In the modeling community, this combination is often referred to as a "plastic weld" and you usually put the super glue down first and then dust it with baking soda. It's really cool to see how far this concept can be stretched.
another fun use with super glue is to mix it with talcum powder. make a mound of talcum powder with a dimple in top and add the super glue. mix it in a little at a time and you can make a paste and even get to a putty like consistency and it hardens up really nice while giving a decent amount of work time
To do SG molds, you should do a thin layer glue then dump your powder in there, let the dry powder fall back out and repeat. Build your layers that way and you will be fine. I have done this before and made some amazing crafts, dice included. I even made a weighted set this way.
Did this all the time in my jewellery course... *heats up silver to 600°c* me: *touches is* Yes I burnt a layer of skin off from my fingertip. 10/10 do not reccomend
Did some experiments with the stuff myself, and found that coating the entire inside of the mould with a generous amount of nail polish and letting it dry completely lets you then fill that with baking soda and superglue and it pops right out. You can add mica powders to the nail polish too for a colored surface.
Its funny they made this, I have been thinking about using hotglue in molds to make stuff like that XD I already use concrete in all my molds (works well with my tweaks), cant afford resin at all but still want to make stuff :P
Well, I once had an application where baking soda+superglue was better suited than resin. My children have a game where instead of dice they have to turn an arrow on a pace of cardboard - love a wheel of fortune (sorry for the weak explanation, I'm German and English is my third language). The axle for the arrow got lost but I could built a new one by layering small amounts of baking soda and drops of Ca. A little sanding and voila - spinning arrow and happy kids
I remember learning that the reaction has more to do with how fine the powder is than the baking soda itself, so I wonder if using just mica powder or other fine pigments (micro glitter???) with the super glue would have the same effect. Could be fun to play around with! cx

A few years ago, I remember seeing another RUclipsr using the mixture of superglue & baking powder on his projects. At one point of his videos he mentioned that the material did yellow overtime. I’m guessing it was about a year or two afterwards he showed one of his early projects and you could see the difference in color.
Considering that ramen noodles is often made with sodium carbonate, is this why we had a bunch of people "fix" things with noodles and super glue a couple of years back?
super glue reacts like this with quite a few organic compounds. It's why you can do a makeshift repair on a partially broken finger nail by super gluing a bit of the fabric/paper they make disposable tea bags out of over the break and then putting a few layers of nail strengthener or topcoat on. (best for when you just need a week or two of growth before you can file the damage away and not be in pain.)
You can get synthetic (maybe acrylic?) felt at some craft stores. If you soak that with thin superglue, it will set extremely fast and leave you with a very hard substance. Once I did this with several layers of the felt (all in one go), and then I sanded it down and shaped it in a cabochon shape, to essentially make a cheap fake gem. It turned out surprisingly good for my first time trying something like that. Anyhow, part of my goal was to fill in the space in the felt with a clear substance, to see how it would look with backlighting. It looked pretty cool! I never had time to do anything interesting with it though. Anyhow, thought you might be interested. Maybe you can find a better use for this than I did.

from an aircraft technician I was told, when a helicopter rotor blade had a chip or little crack, they have special tape to repair it, but they would first use baking soda with super glue to fill the gap/crack to seal it and then apply the tape. He said, you wont believe how strong this is.
I already know all the answers to your questions at the beginning but I'm still watching the entire video since I love your content. Although I have a few tips: You can use baking powder in place of baking soda if you want to reduce the heat generated. From my experience both produce the same strength at the end. Alternatively, you can use thinner layers to reduce heat but it can be tricky to ensure that the next layer adheres to the first. It'll still be strong but you can peel off a layer if you pick at it. I'm not sure what you'll need to do for a mold since it adheres to silicone, wood, metal, paper, fabric, ceramics, and other materials. Once dry it does sand very easily and would polish too if you wanted to do that. edit: all types of the glue will cure faster with a base added but you need to put the baking soda on top of the thicker stuff. Also certain versions of the glue will only cure at the surface regardless of how thick or thin it is. I have had a thin mixture only immediately harden at the surface while the gel version had no issues hardening all the way through immediately.
Well, I use wax molds (that I make with a 3018 CNC) for resin. If you could control the temperature better (adding smaller amounts) then maybe that could also work with CA. The advantage being that it does not matter about sticking to the mold, you always have the option of melting the wax off. I suppose another (much more fiddly option) would be ceramic, like a plaster slip. A sand mold would probably contain the baking powder, although the CA glue would obviously soak away and I guess glue sand to the outside of the "dice"
@@transientaardvark6231 sand would be easy to sand or buff off but then you'd need to deal with making the dice fair. It seems like the mold release helped which isn't a huge surprise. When fixing silicone with it it'll hold the silicone-silicone bond well but any on the surface can be carefully peeled off. Wax is a good idea if you can use the type with a higher melting point. The glue might harden in the correct place before the mold could get deformed.
If revisited in the future you should look into the chemical reaction and the actual ratio of the reaction. Then going by weight you could add the exact amounts needed per layer and ensure either excess glue or no excess to ensure complete reaction.

This channel is pure gold and I don't normally like craft channels lol. Their vibe just puts me in a good mood. Tbh makes me wanna do some crafting too haha.
Love the video as always guys. I work in a baking soda plant and thought I could throw out some info. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) does expire, heat and time cause it to decay into sodium carbonate. Most baking soda you can buy is a #2 coarseness. If you ever try again you could use #1, it is very thin almost like powdered sugar. There is also stuff with TCP in it so it flows without clumping.
The reaction with baking soda, and how quickly it hardens and becomes inert in water, is why (gel) superglue is used so much in aquascaping! If I'm working out of water and want it to set quickly, I can just sprinkle some baking soda on and then blow it off/rinse it off before putting it in the tank. It's safe for your plants, fish, snails, shrimp. ...just don't forget to rinse until the baking soda doesn't fizz anymore if you don't want to potentially alter your pH.... You can use it to attach pieces of wood to each other, or to stones to help weigh them down. You can even glue some plants to wood/rocks with it, namely epiphytes (they don't like their roots being covered, so a tiny dot of glue is great for perching them in cool-looking spots on branches and stones) and moss. Honestly, you can make so many useful things with a bit of superglue. You can make even *more* things if you have PETg and other foodsafe filaments for a 3D printer. I'd love to see you guys play with designing even more pet (fuzzy, feathery, scaley, wet...) friendly gadgets that could be printed out by everyone!
Here's a few ideas for dice!: 1. Use a shell mold and use this resin-adjacent material as the center the same way you might use concrete in a resin project to save on materials 2. Do a dice collab with Rybonator 3. Try to make the perfect mirror dice dice makers have dreamed of making and 4. Have a dice collab with Rybonator (Yes this is on here twice, because I really wanna see it)
I love and use Sensodine!!! It makes me happy to know they are sponsoring you guys, because I will order through the link every time I need to buy more and thus be able to help your channel even more!!! Yay!!! Great video by the way!! LOL!!!
You can also try lowering the concentration of baking soda. Mix in some inert filler, blend it really well, fill the mold and then just do a single pour of glue. With any luck it won't cure too fast, but still pretty fast. You can use how different fillers react, flour, sand, chalk, clothes dryer lint...
I sometimes use superglue and very thin layers of toilet roll to mend tiny skulls! Sometimes voles and shrews skulls will have little cracks or holes, and i fix them by dabbing some superglue on and then placing the tiniest fraction of paper! Glues and reacts super quick and turns super hard! Very useful
Best usage I have seen of this method is building up plastic parts. Dip in glue, dip in powder, dip in glue, dip in power, repeat. Then sand down to shape you want. I am using this method to fix some broken transformers from my 80s toys.
Baking soda and CA glue are used for mending broken guitar nuts (the white bit at the end of the neck where the strings go over) and its great for small things - this was educational as I never knew how far the glue would sink in, thank you so much!
I can't believe I'm about to say this but that is the best ad I've ever seen! Really excellent job guys! Also definitely trying the baking soda super glue on my project to see if it will hold. It's either that or I'm yeeting it out the window 🤣
I didn't realize that not a lot of people knew how hard baking soda and superglue got. I've always used it as a kind of "quick cement filler" for cracks in things that couldn't be held together by superglue alone. Like when some wall decorations fell and a whole corner broke off, I layered glue and baking powder till it filled the void spaces and then painted it the same color. Did the same thing with some of the display ceramic decorations, but used gold paint on top for a "fool's gold kintsugi" effect. I've even used this to fix a broken fingernail before! We were at a party and one of my cousin's acrylic nail tips cracked right off and we had to cement it back on so it wasn't obvious in the pictures. Actually, acrylic nails are made with acrylic powder and a hardening liquid too. I wonder how that compares to baking soda and superglue as a resin alternative...
You’re right it’s probably pretty similar, the acrylic liquid smells pretty strong like glue too… we literally use actual resin for gel nails and something like super glue to attach tips so you’re probably right
Video looks so cool! Cant wait to binge it while drawing :D I want to see how the baking soda and glue holds up to be honest, but in my opinion i think resin would last better in the longer run! Thanks for posing such a cool video
Love how no matter how hot it felt to the touch and how many times the lovely Katlyn shouts Evan No, stop don't touch it...He just lets that little boy curiosity rule and continues to touch 🤣🤣🤣 Love your videos, thanks for the science, fun, education and giggles...best YT channel out there in the RUclipsverse...😊
We use this technique (baking soda + super glue) in the miniature building hobby a lot! It's really good for basing material or filling in gaps you don't want. Surprised it behaved this well in a silicone mold. Awesome video. :)
Evan: "I'm gonna go for the extreme. You told me not to, but I'm gonna do it." Katelyn: "Oh jeez. Ok." If that doesn't perfectly sum on this channel's whole dynamic, I don't know what does 😂
If you liked those results, something easier to deal with, acrylic nail powder and liquid. It also forms a polymer. It comes in quite a lot of colors and works well with mica powder. It also won't stick to the mold, you still may want to release it though.
I actually bought some because of your comment! I tried making dice with resin before and it was just such a pain and hassle without the proper equipment like pressure chambers etc. So now I'm excited to at least try another option. Another friend if mine is also allergic to resin, so if this works, that'd be so cool!
The fact that after all that toiling you came out with a dice that look like sediments, I love it definitely gonna have to try this one out ( don’t worry I’m an adult 🤣)
I literally came back to this video just to watch the ad 🤣🤣🤣 my husband and I died laughing. Your literally the only channel that I look forward to seeing the ads 🤣🤣
I have no attachment to it working or not. I love the attempts... and what you learned along the way. How can you imagine you'll get it right every time? Never be afraid to fail.
Top tip for fellow bass players. A couple of years ago I resurfaced the finger board of a fretless bass with this, instead of epoxy resin, polished it with car bodywork polish and after a couple of years of gigging it is still as hard and smooth as glass with better sustain then even the original hard wood finger board.
Modern dictionaries include "dice" as an acceptable word for the singular. Enough people make the mistake that the majority of people understand that someone is referring to one object when saying "a dice", so dictionaries reflect that these days.
Your led dice video came into my recommends and now I'm obsessed with you guys!! The Raycon ad in that video was the funniest sponsored section I've ever seen haha!

loving this test 😂 i feel like you guys could definitely make some cool projects with geodes and natural stone/salt texture as the center piece! i feel like the cross section and even the little voids on the side of the rainbow cube look a lot like natural stones! it would be fun to be able to see it incorporated into perhaps a table top or tray with actual resin to seal it 😂
This has been used in guitar repair for a very long time. Used to fill the slots in the nut that have become too wide or were done sloppily, so that they can be recut.
I've said it before and I'll say it again - I will ALWAYS WATCH A EVAN AND KATELYN AD. Do I need toothpaste right now? No. Am I ever going to sign up for a Squarespace website? Probably not. AM I HAPPY TO SIT AND LEARN ABOUT THESE PRODUCTS FROM EVAN WHO IS DRESSED AS A TOOTH? YES. YES I AM.
Had to come back to this video to say thank you! I cracked my fingernail and got the idea to try patch the broken nail with nail glue and baking soda and then file off the excess. it’s holding up pretty well!
So I work with various adhesives in microelectronics applications. Many that I work with also use an "accelerator" - essentially a catalyst that speeds up the curing process. In this case, baking soda is the accelator. The thicker glue might work better if poured into your mold first and then accelerated with baking soda. You could even "dust" the mold with it to create an initially cured layer. Many different ways you could experiment with this. But I otherwise really like the video!
Very funny and told me exactly what I needed to know regarding colorants. CA is used in the aquarium hobby all the time to glue hardscape together. The only successful coloring technique I've seen is sprinkling sand over the CA. Thanks a mil👍
That pause after “Does it look nice?…No…” was just absolutely peak comedy, i cackled for a straight minute after that one. This was a blast to watch, y’all 😂
I use superglue and baking soda for making stuff for miniature figure bases. Like rock formations and such. They have a very interesting texture when it comes to painting them to. Gel to extra thin works for this stuff to.
E&K: have been doing resin projects for like millennia Also E&K: today we're doing a resin-like project with *literal superglue* Also also E&K: "what if we used... mold release?!?! 😲🤯🤓😱 waow what an ideaaaa" All jokes aside, love you guys!!! I put down my oldest pet this morning and this video was EXACTLY what I needed to have waiting for me when I came home 💔💕
For D&D and similar, all the other dice have digits, so the 6-sided one would be the odd one out if it had the standard dots instead. Their molds are for D&D dice, so it just worked out that way.
I love the Sensodyne add so much! I don’t know if non-Kevins would fully get it but I think it could stand alone as a Sensodyne commercial. They should definitely buy it from you and use it themselves! With you guys getting royalties and links back to your channel and all of the things of course. I have to admit during the test I totally gave up on baking soda dice but I am really proud of you guys for circling back and making that cube mold work! I love the way the stripes look! It cleaned up so much better than I thought it would. I’m interested to know if the numbers were just drawn on or carved in and painted. I have stone dice and I have a very specific tray in which I’ll roll them in because I am terrified that they’ll break. If they get bumped off the table their definitely gonna shatter. you guys made a beautiful stone alternative that can get hammered, literally!!! that’s amazing! Good job you guys, for real!
“Sometimes you try to save time and you waste time. We could just change the whole title of this video to that” - 2020 Evan. Some things don’t change 😂😂😂
This feels like one of those projects that any sane (non-youtuber) person would have abandoned almost immediately... The fact that you didn't is why I love you 😂
I literally used this for my bard character model. Could only find a barbarian halfling so I added a bump on the back of the axe and rounded the edges and it was absolutely perfect! That stuff is soooo cool
Baking soda and super glue have been used for years in the Model Horse hobby (and I assume other hobbies) for years. It can get pretty hot sometimes though lol
I didn't go through all the comments, but I didn't see anyone mention the fire that happened at the back of their first test with alcohol ink. it was very small, but you can see just a bit of flame.

Here's a few ideas for dice!:
1. Use a shell mold and use this resin-adjacent material as the center the same way you might use concrete in a resin project to save on materials
2. Do a dice collab with Rybonator
3. Try to make the perfect mirror dice dice makers have dreamed of making
and 4. Have a dice collab with Rybonator (Yes this is on here twice, because I really wanna see it)
Yes on the Rybonator. If nothing else, they need to check him out for dice molds. They paid $20 for that for basically no reason.
Your safety goggles give off a 70s vibe! The orange tint, big lenses, I love them
I love and use Sensodine!!!
It's either that or I'm yeeting it out the window 🤣
thank you! also yeeting the project is always an option if it all goes downhill
You’re right it’s probably pretty similar, the acrylic liquid smells pretty strong like glue too… we literally use actual resin for gel nails and something like super glue to attach tips so you’re probably right
Really hoping this is the start of an interesting dice series bc if so I’m already obsessed 😂
Might have to wait until they order a new dice mold. R.I.P. the dice mold.
@@maxpacker2372 I know 😭 The pain I felt when Evan destroyed the D20 mold 😭😂
2:00 "Do you have teeth? Or are you still a baby?" made me crack up!!!!!
Video looks so cool! Cant wait to binge it while drawing :D I want to see how the baking soda and glue holds up to be honest, but in my opinion i think resin would last better in the longer run! Thanks for posing such a cool video
I just discovered Evan and Katelyn and their chemistry and charisma is off the charts. Thoroughly enjoyable!!
You told me not to, but I'm gonna do it."
Katelyn: "Oh jeez. Ok."
If that doesn't perfectly sum on this channel's whole dynamic, I don't know what does 😂
🤣🤣
If you liked those results, something easier to deal with, acrylic nail powder and liquid. It also forms a polymer. It comes in quite a lot of colors and works well with mica powder. It also won't stick to the mold, you still may want to release it though.
I actually bought some because of your comment!
I tried making dice with resin before and it was just such a pain and hassle without the proper equipment like pressure chambers etc.
So now I'm excited to at least try another option.
Another friend if mine is also allergic to resin, so if this works, that'd be so cool!
you guys should test different biodegradable resins!
Thank you guys for filling the Jenna and Julien sized hole in my heart ❤️
I love how much genuine fun you have making these videos
So proud of you guys for *sticking* it through
The fact that after all that toiling you came out with a dice that look like sediments, I love it definitely gonna have to try this one out ( don’t worry I’m an adult 🤣)
I literally came back to this video just to watch the ad 🤣🤣🤣 my husband and I died laughing. Your literally the only channel that I look forward to seeing the ads 🤣🤣
The ad still gets me 🤣
Still my favorite ad😂
I’m shooketh that I leave these comments and completely forget then come to the comment section months later to write practically the same thing. 😂
If Evan do youtube alone, his channel will be empty because he forgot to hit the record button XD
I have no attachment to it working or not. I love the attempts... and what you learned along the way. How can you imagine you'll get it right every time? Never be afraid to fail.
Press F to pay respects to the complex mold 😔
Top tip for fellow bass players. A couple of years ago I resurfaced the finger board of a fretless bass with this, instead of epoxy resin, polished it with car bodywork polish and after a couple of years of gigging it is still as hard and smooth as glass with better sustain then even the original hard wood finger board.
Katelyn: uses the word "die" correctly
also Katelyn: immediately (in)corrects to the plural "dice"
SO CLOSE! "Die" is one, "dice" are more than one.
Why is it spelt "dice" instead "dies" like in every other plural form of the noun "die"?
@@ragnkja dies as in dying is a verb not a noun. I think dice and die rather than dices comes from the root of the word
@@Ryanrulesok
"The dies were stolen from the Royal Mint" is a (hopefully hypothetical) example to the contrary. "Die" is definitely the root word.
Modern dictionaries include "dice" as an acceptable word for the singular. Enough people make the mistake that the majority of people understand that someone is referring to one object when saying "a dice", so dictionaries reflect that these days.
Thankfully a Grammar nanny is in attendance. Did you happen to glean anything else from the video?
Fun fact, the military sometimes uses this technique to repair small chips in the helicopter blades
They don't use ramen? 🤔
@@serendipity1274 lol no
Thaaanks for showing the celsius temperature as well. Awesome video guys :)
Scale modelers and diorama makers have been using this trick for years. It's a cool experiment!. Nice one y'all.
Your led dice video came into my recommends and now I'm obsessed with you guys!! The Raycon ad in that video was the funniest sponsored section I've ever seen haha!
thank you!
I love that you put farenheit and celius thats so thoughtful of you! I always have to go google when they say farenheit because i have no clue what that means. Same with inches etc. We use meters and centimeters. Thank you so much it makes it so much easier to watch.♥️🥰
I haven’t seen the video yet, but I know even if it doesn’t work, it will never replace resin in our hearts! 😭. Like, what you you going to do, song “baking soda and super glue time”, that simply doesn’t work!
that's true, it doesn't **quite** have the same ring to it
@@EvanAndKatelyn I’m glad you have seen the light, lol
In all seriousness, I really appreciate your response. I think it’s so cool when creators make an effort to connect to their audience I hope y’all have a great day
"y'know what we should do bb?" "what?" "we should use mold release!" "oh :D"
Nail glue and baking soda are great for broken nails. I think it is flamenco 💃 guitarists uses it to harden their nails for playing.
So glad RUclips suggested this video to me. I am now a fan of you both. Both entertaining and informative. I feel like your videos are going to be my new binge watches.
loving this test 😂 i feel like you guys could definitely make some cool projects with geodes and natural stone/salt texture as the center piece! i feel like the cross section and even the little voids on the side of the rainbow cube look a lot like natural stones! it would be fun to be able to see it incorporated into perhaps a table top or tray with actual resin to seal it 😂
This has been used in guitar repair for a very long time. Used to fill the slots in the nut that have become too wide or were done sloppily, so that they can be recut.
I just discovered these two gems, and they are adorable!
Me too. I just subscribed.
I love how strong their relationship is. This video shows it so well.
YES. YES I AM.
haha thank you for enjoying the ads :)
Had to come back to this video to say thank you! I cracked my fingernail and got the idea to try patch the broken nail with nail glue and baking soda and then file off the excess. it’s holding up pretty well!
So cool! You guys need to make a superglue and baking soda countertop now :>>>>
So I work with various adhesives in microelectronics applications.
You guys are my only source of sanity while recovering for surgery. Please continue being awesome
Evan: guys stick with us! stick with us!
Me: like how the super glue stuck to your glove
I fixed my old and very well loved Muji scissors yesterday with CA and baking soda... It is so versatile, I love this mix!
I love how they keep doing odd experiments with dice haha
I never thought that the best sensodyne commercial Id ever watch would be inside an evan&katelyn video! Im so proud of you guys!
5:24 it's easier to homogenize dry additions to wet ingredients, not vice versa.
That pause after “Does it look nice?…No…” was just absolutely peak comedy, i cackled for a straight minute after that one. This was a blast to watch, y’all 😂
You guys are adorable and I LOVE the energy you put into this! Please: MORE! :D
I use superglue and baking soda for making stuff for miniature figure bases. Like rock formations and such. They have a very interesting texture when it comes to painting them to. Gel to extra thin works for this stuff to.
Katelyn: “Aww, I thought you were on fire.”
Evan: “Sorry to disappoint you.”
Lmao! 😆
Bro getting sponsored by Sensodyne is genuinely insane, I'm so happy for y'all
E&K: have been doing resin projects for like millennia
Also E&K: today we're doing a resin-like project with *literal superglue*
Also also E&K: "what if we used... mold release?!?! 😲🤯🤓😱 waow what an ideaaaa"
All jokes aside, love you guys!!! I put down my oldest pet this morning and this video was EXACTLY what I needed to have waiting for me when I came home 💔💕
So sorry :'(
1:14 HELP that shadow of evan casually holding an axe as he walks up to katelyn is so hilarious 😭
It could be only me, but I find it really strange to see actual numbers on this kind of dice instead of the dots

The fact that you didn't is why I love you 😂
Guys, didn't anyone noticed fire on 10:31 ? There is fire because of alcohol, right? Or was i just imagining it...
3:06 the way you guys just awkwardly smile at this clip. 💀 i love it.
This entire episode is one giant “that’s what she said” joke and it’s fabulous
I literally used this for my bard character model. Could only find a barbarian halfling so I added a bump on the back of the axe and rounded the edges and it was absolutely perfect!
That stuff is soooo cool
Only you two could make me buy toothpaste lol I love your ads
You are the example of resilience, still amazed that you didn't gave up!
Baking soda and super glue have been used for years in the Model Horse hobby (and I assume other hobbies) for years. It can get pretty hot sometimes though lol
Model airplane builders spray a mixture of baking soda dissolved in water onto a superglued joints to instantly cure it.
I love it how you start off making a square salt rock, and in the end realize that you have made a square salt rock.
That cut for the commercial break was amazing. Weird that you are talking about this toothpaste because I was just thinking about buying some
I didn't go through all the comments, but I didn't see anyone mention the fire that happened at the back of their first test with alcohol ink. it was very small, but you can see just a bit of flame.
