VESC Tool Setup & Programming Guide 2024: Black Mamba ESC Settings (Phase One Pt. 4)

  • In this video, we set up the VESC Based ESC (MakerX D75) on the Black Mamba Esk8 build. This board has a pretty interesting setup, using (limited) full current reverse, some higher power settings, and a PPM remote. Stay tuned for the first ride video coming soon! This video is heavily chaptered for good reference points so you can best learn how to program your VESC-based ESC. The steps I take in this video are pretty universal, but if you are unsure of something please ask questions, because you can easily brick your ESC if you do something wrong.
    The Black Mamba build is a 14s6p VESC-powered electric skateboard, using a MakerX D75, Flipsky 6374 motors, Onsra TKP trucks, Newbee Impaler rims, SKP tires, a Hummie deck, and a Zmote from Kamen on Tindie.
    Installing the electronics in this build was not too difficult, but it was time-consuming as I ran into a couple issues I didn't document on video. I accidentally fried a switch somehow when I was soldering up the wires for the light control, and that took quite some time to figure out. After getting the switch wired up, it's pretty awesome to have the remote controlling the lights, just like on my old Hummie build!

    Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to make this video.
    The music in the background makes it about 100 times more difficult to listen.

    This is actually very timely. I had the mboards endurance for a week now. Thr vesc app connected on day 1 and now it doesnt anymore. Mboards says yhe makerx bluetooth module is faulty. The error says unable to read firmware version.

      You'll likely need to use the USB cable, flash bootloader per/side and then also flash firmware per/side.

      Depending on the voltage, you'll want to be careful to make sure you don't exceed your ESC's rated voltage. However, the setting you're looking for is going to be a combination of "Battery Regen" and "Motor Negative"
      You can play with those settings until you find the configuration you like, but make sure not to exceed your battery's max discharge and charge and discharge amps.

    So annoyed, it's not working on my laptop.. Spent a day trying to ensure the opengl is available, inline with the requirements and it's still not working :( Tempted to do it by the app, but my Vesc esc doesn't have bluetooth. Do you know or does anyone know if I can use my android vesc app and connect USB-c to Micro USB into the ESC? will it work?

      Dang that sucks! I know VESC can be super finnicky. Are you on Mac or something? I haven't really had any issues with using it on PC, not like that anyway. You cannot use a usb to your phone, unfortunately, it's been asked before.

      @@RBEMotion Yeah, just tried it yesterday with someone else's computer and his computer is older than mine?.. Not sure why it's not allowing it to load up? Says I'm missing.dll files and not able to find OpenGL or higher and I've got OpenGL 3.1. Think we've managed to put some new settings onto the esc.. need to go out and ride, see what happens?

    What bms would you recommend for 18s minimum?

    • @RBEMotion
      @RBEMotion  5 месяцев назад

      Usually I'd default to JBD or LLT BMS nowadays if you want a smart bms. If you don't need the bluetooth features, the ones from Daly work well too but may be larger in size.

    • @JamesWaltner
      @JamesWaltner 5 месяцев назад

      can you maybe give me a super specific model for me to search for. I really respect your opinion. 12 - 18 maybe even 20s with Bluetooth and app for monitoring cells.
      I went to the jbd website and just wanted to make sure I was getting the right one. I have built plenty of vesc boards but this will be my first battery build and I have everything except the bms and the Samsung 50s batteries

      @@JamesWaltnerWell, I personally use the little square 14s bluetooth one, and the 10-17s one. Let me know if that's useful. They're mostly the same. I usually pick the smallest discharge one since I don't run them discharge.
