On one hand, I understand being tired of doing cliche tattoos. However, things like roses and clocks are popular for a reason; they hold cultural significance, they're stunning to look at when an artist can pull it off, and they symbolize very broad, common themes (beauty and time/timelessness). Again, while i get the artists' frustration and desire to do more original work, I also don't think it's fair to say that no one from this point on can get those tattoos. Thoughts?

Creative jobs require variety. Doing the same thing over and over will wreck an artist’s passion and inspiration, which ultimately can ruin a career, either by them eventually leaving the industry or by letting their standards slip and losing customers
I dont get the pocketclock tattoos, cmon dude be creative. There are more things that symbolize timelesness. But i get the rose tattoo thing, they just look good, who hates roses?
I think a big thing about the 'generic' tattoos of today (roses, lion head, compass/clock) is that people genuinely like those things. People aren't out here getting a rose tattoo because they think it will impress other people, they just like roses. These things are just cool things that people like, both symbolically and aesthetically, so they get it tattooed on themselves because they like these things and it makes them happy to carry it around with them. Everybody knows it's hardly unique, but they don't really care. Lions are cool, why should other peoples tattoo effect my tattoo?
I think at the end of the day these guys are artists and they're just fed up with drawing the same thing over and over again, It's creatively depressing. Still, they're getting paid to do it so they might as well just ignore it. They just want to rant and I'm here for it
the thing about roses is true. I work for a florist, everyone always goes for roses. I do find them very boring because of that, especially red ones. I try to talk people into other colors when I can, at least that gives it some variety. (also, they come in a lot of pretty colors.)
When I got my last tattoo I chose a shop I researched and liked, looked at all the portfolios and they were all good in different ways, so I asked all the artists which one would be interested in doing it. Because I have a feeling that if the artist is actually excited about an idea, they'll do a better job.
I did the same with mine. I ended up getting an artist that I would have not originally picked, but damn Caesar killed it! His style really made a cool idea turn into an amazing tattoo.
Basically: We hate every tattoo we have tattoed more than once, we hate it if it's too complicated, but also if it's too simple. We hate trends, by the way, so everything should be original and meaninful, but if you explain me what it means, I'm gonna hate how pretentious you are. Hurtado is doing good.
Literally, I was thinking the same. I mean I agree with them but they're not on their bodies so why do they care what others want and if they look like dicks.
Also, what I learned from other videos: we hate when people ask about the price of the tattoo beforehand. Yeah, how pathetic that someone might want to consider if they can afford it, ugh!
Not gonna lie, Nikko Hurtado was the only dude on here who didn't seem like he was on a high horse. A lot of famous tattoo artists seem to ride on their own ego, it's nice to see a dude with a pure love for the art and people. Like that one guy (too lazy to go back and check his name) "I don't like people" Thennnnnn maybe pick a career that doesn't involve being around them for extended periods of time, jackass. I understand and agree with the ones that are concerned about it not looking good (the straight line, the world map, microtattoos), but at the end of the day, if they want it, it's up to them, not your fuckin' ego.
Sara Fabel, to her credit, was not hating on a style as much as expressing a genuine concern with micro tattoos. I'd want my artist to lmk before I get work done if it's gonna heal looking like a rash!
I think the guy talking about graphic porn tattoos had a point too 😭 As well as the girl saying she didn't like people tracing her tattoos. The graphic porn ones are kind've misogynistic and really uncomfortable for a lot of women to see. Though to their credit, a decent amount of the artists in this vid just said "I'm not a fan of this, but I get why people get them."
That last guy dropping truth and exposing the other artists. Imagine athletes never wanting to run again cause they do it everyday, chefs not cooking a meal cause they've done it already....You picked this career so why judge?
Gerrit Fourie thank you! i am a hair and makeup artist and there have been so many trends to come and go, and i’ve done the same thing on so many people, and have never thought “ugh i wish i could do whatever i want on THEIR face for THEIR event” like if that’s what you want to do, then draw a picture on a piece of paper? tf
Even if you’re in your chosen profession, you’re still allowed to be annoyed by having to do something you find repetitive or boring. There’s nothing wrong with those feelings.
While I was getting a tattoo a few years ago I saw at another artists' station a sketch he had done of a pair of realistic eyes, one with a bat wing and one with a feathered wing. He said he wanted to do some bright colors for it so he was waiting for someone with pale enough skin so that it would stand out. I liked the sketch and I'm pale af so I volunteered my back and he gave me a good deal on it (since it wasn't exactly a design I had decided on myself). I think they probably have a lot of original drawings they would love to tattoo on the right person who comes along.
0:38 I didn't even notice the baby. I was looking at how huge he was with his awesomely crazy tattoos until the baby moved ,I thought he was part of the shirt
for being Switzerland? Look.. good on him for staying out of a critique but that was the point of asking someone a question. Maybe just not have him on.
Everyone has different styles. I personally love geometry. There are tattoo artists out there where that is their thing, others may hate it with a passion. Apart of getting the tattoo is finding the right artist for it.
I know a former incarcerated dude with a whole bunch tattoos over his whole torso. But on one side of his ribcage you can see jack sparrow sucking off Betty Boop and the other side you see jack sparrow fucking Betty Boop
Ok everyone shitting on the artists for not liking certain styles but like,, some of it is helpful! Like they’re giving insight about what won’t age well (too tiny) or allow you to get another tattoo (one line). :)
@@dappledfeather In my understanding, it's like if you drew a big black line across a blank piece of paper. It makes it impossible to draw a big picture on the paper, because the space is already used/divided. For example if the line goes from your neck straight down your back, you can't have a bigger picture on your back anymore.
Can I just say that I love the new opening format that they have been using for these videos. Also I appreciate the added effects that only make the tattooists stories and reactions more entertaining 😂
I really liked what Owen Paulls had to say about artist experimentation, and how that experimentation can inadvertently start trends that might not age the best.
The best ones were the guy saying he didn't like graphic porn tattoos, the girl saying she didn't like people tracing her tattoos, and the positive guy at the end.
Not true. I have three pieces that were concept pieces that no one else has. If you allow your tattoo artist to have full reign and creative ability you'll get once in a lifetime pieces that are extremely memorable.

I appreciate Nikko Hurtado’s answer. Obviously these artists are entitled to their opinions, but they don’t need to shit on the people who keep them in business 🤷♀️
It feels like 99% of tattoo artists get snobbish and act like divas once they can afford to have like a month ahead booked consistently... Doesn't matter how much of a dick they are, people are still gonna come for their designs, so they tend to abuse it.
Well they also deal with shitty people on the regular who can show little appreciation for their work and treat them less than as artists so after years of that who wouldn’t be a little frustrated?? These are hard working ppl they’re very much entitled to their opinion.
They’re just answering the question truthfully. And also, they’re artists, they don’t want to do they same thing over and over again. Other people are paying, so they can either accept or refuse.
That’s exactly it, everyone is creaming over the last dudes answer it’s a cool outlook he has but I also appreciate someone who stands by their artistic principle. They dont want to do small simple tattoos and I cant blame anyone for wanting to just get a simple small flower for their first tattoo and stuff i really appreciated that last guy
Don't worry! tattooers absolutely want you to bring reference pics, but what they don't want is pics of other existing tattoos with the expectation to copy it. Bring photos of the thing to be rendered, whether it's a style of lantern or a pose of a bird flying. Whatever it is you want. But their main frustration is when people treat them like photocopiers and want them to steal an existing (often also stolen) work from Pinterest and not give them any freedom for their own style. Hope that makes sense! (Good luck with your first tattoo, whatever it is you decide to get!)
@@benuwuowo go for it, I have three tattoos now (one of them a rose) and I was nervous at first because of all the videos saying you shouldn’t get this and that. Yeah some things like the infinity symbol are cliche, but really and truly most tattoo shops wont care as long as your not asking to copy a massive piece that would take hours. Plus things like roses are popular for a reason, because they look good, so don’t let these videos discourage you from getting tattoos you really want!
Doing repetitive work and work one generally wouldn't care for is just apart of the business. Every career has their downsides. Doing simple, small tattoos is how a lot of people get started. I don't know of any local tattoo artists around me that I have either met or my friend has gone to that has complained about what we are getting, even if it is simple. My first tattoo was pretty cliché and my tattoo artist was super cool about it (cat outline and semicolon). He was fun to talk to.
I love drawing and painting and making “traditional” art, but I think it’s unfair to say that people who spend hours combining images in photoshop to create a new one aren’t also making art. It’s just a different from from what he is used to, but they are being creative and it is art.
I waited till I was 41 to get a 1/2 sleeve. I saw a beautiful painting that sparked what I wanted. I sat with my tattoo artist and explained what drew me too it and my two other reference pieces and said now make it yours. He did, it’s beautiful and amazing, and I am asked about it all the time. He has done 3 of my tattoos, one is an infinity symbol with my son’s name threaded through it. He didn’t complain, he made it his own. That is why I pay the amount he ask. He is worth every penny and he never belittles me or what I want. I have my new idea for my next full sleeve ready to go when quarantine is over.

When I go in, I’ll usually give the artist a reference: “this is kinda what I was thinking of in general but like, play around with it. You’re the pro, work your magic” Giving artists some artistic freedom will (IMO) make the artist more excited to do the tat and will come up with some of the MOST AMAZING WORK
The most amazing tattoo work I’ve ever had done was like this for me. It’s a timeless design but the color change added some modern flair and it kind of had its own look:) there are lots of ways to make it unique to you
When I get tattoos, most of them are going to be because they're pretty. Most of the symbolic things in my life are physical things like rings that's I can wear. Like man I just want pretty lines and nicely done hands and music notes. Not everything gotta have a meaning.
I always wanted a sleeve to cover up my self harm scars. It's supposed to be made up of things that stopped me from ending it, like books, games and shows I loved. But now I feel like that will be silly lol. I don't want a silly tatoo

SadieCat I was so lost 😂. Like but don’t they sink lmao. I have a tiny one, but it’s to remind me to say grounded
Pauciloquent Flibbertigibbet ouch😂
I think at the end of the day these guys are artists and they're just fed up with drawing the same thing over and over again, It's creatively depressing. Still, they're getting paid to do it so they might as well just ignore it. They just want to rant and I'm here for it
@@coldfeetcomical9737 yes but in this transaction they are commissioned artists.
the thing about roses is true. I work for a florist, everyone always goes for roses.
I do find them very boring because of that, especially red ones. I try to talk people into other colors when I can, at least that gives it some variety. (also, they come in a lot of pretty colors.)
At the end of the day, the tattoo only matters to you. If you like it, that's all that matters.

Right? Wholesome as heck
69 photoshopped to be clean faced makes me realize how giant his fivehead is.

“I don’t hate styles I hate people” I’ve never related to anything, as much as I do to this.
When I got my last tattoo I chose a shop I researched and liked, looked at all the portfolios and they were all good in different ways, so I asked all the artists which one would be interested in doing it. Because I have a feeling that if the artist is actually excited about an idea, they'll do a better job.
And actually charge less, at least in my country.
@Phillip Martin up shut mouth your
@@PetraKujundzic I don't know if they charge less, but at least they won't charge more for doing something they hate
Phillip Martin ?????
Most accurate comment.

Nikko is an absolute legend
Sara Fabel, to her credit, was not hating on a style as much as expressing a genuine concern with micro tattoos. I'd want my artist to lmk before I get work done if it's gonna heal looking like a rash!
Doctor Dimension I know someone raised him well
I think the guy talking about graphic porn tattoos had a point too 😭 As well as the girl saying she didn't like people tracing her tattoos. The graphic porn ones are kind've misogynistic and really uncomfortable for a lot of women to see. Though to their credit, a decent amount of the artists in this vid just said "I'm not a fan of this, but I get why people get them."
Yeah but like ppl are annoying. Genuinely. And damn NYC ppl too. A whole different beast.
“I wanna lion 🦁 to represent power” lol soooo corny. I feel you on that bro!!!!
@@juliangreen9930 Also true, but don't be a dick about it. Its peoples choice what they want on their OWN bodies.
Gerrit Fourie As long as they’re not voicing these opinions to people’s faces when they come to get their tattoos, I don’t see a problem.
They aren't really judging just voicing what they don't like to do. It's ok to not like every part of your job
I’m wondering what’s one tattoo they wish they could tattoo but haven’t yet (if this makes any sense)

I can't lie I love little lines and dots and geometry. I draw them on my hands and limbs and I just think it's neat.
Everyone has different styles. I personally love geometry. There are tattoo artists out there where that is their thing, others may hate it with a passion. Apart of getting the tattoo is finding the right artist for it.
I must be late... I’ve never heard of “extreme porn” tattoos lol

Ok everyone shitting on the artists for not liking certain styles but like,, some of it is helpful! Like they’re giving insight about what won’t age well (too tiny) or allow you to get another tattoo (one line). :)
is there a reason the one-line tattoo would stop someone from getting another? I couldn't figure it out :O

Every tattoo has been done before. The true thing that matters is that the person who wears it loves it.
Not true. I have three pieces that were concept pieces that no one else has. If you allow your tattoo artist to have full reign and creative ability you'll get once in a lifetime pieces that are extremely memorable.

That's like asking how TF people could possibly get sick of listening to Enter Sandman.
You're not very smart are you?
I appreciate Nikko Hurtado’s answer. Obviously these artists are entitled to their opinions, but they don’t need to shit on the people who keep them in business 🤷♀️
It feels like 99% of tattoo artists get snobbish and act like divas once they can afford to have like a month ahead booked consistently... Doesn't matter how much of a dick they are, people are still gonna come for their designs, so they tend to abuse it.
Dima Medved, well said.
That’s the cool thing as a client is you have all of these awesome people to choose from based on what they specialize in. If you want that imagery that’s cool and it’s not something to hate on really but I think artists are definitely entitled to not want to do it either @@ioncekilledamanwithmyshoe
These videos are starting to make me anxious about getting my first tattoo because how do you even tell them what you want? You cant show them a picture?
(Good luck with your first tattoo, whatever it is you decide to get!)
yeeaaaaahhhh i kinda dont want to get tattoos anymore lol, and i was planing on getting a bunch of them lol
I sat with my tattoo artist
and explained what drew me too it and my two other reference pieces and said now make it yours.
The sex tattoos I would like to go. The shock value porn tattoos need to go (I’m so happy to see artists say that). The infinity signs need to go.
nickj12 I quite like the infinity signs. They are often used in memorial as well as cheesy love/friend tats. I think that’s a good use of infinity.

Giving artists some artistic freedom will (IMO) make the artist more excited to do the tat and will come up with some of the MOST AMAZING WORK
The most amazing tattoo work I’ve ever had done was like this for me. I gave him a reference photo, kinda what I was wanting from the tattoo in general (like the feel of it), and then told him to run with it. I love it so much that I’m going to extend the tattoo all the way around my thigh. I’m so ready for it
It sucks because my whole life I've been in love with red roses. Like I'm obsessed. I want them tattooed on me but it annoys me how overdone they are.

Just get whatever you’re comfortable with and what you like, who cares about them being overdone as long as you like it it’s cool
Zoe's Zoo I got a rose in a traditional sailor jerry style but I chose non traditional colors like a black stem/leaves and dark red rose instead of green/red.
