As a Faust main, deflect shield is the biggest buff we got in this patch because we can land on a banana peel with deflect shield while we're losing and instantly crash the game
i feel like axl benefits from it. its always hard dealing with a rushdown character always in your face. with the deflect option at least he has a chance to do something.
I dont think i have used Deflect shield once so far and gone "Yeah that was the right play". Great quality on the vid tho holy cow i was not ready for how good it was gonna feel watching this
Yeah if you time it right they go into the other side of the fucking horizon its hilarious. Its pretty damn useful as axl, once i found out ive been trying to pull that block off with a command grab right after since no block frames
i think that it's competing with both blue burst (a better defensive option), gold burst (a game warping tool that pretty much wins you the round if it connects), and wild assault (nuff said), and it just can't keep up. command movement stuffing it completely is a huge issue, and the only times you'd be able to use it there are better tools instead.
@elfascisto6549 this is irrelevant now that they buffed ds, but to answer your question command movement is anything done on an attack or move that moves you, like forward advancing or ground-to-aerial attacks
@elfascisto6549 they made it push back all moves equally regardless of properties, which has made significantly stronger and an actually decent defensive tool
Something you forgot to mention is that dfs also BLOCKS automatically. High low left rigth, when you use dfs you CANT get hit. Meaning this isnt something supposed to be used all the time, but its meant to be used when you know some wack ass left right shit is about to happen. On top of that I think its fine as it. Burst its self is already an insane defensive mechanic. Dfs should be worse than it due to cost comparison. Why should the 1/2 cost defense option rival the full cost in terms of power? Above all though, your video was great! Cant wait to see what else you make.
It should definitely be worse than burst, and I think that's what they tried to do with the Counter hit state after whiff, but the meterless work arounds are what I have issues with, using command movement and lunging moves to negate the pushback (i.e. Chipp rekka) but tbf I don't think arcsys expected that to be a thing too. I get with how Dfs has developed over time its used more for countering mixups, a bit counter intuitive since it was advertised as a super pushblock But even then it still comes in clutch when you wanna shift momentum in a close game😂 And I'm happy you liked the video, I'll keep trying to make good content
could be a neat buff to lock out the opponents tension meter if the “parry” is successful. creates further mindgames, prevents prc counterplay, and more risk for the opponent. maybe too strong though
The one thing that makes it really hard to use is the fact that you have to know how far opponent gets pushed back after which move and predict when they are gonna use a move that gonna get pushed back. Wich is a lot of knowledge and reading of your opponent you need to do to get any value while also spending 50% burst. It's kinda just safer to wait for full burst wich is now much better and need to be hard baited unlike DS that have to be used in very specific points of opponent offense
Personally I think it should be changed from 214D to 22D and should auto block crossups. That simple change can make it super useful in a lot of matchups. Additionally they could allow you to cancel into P buttons or jump cancel on a successful deflect shield. That should make it at least useful for interrupting or avoiding blockstrings. To avoid it becoming to oppressive with RC after 5P just make it so it auto scales 50% like YRC.
As a Johnny player, I just can't pass up the opportunity to turn a poke into a full combo and potential wallbreak with WA. I suppose you could use it if you absolutely know that a 50-50 is coming like after Johnny gets you in a card oki setup but in a defensive situation, you might as well use the full Burst gauge and Burst.
I think, (and I'm guilty of this too) most people try to immediately retaliate after deflection, but because hitting the shield doesn't count as a whiff, (like friggin Anji's spin) and Guilty Gear loves some extended hurtbox shenanigans, the envoker still gets blown up.
Deflect shield isn't bad, just surprisingly niche in application. Main issue with deflect shield is that it overlaps with IBFD witch defeats most of its purpose as where you really need the pushback you have an easily accessible IBFD (That being on safe jumps and meaties). Where deflect shield really shines is when you are dealing with 50/50 mix and delayed strings. As the former gets nullified and the latter is really really hard to IBFD. Now the argument becomes why wouldn't you Burst or YRC in a defensive situation and there is no clear answer as it is highly specific to the situations themselves. The main argument for deflect shield is that you can get punishes and potentially force your opponent to use their resources, although some characters really struggle to punish a normal after the pushback. Also while Burst is by far your most important tool, it makes sense to throw away 50% Burst meter and have it build back for when you actually really need it to safe your life, rather than bursting early and never getting the chance to use Burst again. I'd would also like to clarify that still being in a block string after deflect shield isn't always a bad thing. There is a huge difference between blocking Nago from half screen away and blocking Nago when he is in your face.
That's true, Blocking Nago from farther away doesn't sound like a lot but, it's actually much easier to defend from that distance. I just wish that it would have a lot more use cases given how expensive it is
Honestly I've been using it more than Wild Assault. I'm an Axl main and level 5000 and I usually try to win by forcing my opponents to spend resources to avoid chip damage and as a consequence they have no access to Supers and RC unless they let me start to lay on chip damage. Faultless Defense is a strong option but when you use it you're opting to not have access to your full meter. Then compare it to what's happening to your opponent. When you're blocking you're losing Meter but when they Attack they're gaining it. The more Faultless you spend the bigger this difference becomes and the harder it is to start your offense. Sure Wild Assault takes away Burst on hit and block but it's not a safe option. I've been used to matches like Ino and Leo so I've been instinctively throw countering Wild Assaults every time. I love making an opponent rage quit when they try to White Wild Assault my Axl but don't realize I can poke them out of it before they get Iframes lmao. You pretty much sum it up in the video. Great for zoners. Bad against zoners. I still use it on characters like Chipp and Ram a shit ton. Specifically trying to either IBFD or Deflect Shield their Rekka 2. So they will not be in the Rekka 3 range which will force them to miss or have to try and get in again. Another great example is using it on Anji so his Fuijin whiffs. There's a few niche examples of using it to stop Fireball Oki like Deflect Shield Charge Stun Edge from Ky to push him Fullscreen and lose all that pressure. But since it's paired with Wild Assault you have to choose when it's appropriate. WA does seem like the better option on paper but I personally don't like using it unless it's for a Wallbreak. The WA routes people are doing aren't that amazing and actually put the Opponent way ahead in terms of Resources. I don't mind blocking in Strive because the game is so slow compared to other anime games. I can block anyone's mix in Strive much better than Xrd and I prefer Xrd. The core thing I realize and I thought was more of a meme but turns out to be true is that players hate blocking. They don't understand they're winning by blocking.
I agree. My noob take: I thought I would like it because the inputs are like marvel vs Capcom2s alpha counter but I still haven't felt really good results with it
I like deflect shield, since it is basically the "get tf out of me" the some people already used burst for on blockstrings, except that now it costs only half of your burst gauge. Maybe I'm just getting luck, but DS has been working well for me so far
You would not believe the amount of time when I was blocking low, then tried to do a back grab and the game just made me deflect shield nothing and die
The one piece edit paired with the song actually being "faster" does it for me Also Nomu, Atlas, alchemist, pox, mimi's delivery service and Osmosis. Are my favorites, thanks for watching to the end
I've found this mechanic more useful than bothersome. I guess if your strategy for defense is to just hold back and FD until the opp is away then yeah, it is kinda useless. But if you're in the habit of using IB or IBFD to create space, or cause your opp to whiff, then DS is a very powerful tool to give you at least a chance to keep fighting and at best a legit comeback. This has saved me some otherwise unsavable games. Too add to your idea, why not put the opponent on Guard Crush if they hit your DS?
It's a life saver in some games where FD and IBFD won't work as good, but the chances of throwing it out and not doing anything is kinda high, Especially when you don't know how much your opponent character's buttons push back. But tbh, you do get a feel for it after a while😅
If they tune Deflect Shield so that it cancels the momentum of any of your opponent's moves, and drops the counter state, would turn it from a useless tool to a very good one.
So first thing I noticed about this video is that your poll was very very one dimensional. Either it’s the worst thing or the best thing which isn’t really reflective of in between opinions. Second thing is yeah deflect shield sucks especially when you consider it costs more than a WA since it can’t directly lead to positive though WA is kind of broken as well and needs a nerf
Yeah I probably should have put an average option in the poll thinking back 😅, i only put the extremes cus of how expensive DS was so... And for a WA need idea, I've heard people say "let it not drain Burst on block and/or drain on block with only full charge WA"
I mean deflect shield is definitely more niche tool but it can give higher value than other defensive methods. It's a harder to use form of burst that's cheaper. I don't really think there is much of a problem with it, other than maybe being more situational. For example you can punish millia 6h on reaction, which is not something you can do with any other defensive option, and it straight beats her disc oki while being cheaper than a full burst(I know these examples from experience so there are definitely a lot more that i don't know of).Your own example of 'being useless because of rc' i think should be rephrased as allowing you to force 50 meter from your opponent which can be good depending on your matchup. A small buff, like giving back burst meter on successful use could be nice but it doesn't really need it to still be useful I've personally saved games using it and have lost games because of it so i don't understand why people complain about it. Kinda reminds me of when people who say YRC is useless
DS is very clutch, but the risk reward is kind of skewed, it's not so consistent given how expensive it is. You are right I probably shouldn't have said "useless", but burst gauge persist between rounds, meter doesn't if that 50 tension kills you you go to the next round with half or no burst at no cost to your opponent, Also if your opponent is desperate for the kill, they may panic when they ses DS and throw the game. Tbf these are just initial impressions and I said so in the video, so I could be way off the mark as time goes by (and I probably will be, I hope)
I think they should just replace it with Blitz Shield lmao, it’s so weak. If it acted as a parry and gave some window for a counter attack it’d be way better. A game like Strive where offense is the best defense, this option is just ass, sad to say. Good intentions, wrong game for this specific mechanic. Also please just remove Happy Chaos from the game.
brother it sounds bad when you cut your voice to continue in words. What if im watching your video in the background like i am? i cant read the words and it just sounds bad. Creative but i dont think you should continue this.
As a Faust main, deflect shield is the biggest buff we got in this patch because we can land on a banana peel with deflect shield while we're losing and instantly crash the game
The only way i see it useful is 50/50 high low safe jumps oki like baiken and bridget

Thank you so much, it means a lot
I love how YRC is just "Dead Angle but worse" and now we have "Blitz Shield but worse".
I used deflect sheild against Johnny using Ensenga and it sent him almost full screen lol
Yeah if you time it right they go into the other side of the fucking horizon its hilarious.
