    Thank you so much! I'm currently doing a lot of research on live-streaming for my institution and I've been looking at both Sling Studio and Blackmagic as options and this is really helpful. Your explanation and clarity is much appreciated and this is by far the best video I've seen on the topic from my research.

    Nice summary of SlingStudio - very fair from an actual user point of view. Since the pandemic was starting last March, I have been using SlingStudio in my church with 3 camera links (Panasonic GH5, Canon XF300, Canon C100mkII, cameras which I had already), mixed in with a feed from a pc for slides (Proclaim software) and audio from our sanctuary mixer board. Being in Los Angeles, we have VERY tight restrictions on how many people can be in the sanctuary (currently 10) - With the SlingStudio setup, I, the pastor, am able to direct the entire stream from an iPad that I have with me as I'm running the service. I have a 2nd iPad that runs our Proclaim projection software with visual elements for the service and sermon. One gets good at changing cameras and visuals and creating the PIP windows. Sling has made it possible to do a 3-camera service, with slides and videos popped in (prerecorded choirs and soloists), with PIP and multi-input screens, and run it all myself. I'm not sure how I could have pulled it all off without Sling with pandemic restrictions on staff.
    The limitations you mentioned are all real - I have had the unexplained mini-HDMI cable failures a few times - I now have a nice collection of spares. Battery life on the Camera Links is less than 2 hours, so if I need longer times, I use an external battery pack. I have had drama with the audio cables and thought it was the 1/8" connector on the hub, but trying a different cable took care of the issue. I wouldn't even try to stream without the CAT-5 attachment.
    My cameras are mostly unmanned and pre-set for zoom and framing. I am about to integrate one of our Panasonic PTZ cameras into the setup, equipped with their software that follows the subject. I'll put a Camera Link on the feed of that camera and integrate it into the SlingStudio workflow. Hoping the lag won't be out of sync with the other cameras.
    AFTER the pandemic restrictions are lifted, we plan to continue to stream as we have a MUCH larger audience now than we had before. We'll see how it goes as far as retaining an audience. I have a Roland VR50-HDmkII that I had planned to use as a switcher for streaming and recording with PTZ cameras I was planning to put in (did this summer) - I wish it had the ability natively to store macros for PIP. I might have to sort out using the Elgato Stream Deck to do that on the Roland. According to Roland, it might work to do that.
    Thanks for your videos - as I was learning SS, your video on it was very helpful - I've been live-streaming every Sunday morning and every Friday during the school year (chapels) - not sure how I could have pulled this off without Sling on my own. Sling gets a lot of grief for support (no new videos on their channel for over a year, limited firmware and software changes) and lack of supply. I've found it a solid product for what it tries to do.

    • @chadpjackson
      @chadpjackson  3 года назад +1

      Great comment Lawrence. Kudos to you for running it all yourself AND preaching on top of that. You've got a perfect use case for Sling for sure. I've never heard of anyone getting anything like macros functioning with Sling so don't get your hopes up. The addition of the subject tracking PTZ is a great idea, especially if you don't like to be glued behind the podium. =+)

      @@chadpjackson thanks - It sure is an exercise in mental and physical dexterity... On macros, I wasn’t meaning with the SlingStudio. I meant with the Roland VR50 HDmkII switcher, to give me some of the ease of use that the Sling has natively. To be able to do PiP on the fly with any inputs is great. The Roland is much more clunky. This week I’m experimenting with using the HDMI output of the PTZ cameras (they have both SDI and HDMI) with the SlingStudio interface. I also attach some Sony NP970 clone batteries that I have directly to the Camera links. The batteries have USB outputs right on them, and came with USB to USB-mini cables that will power the links for several hours. I never liked the internal batteries... just good for 2 hours or so.

    • @chadpjackson
      @chadpjackson  3 года назад +1

      @@LDBecker Ah. That makes sense. When I used PiP on the Sling I found that the small frame would creep up a few pixels every time I used it and dragging sources to the boxes every time was annoying. With the BM I can set up several PiP arrangements and sources and save them as macros in advance. One button brings up exactly what I want on preview. Hopefully you can do the same with the VR50. Definitely reduces stress while directing.

    • @LDBecker
      @LDBecker 3 года назад

      @@chadpjackson The current SlingStudio app allows you to save PiP and multi-camera setups, so you just do it once per session - I usually have 3-4 of them per church service. I haven't noticed any changes in sizes when I recall them. Apparently you can set up a stream as a template to just reuse - haven't sorted that out yet. It takes me about a minute to set up the 3-4 presets. Where I put the PiP window changes each week anyway (depending on how many singers I have).

    • @chadpjackson

      @@LDBecker Maybe I had a glitch or maybe they fixed it. I'd put my pip along the edge and it would slowly creep up every time I used it. I'm glad it's working for you. I actually just dropped my Sling setup in the mail. Sold on eBay this morning. I'm sad to see it go but there's a huge demand for them right now and we just never use it anymore.

    Your detailed explanations and personal experience is VERY much appreciated. It's hard to find quality training like this even on RUclips. I'm currently working on figuring out what my setup will be and wonder how I would be able to work with on screen live graphics such as titles, lower thirds, title screens, screen share, pre recorded video, etc by using the Atem mini Pro and the LiveU Solo for better bandwidth. I just bought the LiveU Solo and am considering the Atem switcher but can't see how to be able to use on screen graphics since I'm not seeing a way to use OBS studio with the LiveU Solo since I don't see an RTMP stream key option that LiveU can send to OBS. What are you using for on screen graphic control and have you incorporated the LiveU Solo into your workflow at all? Any suggestions about on screen grahpics when using the Atem into the LiveU Solo?

    • @chadpjackson
      @chadpjackson  3 года назад

      You're very welcome Silver Crane. I'm glad it was helpful!
      We have a LiveUSolo in our newsroom but we don't go mobile with it. I know it's a very popular solution for mobile streaming. Almost all our streams are on campus where we are always close to high speed ethernet ports. We stream through our AJA HELO via ethernet and it's 100% reliable. The LiveUSolo gives you the cellular bonding feature that makes your stream more reliable and "wider" when you don't have the reliable land line.
      I'm not sure exactly how you're trying to combine the ATEM Mini Pro, LiveU Solo, and OBS. Typically you wouldn't use all of those together. All three have the ability to stream via RTMP. I believe OBS can add graphics but it would be after you've mixed video on the ATEM which isn't ideal. I don't think the LiveU can add graphics. The best option for adding graphics is with one of your Downstream Keys. You can load graphics into the ATEM but it's a bit clunky to change them unless you set up macros to do that job. To play video you need a BM Hyperdeck. OR you can bring graphics and video in via a video source. Something like propresenter is a great option. You connect a laptop as a source with all your graphics and video and use that as your downstream key source and all your laptop graphics will sit on top of your program video feed.
      Honestly, this is an area we're still experimenting with and I want to learn more ways of doing it but hopefully this gives you an idea of what it might look like.

    • @chadpjackson
      @chadpjackson  3 года назад +1

      @@silvercranestudios6259 Depends on how many graphics you need. If it's under 10, I'd just use the built in graphics support of the ATEM. If you need a lot or you need to make changes on the fly then I'd like at something like propresenter. So far the built in media bank the ATEM software has been enough for us.

      Both ATEM Studio and Studio Pro have a DVE function that allows you to very accurately place any video source on top of another. It can bee used for picture in picture or split screen. One you have it the way you like it just save a macro and you'll never have to recreate it again.

    • @chadpjackson
      @chadpjackson  3 года назад

      With Sling it depended on how much interferences ran into. They are supposed to reach 300’ but we found it was more like 200’. With a big crowd of mobile devices crowding the wireless band it could quickly drop to 50’ or less.
      For our Blackmagic set up we’re only limited by our cable length. We use our 100’ SDI cables a lot as well as our 250’ spools. When we have to go really far we use our 1000’ fiber cables. The fiber has a booster so we can technically put a 250’ SDI cable on both ends of the fiber and get 1500’ total.

      @@Goombaybutch Unfortunately a wired connection is still the most reliable. Wireless systems tend to be less reliable due to bandwidth and interference issues. There are more expensive wireless transmission systems that claim to be more reliable. We're considering the Teradek Ace 500 for situations where a cable isn't realistic. My videographers tell me Teradek is the way to go. There are good reviews of the Hollyland Mars system. It's half the cost of Teradek but the brand isn't as well established.
