
Excellent video! Keep this series up =)
I love your videos Colin 🤘😎🎸
Thank you, from Buenos Aires.
You're the best, man.
doesn't matter what it is, we need ALL THE GAIN!
NO MIDS!
Now I expect a video on Volume and Overdrive to go along with this video. :-)
This is wonderful! thank you
Love your videos. Always. Good stuff.
Incredible video thank you so much 😭
I don't understand gain much more than I used to, but now I know how to use it.
Like your videos. Please do one about "how to get rid of the sand in the tone".. A lot of people ask me that all the time.

Love this, more this, want this, please this
With enough gain, you can always trust that you'll be well haired. You're a treasure, Colin!
Superb video and a model of clarity. Great accent too, though as a ‘wegian (albeit now in Asia) mebbe I would say that ;). But one question - what is cascading gain? And is that what the Dumble amps were famous for?
Great video! Btw, what would the difference between gain and volume?
Thank you. Now we can turn to C.B. radio terminology. What is Squelch?
Great video, Colin! 👌👌
Thanks!
I’ve always thought gain meant the volume. Thanks for the clarification.
Collin, I'm still waiting on that video talking about the difference between pickup locations! Come on. What do I have to do, donate to your patreon?.... Oh
Informative!
I gotta ask... What's the little had on top of your Marshalls? The one with your logo and a nice bright tolex.
This dude takes something very boring and makes it very interesting. Hes so cool. That accent to.
Finally I get it, thank you very much!
Had to rewatch the ending, laughed a little more than I should've xD
