im a mopar guy but thats one badass mercury . those 427 cammers were awesome engines and certainly gave the hemis a run for their money . the ford cammer engine worried chrysler so much that they began developing a sohc hemi to compete with it in nascar but nascar banned these exotic engines . i read the 427 cammer engine cost ford about 14,000 a piece to build in 1960s dollars and were never put in a production car but they were offered to the ford factory drag racing teams to run in the a/fx class. try finding one of these engines today very rare motor

As a loaner car from Mark Motors Ford we had a 64 Merc
with the roll down rear window & 410" interceptor. Damn!
At the same time (early 70's), a guy I didn't know had a 67 Cyclone Caliente with a 427 medium rise, 4 speed & slicks so big they almost didn't fit!
    Same teardrop hood!
Near Aero Drive In on Broadway in El Cajon. Great times!
After I thought about it, my cuz had a "Ford Comet" Wagon as they were originally introduced before handoff to Mercury. 1960?

To this day, it was one of my all time favorite cars. Got traded in on a Volvo. Got too many tickets with it for "un-safe start" (local ordnance) hammering the 4-speed off the line. It was a runner, and with the leather interior and turquoise dash lighting, a hit with my girlfriends. Went back and forth to LA many times just cruisin along happy as could be. But it'd run, if asked ... :D

383 was one of the best motors ever built. Just as happy as a 283 winding, and with a whole lotta TQ. Lotta runners got 383 swaps. Cousin had a 57 Ford Fairlane 2-door (apple green & cream - what ever happened to 2-tones ...) with a 383 TQ-Flite. Never would open the hood when challenged on the street. He'd say you know it's a V8 ... Won quite a few street duels :D

He did occasionally catch some flak, early on... That's why he stopped opening the hood :D
The swap was not that hard, and it would run down any stock 390 Ford and a bunch of 396's :D
We were always trying to get the Holman & Moody marine FE heads, but they were scarce and big $$. The 383 would run that hard and cost the same as a pair of good FE heads for a whole engine, converter and 727 tranny.
Can't go back to those days, can only think Ethanol on the street at 13:1 (yeah greenies) and built motors. But any decent Tesla Performance model would eat their lunches now - new day ...

Back in the day wasnt somebody working on a gear drive to replace the long timing chain? I think that is when it was being used in Top Fuel. I understand about the theory that gear drives transfer harmonics up into the valve train, however Fords DOHC indy engines were gear drive and they lived very successfully at 9-10000 rpm. Also with the many gears that would be needed just a short link between 2 of the gears with a short chain would solved the harmonics problem. Perhaps if nascar wouldnt have outlawed the engine Ford would have put the resources into such further development.

As a life long Chevy fan I can admit that the SOHC427 was one cool engine; then and now. I have a friend who had one (Thunderbolt); he was constantly keeping track of the "sixteen miles of chain" driving the two cams. Helluva machine. Thanks to both of you for showing us your work.

Big cars and small for back in the day, cars are cool no matter what brand. Always loved Merc's also. Caliente is my flavor. My friend across the street's mother drove a light yellow auto vert with a tear dropped 289. Have a big block 65 "b" body IMP ,,,my S.S., to a Firebird formula 400 t-400 and a wounded for the moment Malibu S.S. 4 speed . Stir sticks may not win the races these days but the smile factor is seen on these men's faces is what i enjoyed also as much as when i am in my deluxe white 4 speed buccaneer red 77 T/A. smoking bandit this coming summer. Hope soon to start on my new toy, an aluminum headed 6 b.b.l. injection 440 stick in a 69 Cuda. Thinking pistol with maybe a 5 shooter instead of a already have 4. Save them because once they are gone , they become only pictures and memories. Nice to have the cash for real deals or fake ones. They all bring on that smile equally. Now if only i could claim of having "hair in the wind" i would have it all, or till i find another beat down project i know i can bring back to the streets of fire and smiling faces.

Thank you for introducing me to my new dream car that mercury comet cyclone that is one I wouldn't only give my left testy for but I might go my whole sack for that cammer, it is beautiful.. wow ! what a well done car the owner sure has shown how to do cars the right way.. that Marauder is pretty damn sexy as well.. it reminds me of a 1965 convertible Ford Galaxy 500 XL my great uncle gave me back when I was a dumb kid.. it had a fast running 390, 4 speed he bought it new and had driven it back and forth from coast to coast a few times, after I got it and I had to try to make it what I thought was better the paint I didn't like, I was a dumb kid with no taste. ford I believe called the color honey gold , so my dumb ass put a cheap $200 black paint job over it and mag wheels on it and air shocks on it and street raced it until I blew it up.. what a waste makes me want to cry when I think about it especially when I see nice old Ford's and Mercury's done nowadays..
