53A - Like Hitchcock's "Curtain", answer: TORN. This refers to the film "Torn Curtain", a 1966 political thriller by Hitchcock about defecting behind the Iron Curtain.
I think Alt-Esc for switching windows may have only been added in Windows 7. I also never knew it existed, but like many Microsoft features it seems to have been added just because they can and not for any useful reason. I don't know why anyone would ever want to cycle sequentially through windows instead of getting an Alt-Tab menu that lets them quickly navigate to the window they want.
This one really made me think. I caught on to the theme fairly quickly. Geography questions always give me pause. Not my strength, for sure. Really liked this one.
alt-esc was a new one to me (and i am a software engineer)! no need to apologize when you are struggling with a clue, watching your process is enjoyable and instructive.
Not sure what the words spelling across signify. Does anyone know? Like stop signs, reverence, relevance, deposition, no regrets, animations, revolting and milestone?
When solving the last themed clue, you said you didn't recognize the name, but you miss read it (as Bergnore). It's actually Tom Bergeron (best known for hosting America's Funniest Home Videos).
Thanks for explaining the Oreo clue--that totally went over my head...

One of the cooler themes recently

Agreed!
I think the clue may be in error. At least on my windows machines alt-est brings up the windows start menu same as the windows key.
@@SirWussiePants interesting. Alt-esc is documented by Microsoft at least as far back as Windows 7. Ctrl-esc brings up the start menu, however!
Alt+Esc had me so frustrated, I was stuck with tab for ages this morning
Me too. I think the clue is bad (incorrect) as that doesnt switch windows. Alt Tab is the correct answer to the clue given

I don't think they signify anything, just words made from the two parts of the theme.
"How on earth would you figure this out?"
Figures it out in 3 minutes.
Jk amazing solve as always

Just FYI Chris, "viva" (the thesis defence) rhymes with "fiver"👍
Out of curiosity, do crosswords ever attempt native advertising in their crossword clues?
I hope not but it seems like something that could happen.
Unusual grid size 19x23 … not particularly meaningful, just unusual
